A reminder with PBS being defunded that it is SO MUCH MORE than PBS Kids. It broadcasts educational shows about science, history, current events, nature, art and so much more, instructional television for cooking and home improvement, British shows that might not be available in the states if it wasn’t for PBS, theatre productions, indie productions that PBS gives an opportunity to broadcast they might not get otherwise, and all that’s not even mentioning NPR!!!!! Losing PBS would not only be losing nostalgic shows like Sesame Street and Arthur, but shows for teens and adults who might not be able to afford other channels as well, and THAT is one of the many reasons why it’s so important to fight for it. The link below is a form that lets you send a message to your lawmakers to not defund the extremely important resource to millions that is PBS!!!!!

has anyone else noticed just how much music was a part of the no kings protests? I wasn't able to participate, so unfortunately my information is just based on news sites/social media. My perspective is probably a little skewed since I've noticed a lot of this from tiktok clips (where the app is pretty much based on trending songs/audio). some of the major things I've seen were:

- Folk protest music. the best example I can think of is Jesse welles (guy that sang about the CEO assassination and "war isn't murder") who released a snippet titled "no kings".

- the mariachi bands/dancers that performed in at civil building in downtown la, IN FRONT of police/troops.

- protesters playing music as they demonstrated, specifically music from latin america

I know this has been said a lot, and by people can say it better than me, but art can be so so important in shaping political resistance. I think it's important we remember that in the next few years.

truly the most egregious part of the 2012 Les Mis is that they changed Valjean’s line from

“It’s the story of those who always loved you, your mother gave her life for you then gave you to my keeping.”

to

“it’s the story, of one who turned from hating. The man who only learned to love when you were in his keeping.”

LIKE?????!! How dare they remove Valjean specifically mentioning Fantine’s sacrifice and putting that before he mentions his own part in the story?? How dare they make Valjean imply that it was only when Cosette came into his keeping that he stopped hating everything and learned to love WHEN THE FUCKING BISHOP IS THE REASON FOR THE GODDAMN SEASON????

Like OF COURSE Cosette softened Valjean, of course he became a better man when he became her father, of course their relationship is important.

But this story would not have happened without the love of the bishop and it was his love that rekindled the love that was dormant in Valjean’s heart. And it was Fantine that fanned that flame, then Cosette’s that kept it steady.

I just hate how flat it makes Valjean’s story seem. “It’s the story, of those who always loved you.” Is THE answer Cosette has been searching for her whole life. I wish they’d kept it in instead of feeling like the audience would only feel fulfilled by Valjean’s story if he only mentioned his direct relationship to Cosette.

Whatever idk. It’s a good Les Mis for a lot of reasons, but a bad one for a lot of reasons too 🥲
