The Unusual Film Of Our Gurus Stars Patrick Tse (謝賢) & Petrina Fung (馮寶寶): Time (殺出個黃昏), Every Aspect Of Acting Has Something Magical About It!
‘You don’t stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing.’ I grew old when I stopped tearing up. Last week, I incongruously laughed and cried at the same time—not that I got a mental problem but because I have watched one of the most affecting movies of Hong Kong Time(殺出個黃昏).
When we sat down to dinner, we often talked about youth problem—the problem that we actually did not know much about. It is hard getting people to talk about elderly problems—perhaps, death could be a simple solution for all these problems and nobody cares. Or, older people seldom declare war against society.
This good film is about 3 old scoundrels: during the daytime, they all had an identity to hide behind. One was a helpless grandma (Petrina Fung馮寶寶) who had to sing in scruffy nightclubs for an indecent living. One was a once-handsome lonely singleton (Patrick Tse謝賢) whose reluctance was to dump his killing knife, his only companion for the sad years. One was a fat and ugly driver (Lam Suet林雪) who dreamt of marrying a young and pretty prostitute who unfortunately just treated him no more than a customer. Old age turned them into kind people and kindness made them warm-hearted ruffians, with enough conscience to keep them away from killing the wrong people; and even to save good people who are on the verge of dying, physically or spiritually, if not both. When God laughs at the sinful souls and the souls laugh back to God, the ‘trinity’ of these 3 forgotten old folks were always there to suffer. However, in the world of movies, losers are often more celebrated than the winner.
The 3 oldies stick around for orders to kill, but business was poor since they often failed to kill. They were also enslaved by their respective liabilities. The singleton was chased by a teenager girl who looked upon him as a super hero. The nightclub singer was pressurized by her son to give all her assets away to him. The driver’s prostitute dream girl told him one day that she found a better man in Macau and would like to say goodbye. Destiny is brutal: when these 3 were hungry for more from life, life gave them less. After a series of ludicrous but funny incidents, 3 of them finally changed: stop expecting too much from others. Simply treat life as happiness, double and double it till death do them part.
In Hong Kong, very few films include the theme of aging or seniors, perhaps old people are not cinema customers. Older people in local films are too often cliches, old-timers mumbling and shaking their walking sticks. I still remember vividly the touching western films about old age such as The Father (爸爸可否不要老), Driving Miss Daisy (山水喜相逢), On Golden Pond (金池塘) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (黃金花大酒店). It now takes a great deal of bravery for the film producer Gordon Lam (林家棟) and director Ricky Ko (高子彬 ) to stand up and pay homage to the elderly who contributed tremendously to our city in the past. Lam dares to confront the market risk. His determination to banish negative investors with illumination and his willingness to wrestle with the 2 senior actors Patrick Tse and Petrina Fung, who are artistically demanding, caused angels to sing. I love the film as much as I respect Gordon Lam personally as he is my personal good friend who has always lived up to his high ideals.
The 2 shiny stars Patrick Tse and Petrina Fung have been in the film industry since 1950s. They were good looking, charming and popular in those years. They are never erased from popular history and Hong Kong’s collective memory, coloured by our strong emotion towards them, especially when Patrick Tse is the father of another great young star Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒). Tse and Fung acted very powerfully in the film. Watching them how to act is not just the passing of time. Their acting is the collection of life experiences and their intensity about creative ideas. Most importantly, when they shine, they have a high level of confidence in themselves. They are confident about what they were doing in the film and their conviction is contagious. Audience are happily manipulated by them and become perfectly satisfied when we leave the theatre. Also, they, as gurus, give the film a special class and style.
Apart from acting, the dialogue, cinematography, editing, design, mise en scène and attitude of this film all suggest hard work and sincere thoughts. Despite its means, the end of Time is surely not a commercial film for amusing the audience. It wants to tell us that Hong Kong still has a genre called ‘Hong Kong films’ and Hong Kong stars still glint.
The charming music scores are the wonderful work of a master Tomy Wai (韋啟良). The 2 songs that he chose ‘倦 Weary’ and ‘青春之歌 The Song of Bloom’ successfully connect the related staves of the story. It is in the contrast of light and dark, happiness and joy, and up and down that great music happens.
“The best recommendation I can have is my own creativity and my humble effort, and what others cannot do for me. I fail more than succeed. Please be assured that however, I will not give up,” said the producer of the film Gordon Lam. Isn’t this ‘Hong Kong spirit’ in need in our city?

Cobra Kai Season 4: What to Expect
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains Cobra Kai season 3 spoilers.
“Hey. Long time,” Kreese (Martin Kove) says at the end of Cobra Kai season 3 when he calls someone mysteriously, as if to ask a favor. Now just who could it be?
The most likely candidate is Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), Kreese’s war buddy and the main villain from The Karate Kid Part III. Season 3 of Cobra Kai explored Kreese’s backstory, adding credence to this postulation. We see Young Kreese’s (Barrett Carnahan) traumatic experience as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, and how he saved his friend that he nicknamed Twig (Nick Marini). It’s implied that Twig is Silver. In The Karate Kid Part III, Silver was a rich CEO of DynaTox Industries, an unscrupulous nuclear waste disposal company. He helped to fund the Cobra Kai schools and was a major sponsor of the All-Valley Karate Tournament. Since the season 3 finale reveals that season 4 is headed to another yet showdown this tournament, Silver would be a good play.
And here is everything else we might be able to glean about Cobra Kai season 4.
Potential Villain Cameos for Season 4
There are some other possibilities for a potential Cobra Kai season 4 villain for as we’ve already seen, Cobra Kai Easter egg clues can be intentionally misleading. Tory’s (Peyton List) mom was an expertly played red herring, which we’ll come back to in a moment. The writers know that their audience is watching the callbacks closely and are game to toy with our expectations.
With the season 2 cameo of Chozen (Yuji Okumoto), Cobra Kai has exhausted all the villains from The Karate Kid Part II except for Sato (Danny Kamekona). At the end of that film, Sato had mended his ways so he wouldn’t have returned as a villain anyhow. In season 3, episode 4 ‘The Right Stuff,’ Sato is mentioned when a villager explains the changes at Tomi Village to Daniel (Ralph Macchio). But in the following episode, ‘Miyagi-Do,’ Chozen reveals to Daniel that he inherited the Miyagi-Do artifacts when Sato died.
Sadly, Kamekona died in 1996, so even if Cobra Kai wanted to revisit him, he would have to be digitally reincarnated like Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) in Rogue One, and that doesn’t seem likely. Those episodes also revealed that Yukie (Nobu McCarthy) died too, which is appropriate since McCarthy died in 2002. But back to villains, Chozen had some dojo-mates, Toshio (Joey Miyashima) and Taro (Marc Hayashi), who helped him harass Daniel (Ralph Macchio). However, they were tertiary henchmen roles. Few fans would recognize if they reappeared in Cobra Kai and Kreese had no ties to the Okinawan Miyagi-Do villains so he wouldn’t call them.
The other great villain from The Karate Kid Part III was ‘Karate’s Bad Boy’ Mike Barnes (Sean Kanen) although he was Silver’s guy, not Kreese’s. Both Kanen and Griffith are still alive so maybe they both can return. Kanen is still acting with movie and TV roles as recent as 2019. Griffith retired from acting about a decade and a half ago and shifted to writing. Most recently, he was a writer for the NBC TV series Grimm. Regardless, he’s still in the business. What’s more, Barnes had two henchmen, supplied by Silver, Snake (Jonathan Avildsen) and Dennis (William Christopher Ford), but they were peripheral characters like Toshio and Taro. They wouldn’t have much impact without Silver or Barnes. Most fans wouldn’t even remember their names if not for the Internet.
One other wild card for Kreese’s call recipient is Dutch (Chad McQueen) from the original films. When the Cobra Kai dojo-mates reunited in season 2, episode 5 “Take a Right,” Dutch was the only one missing from the original line-up. During that episode, the rest of the gang raise a toast to him, explaining his absence as due to his incarceration in Lompoc Federal Prison. Perhaps in season 4, he’ll be released.
McQueen is the only son of Steve MeQueen. He retired from acting around the turn of the millennium and has devoted himself to racecar driving since then. In 2010, he founded the custom car company McQueen Racing. There were rumors that Cobra Kai reached out to McQueen to reprise his role as Dutch in “Take a Right”, but he was too busy with McQueen Racing at the time. Dutch was arguably the worst bully of the original Cobra Kai members. When Kreese beat Johnny (William Zabka) after he lost at the All-Valley Karate Tournament, the gang abandoned their sensei, but Dutch could have remained loyal.
Mysterious Parents
One of the best red herrings of Cobra Kai was the identity of Tory’s mom. Most fans thought it was Ali (Elisabeth Shue) because Tory introduced herself in Season 2 as “Tory… with a ‘Y’” echoing Ali introduction to Daniel in The Karate Kid when she said “Ali… with an ‘I.’” Tory’s mom is bedridden due to health issues, forcing Tory to hold down two jobs while in high school to support her family. Her mom was offscreen in a scene in Season 3 which further stoked suspicions. But later in the season, we discover Ali is back and healthier than ever, and her two kids are Lucas and Ava, not Tory.
So, who is Tory’s mom? The only potential remaining lead female characters from the original films are Jessica Kennedy (Robyn Lively) from Karate Kid Part III and Julie Pierce (Hilary Swank) from The Next Karate Kid. Both actresses are still active in TV and movies. Tory had some martial arts background which she may have received from her parents (Tory’s dad could be in play too, but her mom has already been presented, albeit hidden from view, so she’s a more likely reveal for Season 4). Jessica wasn’t a student of Miyagi, but Julie was. So maybe Julie is Tory’s mom.
Fans are split on the possible return of Julie. The Next Karate Kid was a critically panned flop, so it is generally disdained by the fanbase. It was Swank’s first lead role, and she shines despite the awkwardly bad script. Swank went on to win two Oscars, two Golden Globes and was named one of the 100 most influential people by Time magazine. She is the most successful alumni of the Karate Kid franchise. What’s more, if Cobra Kai should bring Julie back into the canon, it opens the possibility of The Next Karate Kid villains, Colonel Paul Dugan (Michael Ironside) and his school security squad, the Alpha Elite, including Ned Randall (Michael Cavalieri).
Beyond Julie and Jessica, there weren’t many other women in the original films. Ali had some high school girlfriends in The Karate Kid, Susan (Juli Fields) and Barbara (Dana Andersen) but like Toshio, Taro, Snake and Dennis, they were peripheral characters. The dramatic impact of one of them being Tory’s mom would be minimal.
The other mystery parent is Miguel’s (Xolo Maridueña) father. His mom Carmen (Vanessa Rubio) describes him in Season 3 as “a very bad man.” Perhaps he could be Barnes or Dutch (Silver should be around Kreese’s age because they both served in Vietnam so he’s too old for Carman, although it’s noteworthy that despite playing his elder, Griffith is a year younger than Macchio). If Miguel’s dad is Dutch, that could really mess with Carmen and Johnny’s blossoming romance.
Return to the All-Valley Karate Tournament
A key figure to bring back at the All-Valley Karate Tournament in what will probably be the season 4 finale is the Referee (Pat E. Johnson). Johnson was the martial arts master behind the original franchise, a noted master of Tang Soo Do. And in season 3, episode 6, ‘King Cobra,’ Captain Turner (Terry Serpico) tells Young Kreese that the martial art he will learn is Tang Soo Do. This confirms a theory that many martial artists have held about what martial art Cobra Kai really practices – it’s Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art often labelled as Karate. Following the original movie, Zabka continued to train under Master Johnson. Coincidentally, Johnson also taught Steve McQueen and along with several other notable celebrities. Now in his 80s, Johnson still teaches Tang Soo Do. It would be so fitting to honor Johnson with a cameo because he was largely responsible for the Karate in the franchise.
One character we’d like to see developed in season 4 is Anthony LaRusso (Griffin Santopietro), Sam’s (Mary Mouser) punk little brother. So far, he’s only been a nuisance for the LaRusso family, the one slacker, but he has untapped potential for a more significant role. He appeared in almost every episode of season 1, but his role diminished to just two appearances in season 2. At least he’s still in the cast for season 3. Aisha (Nicole Brown) and Raymond (Paul Walter Hauser) were major characters who simply vanished in the third season.
A huge wild card might be a cameo from Dre Parker (Jaden Smith). In the 2010 redux of The Karate Kid, Dre was the reinterpretation of Daniel’s role, the bullied outsider who finds redemption in the martial arts. While many hardcore fans of the original reject this as part of the Miyagi canon because there’s no connection of any of the characters to the original films, there’s no reason Dre can’t be integrated. After all, if Spock Prime (Leonard Nimoy) can meet Spock (Zachary Quinto) from the Kelvin timeline in the Star Trek redux, anything is possible with franchise reboots. Admittedly, the plot of Cobra Kai doesn’t include time travel (except for an overdose of nostalgia), however that doesn’t exclude the possibility of Dre existing within the world of Cobra Kai. More intriguingly, it would open the door to a cameo from Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). That would really raise the bar on the martial arts of Cobra Kai. And most significantly, Will Smith is an executive producer of Cobra Kai. Smith’s company, Overbrook Entertainment, acquired the rights for The Karate Kid to make the reboot and retained them for Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai has been incredibly witty with its homages to the original film franchise, but with more seasons to come, it will need to expand its scope lest it exhaust its supply of those golden Easter Eggs.
For years, there have been persistent rumors about a sequel to the Jaden Smith/Jackie Chan version of The Karate Kid. The film was by far the most profitable installment of the entire franchise, earning $359 million from a $40 million budget, more than all the original four films combined, so it is surprising that Hollywood hasn’t pushed harder for a sequel. But Jackie Chan is a busy man. There have been unconfirmed rumors of his involvement with Rush Hour 4 and Shanghai Dawn for years too and those are no closer to fruition. Nevertheless, a Dre cameo in Cobra Kai would be a good steppingstone for a redux sequel. And Dre could fit right in with the cast easily. Jaden Smith is the same age as Tanner Buchanan (Robby).
One of the reasons that Cobra Kai left YouTube Red to go over to Netflix was because YouTube wouldn’t commit to a fourth season. Given how the show has played out, the writers seem to have the underlying story arc sketched out, at least as far as season 4. With the escalating surprises that Cobra Kai has already brought, season 4 should be even more fun.
Cobra Kai never dies!

Cobra Kai season 3 is available to stream on Netflix now.

Kamen Rider 45th Anniversary File: Kabuto
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2006
Magical Source! Mystic Force! Power Rangers Mystic Force premieres on ABC and Jetix in the west.
After two seasons of the same lead cast, the Pretty Cure franchise introduces fans to a pair of brand new Cures, Cure Bloom and Cure Egret, in Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star. The series airs alongside the new Sentai and Rider series. Super super spark, Splash Star!
After the mild success of creating Garo, Keita Amemiya takes a break from the directors chair to be a character designer on a TV series called Madan Senki Ryukendo. The show was sponsored by Capcom and created by Takara Tomy and We’ve Inc. Ryukendo revolves around a trio of magical heroes who use special keys and talking weapons to defeat an army of demons terrorizing a small city. It also serves as a sort-of-prequel to the Tomica Hero Series as that series is set in the same universe.
Meanwhile, some of the staff of Garo worked on a short adult revival of the 1970s P-Productions TV show Lion Maru, Lion Maru G.
Endless Bouken Spirits! Super Sentai celebrated its 30th anniversary/season with GoGo Sentai Boukenger, a treasure hunting themed Sentai that features special segments at the end of the show highlighting the important milestones and tropes of the franchise as well as teams from each season.
Ultraman celebrates its 40th anniversary year with Ultraman Mebius, a show that pays homage to the entirety of the franchise with some classic monsters reappearing to fight the rookie Ultra and guest appearances by previous Ultramen.
Gamera returns for one last film: Gamera the Brave  (Coke products not included.)
Tumblr media
2006 was the 35th anniversary of Kamen Rider.
Since this momentous occasion was so special, the staff of Toei decided to go back to basics with the next series (especially given the staff/writing debacle with Hibiki the previous year). No extreme excess amounts of gimmicks, no strange mashups of motifs, just good old fashioned fightin’ bugmen.
Tumblr media
Early Kabuto concept art
Tumblr media
A later concept sketch showcasing the overall final look of the main hero. Note that one of these designs would be used for a future Rider in the show. Copyright to PLEX and Ishimori Pro.
One interesting thing about Kabuto is the allusion to the franchise’s roots. The Masked Rider Project began on April 3, 1971 after the Natives landed on Earth. This leads to fan theory that the Kamen Riders, at least the tech-based ones, have their belts, cybernetics (in the case of Showa Riders) and equipment made from reverse engineered alien technology. A bit of expanded universe lore leaned a bit factual weight to that theory outside normal canon, as Kamen Rider Stronger’s Final Form Ride by Decade was a Zecter.
But this was just a date, a fanservice nod in terms of the show.
The insect motif designs for most of the Riders in the series were essentially modernized variants of the Showa Riders: A Japanese Rhino Beetle (Stronger/Kabuto), A member of the Vespa family of insects (Super-1/TheBee), a Dragonfly (V3/Drake) and two Grasshopper themed Riders (1 and 2/Kickhopper and Punchhopper). It also payed homage to the more recent motif of a Stag Beetle (Kuuga/Gatack) for the main supporting Rider.
There were also new additions, including a Scorpion Rider and a trio of new Beetle motif Riders as the annual movie exclusive Riders. (Hercules, Caucasus and Centaurus).
Tumblr media
The reboot Takeshi Hongo makes a cameo in one episode (made even stranger since there was no other reboot film in theaters at the time, as The Next was still being filmed.) Given the real Kamen Rider 1 exists as does Kabuto in later continuity, this is best hand waved as just a promotion plug for Kamen Rider: The First’s DVD.
Tumblr media
There were also 35th anniversary files building up to the summer movie God Speed Love, which essentially functioned similar to the ones Boukenger showed for Super Sentai’s 30th. (These 45th anniversary files are the unofficial, fanmade sort of successor to this bit.)
Tumblr media
During a few of the Super Hero Time closing segments, Souji would interact with Satoru aka BoukenRed. This was no surprise since the two sibling shows were celebrating an anniversary year together, but it was historic as nobody had seen the actors of a main Rider and a Red Ranger interact with one another before in conversations.
Most Super Hero Time segments kept the heroes separate and interacted only with their show’s cast onscreen aside from transformations and dialogue, so this was unheard of at the time. This event would sow the seeds of future crossovers in the Heisei era such as Den-O and Kiva, the Decade crossover with Shinkenger and eventually lead up to the Taisen films and spring crossover specials.
A media trend happening during the mid aughts was The Matrix film franchise, whose “bullet time” visual effect was often duplicated and/or parodied. Kamen Rider was no exception, as the staff and SFX team at Toei decided to experiment with variants of the visual mechanic by giving the heroes of the show a unique form of super speed to counter equally fast enemies.
Another achievement this installment made was Kamen Rider Kabuto has the distinction of being the first main Kamen Rider to go into space!
Tumblr media
(Space, the final path of heaven... these are the Hyper Clock Ups of the superhero Kabuto. His continuing mission, to destroy strange new monsters, to seek out new recipes and quote his Grandmother. To boldly kick where no (Rider)man has kicked before! *TNG theme plays*)
Let’s not waste any time, we must talk of the path of Heaven who rules over all!
Tumblr media
Mr. Tendou circa 2007 in Paris, France, traveling as the greatest chef humanity has ever been graced with.
Real Name: Souji Tendou (formerly Souji Kusakabe)
In 1971, Earth was visited by aliens called the Natives, who offered to protect humans in secret from the more hostile members of their race: The Worm. They did so by developing and creating the Masked Rider System and ZECT, a tech company/defense force designed to hunt down the Worms. They assume human forms in an attempt to blend in and live peaceful lives among the humans.
In 1998, a shower of meteorites hit the Japanese district of Shibuya, killing countless people and causing massive property damage. Among those killed were the Kusakabes, save for the youngest son, Souji and his cousin Jyuka. While this disaster was tragic, something even worse came with the meteorites: The Worm.
Young Souji received a belt from someone to one day help humanity. Jump ahead to 2006 and he gets his chance after seeing a Worm attacking and a Zecter appears, which comes to him and he transforms into Kabuto to destroy it.  Having lived with his grandmother after the death of his parents, Souji upon first impression comes off as egotistical and eccentric. But he is a caring soul and has a Buddhist monk-like sense of peace. He also really loves his grandmother and both he and Jyuka quote her philosophies often.
Kabuto does not align himself with ZECT and does hero work on his own whims, as he rightfully does not trust them. He investigates the mystery of ZECT and the Worms and sometimes makes hard decisions that make the hero come off as cruel or questionable in motive.
After defeating the rouge members of ZECT and the Worms, Souji becomes a famous world-traveling chef. But should the need arise, he will call upon his Zecter once more to fight evil wherever it may be.
Powers:
As his insert song lyrically describes him, Kabuto is the Lord of Speed. Able to travel faster than the speed of light itself in Hyper Form, Kabuto is one of the fastest Kamen Riders around.
His Clock Up power gives him the ability to move at super speed to the point where everything around him is at a standstill or slowed down considerably. In addition, Kabuto’s armor grants him enhanced defense and the tachyon energy it or combined Zecters absorb can be channeled to execute a finisher or weapon attack. The belt and its systems, being alien tech. have a self repair function that allows Kabuto to restore the Armor or Belt even after heavy damage, the extent of time to repair depends on the damage. (Ex. The ability to use Clock Up again in mere seconds after his Clock Up system was electrocuted by Stronger. )
Kabuto’s Hyper Form can also allow the Rider to break the time barrier and alter history however he sees fit to save someone or immobilize his target for a quick finisher. The exact limit of the length he can go back in time is unknown, but it has been shown he can go back at least 7 years into the past. This also results in some timey-wimey scenarios where Kabutos from alternate timelines can appear and disappear. It also means that the Hyper Zecter cannot be destroyed on a permanent basis, as another can be called upon from a different point in time or an alternate timeline. In Hyper form, Kabuto can fly or jump higher using a tachyon energy powered jetpack which can also be used for space travel. Kabuto also has immense super strength in Hyper form, able to do Superman-like feats with the help of his jetpack such as push a giant meteorite.
Souji is a very skilled combatant, as part of his fighting style utilizes evading his opponent to read their movement before finding tells and countering with rapid punches or slashes. He also utilizes his super speed and surroundings to his advantage. Souji is also very skilled at many things with examples including cooking, martial arts, and remaining cool under pressure even in the most tense of situations.
Weaknesses:
Kabuto is a difficult opponent to defeat, as he can simply time jump to take his foes out before they can even plan an attack or just mow them down with Clock Up/Hyper Clock Up. But there are ways to defeat him, some superheroes such as Kamen Rider Faiz Axel form or Red Buster from Go-Busters can match regular Kabuto’s speed. So it stands to reason a foe with powerful super speed and attack power could defeat him.
Another way is to create a “Clock Down” wave, creating a subspace field of energy that disrupts Kabuto’s tachyon absorption and thus forces him out of Clock Up. Without his signature ability, a more skilled combatant could overpower him.
Decade is shown to be more than a match for Kabuto by copying his Clock Up  and utilizing other Rider powers in tandem with that ability to crush him. If another ZECT Rider gains a Hyper Zecter, such as Kamen Rider Caucasus in God Speed Love, Kabuto would have trouble defeating them unless he used his own or formed a strategy to take them down.

Signature Finishers
youtube
Rider Kick: By pressing the three buttons on his Zecter and flipping the horn lever back and forth, Kabuto charges tachyon energy into his feet to execute a powerful kick. Kabuto’s kick comes in three variations: A normal 180 degree roundhouse kick, a counter kick (360 degree roundhouse kick, which is used to surprise opponents who attempt to attack him from behind), and a flying side kick. The Hyper Version is way more powerful and utilizes the tachyon jetpack to rocket jump higher to land the kick with even greater force.
Avalanche attacks (Kunai Gun): The Kunai Gun multipurpose weapon can execute a Rider Shooting attack, a Rider Thrust stab or a Rider Slash.
Maximum Hyper Cyclone: Kabuto’s most powerful attack. By summoning the Drake, TheBee, Sasword and Perfect Zecter in Gun Mode and combining them, Kabuto channels the maximum output of tachyons into a powerful energy burst that annihilates anything in its path. The recoil from this powerful gun blast is so rough that Kabuto either needs to use his jetpack to keep himself steady or use Hyper Clock Up to stop time to slow his inertia from the recoil or do both.
Maximum Hyper Typhoon: A powerful Rider Slash that channels the maximum output of tachyons into either an enhanced sword cut to kill one foe or a powerful swordbeam that destroys multiple targets.
Enemies:
ZECT
Tumblr media
A tech/defense organization founded by the Natives and humanity, ZECT itself is kind of dubious at times. This is not helped by the fact that Worms who are not Natives and harbor schemes of their own are lurking in ZECT. ZECT often has problems among its ranks, so it is hard to trust some of the personnel as some of them could backstab, be a Worm or go under orders to kill or detain a Rider. Things get worse in an alternate timeline where infighting causes ZECT to split into two warring factions with the main version of ZECT’s leader plotting to end Humanity by bringing more of....
The Worm
Tumblr media
http://kamenrider.wikia.com/wiki/Worm
Worms are a mimetic humanoid insect alien species from an unknown region of space who arrived on Earth on a Meteorite that crashed in Shibuya back in 1998. They commonly possesses the ability to move at unbelievable speed after shedding their pupa stage, fire energy blasts and can mimic a human right down to their memories ala Invasion of the Body Snatchers, usually killing the original or mimicking a recently dead person.  Worms have a variety of insectoid or arthropod forms they can take on and powers, ranging from the ability to stop time completely to attack unseen to shooting webs covered in acid.
There are good Worms called the Natives who wish to help humans and some who are even close to the main characters and get a happy ending. But I’ll leave that as a surprise....
Kabuto was a good series as it remembered the franchise’s roots and tried to honor them one last time before heading out into a new era of change and progress in motifs and innovations for the Kamen Rider series. And that path is the one we still walk now...

CANTLON'S CORNER: WOLF PACK OFF-SEASON REPORT, VOLUME 8
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Another busy week of news as the NHL Entry draft is less than 24 hours away. NHL DRAFT The yearly confab of the entire NHL will be in Dallas on Friday and Saturday as they begin selecting players for the future. The Rangers are expected to be among the teams most likely to be wheeling and dealing. They presently have 52 players under contract, two over the required CBA of 50 allowed. A percentage of those players have expiring contracts and will be RFA's or UFA’s until the end of the month. Adam Tambellini was released. Steven Fogarty was given a qualifying offer. Hubert Labrie and John Albert, both acquired from Hershey, are two others likely not to return. Labrie as a result of a glut of defenseman in the organization. Albert, who was earning a serious six figure deal last year, will likely be Europe bound. All RFA's including Scott Kosmachuk, Dan DeSalvo, Chris Bigras were made qualifying offers. The Pack will see an influx of new players like Sean Day, Tim Gettinger, Brett Howden, and Libor Hajek at training camp. There will also be ten draft picks from the Rangers draft. Free agency for NHL and AHL starts on July 1st. CALDER CUP FINALS GAME 7 The Toronto Marlies were not to be denied and reeled off four goals in the third period to capture their first Calder Cup. They knocked on the door the last two years, but got it on the very last game of hockey in North America and Europe this season. Andreas Johansson, whose second period goal broke a one-one tie, turned out to be the game winner. He was named the AHL Jack Butterfield Playoff MVP with 24 points in 16 post season games (10-14). Mason Marchment, the son of former Hartford Whaler, Bryan Marchment, was one of four players with two points each. He scored twice in the 6-1 win including the last goal of the game on an off balance turnaround slapshot. Ex-Pack Chris Mueller was among three players on the Marlies squad to capture their second Calder Cup title. The loss for Texas goalie Mike McKenna, who faced 40+ shots in each of the last two games, came up short on securing a championship in a Game 7 two years in a row. The 35-year-old netminder may have seen his last chance for a title. Curtis McKenzie had a strong tournament as the second highest post season scorer. In 22 games he had 11 goals and 20 points. The title was the first pro hockey title for the city since the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup in 1967. They are the first Maple Leafs farm team to win an AHL title since 1981-’82 when the New Brunswick (Moncton) ‘Hawks, a dual affiliate with Chicago, took home the silver chalice. The Toronto Marlboros of the OHA (now OHL) captured the Memorial Cup title in 1975, their second in two years with Bruce Boudreau, former Whaler and Nighthawk, John Anderson (they are now the head and assistant coach in Minnesota) future NHL’ers Islanders great, John Tonelli (whose two sons who now play at Taft Prep in Watertown), Mark Napier, John Smrke, Mike Kascycki, former Ranger, Whaler, Nighthawk, Mike McEwan, Trevor Johansen, and Mike Kitchen. The Marlies won all the odd numbered games of the series 1, 3, 5, and 7. Joining Mueller (with 12 assists and 16 points) in savoring a title was Marlies team captain, Ben Smith, who became the 126th player of an elite group to capture a Calder Cup and Stanley Cup title. The Texas Stars had two ex-Sound Tigers in Matt Mangene and Colin Markison who both fell short of a title. Ex-Pack defenseman Mike Paliotta (Westport/Choate Prep) was a Black Ace and didn’t dress for any games of the Calder Cup playoffs. PLAYER  AND COACHING MOVEMENT Another ex-Wolf Pack is hanging up the skates. The ever-ebullient and self-confident Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau is retiring. PA, as he was known, came to the Wolf Pack in 2008. He would play two-and-a-half seasons in Hartford. In 181 games he had 83 goals and 96 assists (179 points) and 286 PIM. He was an Assistant Captain in his last season. Starting his full-time NHL career at age 27, Parenteau tallied 114 goals and added 182 assists over 491 games. He played  with the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, New Jersey Devils and Nashville Predators. The Boucherville, Quebec, native who was born in Hull (nee Gatineau), entered the league as ninth-round draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks in 2001. He became an NHL regular with the New York Islanders during the 2010-11 season. Parenteau matched his career-high with 20 goals in 77 games with the Maple Leafs during the 2015-16 season. He played in a Stanley Cup final with Nashville two years ago. He resides with his family in the greater Moncton, New Brunswick area where he started his career with the Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL). Former Whaler Dave Tippett has surfaced after leaving the Arizona Coyotes as their head coach just about a year ago. Tippett has been named a Special Advisor for Seattle Hockey Partners LLC., the operating company for the potential Seattle NHL franchise. They are working on completing their NHL expansion application that will likely to be voted on in the fall by the NHL BOG. Clearly, Tippett will have a role with the team in some fashion when that day comes. READ MORE HERE Wethersfield native and ex-Sound Tiger, Colin McDonald, re-signs an AHL veteran deal with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for a fourth straight year. He has worn the C in all four years for the Phantoms. The team will celebrate their fifth year in Allentown, PA this year. McDonald will be earning more than $300K a year. His father Gerry played for the Whalers and Nighthawks. In addition, the Flyers announced they had signed former UCONN (HE) defenseman Dallas Drake to an AHL deal likely at the AHL minimum of $70K a year. The deal comes after UCONN was knocked out by BU in the Hockey East playoffs. The towering 6'6, Drake, signed an ATO deal and played seven games with the Phantoms - including one at the XL Center near the end of the season. Former Yale Bulldog John Hayden signed a two-year, one-way contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) at $700K in year one and $800K in the second season. The AHL players to Europe has picked up as Ben Smith (Avon/Westminster Prep) literally out celebrating his Calder Cup win with his Toronto teammates last Thursday. Their captain saw a press release early in the morning German time that he had agreed to a three year deal with Adler Mannheim (Germany-DEL). Markus Eisenschmid will be a teammate as he returns to his native Germany. Eisenschmid leads Laval for Adler Mannheim (Germany-DEL). Alex Grant departs Iowa to Jokerit Helsinki (Finland-KHL) and Ty Loney, the son of former NHL’er Troy Loney, after splitting the season with Bakersfield and Syracuse while the part of his season was with Adirondack (ECHL) heads to EC Graz (Austria-AEHL). The latest pair is defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk. After playing 629 AHL games, Bonarchuk leaves Texas for EHC Munich (Germany-DEL) while teammate Tyler Kelleher, acquired from Milwaukee, at the trade deadline, signs with ERC Ingolstadt (Germany-DEL). That makes 25 players from 16 AHL teams that have signed for Europe thus far and more to come. Derek Army, joins his father, Tim (now with the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins as an assistant coach) in the coaching ranks. He retired as an active player to become the assistant coach for the Worcester Railers (ECHL) in the fall. In his youth, Army played for Hotchkiss Prep (Washington, CT). Doug Christiansen, a former Danbury Trasher and Bridgeport Sound Tiger, was named the new head coach of the Manchester Monarchs (ECHL). He had been the USHL Director of Player Development the last four years. The Maple Leafs and Marlies have officially announced they are making the expansion Newfoundland Growlers their ECHL affiliate starting in the fall. The Maple Leafs had their AHL team in St. John’s from 1992 until 2007 before moving them to Toronto. In THIS story, the St. John’s Telegram on Sunday reported that former Ranger, Ryane Clowe, a Newfoundland native will be their very first head coach. Closer to home, the Adirondack Thunder (ECHL), who were purchased from Calgary a year ago by a local consortium called the Adirondack Civic Center Coalition, have made the final lease payment on their initial lease for the Thunder. The contract now takes them out to 2019 with an option of buying the building now known as the Cool Insuring Arena, formerly the Glens Falls Civic Center. Another playing Marchment this time has a new deal. Jake Marchment, the cousin to Mason, who split last season with Colorado (ECHL) and Utah (ECHL) on an AHL contract, signed with San Antonio and has signed an ECHL deal with Utah for next season. Ex-Pack, Jeff Ulmer, after playing in 1,147 games from the SJHL, NCAA, AHL to Europe in 25 cities, 17 leagues in 19 years, has retired after playing last year for EHC Lustenau (Austria-AlpsHL). Ulmer will be taking a yet to be announced job in hockey. His brother Jason also played in the AHL and Europe is also retired and is now the assistant coach at North Dakota. Kevin McKernan, of Quinnipiac University (ECACHL) and who played a few games in Ft. Wayne (ECHL) after the college season ended has signed a one year ECHL deal with the South Carolina Stingrays for next season. Ex-Sound Tiger, Tanner Eberle, who split last season between Allen (ECHL) and Jacksonville (ECHL), signs with the Sheffield Steelers (England-EIHL). Mike Dalhuisen, a former Sound Tiger and QU Bobcat, goes from Torpedo-Ust Kamenogorsk (Russia-VHL) to EC Bad Nauheim (Germany-DEL-2). Ex-Sound Tiger, Krill Kabanov, goes from the Danish champs Aalborg Pirates to the Krefeld Penguins (Germany-DEL). Glen Hanlon, a former Ranger and Nighthawk, was named the new head coach for DVTK (Hungary-MOL). Tomi Kallio, the boyhood hero of the Wolf Pack’s Lias Andersson, announced his retirement from hockey at age 41 after completing the season with TPS Turku (Finland-FEL). Kallio played with Andersson’s father Niclas in the 1990’s. Another NCAA player has signed to head for Europe. That makes 19 college players that have signed for Europe as Tyko Karjalainen returns home from Clarkson (ECACHL) to Finland to play with Kiekko-Vantaa (Division-1). 109 collegians have now signed prop deals since the end of the college hockey season. Two Hockey East transfers to Penn State from the Merrimack Warriors. Evan Bell, who left Merrimack after the first semester last year to go to the Fargo Force (USHL) where he helped lead them to the Clark Cup title, will be able to play for the Nittany Lions starting second semester. Ludvig Larsson leaves under the grad transfer rule because he obtained his undergraduate degree and can play immediately, but for only one year. Larsson become the first Swedish player and grad transfer for the six year old Division I program. Arizona State announced it will begin building a new hockey arena on campus starting in the spring of next year. Putting up this building will help the Sun Devils, currently operating as a NCAA Division I independent, to select a conference. This will likely help the Pac-10 take a dip into the college hockey pond in starting a true US West Coast Division I college hockey conference especially when Seattle is granted a 32nd NHL franchise sometime in the fall. The latest from the Arizona Republic can be read right HERE The roster for the US WJC team camp that will be held at the site of the summer WJC Summer Showcase (WJCSS) in Kamloops,BC  July 28-August 2 features a few CT names. In goal 2019, NHL Draft eligible, Spencer Knight (Darien/Avon Old Farms) a BC commit, sophomore goalie Keith Petruzzelli (Quinnipiac University) and Cayden Primeau, son of former Whaler Keith who is a sophomore as well at Northeastern (HE) and a Montreal draft pick. On defense, another pair of sophomores, Phil Kemp (Greenwich/Brunswick Prep) from Yale University (ECACHL) and Ben Miragaes (Avon Old Farms) from Providence College (HE). Then Mattias Samuelsson, a freshmen at Michigan (Big 10) and son of former Nighthawk and NHL’er, Kjell Samuelsson. Then up front Jack Drury, son of ex-Whaler Ted Drury and nephew of current Hartford GM and Rangers assistant GM Chris Drury who is Harvard (ECACHL) bound following his father’s skate blades. The brothers Drury from Trumbull played their high school hockey at Fairfield Prep where their number 18 is retired. Former Beast of New Haven Pat Mikesch now head coach/GM for the Green Bay Gamblers (USHL) was named as guest coach for the US team at the WJCSS. Read the full article
