so say you're a streamer, and say you don't want to say anything too politically divisive and remain a safe, welcoming space for all. also say someone sends a tts dono requesting you to say something positive about a marginalized group and you decline, for the reason stated previously. and let's also say several of your mods are openly bigoted maga supporters on social media. i don't think it's a wild nor unfair leap to see how one of these groups would feel less welcome than the other. just saying.

OP your world is beautiful and worthy of fighting for. And it is happening - which is why bigots are making such a fuss. As a child, as a teenager, less than a generation ago I never watched anything like Steven Universe or Owl House or She Ra Princesses of Power. Even Gay and Lesbian content was relegated to the hidden-away fanfiction boards. The only atheists I knew were in my immediate family, otherwise I just knew christians.
Not anymore. We fought for more and made room for more and got more. The more we fight against bigotry, the more we make room, the more acceptance we will all continue to get.
And those who are against acceptance are absolutely bigots who, like the nazis, would rather see a person dead than accepted.
Bigots don't realize how far I want society to go in terms of acceptance. I want to see a world where an eighteen year old getting bottom surgery that leaves them entirely without genitals, or with both sets of sex organs, to be commonplace. I want to see a world where the hotboy singer all the straight girles are fawning over to be an underweight pre T trans guy. I want there to be public theistic luciferian pagan churches, that were converted from catholic churches, and have church school attached to them. I want fathers to be proud of their daughters becoming sex workers. I want the title of ceo to seem as ancient as the title of duke. I want it to be considered normal that some psychotic people carry weapons for self defense. I want it to be normalized for people to be on puberty blockers deep into adulthood. I want...

"In order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance." This is the so-called tolerance paradox of the philosopher Karl Popper. In other words, when a tolerant society tolerates intolerant worldviews, that is not just the end of tolerance. Ultimately it's the end of this society...

i don’t know why i’m consistently surprised by how many of the users on this website don’t know how to be a person. like “haha it’s so cute and fun we’re all so neuroSPICY” girl you still have to be a person. you still have to learn how to Be A Person you have to learn how to be normal around other people for the love of god is this thing on you still have to commit to basic social contracts and that’s a good thing

yeah, i don't think I'll ever be fully over Dorian and my Inquisitor as a couple
like i may be something of a serial blorboshipper, I know that, but they just... they're just it for me, you know
they got everything
the raw sexual tension between tank and support. the coy wordplay bleeding into overt, if playful flirtation. the friendship as natural as breathing as they march side by side into love inevitable. the attack dog devotion. the fearless leader falling to his knees in worship of his beloved. the deep understanding unlike any they've had with anyone before.
the humor. the kink. the angst. the both of them feeling ever so vaguely unworthy of the other, and marveling at not just each other, but the very fact that they are allowed to have this.
Tumblr media
i just. head in my hands, clawing my face off, etc, the sickness has claimed me again and it is not letting me go
is this the Blight? it's got to be the Blight

Tolerance: Pact? Virtue? Maybe both
Tumblr media
We've all seen annoying people who point to leftist protests against things like racism and fascism, and conclude "so much for the tolerant left".
As most of you probably know, others have replied that tolerance is a social agreement to peacefully coexist with those who differ from us, as long as they reciprocate and don't infringe on others' rights or safety. It's not unconditional acceptance of any view or behavior, but a mutual pact for societal harmony.
However, I rather dislike this notion that tolerance isn't a virtue, but merely a pact of non-aggression. This seems shallow and not reflective of people's actual views. But I think there's a way it can be both.
Let's take an easy example: Murder bad. Societies need laws to function, including bans on murder. So, the social contract says, "you don't murder me; I won't murder you." But most people consider abstaining from murder to not just be an agreement, but a basic moral principle and thus a virtue - even if the bar is really low. Thus, our abstention from murder begins as a pact, a social contract, but people tend to extend this further, to a virtue. What about killing someone in self-defense? Or to save someone else? Is that non-virtuous? Sinful? Illegal? No. It's none of those. Because our moral concept of murder evolved from the social contract against murder, our moral concepts also include exceptions. We don't call killing in self-defense murder. (We even invented different words to differentiate them! E.g. kill, murder, manslaughter.) No one would argue, "you say you're anti-murder, but here you are murdering someone who was about to kill you!" Again, we don't see that as a contradiction bc the virtue is born as an extension of the social pact and its boundaries.
I think the same is true about tolerance. It begins as a social pact of non-aggression, but from there evolves to a virtue. However, the virtue of tolerance has the same essential borders as the pact (just like the virtue of not-murdering has the same essential borders as the law). So I think the social pact of tolerance demands we not harm those who don't seek the harm us, and the virtuous aspect of tolerance sees the morality in not just non-aggression, but in seeking understanding and peace (similar to not-murdering).
~~
I think there is an interesting discussion to be had about moral values that exceed the social contract. E.g. turn the other cheek. I do think that is the *ideal* way to resolve an issue, but sometimes you can't win by just turning the other cheek. So I see a tension between the social contract as the base or fundamentals of a functioning society, and moral values which seek to expand the minimum-requirements of the social contract to the maximum-possibilities of ethics.
p.s. obviously, see also the "paradox of tolerance".
pps. there's also a difference between judging people for things they can't control (e.g. race, age, sex, etc) and things they can (e.g. political views). I think there's an easy case to make that tolerance should automatically apply to the former but not the latter. (That said, I don't think this point covers the entire discussion, as I think the more fundamental issue is the dichotomy between political views which harm people and those which don't.)

honestly there's something to be said about, i've compared the way i write monsterfucking as effectively having the downsides of both dating and keeping an exotic animal as a pet, and those who make it work are those who are probably nonstandard for both of their standards — but, specifically i'm thinking about this in the sense of, yeah aaravi's not made for or making it very far in human society otherwise. she grew up too isolated and too constantly on edge and constantly told everyone wants to kill her so she has to commit to that violence first, she just can't get comfortable in that sense anymore, she DOES often feel more like a wild animal than a person and other people end up treating her as a wild animal and reinforcing that... and it does kinda match that she finds stability and and reassurance in the character that i've been using wildlife behavior studies and knowledge for how to write. it does kinda make sense that that's validating to her, that that matches her and matches how she navigates the world, and finds a way to use that to help soothe herself and soothe her soul. she doesn't have to pretend to be a person to be loved, she doesn't have to hide parts of herself, she doesn't have to play presentable in a way that's forced on her. she gets to be as messy and ugly and difficult as she wants and at no point does that make her lesser or not worth considering, not worth loving. she can be as unpalatable as she wants and no one can take that away from her.

How far does the paradox of tolerance go?
Thinking back to a post I read about framing of the paradox of tolerance as a social contract, those not willing to follow it aren't owed it or something. I wondered....
If a white man is racist, can you be racist back to him? What about sexist toward him? or would that require he also be sexist?
The social contract framing seemed super sus to me and i couldn't figure out why.
And then it hit me.
If a white trans man is racist, can you be transphobic towards them? can you ignore their preferred pronouns?
No. The answer is no. If you needed me to tell you this, this is not the social media site for you.
I don't think its suppose to work like this. I think it makes more sense to focus on it as not tolerating their intolerance, but still not being shitty to them about their other characteristics and i worry this social contract framing instead positions it as a binary switch that flips which justifies hate because of hate.

anyway yeah relevant to that post abt being deaf/hoh and ppl excluding u from conversation bc of it (even unintentionally), that's smth that's been really deeply bothering me lately bc there are a few ppl I routinely have to deal with who do it a lot and it Pisses Me The Fuck Off I've lost all patience w them. giving up and calling it ableism and walking out idc anymore 🚶‍♂️
#theres a guy at work whos incredibly annoying for it but tbh hes bad at his job in general anyway n everyones annoyed at him all the time#so at least i get some solidarity from my other coworkers (who are generally rly accommodating of my deafness)#i dunno how he hasnt got the memo ive explained im deaf so he needs to face me n make sure he has my attention n enunciate multiple times#but nope still not getting thru to him! so half the time if he starts mumbling i just pointedly ignore him until he either speaks more#clearly or goes away lmao#and same with a friend of a friend im sure hes a nice guy and everyone else seems to like him n hes in our main discord server so i cant#avoid him as easily and ive been so tolerant of it but hes worn thru my patience entirely and idc abt trying to be nice anymore#if he comes on call and starts mumbling and sidelining me from the conversation i just put him on mute im not dealing with that anymore#i dont fucking care if its petty and rude to do that. im tired of trying to understand him and dealing with how left out he makes me feel#i hope he picks up on the hostility n feels unwanted so maybe then he'll understand what its like for me and fix his behaviour 👍#bc i have no other way of communicating that with him anymore. since I CANT FUCKING HEAR HIM!!!!!#he also has a lot of other annoying behaviour which is fine but this is my limit its so disrespectful and outside of my control#make space for my disability or go away forever#not sure if we could even be friends if he did change now bc hes soured my impression of him so much by this point.#sad! well theres other guys#im glad everyone ive met at climbing so far has been pretty good abt it. really not that hard to do!#anyway rant over lol. at least the guy at work is only on a temp contract so only have to deal w him for a few more months#unfortunately since the rest of that group is friends w this other guy he'll prolly be around longer. but oh well lmao#just crossing my fingers he'll drift away n never open discord again so ill never have to deal w his shitty crackly mic mumbling#or maybe he'll stop fucking calling from whatever wind tunnel hes in and properly join in on our movie nights instead!!!!!#it is sad bc i think he has similar music taste to me. there are def some things we have in common that could form a basis for friendship#but hes gone n ruined it innit#aaaanyway oops started complaining again... the bitch grind never ends#im gonna shower n go back to elden ringing it.... fare thee well#.diaries

My aliens use base-100 (with subbase-10). And they divide their day, which is about 90,000 seconds long, into millionths (~.09 s), myriadths (~9 s), and hundredths (~15 min). The millionth, about 0.09 seconds, is about as fast as they can act, with their reaction-speed of three times faster than a human (no word on if their motor cortex is red)—the human record for speed-drawing a handgun, from seeing a signal to shooting a target, is 0.27 seconds without a special rig (it’s an even quarter-second with one), held by Bill Jordan.
I kinda wanna translate their time units (they also use Planck times for scientific purposes) as centidays for hundredths and microdays for millionths. There was a pre-SI prefix for ten-thousandths (ten thousands is myrio-), but it was dimi-, and “dimiday” suggests loud Southern stadium owners.
