Oh okay!!! Well first of all, the most commonly used clothing of traditional male, and most well known, is the Barong Tagalog (or most commonly just Barong)!!!

It's this funky thing!

As you can see, it's see-through! And it's worn over a shirt called camisón or camiseta, which is basically just collarless shirts, they can either be long sleeved or short sleeved! You wear them with trousers and don't tuck them in, and are usually worn with dress shoes!

Kuya is a photography series challenges the traditional gender roles and societal norms, speaks to the struggle for acceptance within the Asian LGBTQ+ community within Aotearoa.

The photographs take on a personal story of a young bisexual Filipino male, Marius. The photobook serves as a narrative that showcases the complex intersections of culture, family dynamics, and queer identity, emphasising the significance of support, acceptance, within both familial and societal contexts. 

The term “Kuya” refers to the older brother in Tagalog, symbolising the pressure and expectations placed on older siblings, and embodies traditional assumptions of masculinity. This photobook empathetically explores Marius’s inner and outer worlds, capturing his struggle with feeling trapped and not meeting the expectations of being an older brother or making his immigrant parents proud. 

Wordmark:

The Kuya wordmark incorporates a strikethrough, symbolising Marius's rejection of traditional expectations and labels. This design element represents Marius's journey to challenge conventional roles and pressures as an older brother in a Filipino family. 

The strikethrough symbolises his struggle to break free from societal norms and embrace his authentic identity, despite cultural and familial expectations. It effectively communicates the conflict between external perceptions and internal reality, emphasising the courage required to redefine himself.

The images were initially shot in color and then edited to black and white with a dark grey tone. This choice symbolises an ongoing, unspoken issue, suggesting that these struggles are hidden and left in the dark. The monochrome palette emphasises the shadowy nature of these feelings and internal conflicts.

TAAL BATANGAS

📍HISTORY:

The town of Taal was founded by Augustinian friars in 1572. In 1575, the town transferred later to the edge of Domingo Lake, now Taal Lake in 1575. In 1754, Taal Volcano erupted endangering the town of Taal which stood at present day San Nicolas. Threatened by the new danger, the townspeople, together with the Agustinian Francisco Benchucillo, sought refuge in sanctuary of Caysasay. In 1955 the northern barriors of San Nicolas, Gipit, Bangin, Pansipit, Calangay, Sinturisan, Talang, Abilo, Balete, Bancora, Saimsim, Maabud, Mulawin, Tambo, Clumala, Alasas, Calawit, Pulangbato were seperated from Taal and formed into the municipality of San Nicolas.

📍GEOGRAPHY:

According to the Philippine Statistics authority, the municipality has a land area of 29.76 square kilometer (11.49 sq. mi) consisting 0.95% of the 3, 119.75- square- kilometer (1,204.54 sq. mi) total area of Batangas.

A dominant feature of the province of Batangas is Taal Lake. It covers an area of 270 square kilometer (100 sq. mi) and is draned by Pansipit River down into Balayan Bay. Pansipit is one of the major ecological highways that allow migration of two fish species: maliputo (Cranx ignobilis) and muslo (Cranx marginalis) which are unique to lake taal. 📌SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF CAYSASAY

It is a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Caysasay in Taal, Batangas in the Philippines. The image, which depicts the Immaculate Conception, is believed to be one of the oldest in the country. Having been found in 1603 by a man fishing in the Pansipit River. The subsequent Marian apparitions documented by Spanish colonial church leaders were the first in the country; devotees today continue to attribute miracles to the Virgin. The image was canonically crowned in 1954 and was later given the title the “Queen of the Archdiocese of Lipa”. The feast day of Our Lady of Caysasay is celebrated every December 8 and 9. The image spends half the week in the Shrine of Caysasay and the other half at the Basilica de San Martin de Tours, to satisfy the needs of the locals and followers.

📍EXPERIENCE A vlog is not something we expect to do in the coming year. Our group isn’t all that interested in vlogging, but once we finished our vlogs it seemed like we all had a great time doing it, and it was both enjoyable and stressful at the same time, which is something we all appreciate. On the way to Taal Batangas town, we’ve all began shooting at Robinson Lipa, where we’ll be discussing how to get there. We were all shy at the start of our first vlog, so it was a lot of fun for us. In the end, though, we will increase our self-esteem! Eventually, after about an hour, we arrived at the Balisong Shop and began interviewing the Balisong salesman. We were all awestruck because this was the first time we had seen the various styles of Balisong. After that, we moved on to the next location we wanted to visit. The Taal Basilica in Taal Batangas, Asia’s largest church, was first shot. During filming in Taal Basilica, we were all awestruck, awed, and stunned by the church’s splendor. We headed to the Caysasay Church in Brgy after filming at Taal Basilica. We all observed the exquisite baroque architecture of the church, as well as the design of the wall and sailing, when filming at Tatlong Maria, Taal Batangas. We decided to get lunch in Brgy after filming. We all enjoyed Tatlong Maria, and it was so wonderful that we were completely satisfied. We proceeded to the Lorenzo Ruiz Steps after dining; it was our first time seeing the Lorenzo Ruiz Steps, so we were astonished and impressed. We decided to take a group photo before moving on to the next location, and we must say that it was both memorable and stress-free. It was a great event for us and we continued on to our next destination: Barong Tagalog gown rental. We were all awestruck and delighted by the variety of gown and barong Tagalog designs. The only word we could say was “wow.” We all desired we could wear the rental gown, but we had to pay first. Our final decision was to take a break after an hour of walking and admiring the grandeur of historical sites before waiting for the lights to come on (Pailaw sa taal). They finally turned on the city of lights after nearly half an hour of waiting, and we began shooting our final vlog. We’ve all shared happy and amazing moments, learned more about the town’s history and tourism attractions, and gained a lot of self-assurance as a result.

A historical land mark and ancestral houses make Taal the top tourist attraction in Batangas. Their town’s tourist sustainability is based on four factors: In the first place, the Old Houses and Churches have been preserved so that visitors or tourists can see them. And, of course, it’s also for the next generation to see. Festivals and Christmas are only a few of the events that take place there. Their time and effort were devoted to putting up Christmas lights and pyrotechnics in the evening to entice additional guests. Second, because it is their product, they are confident in selling it. We everyone know that Taal’s primary product is Balisong, which is made from Batangas. Everyone in Taal knows who made it and when it will begin. Then there’s the wedding gown, which is known as the Burdang Taal Wedding Gown, and the barong, which is also known as the Philippines’ capital of the Barong. Because their product was so good, you’d think that someone would be able to test it out and become famous in that area. This creates a sense of attractiveness in their locations as well. Third, there are people. The local residents were fantastic since even the children knew the history of every church and museum in the area. They also pay attention to the historical landmarks that are located there. The government, on the other hand, is in charge of making the locations more appealing, as well as managing the facilities within the taal. Seeing Taal, the nicest sight in Batangas this year, has taught me a lot about how to maintain a tourist attraction in a place.

So! I wrote a somewhat lengthy reply to your ask from before and then saved it as a draft so that I could get back to it. Unfortunately, Tumblr ate it so I'll have to respond here, luckily I did screenshot the ask since my replies usually get eaten and I wanted to remember the ask. Sorry again for how long it's taken me to answer! I've been really exhausted from work lol.

Anyway, I wasn't exactly sure how to make this into a masterpost as there's not much to say about bakla that isn't just correcting the lies rando white people are saying. Bakla is just the term for feminine gay men in Tagalog, it's Cebuan counterpart is bayot.

Google translates bakla as 'queer', which is flagrantly wrong and homophobic. Wikipedia says, 'bakla is not tied to sexuality and is not a sexual orientation, thus it is not a direct equivalent of the English term "gay". Bakla are usually homosexual men, but on rare occasions, they can also be heterosexual or bisexual men.' this is incorrect as well. Bakla *is* the equivalent term for gay, and bakla are always homosexual men. It is not a 'third gender' at all, no one considers it to be so. Bakla know and understand that they are men, and though many of them dress in women's clothes and wear makeup, they still call themselves men. Some bakla, such as Vice Ganda (idk much about him now but when I was younger he was an extremely popular comedian, show host, and actor) are pretty much always in full drag e.g:

unlike weirdos in the West, these men still admit they are male and are fine with it! The Philippines, at least in Tagalog and Cebuan borrow words and codeswitch English words frequently, the word for transgender there is still 'transgender', as is 'transman' and 'transwoman'.

I know I sound repetitive but I'm trying to really make a point that these men are under no delusions that they are women, it being described as a third gender is non-Filipino nonsense. They are considered men by the entire population, male sinners by some of the religious population, and male freaks by both of some of the religious and secular population. Homophobia is obviously still the biggest problem bakla face, whilst homosexuality is not illegal in the Philippines, bakla are discriminated against in every sphere of life. In the Muslim regions of the Philippines, bakla are forbidden to basically be 'visibly' bakla, meaning they're not allowed to go out wearing dresses, makeup, etc. I will say however, that there is greater gay acceptance (or at the very least, tolerance) in the Philippines than in other SE asian countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.

Now, to precolonial Philippines which is the area I don't know as much about and I'd probably need to consult a few ppl if I were to say much about it. I do know that in the Moro regions bakla were persecuted for their homosexuality and often beaten and murdered. In the non Moro regions, they were basically seen as being incapable of fulfilling their role as male (not incapable of being male, just incapable of what was considered a proper male), and so they could serve alongside the babaylan (aka a shaman, which was a woman's role), as asog, which is a feminine male shaman. Also worth noting that precolonial Philippine traditions were not homogenous by any means so rules amongst groups pertaining to who could be shaman and who could not changed between tribes, regions, and time periods.

Fantastic idea. Let's give it a shot! I would love to see if a creator could and would be able to create a maxis-match classic Ballet Workout Set. Including two simple Tutu's one classic short the other one long. A classic leotard, wrap top, wrap skirt, ankle leg warmers as well as a pair of thigh high ones. I find the in-game versions kinda bland, and there are not many floral Kimonos even though its commonly seen in Japanese festivals. This seems like a fun idea! What I have been wanting for ages (like since TS2 era ages) is a hair style that completely covers one eye, like Violet at the start of The Incredibles. Most of the peekaboo bangs hairs I've seen are a little *too* stylish and I mostly just want one where someone is clearly trying to cover up half their face with it.

#SSSWish - I would love to see a someone put together clothing that accurately reflects the Starfleet uniforms seen on the television shows, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (collar version), "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (colored shoulders) or the later movie uniforms (grey shoulders w/ colored undershirt). It can be unlocked by creating an override and unchecking the frame restrictions in S4S, but then the body changes to a female frame. #SSSWishlist i know i already saw some people here ask for more yukata/kimono swatches here and i would like the say i really do think we need them (not just for the adults but the younger ages too, id like for the toddlers kimono not to have the hifu? vest as well but that sounds more complicated).

My Super Secret Wish is a mod, or even a tweak of an existing mod, that stops toddlers from shying away from hugs they ask for during the “Check Toddler” interaction. It is *so* irritating to see a toddler respond to a❓with a ❤️ and open arms then step back, often with a 💔, and push the adult away. I’ve tried to stop it with MCCC but no luck.

One of my favorite parts of the game is creating a restaurant or a vet clinic, but the employees are impossible to keep satisfied and they all eventually quit. It would be nice if there was a way to keep them permanently satisfied, or at least make it easier. There is a mod for this but it is extremely outdated and doesn't work anymore. If anyone could update it or make a new one that would be great! 😁

Hi ! There is quite a few things I’d like, but I narrowed it down to three “small” things:

- An accessory top with a high neckline and no sleeves - just to hide cleavage - maybe with some lace at the edge ? and several grey and pastel colors please.

- Some accessory prints for shirts, like those tukete has, maybe some aimed at kids and toddlers too ?

- Makeup for kids. Some people let their kids wear makeup in real life, but adult cc makeup don’t look right on kids, so if anyone is interested in trying… I’d like eye-shadow and lipstick, with some discreet options (but you can go all out too of course).

Hello! i’m not sure if its just my game bugging but the male child tiny living hair is broken and i don’t know where to start on fixing it. i tried to find a fix online but found nothing. in my game the hairline for that hair is so bad and its unfortunate cause it used to be my fav child hair. if someone that mods or makes cc could fix it or make a default replacement, i would forever be grateful.

Hello! This #SSSWish is such a fun idea~ Personally, I'd love if someone updated the Plantsims mods that have broken over the numerous updates. Like, G1G2's Revamped Plantsims, Triplis' Plantsim Interactions, and Simonch8's No Cooldown & Trait mods. #ssswish This is such a lovely idea! There are so many fun wishes! What I’d like to have (and I think would also be useful for other Simmers) is a wedding themed recolor of the “large pile of presents.” I usually put one of those piles in my wedding venue so that the bride and groom can “open presents” together. But the colors that are on the original are not what you usually see on presents at weddings. (I usually opt for the one that is mostly purple, since purple and lavender are my favorite colors.) What I’d like to have are recolors in white, white/gold, and white/silver. Maybe some white/pastels (especially lavender, pink and blue. The white/pastel recolors would also be nice for having a party that you call a “baby shower” especially if yellow and light green were also available. That kind of party isn’t in the game, but it should be!)

I don’t see the #SSSwish I submitted on your public list (I forgot to use the hashtag before) so I’m submitting it again. I would love to see a mod, or tweak of an existing mod, that stops toddlers from pulling away from a hug after they asked for one in response to a Check Toddler. The toddler will hold up its arms with a ❤️ in the speech bubble then step back and refuse the hug, and the relationship takes a hit. I tried MCCC’s tuner to stop it but it didn’t work.

With snowy escape there’s more build items that can be used, I’ve noticed there tends to be a lot of Japanese inspired cc even before that pack, but not a lot of things from other parts of Asia, especially ancient cultures or cultural items like instruments (decor), clothing, furniture (lohan beds), etc. I’ve gone looking but most of what I’ve found is locked behind chinese-only forums and is usually alpha…I just think it would be cool to see some mm stuff from other places esp as fandoms get more globalized

For the SSSW, as a disabled simmer, I would like to see either a trait if possible or even just some CAS or Build/Buy items that are for disabled sims so I can that aspect into my save.

Particularly K-drama style uniform tops that have variations, such as blazers and the types of ties ( e.g. ribbons, bows, regular ties, loose ties, no ties etc. ), cardigans, vests, half-zips, blouses, button downs and crewnecks ( just some examples ) for sims that like to show off their own style at school, despite the uniform.

I have another #SSSWish (if you don't mind). I don't know if it already exists but a mod which adds more family relationship options to CAS or the Sim menu. Like grandparents, cousins, step- and half-siblings, step-parents, etc. It would be easier instead of having to create additional Sims just to create diverse relationships.

I would love to see some more truly alien clothing options for the aliens, the males especially. I sometimes like to dress mine up in complete different outfits for their alien and disguise forms. When I want to give there alien form a totally authentic feel, but a different outfit in every category, I have so much trouble dressing up the males. So some new alien options would be wonderful.

The Meeting

“Quiet on set...! And...Action!”

Teagan watched in silent adoration as Charlie delivered his lines. She didn’t always have the opportunity to sneak away from work to watch him work, but today was an exception. The second season was well underway in the filming process and their popularity was increasing. Kenny noticed Teagan out of the corner of his eye and motioned her over so that she could watch the scene from the monitor. She was amazed at how Charlie looked playing Luke. She had met him three years ago when he was filming Season 1, but yet the boy on camera looked exactly like he did that same day three years ago.

Teagan had been visiting Vancouver that weekend to visit family and help her sister get settled. Her little sister had been accepted into the University of British Columbia in the Business program studying Accounting and Finance. She was the pride and joy of filipino immigrant parents as she was attending an esteemed university and getting a degree. All the while their oldest, Teagan, had opted for a non traditional method of getting into the marketing industry by working for a popular canadian clothing brand. Her sister was going to be a university graduate while Teagan worked her way up the ladder in a retail store. Teagan always knew that going to school wasn’t where her path was taking her, but she always knew that hard work, determination and experience were valuable assets in the job market. Something her parents would never understand.

“Charlie watch out!”

They were walking around Gastown in their cute summer dresses killing time before their dinner reservation, when Teagan was knocked over by another person. As she got her bearings, she felt cold liquid on her chest and the weight of another body. The other person quickly scrambled to their feet and profusely apologized, helping her stand as her cousins stood there in shock. She heard a couple more footsteps rush over to where she were standing, dusting off her butt and looking her tackler in the face. In an instant, Teagan had forgotten what had happened as she got lost in the deep green pools of the man in front of her. It wasn’t the eye colour that stole her focus, but rather the intensity of emotions that he conveyed through them. Teagan could see and feel the embarrassment, regret and sincerity of the man.

“Teags?”

Her cousin’s voice broke her trance and she blushed when she realized she had been staring. She noticed that two other people stood behind him, in which she assumed was her friend. One was fairly tall and blonde and the female with long auburn hair and a beanie. Teagan forced herself to focus on what the man was saying rather than the beautiful eyes in front of her.

“I am so so so sorry. I completely didn’t see you and didn’t mean to ruin your dress or tackle you to the floor” Teagan looked down at her once cute summer dress covered in iced coffee from Starbucks. “Is there any way I can make it up to you?” Teagan stood there speechless.

“Uh-uhm- D-Don’t worry about it! It’s totally fine” Teagan felt slightly flustered and out of breath, her blush deepening as she heard her cousin scoff on the side. “I can quickly just go and buy something else to wear”

“Please let us pay for it! We feel horrible!” the man’s female friend offered coming closer to Teagan motioning the other two males as well.

“Seriously, it’s fine! I’m totally fine! Don’t worry about it!” Teagan couldn’t quite understand why she felt embarrassed when they were the ones who were at fault. “What happened anyway?”

“Our friend thought it would be funny to run away with my iced coffee and wasn’t looking where he was running. It’s my fault too because I was chasing after him” the blonde one shyly confessed, rubbing his neck apologetically. “I hope we didn’t ruin your night”

“We were just killing time waiting for our reservation. It isn’t for another half an hour, so we have ample time to grab Teagan a new dress” Teagan silently thanked her cousin as her brain was malfunctioning at the handsome man in front of her. 

“We seriously feel so bad, can we please make it up to you somehow?” the female tried to offer some sort of compensation again.

“It’s totally fine, no hard feelings. It wasn’t like it was on purpose right?” Teagan’s brain started to slowly function as she declined the offer of the female.

“Seriously, we need to make this up to you two. I won’t take no for an answer and if you do say no, I’ll just follow you around until you say yes” The handsome man took a step closer to Teagan, causing her breath to catch and swallow deeply.

“Uhm, okay! I mean, if you won’t take No, I’d much rather just make new friends instead of gaining a stalker!” Teagan could feel her words tumble clumsily out of her mouth. Thus began the start of a new friendship. Teagan, her cousin and their new friends ventured to the nearest H&M to find something else for her to wear. Turns out that the other female, Savannah, had excellent taste in clothing. They all came to learn that they were all in the same age range, with Tegan being born in 1997 and Owen, the blonde being born in 2000. Teagan also came to learn that her handsome tackler’s name was Charlie and that all three of them were actors for a new Netflix project that was scheduled to air in the New Year. The three ladies got along incredibly and their shopping trip turned into all five of them going to dinner. They had lucked out when a table of 5 before them no-showed the restaurant. They spent the evening getting to know one another and a deep friendship was easily formed. Throughout the night, Charlie and Teagan connected on several levels and at times forgot there were three other people at the table. Occasionally the two would banter or tease each other, even though they had met that day. As their dinner came to an end and bills were paid by none other than Charlie, the girls exchanged contact information, planning to hangout on their next day off. But before Teagan could walk away for the night, Charlie slipped a piece of paper in Teagan’s hand apologizing one more time for running into her.

‘Coffee? This time I won’t spill it on you’ was messily written on the one side, with his phone number on the other. Teagan’s cousin didn’t notice the smile that lit up her face, but she quickly snapped a picture of it and tucked it in her purse for safe keeping.

That coffee date with Charlie ended up becoming a regular occurrence, though the only one who would be drinking coffee would be Teagan as Charlie always settled for tea or whatever dessert or smoothie he wanted to explore that day. She appreciated his adventurous side as she was creature of habit at times. She learned a lot about the industry and the many quirks of Charlie Gillespie.  Soon, coffee dates turned into dinner dates and dinner dates turned into weekend cuddles and relaxation, but filming would eventually wrap and the holidays approached, leaving Teagan and Charlie to make a definitive decision in their relationship. Teagan didn’t expect to extend her Vancouver visit from a week to about a month and a half. Reality was coming fast ans soon Charlie would be back to LA and Teagan working in Edmonton.

“Charlie, what are we?” she asked him as both sat on the couch of his apartment. Mama Mia played softly in the background on the TV as she turned to face him.

“Well what do you want to be?” he cheekily asked her, flashing one of his killer smiles.

“Je suis sérieuse. Tu retournes à LA toute suite et moi à Edmonton. C’est quoi ça?" Charlie knew that when Teagan spoke to her in french she was serious. It was one of the things he learned early on about Teagan. He was pleased to know that she was fluent in french, having taken an IB course in high school, but they often bantered about their accents. She understood how french was a huge part of who he was and she didn’t speak to him in french unless it was important. She knew it got his attention right away since he was so used to being around people who only spoke english.

He paused the TV, complete silence filling the room, both of them facing one another. Charlie was off to Vietnam for the holidays and Teagan planned to spend hers with her family in Edmonton, seeing as she had made an impromptu extension to her trip in Vancouver. He knew that the next time they would be seeing one another they would be crossing borders to visit one another and to be honest the distance felt a bit overwhelming. But Charlie couldn’t shake the fact that there was something about Teagan that he didn’t want to let go. 

“What’s going to happen when we both go back to living the way we were before one another?” Charlie chuckled softly to himself, knowing his decision. Teagan cocked an eyebrow at his response.

“Well nothing’s going to go back to the way it was before Teags” she loved hearing Charlie use her nickname. He said it in a way that sounded so comforting to her ears. “You’re mine right?”

“Define: mine” Teagan smiled coyly at Charlie, already understanding what he meant. “I need help understanding you. I don’t speak Charlie Gillespie Language” Charlie rolled his eyes and got down in front of Teagan, settling in between her legs.

“Teagan Jillian Valencia, will you be my girlfriend?” He jutted his lips forward ever so slightly to create the perfect pouty lips and then he comboed them with his best puppy eyes. Teagan shook her head at the dramatics of the man in front of her and kissed him on the lips, pulling him up and forward. “So, that’s a yes?”

She nodded and kissed him again, this time a little more aggressively. Charlie took the hint and started getting all handsy, but Teagan broke their kiss. “As much as I would love to do this right now, Owen comes home in 30 minutes and I would much rather him not walking in on us, again”

“Well let’s make this quick and move to the bedroom!”

Night Elf Headcanons - Tattoos

These are headcanons for the Kaldorei that I’ve crafted or figured out with my own comic in mind. So if they are different from more widely accepted headcanons about the same subjects (or contradict them completely) that is why. Still I thought they were worth sharing! I divided them based on subject so I’m not posting them all in one massive wall of text.

Some parts of these headcanons may already be known and accepted by RPers but I wanted to add some of my own ideas to them as well.

Here’s my headcanons for Kaldorei tattoos!

Kaldorei tattoos are done the same way as Filipino Kalinga tattoos. Basically, two sticks: one with a needle or thorn on the end and one that is blunt. The thorn/needle is dipped in wet charcoal (or colored wet charcoal in the Night Elves’ case) and then the thorn/needle is tapped repeatedly into the skin with the blunt stick. 

Deciding on marks can happen via meditation and introspection, or physical revelation. For some female Kaldorei, tattoo marks come to them in a clear message or physical experience, for others it comes in a vision or cryptic physical or spiritual message. For some it is revealed through multiple ways. All are valid and can happen in a matter of moments or over a long period of time.

The marks each heave meaning and one that connects deeply to each wearer. But sometimes even they do not know the meaning until much later in life.

Not choosing marks or not receiving a clear message for marks, while uncommon, can be considered normal still. Some night elf women never receive their marks and it is typically a non-problem. However, some Kaldorei may adhere to strict traditional beliefs and look down upon those who chose to not receive marks.

Typically, each female Kaldorei is paired with a mentor or Do within their projected profession or class leading up to them receiving their marks. Although, sometimes this mentor can simply be a close family friend, older sibling, or family member.

The pain of getting it is the real test. While learning what your marks ARE is the first big test, the real ordeal is actually getting them. Most get them in sessions that take a few days at least. Although, some brave through it and get it done quicker. While pain can be dealt with afterward, it is typically seen as a sign of strength when one can withstand the pain as the ceremony is underway.

Tattooing is usually done by a close female family member (mother, grandmother...great grandmother, or aunt, older sibling...) who has already received her marks. This is partly because it helps emphasize the relationship of Mother Moon and her children, but also for practical reasons. The closer the better, as the sticks used for tattooing are passed down and are only used on close family members as a health precaution. 

A priest (or druid) is present to bless the ceremony and to keep swelling and bleeding at bay. While it is sort of considered taboo to heal while the ceremony is underway, having a healer present ensures that any excess health concerns or aftermath swelling and pains are dealt with quickly.

Tattoos are actually common for both male and female, often as a way to show achievements, social standing, and pride in something. While the Kaldorei females are known widely around the world to be the tattooed ones of their race, that is mainly because the facial tattoos are so culturally significant and symbolistic. But many Kaldorei have tattoos (often hidden by clothes or smaller on the body) of symbols or phrases relating to their achievements in life, class, interests, faith/Elune, or their loved one(s). 

Since they are a long-lived race, the tattoos often fade and must have touch-ups.  Some chose to maintain the upkeep, while others may let them fade.

What are your recommendations for writing asian characters?

Well considering that there are nearly 50 countries in Asia, thousands of ethnic groups, and at least 4.5 billion Asian people all around the world, it kind of depends.

First, you need to decide what ethnicity you’re attaching to the character. An “Asian character” just isn’t enough tbh. What does that mean? Then decide where this character is from and possibly what time frame (of course, these can be unknown depending on your story). Then decide whether your character is culturally relevant or not.

A character’s culture is not as relevant in a spacey sci-fi story versus a high school slice-of-life story (of course, it depends on the story). Remember that if you’re not culturally exploring non Asian characters in your story, then don’t culturally explore Asian characters because you’re singling them out and unintentionally making them exotic. Also, if you’re making a fantasy story where race and culture are irrelevant, there’s almost no reason to make a character Asian because the concept of “Asian” shouldn’t even exist. In a story I’ve thought of for example, race doesn’t exist. They just have different skin color.

The easiest way to write a character whose identities you have little or no knowledge of is to base them on real people—like friends, family members, celebrities, historical figures, or whoever. At least you’d be able to reference real people. I like watching videos of street interviews for example. This allows me to get an idea of how people talk and express themselves in real life.

Creating characters should be fun and have some stretch of imagination. It shouldn’t be about creating boxed-in, restricted robots that are just products of culture and research where everything has to be correct all the time. Your human characters are people with multiple layers just like you are. Yes, culture can guide people, but people are not their culture. One of the biggest issues when it comes to Asian characters written by non Asian writers is that we tend to be written as products of culture (often stereotypical too) and not as people.

In another story I’ve been thinking of, the first main character is a woman that can generate and bend steel to her will. She also happens to be Japanese and Ghanaian. It starts and ends there—there are no cultural, traditional, or any other things involved with her character. She’s a person that changes and develops and hurts and does the hurting and makes decisions and mistakes and everything else like anyone else. She’s just a person.

In reality, there is no correct way to write an “Asian” character because Asian people have so many different personalities, feelings, ideas, motivations, and whatnot. At the very least, people should avoid racist and gendered stereotypes/tropes. For example, Asian men shouldn’t be written to be made fun of and Asian women shouldn’t be written to serve a male character’s desires. And especially, “broken English accents” should be avoided if you’re not Asian tbh.

The other thing is that cultural clothing, traditions, histories, and languages should NOT be blended together (unless that character is mixed). Creativity is cool but racism isn’t part of being creative. If your character is Korean, they shouldn’t be wearing Chinese clothing. If your character is Filipino, they shouldn’t be bringing packed-Thai lunches to school. So on and so forth. If you insert any kind of cultural implication into your character, that part of them HAS to be right whether they be Asian or not.

But otherwise, human characters are people regardless of what race or ethnicity they are. If a person similar to you were being written in a story somewhere, you wouldn’t want the writer to write you so stereotypical and one-dimensional right? You’d probably want them to write you as a complex (or simple) person and have fun doing it. That’s how we should think about writing characters. They may not be real but they’re influenced by real things that exist in real people.

Camisa de Chino: This traditional shirt is characterized by its Mandarin collar and button-down style. It’s typically worn with trousers and can be both formal and casual.

Loincloth and Bahag: In some indigenous communities, particularly among the indigenous peoples of the Cordillera region, men traditionally wear loincloths called “bahag.” These are made from woven cloth and are often accompanied by other accessories like beaded necklaces and headgear.

 Traditional Accessories: In certain tribal communities, men wear minimal clothing such as g-strings made from woven materials. They also adorn themselves with traditional accessories like beadwork, feathers, and other symbolic ornaments.

It’s important to note that the Philippines has over 7,000 islands with numerous indigenous groups, each having their own distinct cultural attire. The costumes mentioned above are just a few examples, and there are many more variations and styles across different regions and ethnic groups in the Philippines.

"A classic element in low-brow Filipino entertainment is the flamboyant, shameless gay man. We all know the basic caricature–standing with hips cocked, pursed lips a bright fuchsia, comic relief as either the best friend or a part of the squealing extras chasing after the male hero.  The lesbian in a baggy shirt and cropped hair, grinning mischievously at every leggy woman they happen to pass.  An easy laugh.  Rarely are they written as well-rounded characters, but they’re always there, accessory or otherwise.

The same could be said about television programs that star gay hosts, pulling in hoards of viewers. Every Sunday night, thousands of Filipinos tune in to Gandang Gabi Vice, laugh at jokes that center around homosexuality.  It’s light, and even some of the most conservative parents nod along to Vice Ganda’s ostentatious dance numbers.  They’re used to the brand of antics that have been present in movies, television shows, and whatever else, as long as all of it is from a distance, of course.

Yet the same people who hoot and holler at the gay stereotypes in movies, who love Vice Ganda, are the ones who oppose LGBTQA+ rights.

Switch the channel from Gandang Gabi Vice to a political debate regarding gay marriage, and the atmosphere of the room considerably changes. Jaws clench. Breathing becomes strained.  The giggles at a funny anecdote about a man’s boyfriend abruptly stop once the notion of that boyfriend becoming a man’s husband is presented, and the conservative parents are suddenly reminded of their beliefs once more.  That time-out from their “traditional morals” has ended.

Why is this?

Perhaps because it’s hard for people to see gay people as more than extras in a television show.  To see them as actual people.  Who kiss, and love, and who perhaps want to get married, too.  Gay people for so long have only been portrayed as secondary characters, written in only to get a few extra laughs; the thought of them existing for themselves, beyond easy humor, tends to cause discomfort. Because they have been treated as jokes.

In the movie theaters. On the television screens.  In the streets, when feminine gay men choose to wear feminine clothes, when masculine lesbians choose to wear masculine clothes.  In the punchline of homophobic jokes.  They’ve been made easy targets by the mainstream media–and thus, have been made difficult to take seriously.

A 2013 survey entitled “The Global Divide on Homosexuality” conducted by the US-based Pew Research Center showed that 73 percent of adult Filipinos agreed with the statement that “homosexuality should be accepted by society.”  The survey showed that the Philippines was among the most gay-friendly countries in the world, despite the Catholic religion playing a big part even in the sociocultural aspect of our society. Yet, when Jonas Bagas, executive director of the TLF Share Collective, was asked if the gay community in the Philippines felt accepted, he answered, “Hardly.”

“I think that the study only reflects the perceived acceptance of the LGBT community based on the high visibility of gay entertainers. It’s acceptance [that is] contingent on how you fit the acceptable stereotype—the gay entertainer, the creative, talented bakla, the lesbian security guard,” he continues.  “Once you go outside these stereotypes, that’s when you encounter rejection.”

Perhaps it’s time to treat LGBTQA+ people as more than just the sidekicks, the butt of the joke, or the comic relief.  Perhaps it’s time they be portrayed as more than just something that straight people can laugh at."
