Fine are like the pseudo-villains, esp eichi, but it's mostly just a farce. eichi acts in a lot of ways that directly hurt people (and caused an entire arc called the war) but usually does what he does with good intentions behind them. i have mixed feelings on the guy tho so. sdkjgh . also stream hajimari no fantasia. Trickstar is like the unofficial "main" group of enstars and tbh i dislike their music but they're a cute little unit. best friends. love mao btw. mao is also ritsu's childhood friend and also they're kinda gayasses together. RYUSEITAI is based off of like, superhero shows :) their whole gimmick is being superheros and their music is very upbeat and fun :) silly little guys. Double Face died. yeah they're dead. ANYWAY. mama and kohaku kill people. that's it. did i forget to mention that kohaku was raised to be an assassin and kills people? yeah. that 15 year old has killed. anyway df died and mama is going on hiatus and kohaku is just kinda there.

Karuta are Japanese playing cards. There are many kinds of Karuta, but supposedly Eichi is basing his Idol Karuta on the E-awase game. The yomifuda (reading cards) will write idol’s characteristics on it while torifuda (grabbing cards) will have idol’s face on. You have to match the correct yomifuda with its torifuda.

Educational sweets that Hokuto mentioned are the kind that you make and eat, like a kit set of DIY candy.

Now, let me rate all of the characters in the units:

Valkyrie: Mika's cool, I don't really like Shu so far :( the uniforms are soo cool though

Eden: Hiyori looks cool I guess 👍 I don't know the others' names sksjdjsj Nagisa, Jun(?) and maybe something beginning with I? Ibara? I keep thinking Isara, but I know he's the guy from Trickstar, anyway, I don't know a lot about Eden, I like their uniforms

2wink: my silly little guys, I love em <3 they are so joyous and fun, and also I randomly got a 5 star Hinata card the other day so I might be biased shskdjsj (also why are they called 2wink????? 😭😭😭)

Akatsuki: Keito and Kiryu are cool, Souma is so blorbo <3 I like their uniforms but it unnerves me how there's no sleeves

Knights: 💥💥💥💥 you've told me stuff about Leo before but he's not in the anime so idk that much about him tbh 😭😭 Izumi's kind of an asshole so far but his design is cool so I'll let him get away with it, Arashi and Ritsu are so cute, I love em <3

Alright you asked for distraction. So... next shuffle is gonna be Yuzuru, Ibara (YES I WIN), Rinne, Subaru, and Tomoya, right? I'm personally hoping that Tomoya will center cause it'd be hilarious.

So next shuffle's probably in a few months, and since we got the current one in november, we're probably skipping the winter season. So for theme I'm guessing...

Fairytale prince? Would be fitting for tomoya center subaru 5*. I think Rinne's gonna be hilarious and I'm gonna point and laugh at him.

I'm personally hoping for no military theme cause it'll tip things too much to ibara and yuzuru's direction.

If Tomoya can fully embrace his normal-ness we can do a "next-door-neighbor" theme. You know, like... the childhood friend kind of MV. They'd have... idk... jacket and a single rolled up pant leg or something... And you'd get them walking to school together or something. I know this is not realistic. I want to see Ibara and Yuzuru and Rinne pretend to be normal kids. It would be funny...

Demons. Okay, so hear me out, both Subaru and Tomoya had Japanese Oni themed scouts. So a demon theme would be neat to see for them (a bit of sexy rights for these two who don't get that treatment very often) and suitable for the other three.

Yeah I don't have other thoughts or ideas for this one...

I still think that's one of the funniest possible shuffle unit outcomes they literally put Tomoya together with the guy that's so polite it's a little concerning, the guy that pretends to be some evil mastermind, sparkle boy and Rinne Amagi. Amazing I bet the story will be so dope!

Also yeah fairytale princess that's a very early spring theme I can see that as a concept ohhh I hope they do that I wanna see Rinne get fine-ified it would be so off brand but I think he could work it somehow

yeah same tbh I don't really like military themed stuff in general but it also would be Very ibayuzu focused which. the likelyhood is there I'm sure it could be good but again. hm.

ALSO NEXT-DOOR-NEIGHBOUR THAT'D BE SUCH A CONCEPT FOR THEM!!!! Shame it's unrealistic but it would be so cool the MV outfits could just be normal highschool uniforms with like. some character specific twists to them and the MV itself could have kind of a Finder Girl vibe and ooooh I like that they should deserve to be normal kids even if it's just for one event,,

Demons also such a banger concept they could all pull it off we know Yuzu looks good in that kinda aesthetic and I just checked out the Subaru cards he looks so awesome woah,, and Rinne is tall and red and he has the perfect grin he'd be perfect for that!

we could also get a valentines day shuffle no? or is that unlikely because there's already like two of those and fine already had a valentines day song so Yuzu already got the valentines treatment? I don't think it'll be another easter one they already did that and guessing by the time frames between the shuffles it's every 2-3 months right??

Alternatively there's also clubbing shuffle which is really basic but fun and it's a little more adultish which is something Tomoya and Subaru don't really get often, But mind you I mean the Dance Floor kinda clubbing and not the Night Club kinda clubbing,, I'd also love t if they go full 80s on this one but that would not happen I am 100% certain that would not happen

Hajime: Umm, I’ll summarise what we know so far.

The “Old-Fashioned Sports Festival” will be held over three days. It’s three times longer than last year’s.

Mitsuru: It’s one of those things where if you go too hard on the first day, you’ll end up regretting it later, y’know! Be careful, Hajime-chan, you’ve always been on the lower side when it comes to stamina.

Hajime: I will. Ehehe…♪ “Tanabata Fest” was also very tiring so I was exhausted in the end too.

Tomoya: There’s been a lot of events that require quite a bit of stamina recently. I wonder if it’s because Anzu-senpai likes them.

Hajime: Fufu. Having the Sports Festival over the span of a day is already very tiring, so to think it’ll continue for two more days? That will probably drain the life out of me.

Tomoya: Actually, won’t the participants and the audience get sick and tired of it after three days?

Hajime: Oh, it seems we don’t need to worry about that.

It appears there will be mood changes for the “Old-Fashioned Sports Festival” events.

Tomoya: Hmm…?

Hajime: Ah, I’ll draw a picture and describe it. *Scribble scribble...♪*

Ehehe. As you can see, the “Old-Fashioned Sports Festival” are split as follows: “Day 1: The Sky Category”, “Day 2: The Ocean Category” and “Day 3: The Land Category”.

Tomoya: The land, sea and air[*] , huh… I don’t really like the sound of it since it sounds like it’s related to the military.

Hajime: It seems it’s based on the old style, so it’s an event from “that era”...

I overheard Eichi Onii-chan accidentally spilling something along the lines of that.

In any case, umm, that’s what the sports festival will be like… Day 1 will consist of events associated with the sky and Day 2 will be related to the sea.

It seems… we’ll only be doing normal sports festival events on Day 3.

They gave a brief explanation about that during the opening ceremony you were absent in.

Tomoya: They only gave a brief explanation? That’s totally like performing without a rehearsal… Aren’t you supposed to practise properly first and then take part in the Sports Festival?

Hajime: There’s no point in complaining to me, though. You should say these things to the management behind the event. This time, umm, that would be people like Anzu Nee-chan, who’s in the ES “P-Association".

Tomoya: I-I’m not complaining or anything. But I see. So the “P-Association” is handling it this time.

Mitsuru: Looks like it~ It also looks like the Student Council or the “producer course” aren’t involved even though it’s a school event.

Hajime: That’s right. From the public’s perspective, it completely feels like an ES event.

Tomoya: Hmm~... It’s hard to complain when you’re also a part of that but, for some reason, I don’t like how ES is meddling with the school’s affairs too.

I don’t really know how to explain it, but I want the school to be a world just for kids… I feel like I want them to be left alone… Let them do what they want.

Mitsuru: Me too! It kinda feels suffocating, y’know!

Adonis: Are you all right, Tenma!? You’re suffocating!? Shall we go to the medical tent!?

Mitsuru: What’s up all of a sudden, Ado-chan-senpai!?

Kouga: Hey, rabbits, looks like you guys are doin’ better than I thought.

There, there ♪ Heard you collapsed the other day, but you doin’ okay, Plain Face~?

Tomoya: Please don’t call me that~ It bothers me, you know…?

Adonis: That’s right, Oogami. You might not mean anything bad by it, but you can hurt others with those thoughtless sayings.

Narukami complained day and night last year about your nicknames.

Kouga: W-Why didn’t ya tell me sooner!? It’s hard for me to notice that myself, ya know!

Tomoya: Ahaha. “Team RhyLin” is RhyLin, alright. Maybe it’s because this is a school event, but it feels pretty carefree. Probably because there aren’t any veteran thorns in our sides like usual.

Kouga: You’re right about that. Not seeing a single old person in my field of vision feels so refreshing~ …Honestly, though, school events are such a pain in the ass, I just wanna go home.

Tomoya: Ahaha, that’s the kind of character you are, huh, Oogami-senpai.

Kouga: Hey, whaddya mean by that?

Adonis: Fufu. But it seems there haven’t been a lot of people who have been feeling well, so we should be careful not to overdo it. Especially you, Mashiro, you’ve just recovered, right?

Kouga: Yeah, yeah. Just leave the events to the muscle-heads like Adonis and Zakki~

Souma: …………

Kouga: H-Huh? Oi, I mentioned you in our convo, so you should at least react, right? Or, what, do you also not like the name “Zakki~” or somethin’...?

Souma: Hm? No, almost no one ever calls me by a nickname, so, if anything, it is rather pleasant to hear you and Akehoshi-dono refer to me with one.

However, there is something on my mind unrelated to that.

Hajime: Something on your mind…? I-Is it some kind of concern?

Souma: I cannot conclude it will be a concern yet, but I had a mysterious message.

A few minutes ago, I received an urgent message from Hasumi-dono stating that they will be selecting someone to be the head of each team.

Mitsuru: The head…? Whaddya mean?

Adonis: It means the leader.

Souma: Yes. You can also call it a leader.

All the members of each team will be under that leader’s command. It also seems there will be events where you mustn't act on your own accord, but according to the leader’s orders.

Mitsuru: Hmm~...? Is there a problem with that? It’s always like that in our “units”, right? We listen to our leader and do what he tells us to, y’know!

Tomoya: You don’t really listen to what I say, though…

Souma: Indeed. There are no issues with the structure.

But the issue is that ES will be the one to select each team’s leader.

And the one chosen to be “Team RhyLin’s” leader is you, Mashiro.

Tomoya: Huh? Wha? Me? I’m “Team RhyLin’s” leader…?

which sexuality each enstars character has? well its easy...

wataru likes men but he would still fall in love with eichi and tomoya if they were girls. tomoya is bisexual but wouldnt use the label. eichi is just gay but he would treat his wife nicely if he got married for political reasons even if he couldnt love her properly. tori actually doesnt care too much about sex and romance but he would enjoy his life more if he got with eichi but if he got a wife he would be happy actually too. hajime is asexual and aromantic but feels deeply jealous of tomoya to the point people think its romantic but it isnt. its just extremely intense but its not romantic love. nazuna is straight. mitsuru is pan but isnt and will never actively look for romance. yuzuru likes men but would kiss women. mayoi actively avoids labeling his own sexuality. tatsumi doesnt think in labels either and he is fine with whatever. aira thinks his situation is very complicated and adores microlabels despite being more or less fine with everything. hiiro likes women and men and would use bisexual if introduced to the label. aira does this job btw. rinne sexuality is "love wins <3" and he has zero angst about it. niki thought he was gay but later discovered he is also into girls (brief crush on anzu) but he still calls himself gay. himeru likes bears, regardless of the bear gender. kohaku has a gay thing going on but he doesnt care enough to label it either. madara is straight with exceptions. rei is gay. kaoru is bisexual. adonis would be bisexual if he cared enough to label his sexuality but he is fine with how he is right now and frankly he wont have angst regarding his partners gender in the future so he will never care too much about it. keito likes men and women but he would be weird about having a wife. arashi is bisexual but will mostly end up dating women later in life. its not intentional its just how things work out in the end. izumi is demi. leo does not care. ritsu DEEPLY doesnt care. tsukasa is gay and weird about it. mao is straight with ritsu as his exception. makoto is straight but wouldnt refuse to kiss a guy. hokuto is gay. subaru is bisexual but wont actively look for romance like ever. chiaki is deeply, deeply bisexual. tetora is bisexual but prefers girls. midori has not thought and will never think about his sexuality but somehow kinda expects to just get a wife at some point in the future. shinobu doesnt care enough about this side of his life honestly. kanata is gay with exceptions but doesnt care to label himself. ibara is bisexual. hiyori is just happy to be alive. jun likes girls and boys but pretends that his attraction to boys is a surprise. mika is gay and normal about it. shu is bisexual. yuuta is bisexual. hinata is gay but wouldnt mind being married to a woman. koga loves dudes but thinks girls are cool. he isnt sure if he would date one tho. if he did he would be fine however. souma doesnt care at all. kuro is pansexual. aoba is asexual but is fine with any gender. natsume is straight with many exceptions but doesnt really identify with either bisexual or pansexual.

finally, anzu is bisexual. gatekeeper is bisexual also, but he also wont ever get into a relationship.

Even if my acting right now is nothing more than a bad imitation...!

This phrase first appears in Phantom Thieves VS Detectives/Epilogue 4, and later in Transparency and Masks/G in a Maze - 8.

Tomoya uses "日々" for "each day" here, possibly relating to Wataru's last name (日々樹).

Wataru's heavily associated with the sun, or anything that's "bright" and cheerful. Taking 白 from Tomoya's last name (真白) and combining it with 日 from Wataru's (日々樹) creates 白日, meaning bright sunlight, broad daylight.

Transparency and Masks/G in a Maze - 8 references this phrase, but the "might" turned into "will" in here.

2020 J-entertainment review

I don't normally do this, but 2020 has been a bit of a shocking year for unexpected deaths, as well as a surprising year for unexpected marriages. I guess, as society goes into isolation, people become even more anxious and lonely. This may bring people closer together, or drive them further apart. Quite a lot of the momentous news this year involved people I liked.

Obituaries

Shimura Ken - RIP 29/3/2020 I admit I only knew him from Shimura Ken Doubutsuen, and he seemed like a decent gentle sort of guy. He was one of the first famous people to pass away from COVID, and it had come as a shock as he was still at work up until a few days prior. According to Wikipedia, it seems he has had some trouble with his health in recent years, so it wasn't all unexpected, but it certainly brought the virus into people's consciousness. I tried to go back and watch some of the comedy skits that made him famous, and let's just say the Japanese have a sense of humour that does not sit well with people brought up in the West, particularly not in the post-#MeToo era. Miura Haruma - RIP 18/7/2020 From what peole were reporting, it seems like he had very high standards for himself, and talked about quitting the industry multiple times in the past. He had really matured a lot in his acting over the years, and is probably among the best among his age cohort. It's certainly a big loss to the industry. Ashina Sei - RIP 14/9/2020 I remember her from Bloody Monday, where I first saw Miura Haruma. She played a no-nonsense policewoman, and that largely became her type. She's got the sort of cool assertive air about her which tend not to do well in Japan (ala Nanao who played aggressive femme fatale types for years before she finally got some decent semi-lead roles). I had a soft spot for her, and I'm sad to see her go. Takeuchi Yuuko - RIP 27/9/2020 The news of Ashina Sei's passing was swallowed up quickly by the death of Takeuchi Yuuko, a well-liked and well-regarded actress who has gone from being cast as the sweetheart in romcoms to subversive strong women in Scandal and Miss Sherlock. She's also someone whose acting has improved tremendously over the years, and one of the minority of Japanese actresses who can master domineering when she wants to. Another great loss to the industry.

Marriages

- Ikuta Toma + Seino Nana: maybe I haven't been paying much attention to Toma's rumours, but I had no idea they were together. She feels mature beyond her years and should be a sweet match! - Ishihara Satomi + non-industry person: she's as cute as a button even though some of her roles can be super annoying. I'm glad she's continuing on with her career after marriage (although she definitely strikes me as someone who values her independence) - Toda Erika + Matsuzaka Toori: I've adored Toda Erika since Engine and she gets cooler with age. This did come a bit out of the blue because the last I heard, Toda was dating Narita Ryou. She also went through that awful time dating Ayano Gou, where she lost so much weight and didn't look happy. Matsuzaka does more movies than dramas these days, so I rarely see him, but he better take care of her! - Yamamoto Midzuki + Seto Koji: both have been playing supporting roles for a very long time (and to be honest, their acting isn't up to scratch for leads), but them meeting and becoming a couple because of a mutual love for drawing is the cutest thing ever.

Scandals

- Higashide Masahiro cheating on wife Ann: I feel so bad for Ann because she had to put up with her cheating father (Watanabe Ken) and clearly got into the marriage hoping for a happy ending, even gives up her acting career (which was doing better than Higashide's at the time) only to be backstabbed. - Watabe Ken cheating on wife Sasaki Nozomi: her acting isn't great but she's gorgeous and got spunk. It's rumoured that she has a gangster past so I hope she makes him sorry for his mistake. - Yamashita Tomohisa allegedly drank alcohol and slept with an underage girl (who allegedly told him she was of age), then got annoyed that he was getting punished and decided to quit JE. Since Johnny-san's death, there has been a mass exodus from JE, although to be honest most of them were people who thought more of their career than they were worth. I do like Nagase Tomoya though, who's leaving early next year, so I hope he does well.

let’s check in with Aira first, since I’ve mentioned him in every post so far. Aira doesn’t have an ability, but he takes the role of lucy here plot wise. he’s just some normal guy that works for the Guild (insert rumors about Aira and Shu being related because of the French Thing) but Kohaku saves him during the conflict and he ends up working at Cafe Cinnamon with Niki, and also befriends some guy that has his face on Wanted posters (Hiiro).

Shu is the leader of the Guild. their main Thing is buying illegal art because Shu has a Collection. also he likes anonymously catching art thieves and forgers and turning them it. it’s complicated. he seeks the Book to create the ultimate art form. Shu’s ability is Mademoiselle’s Room (like anne’s room) and Mademoiselle is one of his most trusted advisors...

...along with Mika. Mika isn’t very confident, but he’s good at thinking of everything... like, everything. Shu’s other right-hand person, along with Mado-nee.

Nazuna used to be closer to Shu, but they began to disagree on artistic matters and then on business. nowadays, it’s rare to see them in the same room.

The other members of Ra*bits (in game) usually work as a unit with Nazuna. Hajime works with the Guild to support his family and has the ability Gone With The Wind. Mitsuru... sure. Mitsuru has the ability thats just two little guys. Tomoya’s box says “some guy” because i don’t know who James L is and he’s not important and also dead. Tomoya is important and not dead.

Kunugi-sensei is much less active than he used to be, and is mostly just here for his ability which has been transformed into an airship. yknow. the usual.

Tatsumi is from a religious family and his ability is the Scarlet Letter. He often works as a team with Natsume and Hajime (nice gardenia reference, nerd). Very devoted to his colleagues. more on that next post.

Natsume’s ability sucks people into another world created through witchcraft (yes like poe’s ability. but also like natsume’s canon vr world. for funsies). He took this ability into a DIY escape room contest and was absolutely demolished when Leo entered. he’s kind of bitter about that. would follow Shu-niisan to the ends of the world, or maybe just Yokohama. he occasionally visits the Agency after confronting Leo, and ends up close with Sora.

Mayoi is an eldritch being. rarely seen out of his room. on the occasions he works with Tatsumi he keeps babbling about how horrendous he is and how Tatsumi wants nothing to do with him, and Tatsumi is just like, chill out, you are lovely and one of god’s creations, and Mayoi turns into a creature. they make a good team nonetheless.

Izumi and Arashi were outstanding models and ballet partners, such that they caught Shu’s eye. Izumi has a sharp tongue but a valuable eye for aesthetics, and he’s banned from the Agency premises. Arashi and Aira are good friends that go shopping together and after the whole mess, Arashi becomes a regular customer at Cafe Cinnamon.

Love Is Beauty, Love Is Pure

Nagisa’s chopsticks fell to the ground when his hand went limp in shock, his half-eaten piece of sushi rolling on the grass song with them, grains of rice scattering about as the seaweed unrolled. The boy himself was completely unaware that he had dropped his beloved lunchtime snack as he was too focused on not dying - what with the fact that he was choking on his bite of sashimi and rice. Everyone around him was looking over in shock and immediately began trying to help him: Maehara began banging his spine with his clenched fist as hard as possible, Sugino riffled through his schoolbag to procure a plastic bottle of water, and Okajima desperately asked him if he wanted him to do the Heimlich Maneuver (“Okajima, you don’t even know the Heimlich Maneuver,” Kataoka deadpanned). Once it was clear that he was done coughing, Sugino, who was gently caressing his back, offered him the uncapped water bottle. Blushing darkly at the scrutinising looks of concern from his classmates, he wordlessly took the bottle and took small sips of it, ducking his head so that his bangs obstructed his vision of everyone.

It started out normally enough: the students of Class 3-E were gathered around the steps on the side of the building, sitting either on them or on the grass, as they spent their lunch break digging into their bento boxes while sharing stories and laughter. Somehow, they were recounting their weekends and Sugino pitched in how he and Nagisa had met up and went to the park together and somehow ran into Seo Tomoya, Araki Teppei and Sakakibara Ren of Class A’s Five Virtuosos later on in the day.

“Oh god, not those a-holes,” Maehara groaned in sympathy.

Isogai winced, “they didn’t give you guys any trouble did they?”

“They better not have,” Karma narrowed his eyes and punched his palm, “I swear if they did anything…”

“What?! No no,” Nagisa held his hands out palms-forward and shook them in a placating gesture, “it’s fine really. They barely even touched us.”

Karma just hummed and continued sipping from his milk box.

“They were acting like complete douches though,” Sugino said, frowning, “you know the usual stuff: about how they were better than us and how us E-Class kids are worthless and they were going to crush us and humiliate us - all that jazz.”

“Jerks,” Okano muttered in disdain as she angrily used her chopsticks to pierce through her tamagoyaki - most probably pretending that she was stabbing a main campus student in the chest.

“So same old, same old, huh?” Kimura laughed with a sad smile.

“But that’s not all,” Sugino stated, “Araki began targeting Nagisa.”

“WHAT!” Fuwa yelled.

“What did he do?” Karma scowled darkly, crushing his now finished milk carton in a hand.

“I swear Nagisa,” Fuwa looked at him with a passionate gaze as burning as a hundred blazing suns, “if those A Class neanderthals did anything I will avenge you.”

“You really don’t need to do that,” Nagisa said quickly.

“I’M GONNA ANYWAY!”

“What did he say?” Maehara asked.

Nagisa looked down and murmured, “just made some comments about my looks. Nothing I haven’t heard before.”

“Yeah and Ren was flirting with him which was weird,” Sugino scrunched his nose up in disgust, “he was all like “you know, if you were a girl - I wouldn’t mind helping you out.””

“Ugh, seriously,” Kataoka rolled her eyes, “as if any girl would want his help, anyway.”

“Yeah,” Nakamura nodded, “I don’t know about the main campus trash but I have standards.”

“Like what?” Karma asked innocently, “Tom Hiddleston?”

“Wh-How did you-” Nakamura turned red, “God. Shut Up!”

Sugino’s mouth started to curl upwards, “But you see Nagisa’s got more maturity in one hand than those three could ever dream of so he just stays quiet. So then Seo goes “come on Shiota, not going to say anything? Are you E-Class nobodies so dumb that you don’t even know how to speak correctly?” And Nagisa just smiles and says “well, no one plans a murder out loud” and walked right past him without looking back. Man, you should’ve seen the looks on their faces - I had to resist bursting out laughing then and there.”

Everyone just erupted into laughter and Nagisa was bombarded with words of praise as people gathered around him.

“Well done, Nagisa!” Okano punched him in the arm with a wink.

“Yeah, that’s Nagisa for you,” Yoshida smirked with crossed arms, “he may look cute and sweet but he sure knows how to shut someone up.”

“Serves them right,” Kurahashi nodded.

Nakamura grinned, “yeah, at least now they know not to mess with us.”

Maehara ruffled his hair and hooked an arm around the bluenette’s shoulders, “Super proud of you, dude. Like seriously, Nagisa, that’s why we love you.”

And that’s how Nagisa found himself choking on his handmade salmon sushi infront of his classmates.

“Umm, Nagisa?” Sugino asked, his eyebrows furrowed in worry as he continued his ministrations on his best friend’s back, “what was that about? Are you alright?”

“Oh no-nothing,” Nagisa replied softly, his voice shaking, “I’m fine re-really. Just-just give me a second.”

“You are okay,” Isogai’s eyes raked his body in perturbation, “right Nagisa?”

“Yeah, it’s-it’s just what Maehara said that shocked me, is all. No one - no one’s ever said that to me like that,” Nagisa could feel his already red face get even hotter at his quiet admission. 

Complete uncomfortable silence filled the area as everyone digested that information.

“What?” Kurahashi gasped, “no one’s ever told you that they love you.”

“Wha- no. I mean, my parents have told me that before but it’s just not as easily as Maehara did and well he said it so unprompted that it caught me off guard.”

And that’s the truth. His father isn’t around to tell him that he loves him and when he does, it’s always just a brief throwaway line, like it’s an afterthought to remind himself that Nagisa is his son and that’s what he’s supposed to say. He still remembers how around five years ago, he stood by the front door as his dad was about to leave, the hell-hole Nagisa called home being far too much for him. The older man only looked back to say “I love you but I can’t handle your mother anymore” and walked away without another word. Yeah, his father’s version of love was abandonment. His mother only says it when he’s down. She pets his hair and kisses his cheek with a sweet smile and purrs out “you know I’m only doing this because I love you, sweetheart”, “do you really think anyone else would love and care for you the way I do”, “You see, honey, you know I’m right - oh I love you so much”. For Maehara to just come out and say that all on his own and so happily and care-free just made no sense. Knowing how to read people is the one thing he’s good at yet Maehara’s body language is as illegible as the doctor’s note he got back in Elementary School - his words just didn’t match his actions and Nagisa was so confused.

Mimura raised an eyebrow, “You shouldn’t be prompted to say I love you to your child.”

Nagisa just shrugged and then had his breath knocked out of him when Yada came barreling forward and crushed his torso in a tight embrace, “Wha-”

“We love you, Nagisa,” Yada, tears streaming down her face, “we all love you so much.”

At Nagisa’s look of pure shock and confusion she just hugged him tighter.

No one’s ever said that to me like that

‘No one,’ Yada thought, ‘should ever look so shocked to hear that they’re loved.’

She was immediately joined by Kurahashi and Okano and Maehara and Kayano and Fuwa and somehow Nagisa found himself in the middle of a hugging pile made up of the majority of his classmates.

“It’s true,” Kurahashi beamed, although her eyes were gleaming with sadness, “we all really really love you.”

“How could we not?” Maehara asked, “you’re a pretty hard person to dislike.”

“You’re more than just a classmate to us, Nagisa,” Okano smiled, “you’re like a brother.”

“I-I am?” Nagisa said softly.

“YES!”

“Of course you are,” Kataoka nodded firmly.

“You didn’t know,” Sugino looked guilty, “surely - surely you must have known something.”

“Yeah, Nagisa,” Nakamura smiled fondly, “you’re our blueberry cinnamon roll. You think you’re not part of our weirdly dysfunctional family. Please, you’re already on the Christmas card.”

“Yeah,” Karma smirked, though he squirmed uncomfortably, “what they said.”

“I-I love you guys, too,” Nagisa gave all of them a small smile, wiping his eyes and feeling embarrassed when he finds wetness around them, “you guys are the brothers and sisters I’ve always wanted.”

To be honest, he supposes that in his head he always knew that the relationship he had with his classmates was something he could never pinpoint and even know having the truth displayed out in front of him still felt like a dream. He never understood what true love is, but sitting here, packed inside this mess of his friends like a sardine in a tin, he supposes that that warm feeling that was being emitted from his classmates that promised him comfort and protection and everything else he craved but never asked for, well, it must be something pretty close to that.

Transparency and Masks

tried translating the first chapter. take with a grain of salt as i’m pretty inexperienced translating. 

WATARU: .......

HOKUTO: Buchou. No, Wataru-san. I'm in love with you. Would you please go out with me?

WATARU: Mm~~.... I give you 3 points!

HOKUTO: Tch. What wasn't good enough? Perhaps it's wrong to say so about myself, but I think it was a significant improvement from before. No... what would be more useful right now is knowing what I did right, rather than what was lacking. Considering who I'm talking to, if it had been completely hopeless I wouldn't have gotten any points at all. 

So then, 3 points means there was something worthwhile in my 'love confession' just now, right? Which parts impressed you? Did you maybe feel your heart flutter, just a little?

WATARU: As oddly positive as ever, I see. Hmmm. Well, doing what was necessary without hesitation earned you a point, and choosing to attempt something like a 'love confession' is something you would  never have considered once, so that got you another. And for someone as full of themselves as you to come and request, "Please go out with me" was worth a point, too. All together, that makes a grand total of 3 points. Please be aware it's out of 100, so quite far from a passing mark, but you're certainly on  the right track! You've grown, Hokuto-kun, but you still fail!

HOKUTO: Ugh, I thought I'd get you with this one for sure, but no luck, I guess. I thought I should take the meaning of Amazing, surprise, which is to say doing something you wouldn't expect... Which is why I tried using words I would never ever say under normal circumstances. I need to rethink my plan.... Would it be acceptable to talk to the other members  of Trickstar about it?

WATARU: Of course it would be acceptable. If I didn't allow that it would make everything far too difficult. Please, feel free to use any and all relationships and skills you may have available, and try over again. I'm here waiting expectantly , Hokuto-kun. The theater club's clumsy little junior ~~~

HOKUTO: You could have kept that last bit to yourself. Remember this, I'll show you what I can do. Soon, I'm going to leave you speechless.

TOMOYA: ........

MITSURU: Hmhmhmmm! Dash dash dash and here I am! Mggguu!? Tomo-chan! Hiya! Sorry for crashing into ya there! Why're you just standing there anyway? You're in peoples' way, ya know?

TOMOYA: Ah, g'morning Mitsuru. You sure are lively first thing in the morning.

MITSURU: Ehehe, it's one of my strong points! But you seem pretty tired actually. Is something up? It's essential! To take care of yourself.

TOMOYA: Huh...? Oh yeah, sorry, you said that really weirdly so I didn't get what you meant for a second. You know, just repeating stuff you've heard other people say actually makes you sound dumber. 

MITSURU:  It's okay! If I use it wrong, someone smart around can tell what it actually means, and from then on I'll know! Miss Failure is the mother of Success, and together they make a family! Ha ha ha!

TOMOYA: Why did you phrase it like that...? Well whatever, thanks for worrying about me.

MITSURU: Hu~h? Well you and Hajime-chan always way overdo it and end collapsing. I have the best stamina of all of us, so I gotta watch over you! Nii-chan said the same thing! When he asks me to do stuff like that I get super happy, 'cuz it means be believes I can do it!

TOMOYA: Ah, right. You've grown up a lot recently, huh? I kinda worry I'm being left behind.

MITSURU: Woah, you really are down today! Come on, give me a smile! And then we'll dash to the classroom together so we aren't late! Come on, let's hold hands and go!  I'll take you to your classroom!

TOMOYA: W-woah, don't drag me!

MITSURU: Ooaah!? What's going on by the shoe rack, there's a ton of people over there! I can hardly move, is something serious going on?

TOMOYA: Well, I don't know about serious, but today Hokuto-senpai gave a 'love confession' to our club leader. I guess the people coming into school saw it and got kinda excited. They're just being nosy.

MITSURU: Confessed? Huh, what? They're both boys though? And wait, you reeeally love that 'Hokuto-senpai' guy, right? I guess you must have some complicated feelings right know, huh?

TOMOYA: .......

MITSURU: See! You waited too long, and now you've lost your chance! If you love someone, you gotta make sure they know about it!

TOMOYA: No, I'm always making sure he knows about it. Besides, it's not an actual confession. I think it's just Hokuto-senpai's attempt at Amazing.

MITSURU: 'Ameijingu'? What the heck is that, I don't really get what you're talking about anymore. But if you're worried, you can talk to me, right? I gotta make up for how much you're always taking care of me!

TOMOYA: Ahahaha..... Thanks, Mitsuru, really. But this is my fight. No. It's the greatest battle the members of the theater club will ever face.

Names?

What’s going on y’all! I’ve had a sort of weird time trying to go through my normal naming conventions and remembered about some of my V1.0 characters and names. I want to focus on a couple right now, but I’ll open the topic up later.

So, with these characters, I was still young and dumb at the time of their creation. I’ll focus on my first character for now: the hero, Energio. Now, how does one pronounce that? I like to pronounce it as “ehner-zhi-oh”. Does it mean anything? Where did it come from? Energio was one of my initial hero characters to be created. I had this idea that having 3 hero characters was cool, so I tried adapting 2 new characters (alongside Orbis) to encompass a “power” type and “speed” type. My speed type character went through many iterations, so that might be a whole post in and of itself, honestly. But my power type has had only 2 major changes.

Again, this was the “power” type character. So, I envisioned him immediately with an axe of sorts. But I also wanted the character to be a little more unique than just “big axe man go swingy swingy”. This created a really dumb ass weapon that was half axe, half katana. Yep, I created a ninja man who had an axe. It’s terrible to think about, but if you look at my old school concepts, you’d see where I was heading with it. I won’t explain too much right now, because that process involves something I want to explain later on, but you’ll most likely see it.

Names! Right. Again, stupid kid, so naming was hard for me. I wanted it to be symbolic, so the easiest thing for me to do was to go straight to google translate and see if there as something in there that I could use. I translated the word “power”, if I’m remembering correctly, to several different languages. Nothing stood out, until I hit upon “energia”. I don’t remember what language this was (I should probably look it up at some point, it might be fun to go through that) but i knew I had struck gold. Because my character was a male, I felt that naming him “Energia” would be a little confusing. This was around the time I was watching Clannad, which if you guys don’t know, has 2 characters, Tomoyo and Tomoya. One of my foreign friends watched it as I did and she would frequently get confused by the names, Tomoyo was a girl and Tomoya was a guy. Weird, right?

Anywho, I decided to change the “a” to an “o” just so people like my friend wouldn’t get confused by strange names. So, that’s one of my characters. Energio was concepted and named with a different language. Fun stuff, yeah? Looking at my second character here, it’s a lot easier to see where I was coming from with this name. This character is a villain who has fire abilities. I easily looked up different ways to say fire in different languages (I had definitely upgraded my way of naming by this point). I happened upon the french term flanbeaux. Does anyone know what a flambeaux is? It’s a torch! Like, specifically, a burning torch, ya know, a stick with fire on the end of it.

The fun thing about v1.0 Flambeaux (I have actually changed his name and design since then, but I’ll just refer to him as such for now) was he had this weapon that allowed him to use different elemental abilities. His concept was purely to counter Orbis with pure overwhelming ability. I’ve toned it down since, but at the time, even though his main power was fire, I knew that Flambeaux was a temporary name. It did stay for far longer than it should have, but that’s the legacy, so it were. 

And now, I open up this topic. I have since changed the way I name characters, trying to be less symbolic. Only because I feel like it’s kind of overdone now? If that makes sense? Anyway, how do you name characters? Do you just look up random character generators, or just start sounding out a word and whatever sounds nice you go with? I’d be interested to know, because I’ve recently found that borrowing a unique name from a show or game, maybe changing it up a little bit, and using it in leu of any weirdo name I might have created.
