The US CONGRESS literally went “hey, you should totally do that like we just made that Naval Advanced Tactical Fighter (NAFT) program for you in 1988 so you should def do it.” And in order to make it more appealing, they told the Air Force to evaluate the carrier-based stealth bomber as a potential replacement for their F-111, basically saying the Navy and Air Force would share development costs in theory as both branches could employ both variants or some shit because having an aircraft be multi-role is super appealing.

So thus the NATF-22 was created and very shortly thereafter crumbled up and thrown into the trash by an Admiral Richard Dunleavy as if it were nothing because it was (and I’m using a mocking tone of voice here) too expensive.

And for the record, I see no difference in how the rest of fighter jet history played out, we ended up with a multi-role fighter just as expensive. Like don’t get me wrong, I love the F-35 and it’s quirks like it’s not its fault it was brought up in a society with so much attention on it. The media outreach and coverage in todays world is unprecedented, like no aircraft has been scrutinized or so intensely studied and watched before her.

I imagine this program would have been Iceman’s BABY. He may not have been nearly high enough up in the chain at the time to have any knowledge of it let alone say in the matter, but you just know that when he found out what they could have had he was DEVASTATED. Full on, “WE COULD HAVE HAD A TOMCAT?!?!” moment right there. He mourned. He was inconsolable he straight up mourned his Rapcat. Or is it Tomtor?

And when the F-35 program rolled around you know he ain’t letting that happen again, with or without swept wings. He’s getting his F-35C.

Russian officials have already kicked off discussions with the US on cooperation in rare earths projects, presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev has revealed.

Endowed with 658 mln tons of rare metals, including up to 28.7 mln tons of rare earths crucial to modern high-tech, renewables and defense, Russia’s mineral riches account for 20% or more of the world’s rare earths stockpile, and thought to be second in size only to China (44 mln tons).

Russia’s rare earths are largely untapped and underdeveloped, and scattered at major deposits across the country, from the Arctic and Siberia to new regions like the Donbass.

Here’s A Selection:

Yttrium: Found in the Kola Peninsula, Transbaikalia, and the Ilmensky Mountains in the Southern Urals, this rare earth is used in phosphors, superconductors and as an additive for strengthening alloys.

Lanthanum: Found mainly in the Kola Peninsula and the Ilmensky Mountains, this material is used in hybrid car batteries, camera lenses, radiation-absorbing glasses.

Neodymium: Found in the Kola Peninsula and Yakutia at the Tomtor Deposit, this rare earth is used to make powerful permanent magnets for electric motors and wind turbines, electroacoustic equipment and lasers.

Dysprosium: Located in the Kola Peninsula, Yakutia and Transbaikal, this rare earth is also used for EV magnets, plus applications like control rods for nuclear reactors.

Cerium: Found in the same regions and the Southern Urals, this rare earth is used for specialized magnets for defense and aerospace use, and as a dopant for phosphors in electronic screens and lamps.

Lithium: While not strictly a rare earth, it is a critical mineral that’s essential for the West’s much-touted green transition. Russia’s lithium stocks are situated in Transbaikal and the Urals, Donetsk and Zaporozhye. Donetsk in particular is known to possess one of Europe’s largest hard-rock lithium reserves at its recently liberated Shevchenko deposit.

Introducing NNUE Evaluation

As of August 6, the efficiently updatable neural network (NNUE) evaluation has landed in the Stockfish repo!

What is NNUE?

Both the NNUE and the classical evaluations are available, and can be used to assign a value to a position that is later used in alpha-beta (PVS) search to find the best move. The classical evaluation computes this value as a function of various chess concepts, handcrafted by experts, tested and tuned using fishtest. The NNUE evaluation computes this value with a neural network based on basic inputs. The network is optimized and trained on the evaluations of millions of positions at moderate search depth.

The NNUE evaluation was first introduced in shogi, and ported to Stockfish afterward. It can be evaluated efficiently on CPUs, and exploits the fact that only parts of the neural network need to be updated after a typical chess move. The nodchip repository provides additional tools to train and develop the NNUE networks.

Results

The performance of the NNUE evaluation relative to the classical evaluation depends somewhat on the hardware, and is expected to improve quickly, but is currently on > 80 Elo on fishtest:

Trying it out

Stockfish 12 is not expected to be released imminently--we want some time to let this major change bake for a bit. But you might still want to try out NNUE! Three simple steps:

Download the latest development build of Stockfish (or build yourself, from GitHub)

Download the default net. Currently that would be nn-9931db908a9b.nnue but you can check which is the default one as indicated by the EvalFile UCI option. Place the .nnue file in the same directory as the engine binary. (Tip: you could also run the make net command from the src directory to automatically download the default net)

By default NNUE is off, but it can be enabled with the Use NNUE (true/false) UCI option, provided the EvalFile option points to the network file (if you put it in the same directory as the engine it should work, but in some cases you may need to specify the full path).
