Tony gasps.

Sam has become attuned to Tony over the past few months, and he knows before Tony even opens his eyes that it’s a bad one. His reaction is immediate. He wraps one arm around Tony’s shoulders and draws him closer until Tony is pressed against his chest. “Tony,” he says softly, speaking the man’s name right next to his ear, firmly, loudly. He has figured out a few tricks for bringing Tony out of one of his flashbacks; Tony needs weight, pressure, firmness of all kinds.

the sun was warm on their scales, little foamy crests lapping up over skin and tail alike. this island was their retreat, their sanctuary, where their gills could be warmed by the sun itself - no distortion of water, dry sand beneath their fingers, tanned skin and brown eyes closed as long as they lingered.

“we should be getting back,” anthony whispered, his gills fluttering from the crash of a particularly large wave, his skin sparkling almost as much as his reddened scales as he reached for the other’s hand.

“the sun has barely moved since we’ve arrived,” sam whispered, voice hoarse, and he rolled over so his chin could rest on the other’s shoulder.

“mmm, neither have i,” the prince retorted, smiling before intertwining their fingers, sliding back on the sand into their ocean home, “and i think there something more fun we could get up to with our day off.”

“I don’t want to admit that I wasn’t listening to any of it.” with SamTony

Tony is excited. Really, really excited. He just finished the new set of wings for Sam and lets just say it: they are awesome! Maybe even perfect. Okay the colours aren’t that great. Gold and red would look so much better, but he knows that Sam likes his red and silver combination. “Jarvis? Can you tell Sam that i need to see him?” Tony asks and still looks at the wings. They are even lighter than the ones before and maybe a bit bigger. But to be honest, the bigger the better right? Or something like that. “Mr. Wilson is requesting entrance.” Jarvis says a moment later and Tony flinches. Oh he is already…? Tony takes a deep breath and then nods. He can do this. Everything is going to be fine.“Then let him in.” Is all Tony says and he hears the door a moment later. Tony doesn’t turn around and tries to focus on the blueprints in front of him. He takes a deep breath again. Why is he so fucking nervous?“Hey Tony, Jarvis told me that you wanted to see me?” Sam says once he is close enough. Tony turns towards him and smiles a bit. It’s not really his press smile, but not a real one either. “Oh yeah. Actually i wanted to show you something.” Tony goes around his workshop table and with a snap of his fingers, Jarvis opens the file of Sams wings.

For a moment nobody says anything. Sam just looks at the blueprints infront of him. Tony can’t recognize his expression. Then Sam looks up at Tony and frowns. Uh oh.“What are those?” Sam tilts his head to one side and Tony gulps. Obviously Sam doesn’t like his present. Fuck. Why did he make them again? He should have asked Sam before starting this.“Your…uhm new wings?” It’s sounds more like a question and Tonys next breath sounds a bit wobbly. He doesn’t know why but lately he is always nervous around Sam. Whenever they are in the same room Tony can just look at Sam and he will only listen to his words.“What’s wrong with the old ones?” Sam asks again and Tony shrugs. Oh god. He is such an idiot. He just wanted to make Sam a present and he doesn’t even like it!?“I… i though i could…do better?” Tony stammers and now Sam smiles a bit at him. Wow now he even laughs at him. Tony can feel his heart break. He just wanted Sam attention for a few moments and thought….yeah what exactly did he thought?!“So you just made me some new wings, because you thought you could to better ones then the army?” Sam grins now and Tony pouts. Of course he can do better?! He is Tony Stark goddamnit. “Well obviously i can do better! But…” Tony stops mid-sentence. He can’t say that outloud. He can’t even think it. “But?” Sam asks again and now he looks really smug. Wow normally it’s Tony who can play with his words. Charm anyone. But not with Sam. He stutters always like an idiot, when he talks to Sam. So normally he doesn’t talk to him. At all.“Butiwantedtomakeyousmile.” Tony rushes his words out but Sam seems to understand them anyway. He smiles again but this time it’s really gentle and Tony falls all over in love again.“Why did you wanted to make me smile?” Sam is an asshole. Tony knows that. But this is just….mean! Yeah it is. Sam comes a bit closer now and Tony takes a step back. He can feel a blush coming up. He hasn’t blushed since he was 10!“Because.” Is all Tony can say. Sam really laughs at that and Tonys heart aches. Why is Sam so beautiful? Inside and out.“Interesting. So just for the record. You made me new wings, because you wanted to make me smile. And you don’t want anything in return?” Sam comes closer again and this time Tony doesn’t take a step back.“No….” Tony doesn’t want something back. He hates this question. People always think that he wants a repay for his presents. But that isn’t the case. Tony loves to make the people happy he likes. “Nothing?” Sam asks again. A kiss. Tonys first thought is a kiss. But obviously he can’t say that. Just the thought of it lets Tony faint. He would give everything just to feel it one time.“Nope.” Tony repeats and plops his p. Sam just looks at him for a second and Tony breaks the eye contact hastily. He doesn’t want Sam to see anything in his eyes.“Okay. Then tell me anything about the wings. What can they do?” Sam says and sits down on Tonys table. Tony exhales and then nods. He can do that. For the next fifty minutes Tony rambles about the new wings. He tells Sam everything about them. The new features, the new material. Everything. He doesn’t look at Sam as he does, but at his blueprints. At the end he goes over to one of the walls, where he keeps a door hidden. Without asking Jarvis to do so, the door opens and Sams wings are right there on a wall. Tony even polished them a few hours ago.“So uhm… now that you know everything about them, you can test them, if you…uhm like.” Tony says and looks back at Sam. “I don’t want to admit that I wasn’t listening to any of it.” Sam answers and then slowly comes over. Tony stomach almost turns. Sam didn’t even listen to him? Wow awkward.“Oh… That’s okay. I ramble a lot when i get excited and yeah.” Tony answers and looks down at his feet. This is so embarrassing. Now he really blushes a bit. Fuck it.“Well let’s just say i was a bit distracted. By all this beauty.” Sam tells him and this time Tony smiles a bit at that. Yeah he is really proud of the wings. Thank you very much. He spend almost two weeks just on them.“Yeah i know. They are beautiful.” Tony laughs and Sam touches the wings on the wall carefully. Tony is so glad that Sam really like them.“Oh but i wasn’t talking about the wings. Not that they aren’t beautiful.” Tony thinks he died. Because what? Sam still looks at him and this time his smile is nervous. Tony opens his mouth and then closes it. His brain is offline and his whole face burns.  “You…what?”“Well i thought you like me and since i like you, too maybe we could go out someday?” Yes Tony is dead. There is no other possibility. Because did Sam just asked him for a date?“P-pardon?”“Wow. I didn’t know it would take that to break you. Maybe if Loki or Doom would know that, they could finally rule the world.” Sam laughs and then comes over to Tony. Sam takes Tonys right hand in his.“Are you serious?” Ha. There a whole question. Tony is still alive. And holding Sams hand. Win win. “Of course i am. So maybe we could go fly together? Me with my new wings and you in the armor. What do you say?”“I would love, too.”And if they were holding hands the whole flight, nobody needed to know that.

when tony flew, it was to get from point “a” to point “b” - no detours, no acrobatics, just power and force and a need to push as fast as possible to go as far as possible in as little time as possible. he defied the odds, broke sound barriers, did what he’d done his whole life and made the impossible possible.

but sam - god, sam made flying look as natural as putting one foot in front of the other, sam twisted and turned and bobbed and weaved and took his namesake and ran with it. sam was beauty and grace and everything a human shouldn’t be, and tony fell in love with sam as he made it seem like humans should never be out of the sky.

they both could fly, but tony looked at sam and knew that no matter how many records he broke and how fast he soared himself, there was nothing more beautiful than sam when a brilliant sunset framed his wings.
