So I have been slowly but surely playing variable barricade and have been able to finish the common route and Nayuta’s route after a couple of months, and now I want to write everything in my mind before moving on completely to Shion XD

To sum it up, I have been enjoying this game so much, it is really shaping up to be my favourite otome game! (Sorry Hakuouki you are still special and dear to me, but yeah, I’m being objective here XD)

At first, I was wary and kept my expectations low because the reviews were quite mixed. And I was entering the game assuming it is pure romantic comedy. I won’t lie at the first couple of chapters, the more slice of life-y tone that has some comedy sprinkled left me waiting for the rom-com to kick in Ouran-style, but the moment I appreciated and drilled in the idea that this game is indeed more of a slice of life, character-study kind of story, I immediately started enjoying the common route immensely!

The dialogue is top-notch, the character interactions are so good, and the characters themselves are multi-faceted and feel so real in a good way.

The common route was enjoyable from start to finish, every sentence and piece of dialogue I enjoyed.

Of course, Hibari herself has a huge role to play in this. She was thrusted in a very extreme and difficult situation from her point of view, so every thing she has said or done (including her ‘bratty’ attitude) totally makes sense and perfectly portray a 17 yr old teenager.

Plus she’s cute, really really cute, protect my baby at all cost 😤

So yeah overall I have been hooked😆🤝

Now for Nayuta’s route, I like genki, himbo guys so was looking forward to his route, and it perfectly delivered. I like how in the beginning, Hibari, as a way to work upon making sense of her choice of him, creates this scenario of him being her guardian and acts like a typical teenage girl who falls in love, and despite this shattering because of how oblivious and one track minded he is, her pursuing of him actually caused a huge ripple in his very straightforward simplistic world, where he sets on one thing and clings unto achieving it despite everything else.

That gets me to the fact that he was described as ‘selfish’. Which was a really interesting way to describe him. And yeah that one track mindedness of his and straightforwardness makes him put his own desires first and foremost and in a way he is ‘selfish’. But interestingly, as I said, the ripple caused by Hibari led to him gradually maturing in a way that uses such straightforward and ‘selfish’ thinking in a way that is more balanced.

In fact, I think him being ‘selfish’ is not bad at all! It means that his desires, when being directed towards becoming better and to also be and support those whom he loves, is actually much more better than a ‘selfless’ person who might put societies needs above theirs and would consequently get hurt or even hurt those around them.

So as his route progresses, I liked how he gradually started cherishing Hibari as someone dear to him for personal reasons, not idealistic ones, and he redirected his guardian skills in a way that made him perceptive of Hibari’s needs and compared to the beginning of the route, he became much more understanding.

By the end, the same one track mindedness that is an inherent part of his personality as well as the ‘selfishness’ became the drive for him to fulfil his desire to help Hibari and to be with her.

So 10/10 XD

Taiga

'you saw it first, you deal with it!' If you're scared... you're screwed.

he closes off the room in the house but he won't leave you at least

will laugh if you get scared but will tell you what to do if you're nervous

if you ask for anything, he'll go get it, and will 100% laugh out loud if he hears you scream because it moved

if he finds it first... that bug is dead

'babe, get me a magazine' you hand him the magazine, he winds up to hit that thing like a baseball

Shion

would not kill bugs

if it's cute he'd put it under a cup and let it outside but if it's scary? your job

would not admit to being scared but would be very uncomfortable with it in the room.

if he tried to smack it away from him and he touched it? he would go wash his hands immediately

Nayuta

would take charge to get rid of them regardless

usually he would just let it outside but after one incident where he let it outside and it flew back in, you don't let him do that when you're home

if you yell to much about it, he'll end up going a little extreme and you'll have a hole in the wall.... but the bug's dead at least?

acts without thinking, as usual. you yell to get rid of it and he will, bare palm, smack it

Kasuga

'it is important you know how to deal with this on-' 'shut up and kill it'

he'll start the lecture every time, and will give you a look every time that says 'only this once', and he'll kill it every time

he's not scared in the slightest.

Hibari, Tsumugi, and Arimura (Bonus :>)

Tsumugi would put on a smug face and step up right to the plate. fearless like kasuga, except she will hunt for sport.

Arimura would complain, but still do it. 'it's just a bug, y'know.'

Hibari.... would not. She would probably freak out with you. to the point where you would lock yourselves away and call tsumugi

So I finished Ichiya’s route (bad, neutral, and good end) and…

OOOOOHHHHHHH MYYYYYYYY GOOOOOOSSSHHHH!

Spoilers are under the cut. This isn’t a deep analysis but this will be a discussion of the ending of Ichiya’s route.

Ichiya went from toxic (derogatory, yes I’m holding a grudge about the unintentional portion controlling) to toxic (entertaining). 💖

It was delightful to see Ichiya’s deeply sentimental and emotional self be taken to what I would consider a logical extreme.

It’s been said time and time again that Ichiya is a coward who runs away from his problems. Thus, when his emotions are running high and his hopes are at an all time low, of course he would decide to throw his life away! If his prospective problem is living a life separated from Hibari, then he’d run away from life itself!

Shion straight up called him “yandere” (at least that’s in the normal end) in the Japanese voice over. Which like, yeah. Ichiya is not yandere in the way Tei or Jisoo were. He’s kinda more sad and pathetic than dangerously unhinged. But his love pushing him towards such extreme thoughts/actions is kind of how yanderes work (in a loose, general sense to my understanding).

Also Hibari’s behavior and reactions to Ichiya felt pretty good to me. I like the way the writers showed her being emotionally distressed by Ichiya’s choices and how she takes Ichiya’s confession. As well as realizes her own selfish little wish. She admits her expectation, her desire to hear Ichiya proclaim his need for her, is something impossible, at least hearing it puts her at ease.

This behavior would be a red flag IRL but within the confines of a game, I’m thoroughly entertained. In different ways, Ichiya and Hibari are both putting a lot of their self-worth on the other party loving them. It’s wild and emotional and I think it’s a great way to resolve their romance.

They started at two opposite ends of how to approach love. Ichiya was schlocky and overbearing and a bit of a false persona. Hibari also put up a false persona but one that rejected love and feigned a desire for practicality. But in the end both come to the conclusion that they want a romance that’s deep and true, if a bit ugly in how the feelings present themselves.

I cannot say that Ichiya has become my fave in the game since I really have only completed his route. But he has somewhat redeemed himself by being such a drama queen.

I really can’t wait for the other routes now.

Otometober Day 3 - Touchstarved MC

I wasn't sure to go with this and I know there is still alot of terms I have no clue about so I looked this up and it said...

So someone who’s touch-starved is someone who so desperately wants attachments/connections.

Being touch starved — also known as skin hunger or touch deprivation — occurs when a person experiences little to no touch from other living things.

Touch starvation refers to the longing for touch or physical contact from other living beings. It typically occurs when a person experiences little to no physical contact for a prolonged amount of time.

All things that I really never knew so I would say the first touch starved mc that comes to mind I think is Hibari in Varriable Baricade. She grew up with her grandfather who was a very stand off ish type man hugs and all that really weren't done much. Her butler kept a distance from intimacy like that with her since secretly he was her brother. Then when you see her interact especially with Shion because he takes her stress out by just holding her daily. You find it was what she longed for so long for and can't get enough of it once she does get comfortable with it. Not saying it wasn't hard for her but she really was more innocent than you might have imagined and so touch starved it wasn't funny. I loved seeing her walls come down due to this though.

I had much more fun with Variable Barricade than I thought! It’s one of my favourite otomes so far. Not to mention Shion had an amazing route I love him so much.

Of course it doesn’t have what it takes to take over as my nr1 (this spot is for Collar x Malice and Collar x Malice only.)

The Fausts, Josele, and an Idol!AU

Inspired by @lyranova, here are my thoughts for Nacht, Morgen, and Josele in an Idol!AU.

Morgen: An independent artist known for his love ballads and his deeply contemplative songs. Morgen was a former indie artist working with Nacht, known together as "Devil and Angel" (you can guess who was who). He plays piano for all the songs he writes and is known for being a skilled lyricist. The harmonies he writes are good too, but people tend to focus on his lyrics.

Nacht: One of the four members of the group MKC. He's the group's song composer. He's a vocalist and their main rapper. Used to sing with Morgen when they were indie singers "Devil and Angel." Played the guitar when he sang with Morgen and was the one behind their harmonies. It took Nacht a while to learn lyrical composition.

Josele: A member of the popular girl group 4EVER. She composes the songs, sings vocals, and is the one to perform any rap sections in the songs. Having learned fashion from her mother, Josele also assists in dressing 4EVER for music videos and concerts. She's known for regularly presenting a "starry night sky" aesthetic using white, blue, and black clothes and accessories.

Nacht, Morgen, and Josele are childhood friends. Morgen always had a fascination with music (particularly love songs) and got Nacht to join him in music making. Josele was their first fan and even helped them write some of their first songs. Nacht and Morgen slowly gained popularity thanks to their musical skills, their genuine fan interactions, and also a bit in part to their looks.

Things took a sour turn when Morgen went behind Nacht’s back and wrote a song entirely on his own to confess his love for Josele. She accepted Morgen's confession and even admitted her own feelings for him, leading them to starting a relationship. Feeling betrayed (by Morgen writing a song behind his back and for getting with Josele when Nacht also has feelings for her), Nacht split from Morgen though he couldn't bring himself to abandon music altogether.

Instead, Nacht trained to join an idol group, not feeling brave enough to have a solo career.

Meanwhile, Morgen did continue to sing as a soloist and officially signed with a record label.

Josele joined the idol world in an attempt to reach out to Nacht in some way since the brothers had grown distant with each other.

Somewhere along the way, Josele and Morgen got engaged, despite Josele's managers and agents telling her it would hurt her idol career.

And now for the "plus more" I mentioned earlier.

MKC, the boy band that Nacht is a part of, has competition in the industry of course. Some of those bands (based on the dating sims I've played) include:

Barricade Heartz: Ichiya, Taiga, Shion, and Nayuta -Ichiya is the lead vocalist and rapper. -Taiga composes the music and is known for always recording the guitar part for the instrumentation of their songs. -Shion is the lyricist and the wardrobe coordinator. -Nayuta choreographs their dances. -Their formation was a business venture by the Tojo Family. -Hibari, the Tojo Family's heir, is working as the group's manager. -Kasuga, Hibari's butler, also serves as a coach for the boys.

LE CHANT: Misyr, Il, Ignis, and Canus -Misyr composes the group's songs all on his own. It's always been that way. -Il isn't the "face" of the band as it were, but he's their lead vocalist. -Ignis and Canus work together to choreograph dances. -Kaoru Rindo is their manager and a former solo artist himself. -LE CHANT got their start as a band from singing outside of coffee shops and cafes. -Their band name, LE CHANT, was inspired by the cafe where they really caught on as a group, Enchanté. So they went with a French name for their group. -Canus is shy about his face and so is always seen wearing a hood and mask when he performs.

Tokyo Spirits: Tomonari, Kunitaka, Genjuro, Yoichi, Kinji, Ohtaro -Tomonari is the main vocalist. -Kunitaka composes the songs with help from Kinji for lyrics. -Genjuro and Yoichi are in charge of choreography. -Yoichi and Ohtaro have a known rivalry over who is the better rapper. -Kinji is the one who sees to their visuals. -There was drama with people thinking Kunitaka (with his last name being Tojo) was a member of the Tojo Family connected to Barricade Heartz but it was proven to be a rumor. -A lot of the band's songs tell stories from the perspective of an object, such as the notebook of a struggling student or the necklace of a woman looking for love. -Kinji used to be an enka performer. No one knows why he switched to pop but they're not going to question it.

savior6: Adolphe, Yves, Scien, Lucas, Mathis, Ankou -Yves leads the group's vocals. -Adolphe and Ankou take turns composing the group's songs. -Mathis is the one who writes song lyrics. -Lucas choreographs their dances. -Scien is the one in charge of the group's visuals. -Ankou is a member of the group but he's inconsistent in his appearances and actually does more solo work. -This gives the other band members a bit of stress since "6" is in their group's name but there's not always six of them! -Many of the group's songs have dark, hopeless themes. Their most popular song is "Endless Despair."

RADIANCE: Vilio, Radie, Ion, Paschalia, Zafora -Vilio is the lead vocalist. -Radie is the one in charge of choreography. -Paschalia and Zafora work together to compose songs with Paschalia focusing on the harmonies while Zafora writes lyrics. -Ion is the main person to do rap portions of songs. -Jinnia is the group's manager and vocal coach. -Tifalia is the assistant manager but is working to take over completely for Jinnia. -Liyan auditioned to be in the group but didn't make the cut. However, he applied to be the group's social media manager and got that job (he got it to stay close in the event that someone else drops from the group).

love X malice: Aiji, Kei, Takeru, Mineo, Kageyuki -Aiji is the main vocalist and also the peacekeeper for the group. Literally, without them they'd be a mess. -Kei does a little bit of everything for the group and he's known for pulling off the most complicated dance moves. -Takeru composes the songs and also uses his tech skills to create special vocal effects in recordings. -Mineo raps and handles the group's visuals. -Kageyuki does the group's dance choreography. -The men aren't just idols. They also act in tv dramas. Funnily enough, they all acted in a crime drama before their idol group ever formed.

GANGSTAR: Gilbert, Dante, Nicola, Yang, Orlok -Gilbert is the lead vocalist and song composer. -Dante and Nicola together work on dance choreography. -Orlok takes over for rap sections in songs. It still surprises the group that he can rap. -Yang doesn't involve himself in much performance production too much, being more inclined to direct their business ventures. -Henri Lambert is the group's manager (and thus butts heads with Yang once in a while). -Rumor has it that all of them were in and out of youth detention centers growing up. -Dante and Nicola auditioned to be idols since their families have been in the entertainment business for generations. Nicola took to it well but Dante was anxious early on and fainted during his first live performance.

Code Realize: Arsene, Impey, Victor, Abraham, Saint, Herlock -Arsene is the main vocalist and a jack-of-all-trades, helping all the other band members in their jobs. -Impey and Abraham choreograph dances. -Victor oversees instrumentation for their songs. -Saint is the one who handle composing vocal harmonies. -Herlock is the brain behind song lyrics, currently at least. -Impey and Victor have been known to build devices to create special effects in live shows. -Herlock was a late addition to the group, having been a solo artist beforehand. -Cardia and Finis are the managers for the group.

Project Prince: Waltz, Fritz, Chevalier, Klaude, Rod -Waltz is the lead vocalist and comes up with a lot of the songs' concepts. -Fritz is considered weak when it comes to standard singing but actually excels in rapping. -Chevalier composes their songs based on Waltz's ideas. -Klaude coordinates the band's wardrobe for their performances. He also plays piano for recordings. -Rod choreographs their dances and leads vocals in numbers where Waltz isn't leading. -Waltz was part of a mixed girl and boy band called Wish-Grant. It consisted of him, Lucette, Mythros, and Loreah. -Fritz used to be Lucette's personal bodyguard when she was still performing. -Chevalier was a vocal coach and behind the scenes song writer but joined Project Prince upon Waltz's offer. -Klaude was a former solo artist but after a small scandal, he was in need of a way to rehabilitate his image and so joining a group where he wasn't the face of it was determined to be the best option. -Rod was a hired choreographer for Wish-Grant since none of their members were knowledgeable to do it themselves.

I like how the very first meaningful interaction between Hibari and Shion when he taught her how to arrange a terrarium, was a huge foreshadowing to how their relationship will unfold.

She desperately wants to get a break from her extremely stressful lifestyle, and she wants to be herself. Shion lies on the complete opposite spectrum of her. A relationship that is a double edged sword but if given the chance to flourish, would end up making both grow in a positive direction.

These convos here when he was teaching her to make a terrarium were very telling of how from the start he exactly knew what she wants and how she deep down got attracted to the pragmatic, free lifestyle of his, regardless of how bizarre it seems for her.
