Oh, what a messy final scene! Thanwa is totally fine to feel hurt about being accused here, but I also don’t think that Peak is off-base to think that Thanwa is trying to protect Max. He doesn’t know what has happened between them because neither of them has shared the important things.

Sakusa x Reader

Sakusa was never one to be sentimental, he always faced life head on with rationality. He never did anything excessive nor unnecessary after all not much stuff interested him. Yet, strangely enough he finds himself visiting whenever he has time, if not everyday, hoping for a chance for just a glimpse of that person.

He was waiting for his teammates for their so called meet up, staring outwardly at the grim sky calculating how it was a bad idea to stay there any longer. Just as he had thought, people were crowding in the café as the rain started to fall heavy on the ground. Luckily he was sitting in a far corner on a 2-seated table. He was starting to panic, feeling the germs in the air seeping through his space, head spinning and breaths shallow.

A young lady approaches him worried, it seemed to her that he couldn’t hear her and so she moved closer but he shrunk further in his space scared of her. Having noticed that her prescence may not have been needed, she stayed a fair distance away and tried to have her friend shoo people away in the area.

“Sorry, you just seem like you’re close to having a panic attack. I am by no means a psychologist nor a student in the profession but would you mind me helping you.”

Having noticed her standing a few distance and controlling the area so as not to get crowded, he nodded his head to at least acknowledge her efforts.

“Thank you, then can you please breathe with me slow and steady.”

He followed her rhythm and was able to calm down a bit albeit his state of mind wasn’t that stable yet for his rationality to kick in.

“Can you name 5 things you can see here?” She asked curtly, looking around to see he has enough vision to catch a glimpse of anything.

“A cup, a person, coffee beans, umbrellas, raindrops.” He says, averting his attention from the crowded lines up front.

“Now how about 4 things you can touch?”

His face scrunched having been annoyed at this person asking him another question.

“This table, the mug, this chair, the floor and that plant.” Gingerly pointing to a flower pot behind her. She giggled finding his reactions adorable in contradiction to his tone of voice.

“What about 3 things you can hear?”

His mind was starting clear, similar with the skies as the heavy rain has turned into a shower.

“Uhm, cameras clicking, people chatting and your voice.” His cheeks turning slightly red from embarrassment of having to talk about the person bothering him right now.

“2 things you can smell.” She said, proud of herself for having helped someone once more.

“Vanilla and expresso.” He says as his vision starts to focus along with his headache going away.

“Lastly, 1 thing you can taste.” She says with a soft smile on her face.

“Caramel.�� He whispers softly as his body stops shaking, people have already started moving about their day as if the storm never happened.

“Good job, how are you feeling?” She questions as she checks for any signs of him going into a panic once more.

“I’m good, thanks.” Looking away, not having the courage to face her after seeing him in that state.

“That’s good to hear. By the way---“

“Sorry to interrupt but we really should get going unless you want us to be late.” Her friend comes back with a coffee in hand.

“Ah, oh yeah I forgot it’s that professor.” She says abruptly standing straight and ready to run out.

“Oh uhm, thank you for trusting me and I hope you get better soon. Bye.” They rush out to the opposite of the street as they disappear into the alleys.

His eyes wondering how lucky he was that someone was kind enough to notice him.

“Pak.”

He slaps himself on the face for that though ‘what the hell is wrong with me today.’ But as he was about to leave the place for good, he couldn’t help but think that that girl was quite cute

After that encounter he kept coming back to that café hoping to maybe thank that stranger properly one day. But as the days passed and seasons changed he found himself hooked on a person he doesn’t even know anything about. He wasn’t sure if it was fascination or love at first sight, so he kept on waiting hoping to get an answer once he sees that person.

I loved F-Zero GX on GameCube, but I’ve never played the N64 version before. It turns out I love this version, too, even though it feels a lot more brutal than I remember GX being. This is Nintendo’s take on the sci-fi racer genre, and it does a great job at it.

F-Zero X features a whopping 30 racers at once (each with a unique ship) and – even with some obvious rubber banding – they all move like actual opponents, making mistakes and reacting to your presence. The game goes a great job at remaining smooth by adjusting the level of detail as the framerate is perfect throughout. The tracks twist and turn and it’s all incredibly fast.

One key part of the game is the energy bar. On top of representing your health, it’s also your boost. There are places to recharge on the track (usually near the end of a lap) so a key part of the game is deciding how much you’re willing to risk in order to go faster. Blow up and you lose a life and have to start the race again.

The tracks in F-Zero X start out quite gentle, but things take a sudden turn in the last track of the second cup (there are four cups in total, with 6 tracks each) and you’ll start getting thin portions of the track with no edges – fall off and you’re not placed back like other games, you lose a life and start again. Just surviving the tracks becomes the main challenge until you start learning them.

Not every choice is made against the player, though. You have barge attacks and a spin attack at your disposal. Take someone else and they won’t score any points for that round. To make good use of this, the game even highlights you rival (the opponent with the highest score) so you can try to target specific opponents and pick them out of the crowd.

On top of the leagues (which have four difficulties) and multiplayer, there’s a few extra modes. There’s an unlockable X cup that serves you up procedurally generated tracks and a “death race” mode where you race around a short track trying to take out every other racer (I personally would prefer if you could do this on other tracks as well).

F-Zero X is a great game that is quite full of stuff to do. It’s still a ton of fun today.

F-Zero X is fast. While other developers may have chosen to polish its exterior, Nintendo have created one of – it not, the most – well-judged and wonderfully balanced racing games we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing.

Remake or remaster?

A remake of F-Zero GX with all the tracks and features of F-Zero X added in would be amazing – although it shouldn’t be based on this version of F-Zero X, but we’ll get into that when I play the Japanese-only expanded version of the game.

Unfortunately I'm a Pretty Responsible Dog Owner

Usually I’m the model dog owner. My boxer, Teddy, and I take regular walks together. I’ve never left her crap lying around for some poor guy to take care of. We’re up to date on all her shots and visit the vet at least twice a year. And under no circumstances is she ever allowed outside without her collar and dog tag. I’m always careful with her. 

But recently I slipped up at the dog park. I got a call from my job and I couldn’t afford to ignore it. I couldn’t have been on that call for more than ten minutes. When I was finally able to hang up I turned to find Teddy, her jaw clenched, cowering under the shadow of another much larger dog. 

No, describing this dog as much larger isn’t fair to the absolute unit this thing was. It looked like it ate people whole for breakfast. There was something in the stray’s eyes that seemed almost too human. 

I scooped up my poor baby girl in my arms. As I ran, barely able to hold her in my arms. Behind me I heard the stray bark. 

Now I’ve been a dog person all my life. Ever since I was born my parents always had at least one or two dogs in the house. I still remember my first dog, Domino. Bless his heart. Throughout high school I volunteered at the local dog shelter. I must’ve heard thousands of distinct barks throughout those four years. I took care of hundreds of different breeds. 

So believe me when I say that painful mimicry of a bark from that “dog” wasn’t natural. The stray heaved out each bark in a strangled cry. Just the thought of it now makes my skin crawl. I’m certain that creature is anything but a dog. I held my poor sweet Teddy tighter as I slammed the dog park gate behind me and ran. 

I think to myself wouldn’t it have been great if all I dealt with was a weird dog look alike monster today? But well of course there's more. It’s never that simple. 

My wife knew just how much the whole encounter rattled me. We opted to just order that night and take it easy. We sat on the couch together eating take-out lo mein. Teddy laid at the base of the couch, lightly snoring. I got a notification on my phone. When I went to check I saw a text message from an unknown number. 

I texted back asking: How did you get this number? 

I watched the dots in the typing bubble dance for a moment before they sent: You should keep a better eye on her. She’s an exquisite breed.

A chill ran down my spine. I looked over to my wife, who was completely unaware of my horrific situation as she ate her take out. 

“Alex, you aren’t playing some prank on me with our friends right?” 

Her eyebrows furrowed and she tilted her head. “Sylvia, what in the world are you going on about?”

Well it’s just this text I got a minute ago. I held up the phone to her face. Her face shifted from confusion to dread. I felt the phone buzz in my hand. Another text sent when I was showing her the phone. I’ve been with my wife for twelve years and I’ve never seen this terrified before. “Holy shit, block them. Block them right now, Sylvia!”

I turned the phone around to look at what they sent. Wouldn’t want something to happen to her. There was an image attached to the text message. The picture was at eye level with Teddy. She stood in focus of the camera, glaring her teeth. In the background you could see the jogging leggings I wore that day and my red parka. My face was angled away, preoccupied with the call from my boss. 

Like any sane person I blocked the number. My wife and I tried getting the authorities involved but there just wasn’t enough evidence. When they traced the number they found the phone alone in an alley, only a few blocks away from the dog pak. 

After police involvement something about the whole situation just kept nagging me. How the hell did they find my number? I didn’t put two and two together until this morning. I was preparing Teddy for our next walk. As I clasped the collar around her neck I noticed her dog tag. Engraved in the shining metal was my phone number. Unfortunately I’m a pretty responsible dog owner because engraved below my number was my address. I thought back to the photo the anonymous messenger sent. Teddy could be seen clear as day with her dog tag proudly shining against her fur coat. I plan on getting her a new dog tag later today.

that irk history post was cool. any theorys on how they lost their wings and or how they developed paks?

Yes.

Irkens loosing their wings and the development of PAKs are deeply and directly connected.

PAKs were invented just a few decades after an event known as “the great unifying”, an event that involved the complete unification of all Irken countries and governments under one Almighty Tallest. Its considered to be one of Irk’s most important moments in history, and is considered by irken historians to be the beginning of the modern empire’s formation.

PAKs were originally built with the purposes of space travel and survival in harsh environments in mind. They were extremely complex devices that acted like spacesuits, EVA packs, communication systems, toolkits and life support devices compressed into one single thing on the irken’s back.

Because PAKs needed to go on the Irken’s back, astronauts had to get their wings surgically removed so the PAK would fit. The nerve endings where the wings used to be would be connected to the PAK, letting the wearer control the PAK with their mind. The removal of the Irken’s wings in this situation was considered to be a necessary evil. PAKs were made for space travel, so astronauts were some of the only people that would receive PAKs, and they can’t exactly use their wings up in space where there’s no air.

Then as time went on, PAKs became more widely used, but instead of one type of universal PAK like today, multiple types of PAK were made for different jobs. PAKs had weapons put into them and were given to high ranking soldiers, PAKs had engineering equipment put in and were given to architects and engineers that requested them, and so on.

As the Irken Empire slowly formed, PAKs became more mandatory. Soldiers of all types were required to have a PAK installed upon enlisting. More engineers and architects were given PAKs, even if they didn’t want them, and so on.

Eventually, PAKs containing medical equipment and medical trackers were required at birth. So Smeets started having their wings be cut off just minutes after being born/hatched/whatever you call it when you’re taken out of a cloning tube. (Gene editing and cloning was already the main way that Irkens would reproduce, it had been that way since long before The Great Unification and the Unity War that preceded it).

After that, since everyone had them now, trackers were added to PAKs. The government could track your location from anywhere and your PAK could hear you saying anything bad about the government and automatically report you, and since PAK’s were connected to irken bodies via the nerves that used to belong the the wings, it was extremely difficult to safely remove PAKs to prevent this.

Meanwhile, Irkens were slowly developing to have smaller and smaller wings since they were being cut off at birth.

Then came the invention of the first Control Brain (which were simply called Judges back then, as their purpose was to assist in the judicial process, a job that control brains are still used for today. They wouldn’t be named Control Brains until a while after Irk achieved first contact, which wouldn’t happen for a couple hundred years). And stuff immediately started going to shit.

Sentient AI like Judges brought up the question of artificially creating irken brains, which eventually led to the use of PAK’s as a second mechanical brain, which eventually led to the organic brain and the PAK becoming two halves of the same whole like how it is now.

PAKs becoming second brains directly led to the invention of methods of connecting the PAK to the brain without using the wing nerves, so irken wings were completely useless now. Couldn’t keep them because PAKs are mandatory, but we don’t need them for anything else now. So irkens started selectively editing the genes of smeets to speed up the process of the wings developing less, eventually completely removing them after several generations. This kind of thing is actually something they have experience with, as the entire Irken race accidentally selectively bred and edited their reproductive organs and desires out of themselves long before the Unity War with their overuse of cloning technology.

Meanwhile, PAKs are starting to become even more restrictive. They had already created the multi-purpose PAK, and they started to add in even more trackers, now even more invasive because the government literally had access to people’s brains because of the new “second brain” feature of PAKs. Screw trackers that report you to the government if you say something bad about the Empire, now you can’t even think anti-empire thoughts, as the PAK just straight up blocks them.

Then, without any warning (except for the many warnings of several dozen scientists across several generations, all of which the government ignored) irkens started getting dependent on PAKs. Even smeets. By the time irkens achieved first contact a century or so later, that 10 minutes to death thing had been established.

As PAKs became more advanced and more restrictive, the first defectives were discovered. Turns out, if an irken has something in its brain that makes a part of it incompatible with a PAK, like say for example; a mental disorder or trauma, it will overwhelm and break parts of the PAK. Can’t fix the defective by fixing the PAK because the problem is in the irken’s organic brain. This meant the beginning of anti-defective propaganda, along with Defective Trials (which would later be renamed Existence Evaluation Trials) where a Judge (Control Brain) looks through your PAK’s artificial second brain for evidence of you being defective. This is also what led to PAKs blocking trauma and restricting emotions.

By the time Irkens achieved first contact, their PAKs were already very close to what they look like in the modern day, just built with less advanced technology. They repressed the same things, they had very similar devices inside them, you died in 10 minutes if they were removed, all that.
