Plant of the Day
Wednesday 28 September 2022
For about six months of the year the wildflower Potentilla erecta (tormentil) can be found flowering. This creeping perennial has thin wiry stems and the flowers appear through wild grasslands. Historically the roots of the plant were harvested for the leather Industry due to the high levels of tannins.

1st May 2023-Bentley Wood
Pictures taken today in this set are of: 1. Primroses. 2. Spurge. 3. Charming wood anemone. 4 and 5. Stunning scenes of vibrant swathes of bluebells on the forest floor as we have seen before at this another of our key butterfly sites visited for the first time in 2023 today. 6. A beautiful Green Tiger beetle, it’s the fourth year running we’ve seen one now and third consecutive year at Bentley Wood I always feel so fortunate to see this wondrous and exotic looking insect hop across paths. An epic and immersive moment. 7. Some lovely eyelash fungus which I wasn’t expecting to see today and never had here before, one of a few great little things of nature I enjoyed today. 8. A crane fly I believe a cone horn cranefly I was amazed to see on the path towards the end of the walk, I found it so colourful and fascinating. As I’ve got more interested in insects beyond butterflies, moths, dragon/damselflies the past few years I’ve noticed just how rich in insect life Bentley Wood is which is so good. 9 and 10. Great green views in fine sunshine.
Oil beetle and snipe fly as I had seen here before were also good to see on the walk, as were a spider, bee flies, tadpoles and pond skater on the pond, pretty bugle, ground ivy, tormentil, greater stitchwort, garlic mustard and cuckooflower. It was a delight to hear a Cuckoo’s enchanting call reverberating through the woods I have had an amazing bank holiday weekend for these birds I love. Hearing the wholesome drumming of another of my favourites Great Spotted Woodpecker and Pheasant as well as seeing Blue Tit and Brimstone stood out too.

Note
You made me Google what Tormentil is and that made me learn the finnish word for it (Rätvänä) (which I love) so thank you for that
yeah, I discovered it accidentally while scouring through the medicine article on the warriors wiki.
it's a flower that supposedly heals poison and it had such a nice feeling to the name so I decided it'd be the perfect name for my morally dubious villain who thinks she's getting rid of the poison of the cats who banished skyclan. I'm proud of that name and the story I gave her and her mate starlingblaze (and their kit, seedpelt the second, who is also the parent of doestar)

You are magnificent and Your grace protects me in the face of evil. Mighty Thor, wise, compassionate Friend of humanity, look upon us and wield Your hammer for our protection. Gracious Sif, You Whose gentle touch causes the grain to grow, please nourish us, restore us, and grant us the fortitude to walk in alignment with the Holy Powers always. Through Your blessings, may we grow strong in faith. through Your blessings may we grow strong in devotion. Through Your blessings, may we always resist impiety, may we be nourished as the grain is nourished under Your caring hands. In times of peril, come to our aid, I pray. In times of desperation, I place myself under Your care.nHail Thor, Son of Odin. Hail Sif, His Gracious Bride.
To Thor
Son of Strength. I ask you to grant me that strength. That I may lift the weight of the day. Defender of Midgard. Grant me your skill in battle. That I may protect my family, my land and my kin. Bringer of Rain and Thunder. Grant me the ability to wash the weariness and pain of my daily work. That I may strike my next task like the blows from Mjolnir.  Son of Odin, Hammer Wielder, Giant Killer and Guardian of Man. I ask that you make me like the sturdy oak. That I do not break from the blows of misfortune. That I may not be crushed by the powerful. That I may be resilient and mighty like your own arm. That I may be brave to face the evil of this world. Hail Thor!

AHHHHH YOUR FANCLANS ARE SO COOL!
some questions - do they still have the leader and deputy role? are these any different to canon lead & dep (in regards to 9 lives or duties or naming systems)?
I love the idea of the clans being in Ireland!! I feel like that would create a really unique setting!
Are there any celebrations or holidays for the clans? Like a solstice kinda thing or a whole-clan hunting excursion? Traditional songs or art styles?
the closest thing to leader or deputy are the ambassador and sage. the ambassador speaks at gatherings and is the voice of the clan! they usually have a kind of virtue name that has to do with their voice or manner of speaking (ex: tormentil of the grizzled vow for a cat with a raspy voice known to speak confidently). the sage is the spiritual leader of the clan. i’m still debating on names and if they will get the star suffix. i haven’t done anything w 9 lives but considering that being a thing for elders who reach a certain age as a reward for their hard work. they can choose to accept or turn it down and most would turn it down.
as for festivals i intend to go for celestial celtic ones (solstice and equinox). each would have a gathering of the clans and have different celebrations. for example the summer solstice, or lughnasa in celtic tradition, would include a sort of olympics type festival where cats can compete. samhain (fall equinox) would probably include some kind of arts game or competition. maybe a hunting competition so they can offer their fresh kill to the dead/deities? i love the whole equinox as the day where spirits come alive idea that’s present across many cultures.

14/10/23-Denny Wood in the New Forest
Photos taken in this set are of: 1, 2 and 6. Beautiful views on a wonderful work immersed in nature in the rich October sunshine. 3. A smashing group of mushrooms, milkcap I believe. 4 and 8. A charismatic and bright Red Admiral one of multiple I enjoyed seeing on the walk, it was great to see this massively numerous species this year fly onto a tree trunk not something I'd often seen before. 5. A beautiful flower I believe purple toadflax. 7. Alongside another next to it my first panthercap of the year, an alluring mushroom. 9. A view including holly. 10. A sweet young New Forest Pony in a delightful group of them seen.
Other highlights on this great walk were my first Redwing of the autumn always en exciting moment, Marsh Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Robin, Blackbird, Chaffinch and Goldfinch enjoyed a lot again today and a nice Southern Hawker seen well. I enjoyed hearing the distant bark of a deer stag, I believe Fallow Deer. Daisy, tormentil, hawksbeard/hawksbit, hawthorn berries and emerald cased chestnuts glowing in the sunshine a key image of this vibrant time of year were other great plants/fruit to see. Common puffball and possibly mower's mushroom were other good ones seen.

On 11th August 1892 poet Christopher Murray Grieve was born in Langholm.
C M Grieve, or Hugh MacDiarmid to you and I lived above Langholm library, is it any wonder he would grow up with a love of words with access to any book that he wanted.This encouraged an interest in reading and in language that would remain with him throughout his life. MacDiarmid trained to be a teacher but decided not to pursue this and spent years in local journalism in Scotland and Wales before joining the the Royal Army Medical Corps on the outbreak of the First World War, surviving the war he returned to journalism in Montrose, he became Chief Reporter of the local paper was appointed Justice of the peace and served on the council.
Whereas having an admiration for poets like Burns and Hogg he felt that poetry of the era should reflect the times and not the over sentiment of past times. During his time in Montrose he started compiling and publishing poems, at the same time writing his own, in 1926 he published what was to become his most famous poem, A Drunk Man looks at a Thistle. He became involved in politics, was a founder member of the SNP before being expelled and joining the communist party at a time when communism was viewed very suspiciously .
MacDiarmid delighted in controversy and his autobiography Lucky Poet - published in 1943 - offended the officials of Langholm, after a time living in the remote Shetland island of Whalsay he moved to a cottage (with little in the way of comfort) near Biggar. Although never having made much of a living through his work he was much admired and his political beliefs saw him traveling to the old USSR and China. For a man not keen on sentimentality he had a deep felt love for Scotland and wasn’t shy in showing where he belonged by wearing the kilt often. There is a memorial cairn and installation to MacDiarmid just north of Langholm. It takes the form of a giant book and was designed by sculptor Jake Harvey. His poem The Little White Rose, is etched in stone on the wall of The Holyrood Parliament, along with many other Scottish verse, as you walk down The Canongate.
This is a wee bit of a poem by MacDiarmid that I like......
“Scotland small? Our multiform, our infinite Scotland small?
Only as a patch of hillside may be a cliché corner
To a fool who cries ‘Nothing but heather!’ where in September another
Sitting there and resting and gazing around
Sees not only the heather but blaeberries
With bright green leaves and leaves already turned scarlet,
Hiding ripe , ; and amongst the sage-green leaves
Of the bog-myrtle the golden flowers of the tormentil shining;
And on the small bare places, where the little Blackface sheep
Found grazing, milkworts blue as summer skies;
And down in neglected peat-hags, not worked
Within living memory, sphagnum moss in pastel shades
Of yellow, green, and pink; sundew and butterwort
Waiting with wide-open sticky leaves for their tiny winged prey;
And nodding harebells vying in their colour
With the blue butterflies that poise themselves delicately upon them;
And stunted rowans with harsh dry leaves of glorious colour.
‘Nothing but heather!’ ̶ How marvellously descriptive! And incomplete!”
Hugh MacDiarmid, excerpt from ‘Dìreadh I’, from Complete Poems, Vol. II
