Ancient Monumental Marble Map of Rome on Display After 100 Years

A marble map of ancient Rome, that hasn't been put on public view for almost 100 years, is getting its very own museum within sight of the Colosseum.

The Museum of the Forma Urbis, enclosed within a new archaeological park on one of Rome's famous seven hills opens on Friday -- the latest offering from a city that is eager to broaden its attraction for growing hordes of tourists, according to Reuters.

"This is a beautiful day. We are opening an archaeological park in an extraordinary part of the city and a new museum showcasing a masterpiece which has not been visible for about a century," said Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

"We want a city where the museums and the streets are linked, and where people, while walking around, can fully appreciate and enjoy the beauty, but also better understand how our city has been transformed."

The Forma Urbis was a monumental, highly detailed marble map of ancient Rome carved during the reign of the Emperor Septimius Severus between 203 and 211 AD, engraved onto 150 separate slabs and measuring 18 by 13 metres (60 by 43 feet).

It was displayed on a wall in the ancient city, but over the centuries it gradually disintegrated, with locals using some slabs for new buildings.

During excavations in 1562, fragments were recovered and scholars estimate around 10% of the whole has survived, including sections showing the Colosseum and Circus Maximus, as well as floor plans of baths, temples and private houses.

The huge carving has proved a valuable resource for understanding the layout of ancient Rome, but all the remaining pieces have not been shown together since 1924.

In its new, innovative setting, the fragments have been laid out on a reproduction of a famous map of Rome created in the 18th century by the surveyor Giovanni Battista Nolli, who is credited with making the first accurate street plan of Rome.

The marble chunks lie on top of the Nolli map, showing their relation to the developing Renaissance city.

Outside the museum, in the open-air park on the side of the Caelian Hill, archaeologists have out laid out walkways lined with ancient Roman grave markers and marble columns found in excavations around the city in recent decades.

"The Caelian Hill, one of the seven hills of ancient Rome, has remained in the shadows, unknown and inaccessible for a very long time. Today, we are finally giving it back to the city," said Claudio Parisi Presicce, who oversees Rome's cultural heritage.

"The hill has a special importance because it is what unites the monumental area of the Imperial Forums, the Roman forum, the Colosseum and the area of the Appia Antica," he said.

The 5-million-euro ($5.5 million) project is part of a broader refurbishment of Rome, which has seen a tourism boom since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to be submerged by visitors in the 2025 Roman Catholic Holy Year.

Rob cried all day. The moment the verdict had been read, the moment the sentence was announced, and the moment his beautiful wife had been marched out of sight. Alex had stayed emotionless but he had caught her eye when the punishment – free use service – had been read out. He could see the fear hiding in her eyes but moments later she was gone. Other articles argued the service should be expanded further. He read further to absorb details of the rules. Formally the service only included vaginal sex. Many articles and comments claimed that oral and anal were commonplace. The details of the electrical prods that were used to maintain obedience. The medical risks: frequency of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

Rob browsed further and found a website called Free Use Tourism. The banner image was a picture of a naked woman surrounded by men, tears in her eyes and one of the electrical rods in her mouth. The tagline read: a forum for sharing free use service experiences and recommendations. Rob knew he should leave the site, but he couldn't. The forum sections made him feel sick: field reports & experiences, upcoming free use girls, fantasy free use, free use rule breaking and more. Rob clicked into upcoming free use girls. Dozens of threads appeared, each with a photo of a woman and discussion of a court case or potential service. He scrolled down, taking in the vile comments under the photos about travelling to visit and rape these women. Then he stopped dead: his wife Alex smiling out of the screen. The photo was from a TV interview she had done only a few weeks ago. There were more comments under her than any woman he'd yet seen. Rob managed to read only one: "I hate this bitch, been on my rape wishlist for a while". Rob shakily closed the website and slammed his laptop shut. He put on a film and sat in numb silence until he passed out on the sofa.

Rob woke alone and began his day as normally as he could. He was off work for the whole week, so he went to the supermarket to buy food. J'aime bien faire du tourisme des RPG de temps en temps, me promener de forums en forums pour voir ce qui existe en ce moment, on est jamais à l'abri de trouver une petite pépite quoi...

Tout ça pour dire, ça m'a fait bizarre de tomber sur des forums (certains super chouettes au demeurant) avec des minimum de mots imposés. 300 ou 400 mots, rien d'impossible certes...mais...on est payé pour ?

Autant à l'époque, ça se faisait beaucoup...autant la communauté RPGique a quand même pas mal évolué me semble-t-il et le temps accordé au RP n'est plus vraiment le même quand on jongle entre vie pro, vie privée et loisirs.

Un peu dommage du coup, cette discrimination anti-RP courts qui ne sont pas moins qualitatifs pour autant.

OK, so this story really ballooned in my mind and it started to become clear that drawing it all out would be a pretty big undertaking, especially since much of it is exposition.

I made the pivot to writing most of it out because as a dyslexic person, it does me good to practice writing (I tried for the style of a history book? Maybe?). Prior warning on any typos, just roll with it.

In post-war Illyria, the land finds itself ensnared in a web of adversity. A dwindling population hampers agricultural endeavors, while power struggles over vacant leadership positions sow discontent among the people. Whispers circulate, advocating for Illyria's right to select its own leader from someone who lives within their own borders.

This chosen person would safeguard the interests of Illyria and its inhabitants from being used as a military power but ignored in times of peace. Progression is overdue, trade is being stunted, and the now-largely female population (due to the losses during the war) is eager for equality.

And thus enters Emerie, a Carynthian and a Valkyrie, as well as a small-business proprietor. Practical and resolute, Emerie begins to garner support from the predominantly female populace, with her Carynthian status creating male allies as well. She envisions a future of thriving trade, using her own experience running her shop, and dreams of Illyria never being lacking in spices and salt.

She envisions cultivating an economy based on tourism, enticing other courts to partake in Illyria's small shops and enterprises, and this will help build new businesses like hotels and guided tours.

As the movement gains traction, the final piece of the puzzle falls into place: Devlon. Possessing the wisdom of age and name recognition she lacks, Devlon bridges the divide between the disparate camp factions and gives her 'legitimacy' to the wary males by standing as Emerie's second-in-command.

Devlon wants independence for Illyria and is smart enough to see that getting on board with Emerie and her group would give the movement more traction and more likelihood of success.

(It helps that Nesta, ever vigilant, casts an ominous witchy glance at Devlon whenever he looks to be up to no good. He will eventually establish himself as a trusted confidant to Emerie and her government. )

In a collaborative effort with their loyal companions, Emerie and Devlon meticulously pen a declaration of independence so thorough and thoughtful that even Rhys, the High Lord of the Night Court, accedes to its terms. Acknowledging that the most advantageous course of action for Illyria is to empower it, Rhys pledges financial aid as seed capital while the newly independent nation gets on its feet. A special bond endures between Illyria and the Night Court, now operating as sovereign entities with far less strain than before.

Emerie becomes the Prime, with Devlon as her Second-in-Command. There's an initial forum with citizens to share their worries, followed by a celebratory party DJ-ed by Nesta's ipod-egg and featuring singing by Gwyn.

Rhysand employs this secession as a catalyst to deepen his involvement in the Hewn City, but this time with benevolent intentions. Bereft of the Illyrian army, he endeavors to gain control over the Darkbringers and seeks to enhance the quality of life therein, offering the possibility of migration to Velaris for those who desire it.

With Nesta and Cassian at the helm of two formidable armies—the Valkyries and the Illyrians, respectively—Illyria solidifies its status as a force to be reckoned with in Prythian. This commands immediate respect from the other courts, who are intrigued at this new country for them to trade and visit (but not dare to take on in battle).

Oh, and did I mention that our trailblazer Emerie secures a seat at the High Lord table being the first female and elected leader to sit there? Because she does.

Gwyn, bravely venturing forth from the confines of the library, champions the cause of non-High Fae rights. As a part-nymph, she has personally encountered bigotry, which resonates with the plight of other marginalized fae and Illyrians. (Remember all that 'lesser fae' bs from ACOTAR?)

Gwyn assumes the mantle of their advocate, bolstered by Nesta, who desires a future where her part-Illyrian child will never experience such animosity. Several priestesses get involved and their 'safe haven library' mission expands to other courts (becoming a quasi-embassy) run by a priestess-ambassador. Helion and Meallan are invaluable as transportation while they get set up.

In this shared mission, Nesta stands as Gwyn's steadfast second, while Gwyn reciprocates as Nesta's second within the Valkyrie army. Together, they dedicate their efforts to train any woman who aspires to be empowered and thrive.

Emerie bestows a position of authority upon one of her close friends in Windhaven; a fellow small-business owner, who becomes the Chief of Trade. She begins by establishing a robust import framework, laying the groundwork for future exports and imports. Initially targeting the Night Court as a trade partner, their aspirations eventually extend to encompass all of Prythian.

Azriel becomes both emissary for the Night Court and shared spymaster. This mutually beneficial alliance allows Illyria and the Night Court to share confidential intelligence. By being more involved in Illyria, Azriel begins to reconcile his own long-held prejudices to his people and heritage. He splits his time evenly between the two courts (when he's not spying).

Nesta and Cassian live in Illyria full-time, training their armies and raising their family. Nesta also dedicates time to creating a night life by helping establish several clubs/bars with dancing and music for all to enjoy. Eventually talented Illyrians will form schools dedicated to the arts. Speaking of school...

Devlon's cause is education. Too proud to ever admit he's wrong, he realizes he needs to be right more often than not to make that work. He sets up schools in each camp, many of which also serve as boarding schools for the orphans. He claims it because it's because he doesn't want to deal with wild children running about, but he becomes very invested in education and it gets really dusty in here whenever a child hugs his leg.

This emancipation advances Illyria and the relationship with the Night Court is forever made more solid now that there's mutual respect and admiration between the two.

Are you still reading? Oh my goodness, thank you. As you can see, this idea would have been tricky to draw out since most of it is exposition.

Locations include: an underground area shot in night vision, a bridge during the day, walking around a field with backpacks and EMF sensors. The montage fades out, then fades back in to reveal an office-like space with several conspiracy cork boards. The two young men walk in. Both are wearing flannel shirts with the sleeves rolled up. They are joined by a third extremely tall man who is wearing a trench coat and turtleneck sweater. While the other two men are posed naturally, looking directly at the camera, and smiling, the third man has a thousand-yard stare and is standing completely straight. Words at the bottom of the screen briefly identify them as Ned, Azrael, and Jimmy.]

NED: Welcome, investigators, to the first half of our very first two-parter.

AZRAEL: And to those of you joining us for the first time this very special day, welcome to our Investigation into all things paranormal. I’m Az, and this is my older brother Ned.

NED: And this is our best friend Jimmy.

JIMMY: Hng.

NED: You’re right, we’re not paid for introductions. What we are paid for is investigating the truth behind paranormal events all across America. So. Az, tell us. What are we doing this week? Where are we headed?

AZRAEL: This week we’re not headed anywhere.

NED: What? But we’ve got to go somewhere.

AZRAEL: And we will! You see, we’re going to be filming the second half of our two-parter live, on location, in the most haunted city in the world: Amity Park, Illinois.

NED: Allegedly haunted. And why aren’t we going this week?

AZRAEL: Because if we went this week, we wouldn’t have time to tell our viewers the whole, supernatural history of Amity Park. That’s how haunted this place is. We can’t even summarize it in one hour.

NED (crosses his arms): It sounds like Az fell for the hype machine, huh, Jimmy?

JIMMY: Hng.

AZRAEL: I did not fall for the hype machine.

NED: You’ve been tourist trapped, little bro.

AZRAEL: Shut up and let me show you my research, okay? By the end, Jimmy will be agreeing with me. But first, I want to let you know we won’t be the only investigators, little i, on the scene. We’ve got some rivals.

The Smart Twin: Hey, I hate to be that guy, but there’s more. A whole bunch of the usual suspects were really insulted by the whole Cryptid Crawl thing. And they’ve teamed up this time.

Cynosure (OP): Are you telling me there’s three groups of weirdos about to descend on this town? Three? We already have the GIW and the Fentons. If we get any more, we’ll hit some kind of weirdo critical mass.

I want to have an idea of what they're like before we start talking about them on the public boards and offering help with the 'problem.' My Hair: They've all worked in Amity before. Their tiger almost mauled me once. None of them caught Phantom for the bounty.

Maldives president courts investors in China as Indian ties sag - Reuters

At an "Invest Maldives" forum in a southern Chinese port city, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu shook hands and exchanged words with smiling local officials on a China visit set to deepen bilateral ties as the archipelagic nation pirouettes [sic?] away from India.[...]

Muizzu became president of the Indian Ocean nation in November after winning on his "India Out" campaign platform under which he called New Delhi's huge influence a threat to sovereignty. His government has since asked dozens of locally based Indian military personnel to leave. And in an apparent snub to India, Muizzu is in China this week, before any visit to his country's giant neighbour. In Fuzhou, the Chinese city designated as the start of China's maritime "Silk Road", Muizzu said China remained one of his country's "closest allies and developmental partners", according to a statement released by his office.
