RF1: Year 1 - Spring 7

It's Raguna's first official Holiday in Kardia and he didn't save up enough money for a Seed Maker (Mist will be scolding him for this for literally years to come).

But more importantly, everyone's schedules changes up on Holidays and an entirely new world of dialogue opens up. Needless to say, today was a hard one to pick a quote for.

In the end, I had to go with another nostalgic moment: my favourite Tori quote.

When I think of Tori, I think of this line of hers on the beach:

"I like the sea... Sometimes I come here... to look at the ocean... Sometimes... I hope to see a prince riding a dolphin... come to sweep me away..."

She's a dreamer who probably spends way too much time reading fantasy novels but I love her for it. But I think what resonated with me most with this quote is the fact that even fantasy characters dream of unrealistic or unheard-of things. I mean, do dolphins really exist in Rune Factory? We fish "real" fish like sardines and salmon, so maybe dolphins do exist. We also hear owls hooting late at night, but see no sign of them actually existing. The only creatures we get to directly interact with are monsters. I'd put fish on that list if they'd let Raguna keep a fish tank! (For my cute little Lobstah - a lobster I ended up getting way too attached to when I fished it up later in my run.).

But enough animal debate, this post is about Tori.

Wouldn't it be cute if Tori's proposal included dolphins instead of milk and baths? And if dolphins don't exist, I'd love to see what Raguna thinks one looks like! Maybe it's something we'll see if we ever get RF1S... Another Episode content, perhaps?

hi so going through rune factory 5 has made me think a lot about things past games had that are probably never going to be seen again which is sad bc there were a lot of fun features that got scrapped throughout the series so here is a lengthy list of things that only ever showed up in 1 to a few rf games that i miss and i think people would be interested in knowing about:

unique proposal items & quests (1 & 2). added a little personal touch to pursuing each character even if some of the items could be tricky to obtain, like the lover snapper for Mei requiring multiplayer trading. it was still cute though :( stuff like figuring out Felicity’s mystery illness in 1 as her proposal quest, or getting Rosalind a flower bouquet inspired by her favourite story in 2 by seeking her brother’s assistance to use as her proposal item...

unique friendship methods (1 thru frontier). while the gift-giving system was still in effect, there were some characters who would gain friendship in other ways (whether these were just bonuses or did more for you than gift-giving depended on the character). like Bianca in 1 & frontier who was so rich that gifts did Nothing for her, and you just had to talk to her daily. or Alicia in 2 who was more interested in you using her fortune-telling service than getting gifts from you. Rosetta gained bonus LP if you were there when she picked up shipments at 5PM in Frontier, Selphy & Tori gained LP from reading books, etc. etc.

constellations (frontier). this system was sooo cute basically if you talked to Cinnamon after befriending people to a certain extent she’d tell you about constellations you could view; seeing them unlocked a little event w the bachelorette they were related to (ex. a treasure hunt for Bianca’s) & some ingame lore on the constellation from Cinnamon. it would also unlock a book in....

the library (1 & frontier). i could be remembering wrong but i think 2’s was solely for learning spells so i’m not counting it. anyways the libraries were FUN.... frontier’s had more to it but it was a cute concept in 1 too, they had books that covered topics like tutorials to legends to the individual constellations you could get as you unlocked them (frontier)...... it was a really cute feature and good for stuffing in extra tidbits, lore, and small details

jumping & double jumping (oceans). my god i miss jumping. it wasn’t ever necessary and often caused more problems than anything bc of getting Aden stuck but it’s fun. and that’s what matters.

haggling (oceans). there wasn’t a shipping box in that game because you were on an island without easy produce transport so instead you had to sell your wares to shops and actually haggle for better prices. sometimes it would work. sometimes they wouldn’t budge. sometimes they would get pissed off at you and lower their buying price. it was fun :-)

rival marriages (2). we are never seeing this Ever again in either rf Or story of seasons because farming sim fans don’t know how to deal with other people potentially being into their love interest but i hate being the only person who ever gets married in these games and it would be nice if they brought it back because it makes it feel a little less like everything revolves just around the player. also it came with the funniest feature of all time in rf2 which was stealing somebody’s bride at the altar. i want that back so bad. they are never going to top that.

multiplayer (3). they probably removed this because it was incredibly easy to take advantage of and completely destroyed any difficulty you might face in the main story but in 3 there was a bonus dungeon known as the sharance maze which had solo & multiplayer options. in the multiplayer version (which you could still play by yourself lol) time didn’t pass and you suffered 0 repercussions for fainting. very exploitable in a good way. also you could play as just about any character in the cast and they all had their strengths and weaknesses -- Sofia gained HP instead of losing it from failed dishes, Sakuya had increased chances of finding treasure chests, Daria had like 2x speed, Marian had increased HP drain (+ boosted HP gain from green veggies and immediate KO from tomatoes), Pia had her mermaid form accessible, etc. etc.

the electric guitar (oceans). “the fucking what now” you may ask. well you see oceans had some VERY fun joke weapons including an electric guitar axe that actually played guitar riffs when you swung it, an entire flag as a longsword, & a pair of firecrackers as dual blades. they were great and i think rf5 should’ve brought them back

house expansion creative freedom (frontier). i think pictures can do better than an explanation so here’s the gallery link for frontier upgrades, you could pick different designs for your kitchen / forge / apothecary

the boat (frontier). in frontier there was a large lake with little islands scattered about it and you could take a gondola and paddle yourself out to the islands. there was also a festival based in it called the boat race in summer!

In Rune Factory 1, I loved how Tori had a little ritual to be fulfilled in order to marry her. I wish more marriage candidates had something similar.

Tori Colour Inspiration

I think I tried out almost every colour of the rainbow with Tori. I just couldn't decide which one resonated with her the most.

At first, I was going to give her a teal green to match the book she is always carrying around, but as I started assigning colours to the caves, a lot of them were somewhere around the green I was thinking of. Tori is probably the least likely villager to go into a cave, too, so I really didn't want to run the risk of her being mixed up with a cave in my blanket!

Her yellow hair and blue eyes were colours that I associated more with other characters like Rosetta for yellow, Mist, Bianca, and even Tabatha for blue.

All that was left was her dress. Which, after giving it some more thought, a princess pink suited her and her dreams of becoming a princess perfectly.

Best Bachelor from Each of My 10 Favorite BokuMono Games

I couldn’t really think of anything to review today. I was thinking of a really overly-excited review of the most recent episode of 18if (it’s great and you should watch it), but... nah. I’ll just talk about that episode at length when I write a review of the whole series at the end of the season.

So, what the hell. I like talking about BokuMono games. Let’s do another list of BokuMono games.

Please note that I have a type, so there might be a bit of redundancy in this list.

1. Animal Parade: Wizard

He’s a popular favorite, and there’s a reason for that: he likes coffee.

He’s also really quiet, smart, is interested in astrology, and’ll just sit at his empty table like a loser until you get him his crystal ball back. Plus he has heterochromia and I like heterochromia. 

If there’s anything negative to say about his guy, it’s that you have to wait for him to stop talking about the plot (even long after the plot is finished) before you can get to the bits of his dialogue anyone actually cares about.

But aside from that, he’s just an overall cool dude, and the sort of character I could see myself being friends with in real life.

2. Sunshine Islands: Will

I don’t typically like blonds, either in real life or in video games, nor do I have any particular feeling one way or the other about the prince type, but Will’s introduction made me laugh, and when a marriage candidate makes me laugh I always marry them.

3. Island of Happiness: Shea

Did you know that Shea is a Good Boy? Because Shea is a Good Boy. I like that he looks like he’s gonna be the kuudere or tsundere type, when he’s actually pretty friendly right from the start (just like pretty much everyone else except Vaughn). He also has tattoos (at least, I assume they’re tattoos). That’s pretty cool.

4. Hero of Leaf  Valley: Louis

This game doesn’t actually have bachelors since there’s no girl version, but Louis is an attractive dude and if I could’ve gone for him I probably would’ve.

5. Harvest Moon DS Cute: Skye

As I already mentioned, this guy is my favorite bachelor in the series. He’s a dork. He thinks he’s all suave, but I heard the plans he was mumbling under his breath. Nerd.

6. Back to Nature: Kai

This one does has a girl version, even though it ends if you get married. I actually married Cliff in that one because my sister liked him, and that was a mistake. I’m sorry if you like Cliff, but I hate Cliff. I wanted to go with Kai, but I didn’t and it’s her fault, and even though he’s one of my favorites I’ve never married him in any of the games he’s in. I need to get around to that.

7. Harvest Moon 64: Jeff

This is another game without a girl version, but if there was, Jeff would be my first, last, and only choice. He’s great. I hate what they did to him in Back to Nature and Friends of Mineral Town.

8. More Friends of Mineral Town: Gray

Gray is often mistakenly placed in the same category as Vaughn, but while that might be true for HM64, it’s definitely not true here. Gray may not be your instant bestie, but he’s still never rude or dismissive of you the way Vaughn is. I like that most of his events involve him refusing to give up meeting the high expectations his grandfather has for him. It’s very shonen hero-y.

9. Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns: Ludus

He’s the ridiculously handsome guy. That’s really it. His personality is fine, and though Yuzuki is actually more interesting, Ludus’ ridiculous handsomeness overpowers any other good traits the other bachelors may or may not have.

10. Rune Factory: Raguna

“But he’s the main character!” Yeah, I know, but I don’t even really know who in town would even be a bachelor? I guess Tori’s brother, and that dude who has a crush on Melody, and I don’t even care enough about them to remember their names. I like Cecilia’s dad, but they’d never let us date a single parent. Rags is a Good Boy. He needs a haircut, though.

So that’s pretty much it for bachelors. I'll do the bachelorettes next week.
