The sound of a hacking cough pulled me from my slumber. I rolled over and blindly patted the empty space in bed beside me. "Where's Yule?" I wondered until I heard the cough again.

I rubbed the sleep from my eyes as I walked to our apartment's living room, where I spotted Yule on the couch. He looked so small as he hugged his legs and rested his forehead on his knees. He didn't even hear you approach and startled as you sat beside him and rubbed his back.

"I'm sorry for [cough] waking you up."

I flashed him a pitying half-smile. "That's okay, baby. In sickness and in health, remember?"

"I feel awful," Yule whined miserably as he all but fell onto my chest when I opened my arms to beckon him over for cuddles. My fingers carded through his long hair in an effort to soothe him. I could feel the heat of his fever radiating off his body.

I grew concerned when I could both feel and hear his breath rattling in his lungs. "You're going to the doctor in the morning," I stated firmly, giving him little room to argue. Yule hates doctors and hospitals, so I was shocked when all I got in response was a weak nod. He must feel really bad.

He quickly fell asleep, and I didn't have the heart to move him. I slowly laid back to get comfortable and put him into a reclining position to breathe easier. I found myself jolting awake through the rest of the night to check on him.

When morning came, I eased myself out from behind him to get my phone and make an appointment with his doctor. It turned out that he had pneumonia, so I sent him straight to bed after we picked up his antibiotics from the pharmacy. It was hard to get lucid Yule to sit still, but I was able to bribe him with cuddles and potato soup - his favorite.

Kate sat next to her fiancé of five hours at the Mindy family's dinner table. Yule stared absently at the centerpiece, not even reacting to her presence. She laid her hand on his.

"Are you alright? Your hands are trembling," she asked quietly.

Her touch shook him from his thoughts. He looked at her and half-smiled. "Y-Yeah, I'm cool." He straightened his back and sat up in the chair. He interlaced his fingers with hers.

"I- I just thought we would have more time," he said. "I would have liked actually marrying you."

BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in Du Quoin, Illinois, into a devoted evangelical christian family, Yule never really had a good relationship with his parents, whom he considered too strict and conservative. Still, religion has always been an important part of his life and Yule eventually found his own way to God, developing his own relationship with Him — he prays often (especially when things are bad and he could need a little extra help) and is actually really good at it, as well as at saying grace before meals, and he keeps a vintage Bible he's inherited from his grandfather. However, he prefers to keep this side of him secret to his friends, as it doesn't match the bad boy, shoplifting skater punk image he likes to portray. Always a punk enthusiast, he's often seen wearing his favourite Misfits jacket, combat boots and cap (always backwards!), along with many other vintage thrift store items. His long wavy hair, styled in some kind of a mullet, is something he's proud of, even if it's always been one of the many things his parents always disapproved about him.

Another of those things was his lack of interest in school. Not that he wasn't smart enough, as he excelled in subjects that really interested him, it was just that most of them didn't and he was too energetic to just sit still and bored for such extended periods of time. It was only when school was over and he could go to the skatepark with his friends that he was most happy. Or when he could just stay home, playing videogames and live-streaming them on Twitch. In fact, his channel (of which he's really proud and will never miss an opportunity to advertise) became quite popular and as his followers kept increasing, he actually started receiving new games to review and making some real money, which allowed him to cover his daily expenses (at least most of them) and move out of his parents' house, renting a place with 3 friends.

Charming, friendly and outgoing, in his free time Yule loves to hang out with his friends behind the abandoned Burger Crown "from 7 to whenever", where they'll skateboard, blast death metal music, sit by the fire to have a few drinks, smoke and chat about everything — from the most trivial things to everything that's wrong in the world nowadays. As a matter of fact, Yule is a non-conformist. Very attentive to what's happening in the world around him, he considers himself an activist, a supporter of the causes he deems right and important, such as the climatic change and the protection of the planet.

A young man with a somewhat rebellious attitude, he doesn’t want to be perceived as vulnerable, but is actually very sensitive in private, even if he'll only open up to a very select few. Funny and flirtatious, he's also very polite and respectful towards his potential partners, and consent matters a great deal to him. In fact, Yule has a romantic side he's never shown anyone, longing to connect with someone on a deeper level and eventually get married, finally making him part of a family who'll love and accept him for who he is.

CONNECTIONS

A 26-year-old astronomy Ph.D. student at Michigan State University, Kate rides the fine line between geeky and alternative. When she made the astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system, calling it Comet Dibiasky, her enthusiasm soon turned into worry as her calculations showed it was on a direct collision course with planet Earth, threatening to destroy it. As she struggled to get people to take her predictions of impending disaster seriously, Yule was one of the first people to believe and fully support her efforts to get her message heard. Relating to her strong attitude and willingness to fight against the established system, Yule found himself completely enamoured by Kate, feeling a connection to her on a level that he hadn't felt with anyone else. ｛ # tagged posts ｝

An astronomy professor from Michigan in his 50s and not so ambitious since he got tenure (as he admitted not to having published anything in a while). Very skilled in research and teaching, but not so much in public speaking, he had a hard time conveying the message about Comet Dibiasky and its very serious threat to life on our planet. Once he got enough attention from the media, he got distracted by all the glitz and glamour, almost losing track of what he was trying to accomplish in the first place. Luckily, he's got his heart in the right place, remembering that being true to one's beliefs and principles is the most important thing, and in the end, there's no place like home, surrounded by loved ones. Yule was one of the first people to believe in Dr. Mindy's message and considers him a friend and somewhat of a paternal figure, feeling comfortable enough to show vulnerability around him. Despite not having a good relationship with his own parents, Yule is always welcome at the Mindy's family gatherings. ｛ # tagged posts ｝

A 25-year-old skater punk and Yule's best friend since childhood, as they share the same interests and occupations, when he's not skateboarding Diogo is also an avid gamer. Once they left their parents' homes, Yule and Diogo also became roommates, renting a place together with 2 other friends and trying their best at "adulting" (aka keeping the place clean, having food in the fridge and remembering to pay the bills), which has been a bigger challenge than they thought, but also fun.
