Summary: A few years have passed since the final battle with Thanos, and against all odds, everyone lived. The Avengers have grown as a team, encompassing their new friends and family. Steve and Tony are retired - or rather, semi-retired may be more appropriate as they both still function as part of the team, even if it's more behind the scenes. Everyone has moved forward, healed. Steve longs for more, however, and what he longs for is Tony. The problem is that he keeps hearing how much time Tony spends with others, two in particular, and this makes Steve jealous. So, he's going to settle this once and for all…by showing up at Tony's lakeside home and find out if there's room in Tony's life for him as more than a friend.

We sat quietly around the table, each poking morosely at our food with disinterest. The morning had been horrendous, and we were all licking our wounds, visibly affected by the absence of Tony from our gathering.

Hesitating, I looked back down the hall, torn between interrupting to offer him comfort and simply walking away. The latter would be easier, but…

“I could have taken the shot from that blaster. The suit would have been fine. I would have been fine.” He sniffed again, and I winced sympathetically. “Why would she do that?”

We’d all seen it, watching helplessly as Tony moved in front of a young girl as a bolt of blue light shot toward them, the blast too fast for him to raise his glowing palms in response. He was right – the suit would have absorbed the shot without much more the superficial damage.

But the girl – barely out of teenagehood – had shoved the red-and-gold hero out of the way, his surprise making him stumble as the bolt seared a hole straight through her chest. He caught her before she hit the ground, but it was already too late, and a roar of rage blew through our comms as he fired blast after blast at the offending enemy, tearing them apart without mercy or hesitation.

“I don’t know,” I admitted softly, eyes closing as I recoiled at the memory. “I… I guess she didn’t think you’d survive it.”

“Even if that were true,” he countered, irritation leaking back into his tone, “why would be my life be worth more than hers? Why would she sacrifice herself for me?”

I opened my mouth to reply just as hotly, but then closed it slowly once the reality of his words sunk in. “…You don’t think you’re worth saving… Do you?”

I was met with only silence, my heart hammering nervously in my chest, until he cleared his throat. “I… I don’t think my life is more important than anyone else’s. Nobody should die for me.”

A/N: This may become a series because I have so many other ideas for this gameshow idea, some are Taskmaster specific and other special editions. I definitely do want to finish this Taskmaster episode so watch for that on the horizon.

Tony suggests the idea of an Avengers Edition Taskmaster special and everybody seems pretty excited by the idea. Tony was too but hindsight is 20/20 and if it's making people laugh, that is okay.

Yesterday Tony thought this was a great idea, it was for charity after all and when he had seen Peter and Harley watching and laughing at the show it made sense. Today he doesn’t feel the same way because now it seems that Clint might be torturing him. It seemed logical to make Clint the taskmaster’s assistant, and Natasha the taskmaster, they were a great paring and were funny as they degraded each other and knew it wouldn’t hurt. 

In hindsight, Tony is sure he would have made different decisions, but not about the broadcast specifically. 

Tony opens the task, ripping off the iconic red wax seal which for this episode portrays the Avengers logo, there is a montage of the other contestants doing this also. Reading out the task Tony frowns “Find the most creative way to drown a tree.” The production is all set at the lakehouse, organised by Pepper, with a proper camera and lighting crews, they all know what is going on, but the Avengers don’t. 

The other reason Clint was made the Taskmaster’s assistant was that Clint was also extremely creative from his days within the circus, he was perfect, maybe too perfect for Tony’s taste. 

“You want me to drown a tree?” Tony asks confused looking around at his surrounding at the lake house, “Which tree?” There is no tree obviously out of place and Tony isn’t sure he has the muscular power of Steve to just pull one out of the ground, so there must be some other way,

It had taken a lot of contracts and money to make this happen but Pepper was excited by the idea and when reaching out to Alex Horne, the creator and the BBC they loved the idea. They had left full creativity to the Avengers and between Clint and Horne they set the tasks to complete.

But everything had gone to plan, they had volunteers for the camera work, editing, assistant, contestant and people saying they would love to participate next year if it became a yearly event. Taskmaster Avengers edition seemed to be a big hit even in just the first few minutes. 

The screen pauses and Natasha looks out to her contestants, looking regal on her large chair, similar to a throne, “Steve Rogers I am seriously hoping you didn’t decide to just pull a tree out of the ground,” Natasha lifts an eyebrow. Steve blushes slightly knowing what is to come. She shakes her head turning to Clint, “This certainly seems like an exciting task, they have to drown a tree, can’t be that hard right?” 

Clint’s smile is extremely mischievous as he looks the contestants up and down before returning back to Natasha, “Shouldn’t be.” Tony and Sam both groan before turning to the screen to watch more. 

On the screen, this time is an attempt by Sam and Steve sorted together for their similar use of strength, Sam immediately goes to grab 2 fishing rods and starts duck-taping them together to create a longer one, “when we want to drown things at the boat we first put them on fishing line to help submerge them,” Sam explains. This then quickly flicks to Steve doing a similar attempt instead this time trying a brick tied to a plant pot which, “I can just pull the tree out right?” Steve asks to complete his task and Clint just shrugs, which leaves a wide-mouth-shocked Tony at the studio audience recording. 

Both Captain America’s successfully drown a tree in a sense, Sam’s is more of a shrubbery attached to a fishing line and Steve’s is at the bottom of the lake in a plant pot. 

Thank Thor all the profits went to charity because if not Tony would be asking for a fee for pulling out a tree from the ground.  

“Steve you didn’t just think the brick would be enough?” Natasha asks once the clip is over, and Steve shrugs, “I thought the task said to be the most creative and the plant deserved a  home if it is going to spend its life in the bottom of a lake.” 

Tony and Bruce are next and they fight over what is the definition of a tree. Tony adds branches with leaves in the end into a toy submarine from inside the house and encounters many other plants inside. Bruce takes branches, leaves and roots, which he defines need to exist for a tree to survive, Steven, puts them with rocks inside of a mailbox which initially floats and the whole audience laughs at it. He recalculates his plan taking the tree features inside the house and putting them in the sink considering them drowned. 

Once the clip concludes the audience goes crazy over Natasha’s judgement, “I don’t think what either of you has done counts as trees,” the audience is happy to disagree, “but” Natasha lifts a figure and the audience goes quiet, “I do appreciate the creativity you both took into the task.” 

The one attempt that makes the whole audience laugh and the other contestants annoyed is Scott Lang’s.

As everyone watches in anticipation of Scott’s attempt they see the camera crew follow Scott into the house much similar to Bruce’s attempt, but this is much different. “It doesn’t need to be a real tree does it?” Scott asks as the taskmaster's assistant Clint does what he does best, be non-descriptive, “all the information is on the task,” and the smile on Scott’s face brightens. He draws a tree on a piece of paper talking about his daughter Cassie and how she loves to draw, once that is complete he puts the paper in the sink and drowns it in water from the tap. The audience applauded while in laughter, the contestants stunned. 

“Surely that is not allowed!” Tony argues, nearly shouting out his proposal. 

Clint smiles knowing what he has just done and is very pleased with himself for the good entertainment that he has caused, “the task was to be the most creative and I must say that was a creative interpretation.” “Plus paper is made from trees and so if yours is correct then mine much be, right Tony?” Scott argues back with his own scientific logic. 

But in the end of it all none of their opinions matter, because none of them are the Taskmaster. 

Natasha is, “Stop your whining I will be making my decision with no bias of interpretation.” Everybody shuts up with a few groans but nobody really wants to lose any more points “I have made my decision, Sam gets one point, while his knowledge of fishing was advanced, this was not a fishing challenge, Tony gets two because honestly he’s complained too much, Steve with three because it was impressive seeing you pull a tree from the ground. This leaves me, Banner, with four points and our winner of this challenge is Scott Lang, everybody!” Natasha announces to roars of applause. 

The audience is filled with laughter and clapping at the achievement. 

But Tony thinks that the one thing that matter is seeing Harley and Peter laugh harder than he has ever seen them, even in his own demise, which has made it worth it. 

And It’s only the first task.

A/N: So, I’m Team Cap when it comes to CW, but this time I’ll show the other side of the coin.

Inspired by the song “I want love” by Elton John and its video starring RDJ. Lyrics in Italics taken from the song.

I Want Love I want love, but it's impossible  A man like me, so irresponsible  A man like me is dead in places  Other men feel liberated.

He stares out of the window again. A habit he had since the day at the airport. 

You don’t know what breaks him more, that his best friend got injured because he fought alongside him, or that his other friends are on the run thanks to him.

That day he came back to the penthouse, with a broken suit on his body, and Captain America’s shield in his hands.

He didn’t say a word. Only dropped the shield to the ground and stepped over it.

You had to help him out of the suit and tend his wounds.  

You sigh and place the tray with food on the table. Tony doesn’t react. He keeps on staring out of the window.

“Mr. Stark, you should eat something,” you step toward the window to place your hand on his shoulder. “Whatever is going on in your mind, your body needs food. If you don’t eat, I’ll feed you.”

“You’re an awful personal assistant,” he grunts but gives you a cracked smile when you stand next to him. “Something is coming, I can feel it in my bones.”

“Something or someone?” You question. “Good or evil?”

“Huh?” He dips his head to glance at you. “What do you mean with good or evil?”

“Well, can I buy a new car, or should I wait a little longer? I don’t want to lose another car to an invasion,” you smirk. “You remember the car your friends used to throw at that robot, right?”

“It was Thor, not me.” Tony points out. “Uh-and I offered redemption. You got the job, and a nice office.”

“Yeah, as you destroyed my office and apartment during Loki’s invasion,” you retort, wrinkling your nose.

“We’ve been through a lot together,” he states. “Since that first battle in New York City.”

“I remember the day vividly,” you nod slowly. “You ended up on my desk because one of the aliens threw you through the window of my building. You crashed my desk, taking me with you to protect me when the alien followed you inside the building.”

 “You wiggled out of my hold to get the fire extinguisher.” Tony flashes you a smile. “I thought, damn. That woman just attacked an alien using a fire extinguisher.”

“I distracted it long enough for your friend to kill it.” You grin. “It looked as surprised as you did.”

Tony frowns. The friend you are talking about is one of the people he forced to run. Steve Rogers. His friend. Captain America. A fallen hero thanks to Tony.

“Sorry. I know you don’t like talking about them,” you hastily say. It’s no secret Tony tries not to think about the friends he lost because he was too stubborn to admit he was in the wrong. 

“He made his decision, and I made mine,” he turns around to walk toward his desk. “Maybe we both made mistakes. But his friend killed my parents.”

“The winter soldier killed your parents,” you correct. “Sergeant Barnes was brainwashed and enslaved at that time. That’s what your friend tried to make you see.”

“You too?” Tony turns around to look at you. He shakes his head and drops his gaze. “You all think I drove the Avengers apart. I can see it in their eyes every day.”

“Who?”

“Every single person I met since Steve and the others are on the run. Not even Fury stayed in touch since Steve is gone,” Tony bitterly admits. “I’m the bad guy in this story.”

“Mr. Stark, you need to eat something,” you softly say. “Sit down and stop overthinking things. Captain Rogers is a grown man and a super-soldier, Agent Romanoff was trained to survive, Ms. Maximoff is so powerful even Gods will learn what fear means in her presence, and Mr. Wilson proved more than once that he can keep up with all of them.”

“Vision believes I don’t know that he sneaks out to meet up with Wanda. And Rhodes, he poorly hides that he keeps tabs on Steve and the others.” He plops down on his chair and hides his face in the palms of his hands.

“They used to be friends,” you gently run your fingers through Tony’s hair. “You don’t stop being friends only because someone tells you so. Even if it’s the government.”

“I just…” He closes his eyes and sighs deeply. 

How can he tell one of his employees how he feels since that day?

Steve Rogers, his friend, rammed his shield into his suit and Tony still doesn’t know if Steve only tried to stop him or wanted to kill him. 

Now the man he trusted with his life is on the run with his friend. The man killing Tony’s parents. It feels surreal to Tony that Captain America is wanted, and a man like him is still the hero to people.

“I just want things to be…”

“Boss, stop torturing yourself. What’s done is done,” you try to stop Tony from falling into depression again, or that the nightmares return. You’re not against holding Tony at night to calm him, but it’s not in your job description.

“Pepper left me because of my problems.” Tony continues. He sighs again. “Everyone just leaves me. Maybe they believe Steve would’ve been the better choice. They always saw the leader in him, not me. I was only the guy giving all the money to buy the shiny things they need.”

“We all just want to be loved, Mr. Stark,” you speak softly to your boss. “And we all get left once or twice in life. People get their hearts broken all the time. What matters is that we don’t shut people out.”

“I don’t think I can love again. I’m damaged goods. Who would want to love me? I got an arc reactor keeping me alive. I have flaws and issues. My mind is my worst enemy. Genius and crazy inventor at the same time.” 

You’re silent for a moment, but your fingers still run through his hair.

“Tony, you need to learn how to be loved. If you cannot open your heart to people again without fearing they’ll leave you, you’re going to end up alone, surrounded by twenty cats.”

Tony looks at the plate on his desk, filled with all the things he likes. His stomach is empty, but no food in the world can fill the emptiness inside of him. He feels hollow and unsure of how to proceed in the future.

You feel his hesitation, and move your hands to his shoulders, gently kneading the knots out. He relaxes under your touch. “One step after another, Mr. Stark. Everything is going to be better soon.”

“I want things to be simple again. Maybe it wasn’t too bad having meaningless encounters with women and allies. No feelings attached. A single warrior in the sheets and battle.”

“Love and relationships to your conditions won’t work out,” you remind him and grip his shoulders a little tighter. “You know that. If you want people to trust and love you; you must do the first step sometimes.”

“I trust you,” he leans in your touch, allowing you to move your hands to his arms. “You’re the only one left. The only one not asking me what happened between Cap and me.”

“There are always two sides of one coin. Right? No side is right, no side is in the wrong. Two opinions. Two opponents. No winner in the end.”

“I don’t want to end up with twenty cats.”

You chuckle. “I thought you like dogs more.”

“You know what I meant,” he whispers. “What if no one will ever be worthy of my trust again? What if everyone only ever leaves me in the end?”

“You should go home, Y/N,” Tony watches you run your hand over his chest. He had another fallout. In other words, nightmares about his parents’ death, and the fight between him and Steve. “You’ve got a life.”

“I got an apartment at the tower,” you tut. “It’s like one elevator ride away.” He relaxes under your touch. “Once in a while, you should let someone take care of you.”

“Hmm…” He turns his head to look at you. “I still remember how you yelled at me when Thor threw the car at Ultron.”

“I was pissed.”

“You were so angry, yet beautiful. In a scary way.” Tony flashes you a smile.

“I’m scary?”

“That’s all you heard?” He furrows his brows. “I said you are beautiful.”

“And you still owe me that car. It was a classic.”

“It was a Volvo.”

“Hey, I loved that car,” you argue. “It was reliable, and I loved Betsy.”

“You named her?”

“You name all of your AIs.”

“Touché,” he chuckles. “Still, it was a wreck. The new one I got you is much more reliable and prettier.”

“Maybe,” you lie next to Tony to stare up at the ceiling. “How bad will it be?”

“What do you mean?” He asks, watching you.

“Your hunch about something or someone coming. Do you think it’s going to be worse than Loki’s invasion?”

“Worse enough I got the phone Steve sent to me in my pocket all the time. I don’t know if he will answer, but I want to be prepared.”

You roll to your side to rest your head on his chest. Tony lets you. You are no stranger to finding hope and solace in each other. Not in a physical way, but in an emotional way.

“Well, you only know if you call him.” You close your eyes when Tony wraps his arms around you. 

While you cling to each other, another vision forces its way into your mind. This time it’s even worse.

Tears spill from your eyes when you must watch Tony fall, surrounded by his friends and allies.

“Worse…” you whisper as Tony drifts into sleep. “So much worse, Tony…”
