Wrt LRB sometimes I'm so baffled by what people bother to ask me because my charitable assumption will be an image in my mind of the results of a search query using keywords in that question and what failures may have occurred in the transfer of information and I'll start talking like "What did you search for this? When I used [keywords] the results seemed pretty self-explanatory." Or like idk. Baseline I'll assume they've read some Bullshit that comes up when u search something. There are multiple things in this world if you use the most self-evident english search queries for you will just get misinformation. So maybe then I'll start talking as to counter those points instead and they're sooo lost and I'm like ??? and they're like I didn't bother to look it up I didn't search for any texts on this subject. And I'm like. How the fuck can you expect me to have a conversation about this then? We have to like. Have a baseline of implicit assumptions of understanding to talk about this how do you not CARE about that???

i will be honest. if you water down the whole concept of the terms TMA vs TME as 'penis havers vs vagina havers' all it shows is that you fundamentally misunderstand each of these terms.

Unsolicited horror prompt from my nightmare the other night: one of those time loops that resets when the main victim dies but instead of some sort of apocalypse or horrific accident it's a teen who's got a terminal illness or a heart attack that's about to happen or something. The amount of time after the loop starts before he dies varies from an hour to a week. There are a few other people (his best friend and his english teacher for some reason) who are also stuck in/aware of the loop and they're all trying to break it but how do you find a cure for cancer (or whatever it is) and save your friend with only three days on average before everything resets? And then there's the lingering question of whether his recovery will actually break the loop, or only prolong it until he dies from something else? And why are they the ones stuck in the loop and not others?

i did private my tma stuff on redbubble! i dont use twitter or many other social media so i was unaware that they are apparently vehemently against people selling fanart for tma, i was just naively thinking well if they had an issue with an art piece theyd ask me to take it down (& i 100% would, of course) but if its something theyr outspoken about then I cant in good conscience continue selling it, even if it was my main seller on there 😔

I mostly haven't been posting anything because I was on vacation (which was fun!!), but also ngl I think I'm getting burnt out by forcing myself to work on only longfics again...

I have A Stitch In Time (my in-progress TMA longfic), which I AM running out of prewritten chapters for much faster than I'm writing new ones, but at the same time nobody's going to be mad at me for going on hiatus?? like what am I actually worrying about dskkdh

and then there's also an ATLA fic I started in 2020 on my old ao3 account that I keep swearing I'm going to finish (and I AM going to, it's just taking. so long.)

anyways, my point is both of those are longfics, which is burning me out. what I need to do is write something else short and sweet... I have one more week of break before college restarts, and I'm determined to make the most of it!!!

how scary is the silt verses? i want to get into it bc you're saying so much good stuff about it, but i had to stop listening to the magnus archives because it was keeping me up at night :(

hmmmmmmmmmmm I have to think about this a little bit, because scariness in podcasts doesn't bother me much so it's entirely possible for there to be Some Great Horror I'm just not thinking of.

Relative to TMA! I'd say The Silt Verses horror elements are less frequent than TMA, considering the TMA format is to tell One Fucked Up Story every single episode. The Silt Verses does not have that format so it can go episodes at a time digging through the narrative.

But it does have horrific things that pop up which could belong to a TMA episode. A Deer That's Wrong, fishermen sewn together into a fucked-up boat thing, whatever body-horror Val does to people. I do think the flavor is different from TMA. A lot of those TMA horrors are from the perspective of normal civilians, unwillingly subjected to A Horror. In TSV, most everyone encountering The Horrors is ready to start punching. But still like... The Horrors ARE very much there, and part of it.

Though, there is a flavor of horror in TSV which I don't think is very prevalent in TMA, which is this "you're about to be killed and everyone in society is okay with this, actually" style of horror. There's a plot point where a company which is, essentially, going through lay-offs, is allowed to kill the people they're letting go as part of a sacrifice. And the POV character (who is not being laid off) is experiencing this whole thing going "this surely can't be right. they surely can't?" But they do, and she's complicit.

So... yes...! TSV is scary! But it's a kind of scary which is more baked into the society the characters are navigating, vs. the TMA-style "spend every episode one a different Horror Incident that happened"

i’m probably overthinking this because i’m incredibly ill right now but i do genuinely think slapping the ‘south asian’ lens over jon and basira in particular does a lot to enrich their characters and experiences throughout the podcast especially when one considers the inherently voyeuristic nature of asian culture (log kya kahenge etc) and why jon might succumb to it versus basira staying immune to et cetera et cetera it but its also just really funny because south asians are already the most hypocritical insufferable pendantic self-hating group of people on the planet imagine the infighting coupled with eldritch know it all powers. jon makes dosa and calls it dosa and basira says actually its not dosa dosa is stuffed and jon throws it at her and they have to physically be separated for the rest of the week

"Reflections unto a Mirror"

I'm gonna be brave and do an Oc reveal for my TMA AUs. This OC hasn't appeared or been mentioned in any of my AO3 fics (and probably won't for a bit), but she's extremely relevant to it all.

Introducing... "Ani", the Memory-Impaired (Interim) Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute (as of 2016)!

Introduction

"Ani" (the only name she remembers) quite literally appears in the Dalton household out of nowhere one sunny January, just a week after the People's Church of the Divine Host tried to complete their Extinguished Sun ritual. Despite this, she only has a marking of The End from her exposure to the Dalton stronghold, and an unknown Marking that not even Simone can decipher.

Very few things are gleaned from trying to Compel her, amongst those being that she's Australian, she thinks she's either 21 or 23 and, of course, her assumed name. Everything else she is forced to discover over her year-and-a-half apprenticeship under Archivist Quinn, and afterwards when she is forced to assume the Interim position due to lack of willingness from her co-workers.

"Ani" falls to The Eye as a result of her persistent internal voice nagging her that she has forgotten something extremely important, and her fears that the reason she has no memories now is because someone entrusted her with a dangerous piece of knowledge. "Song of the Soul"

A term coined by Edalyn Gleave prior to her death, it stands for 'a song that you would live and die to, a song that fuels your every move when you cannot move anymore'. Hunters trained under Edalyn were typically ones posed this question, but the Institute begun taking up the idea too when the Thundering Strings started getting too confident.

"Ani" claimed her song was "Navigating" by Twenty One Pilots, but the song does not exist (yet). Thus, she hunts for a new song, and eventually finds herself resonating close enough with "What My Scene?" by Hoodoo Gurus due to her unfamiliarity with her place in the world, and her desperation to clutch to her homeland and its music.

"Try" by P!nk does seem familiarly powerful to her, but she can never bring herself to call it her "Song of the Soul"... more 'the old tune to a life I used to lead' (no one prompted her so she forgot that line afterwards lol)

Well in that case we can also argue that ''trans woman" fonctions as an umbrella gender characterized by a particular adversarial and oppositional relationship to patriarchy: transmisogyny produces trans womanhood, and afab trans women are certainly this.

''Trans woman'' is also an essentialist archetype that some trans women fail to met (e.g those born with a vulva, those who can bear children).

The social reality of the afab transfem can be similar to the one of (conventional) transfemininity if the afab person is perceived (and thus treated) as a transfem..so what about those people ? Aren't they functionally transfem ? Their lived material experience isn't transfem? However similarity can also arises from interesections between racialization, misogyny, or lesbianism, intersexuality, detransition etc, creating experiences that are functionally like or adjacent to trans womanhood. Some afabs can also be ''women by dint of being less than women'' and thus are transfems, this is not exclusive to amab transfems.

the crux of your problem is this sentence: "the social reality of the afab transfem can be similar to the one of (conventional) transfemininity if the afab person is perceived (and thus treated) as a trans fem"

this is the main justification I see being used for claims of transfemininity/trans womanhood/being tma by people who were cafab: people keep mistaking me for a tranny, and that makes me a tranny! this rests on a complete misunderstanding of the systemic nature of transmisogyny. being mistaken for a trans woman, even on the regular, does not put someone in the same totalizing relationship to hegemonic gender, for the simple reason that (as I have now said multiple times) the logic of transmisogyny operates thru birth assignment. the corrective violence of transmisogyny is applied specifically because betraying coercive assignment as male puts a person in a unique degenerate position as far as cisheteropatriarchy is concerned. someone who was cafab will always have their birth assignment as a shield against this, even if there are instances of mistaken identity where it cannot be used in time.

you may retort that sometimes the violence against someone who was cafab proceeds apace despite disclosure of this assignment—perhaps in the case of the cafab butch lesbian facing street violence (thinking of nearby versions of hannah gadsby's story in nannette), or the working class transmasc on T running up against discrimination at the workplace, or, famously, the case of woman athletes, generally Black and sometimes intersex as in the case of Caster Semenya, being banned from sports competitions (I imagine this is one of the examples you're alluding to when you mention intersections). but to equivocate this to transfemininity is itself violent erasure. you would be neglecting that in every case there is a difference between the person under discussion and someone against whom transmisogyny has set its whole machinery.

there are tma masc lesbians, there are working class transfems on T, there are Black trans women for whom participation in sport is yet more complicated. the realities of navigating the legal-medical-social apparatus of gender is multiplied in impossibility for all of them, because birth assignment is the charge laid by transmisogyny to condemn the trans woman. whatever intersection your "afab transfem" sits at, there will always be this difference between them and transfemininity. this is a difference that will be leveraged against the latter, not the former.

if you think you can reskin my argument as you have in this ask and maintain its fit to reality, then you understand neither misogyny nor transmisogyny. transmisogyny against the "afab transfem" is a mistake by the lights of hegemonic gender itself, to be amended (not necessarily into something harmless, but certainly into something different) upon the revelation of birth assignment. meanwhile the misogyny experienced by trans women (including closeted trans women, including the trans girl who does not even know why she is being treated thus!) does not happen by accident, but as part of the logic of (trans)misogyny itself, because trans women fail to be men despite their birth assignment and this demands punishment. there is not an escape-by-disclosure here. in other words, misogyny deliberately makes trans women women! there is no defense the trans woman can mount on the basis of birth assignment, because that is the very event against which her existence is measured.

this is not true of your imagined afab transfem, nor is any further punishment systemically levelled against the "afab transfem" because of their failing to meet the "essentialist archetype" of trans womanhood. on the contrary, the "afab transfem" remains asymmetrically empowered to use transmisogyny against the transfeminine. yes, cafab ppl are not exempt from violent transphobia, but this is not a violence predicated on the same gender-betrayal the transfeminine person embodies. the political distinction between these experiences remains.

a final point: you are correct that some cafabs can be "woman by dint of being less than woman" but I never claimed that this was a unique trait of transfemininity! in fact I made it clear that this is a common condition for many women (ableism, fatphobia, classism, etc. can all degender a woman). what is unique is the role the logic of transmisogyny plays in defining transfemininity, and the specific manner in which it underclasses the transfeminine subject—makes her the kind of person for whom only a certain, highly peripheralized form of existence is permissible.

if you are interested in describing the way the world is (hopefully with intent to change it) then this is not the way to go about that. any careful analysis of the power relations that cisheteropatriarchy uses to facilitate gender-classing in service of the division of labour will make this clear. you can argue whatever you want! you can also be wrong.
