TW : mentions of death from tornadoes, crying, tornadoes, angst, flashbacks, no mentions of “Y/N”, pet names (sweetheart, baby, sweet girl), not such an asshole Scott.

A/N : hi everyone, this is my first ? twisters fic, and I’m open to requests of this fandom as well. fyi this has a lengthy character count on it, going about 6.8k.

Sigh.

It was devastating. The sight of the town you grew up was now in piles of rubble, you could hear the sob of children crying, parents looking for pets and children, it really didn’t help the tears rolling down your face at that moment. You took the job gradually, and you knew this was going to happen. that’s when it hit you, someone was stuck under a board, of some wood, you didn’t care, all that matter was trying to get them out from underneath it, out of this now formed hellhole.

gentle sobs came from underneath the mass of wood on the woman, elderly, it made your heart break. she knew you, and you knew her.

YEARS PRIOR — TODDLER YEARS

running around the calming grass, no shoes on, dogs barking, other children playing in their yards, such a perfect day in the state of Oklahoma. You seen the woman who everyone called the “neighborhood grandma.” she was everyone’s grandma from your perspective. feet ran across the grass and up onto her porch, she was crocheting a small blanket. “Hi grandma!” your voice rung out to snap her out of her focus on the blanket, and a pair of familiar eyes met yours, and smile appeared on her face. “oh my sweetheart, how are you darling?” she would ask, getting up slowly, to walk inside of her house, the door open since it felt amazing outside, you’d never see a day like that again. “i’m good! mommy told me to go play outside since there’s no weather around, and since i saw you, I wanted to say hi!” you explained, the smile that you had grew even wider.

“oh darling,” she whispered, keeping that same smile on her face, she enjoyed your company. “you’ll never see a day like this, again.”

you snapped out of your trance. you kept thinking about what she said,

“you’ll never see a day like this, again.” And you believe it. The town didn’t even look like the town anymore. You lifted the board up with all your strength, and the crying stopped, and that’s when your heart dropped. a quiet “grandma..?” came tumbling out your mouth. The tears becoming more heavier, sobs becoming visible, EMS pulling up to scene, and you sat there, with your hands on her head, and face, the woman no longer breathing. oh man, you didn’t want to let her go.

YEARS PRIOR — TODDLER YEARS

you remember her reading a book to you during the evening that night, your mom giving you a warm bath, and hair braided. earlier that day, you saw on the news that a devastating EF3 tornado had struck a small town in the state, hours away. curiosity had took over the small mind of yours, tempting you to ask grandma what a “tornado” was. Your teacher told you that you would be going over the safety since you live in a state that’s in an alley called “Tornado Alley”. Yet you couldn’t wait, impatient.

“grandma?” you asked, interrupting her. “yes sweetheart?” she looked up from the book, meeting your questioning eyes. “what’s a tornado?” you asked, making eye contact with her. “oh sweetheart, let me tell you, a tornado is something you never want to mess around with..” she trailed off, her voice becoming a little heavy.

“when I was a little older than you, I went through my first tornado, and I lost my dad due to it. I never expressed much feeling over it, but it’s still upsetting sometimes to hear about tornadoes.” she said, still going on, “yet, to answer your question, a tornado is a violently rotating column of air touching the ground, usually attached to the base of a thunderstorm. Tornadoes are natures most violent storms. Spawned from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in seconds.” she said, it was alot for you to take in, yet you understand what she meant, some how, and it interested you.

you felt a pair of hands on your shoulders, snapping out of your mind again. It was Javi, staring at you with a worried face. You knew this would happen, just never when. “we got to go.” He murmured to you and then walking off. You didn’t want too, but it was for the better. One more hug, you thought. One more hug.

the ride back to the motel was silent. very silent. sitting in the front seat of the white truck with your companion, Scott, you didn’t hear him smacking his minty gum, but you knew he was still chewing some. the vibe was horrible. you stayed silent the whole entire ride. “you okay?” Scott asked, looking at you. oh you wanted to cry, scream, and who knows what. a quiet “no” came out, eyes bloodshot from crying. you wanted to hurl your phone out the damn window, and just cry, but no. did she not make it to her basement in time? what went wrong? where did you go wrong?

“where did i go wrong?” you question, the familiar tears falling down your face again, oh man, just not wanting to cry betrayed you. “what do you mean? you didn’t do anything wrong.” Scott said, voice sounding a little worried. “I feel like I went wrong somewhere Scott, somewhere- just— where did-” oh. now you remember.

“oh sweetheart, let me tell you, a tornado is something you never want to mess around with..” she trailed off, her voice becoming a little heavy.

now you understood where you went wrong. staying silent was difficult, you couldn’t, but you did. “I think I finally understand where I went wrong.”

that was a very long conversation you had between your boyfriend. It proceeded into your shared motel room, you didn’t want to talk anymore after what happened in that town, but it’s not good to bottle up those feelings. Yet there was only one thing that could make you feel better, and it was him.

“let me tell you something,” he started out, before letting out a sigh. “it’s something that’s going to be common after all of these tornadoes we get sweet girl,” you could tell he wasn’t finished. you sat down on the bed, not feeling well at all. Scott crouched down infront of you resting his hands on your thighs. His blue eyes met yours, and you just stayed quiet. “I know it’s going to be hard with everything, and you have every right to feel the way you feel.” The words tumbled out his mouth, like he’s been through this before, and to be honest, it really wouldn’t surprise you if he did.

“There’s gonna be times where you don’t want to look at a tornado ever again, but baby, lemme tell you, I’ve been through the same situation you have, and it’s not a good time. You feel like and it’s- really, you just don’t feel good. But don’t let that stop you from doing what you really want to achieve.” He said and you nodded. You loved him, a lot, and he knew that too.

“she’s not in anymore pain now. you’re okay and she’s okay.” .. “I love you.” he said before pressing a soft kiss against your lips. “… I love you too.”

- Dallas didn't take too well from living in a place with few tornados a year to the right dab center of tornado alley and was always found with Mrs Curtis...

QUICK PSA. Listen, I know we all love to joke around on here and share our lovely ships.

But if you’re in the states that are being hit severely right now with tornado outbreaks, flash flooding, & other severe storms currently (like me), PLEASE stay safe and know your emergency procedures. Check on your friends and family. Be prepared. Candles, flashlights, leashes/crates for animals, WATER, batteries, make sure your phones are charged, etc. if you need to evacuate please wear closed toe shoes, long sleeves and pants, write your personal information on your arm with a sharpie. Know where your emergency shelters are.

Night tornadoes are the deadliest. You can’t see them. So please have different ways of getting warnings. If there is a tornado in your area, stay away from windows. Go to the basement or storm cellar. If you have neither of those, go to a hallway, bathroom or closet. If you’re in an apartment building NOT on the first floor, get to the first floor. Your neighbors should be helpful and let you in. If not, you can either kick down their door, go to a stairwell or breezeway, or go back to your apartment and seek shelter in the bathroom. Never ever try to out run or out drive a tornado. You will not survive.
