Yeah. The violent "punch your local terf" thing has been around for about a decade. I don't know what exactly started it.

But my guess is that the Ronda Rousey/Fallon Fox beef was a catalyst.

Ronda was a big deal in the early 2010s. She was one of the first female UFC stars to break into mainstream pop culture. Then, in 2013, Dana White found some psychopath, turned him into Fallon Fox, and used him for manufactured UFC drama. Ronda naturally refused to fight Mr. Fox. After that, Ronda became the foremost TERF in everyone's mind. In the mid 2010s, when TRAs would explain to people what a TERF is, they'd use Ronda as the example. I know this because that's how they explained it to me back in the day.

Anyway, this was an influential event for the TRA movement. It planted a seed in the activism hivemind.

And the other factor is the other famous early 2010s TIM, Tom Gabel. Before 2012, TIMs were just stealth homosexual transexuals and suburban straight male AGP fetishists. And there was no solidarity or connection between those two groups. But then one of those suburban straight male AGP fetishists happened to be Tom Gabel. He had gone from crust punk hero to sellout supreme. He had lost all his punk cred in exchange for a white picket fence. But he found his financial success and suburban married fatherhood life boring. So becoming Laura and making transgender music was really his only option at that point. Suddenly, straight crossdressers weren't just creepy suburban men. They were punks, too.

A lot of young college students wanted to Support Trans Women so they started listening to Against Me. And basically overnight, everyone traded in their NorthFace jackets for punk denim and ACAB patches.

So Tom Gabel came out as trans in 2012. Fallon Fox came out in 2013. Tom's first trans album came out in 2014. Ronda said she'll never fight Fallon Fox in 2014. And by 2015, college kids had patches on their denim jackets that said "punch a TERF." In 2016, boxer/physicist/"TERF" Magdalen Berns started making youtube videos. And that really cemented the "punch a TERF" energy.

And that's where the modern TRA movement got its flavor from.

yes absolutely!! while dean studies is my first love i also deeply love cas analysis (casnalysis?) and wanna strive to do more of it. here’s some stuff off the top of my head:

1. gender, sexuality, heavenly embodiment

this is much more theological and less psychological than dean’s whole Deal because there’s so much fascinating stuff around how the angels in general experience express and conceptualise gender (@autisticandroids has a good post about angel gender & lily sunder has some regrets) but for cas in particular there’s this fascinating kind of collective fandom agreement (which i DO also agree with) that cas’ own gender kind of is gay man, that he actively chose gay manhood, but also that he’s kind of..... lacking the Insane Genderishness that dean exhibits at all times, even though he actively chose to engage in male gendering and became so comfortable housed Within Jimmy that he, as some post i saw the other day that i can’t find anymore said, “became his own body” when jimmy died. 

like on the one hand there’s an almost-canonical transness to the whole process but it also never feels fully written-into because 1) the supernatural writers for all their insanity are sometimes very boring and *most* of the time only feel interested in narratively expressing angels As Their Vessels anyways and just like leaving convenient spaces around these questions (boldest thing they ever did was hot girl cas which i WISH i had the range to unpack) 2) there’s a vague inevitabilist shrug to the whole thing since they obviously weren’t gonna recast misha collins (though they HAVE tried to get rid of him) and 3) something amorphous about cas’ entire..... personhood? makes him Empty Of Gender as a contrast to dean’s Full Of Gender (i believe it was @deanwinchestergender who said this) and like is it just the juxtaposition to dean/jensen’s whole insane Deal? or something else? 

like he actively chooses the terms of his own embodiment and yet narratively it feels like a shrug. and we’re all like “well obviously even though he’s a celestial being he was always a gay man” and like WHY. i love it idk idk much to think about! and yeah just in general the theological questions of possession and cas genuinely Becoming a man as he iterates himself consciously towards humanity it almost feels like. by doing the most boring things possible with his gender they made it interesting? idk if that makes sense.

2. discipline, free will, metanarratives

cas is like a tool (“i am not a hammer, as you say”) held in constant discipline and surveillance by the system that enmeshes him and it’s really, really fascinating to watch the way the angels hold each other to conformity. especially pre-god they kind of produce each other as foucauldian disciplinary subjects (which i posted about here) in perpetual visibility through angel radio, generating their own and each other’s conformity rather than being directly ruled through like a single centralised source of power. only the spectre of a god. and obviously cas’ whole thing is that he has ALWAYS disobeyed and the narrative affords him this psychological interiority never given to the foucauldian subject, an internal will and desire for freedom in a way that fits more with the liberal subject (super roughly and not with the same pro-capitalist implications but he has this internal drive for self-liberation. 

and that’s also where the metanarrative comes in ofc! i think it was @dykecas who said that cas is a real person written by people who hate him, and there’s this crack in the narrative (mirroring the crack in his chassis) where cas gets in, over and over, despite all the order imposed by the show’s authorfathergod. like we’ve all seen the analysis about how it was Never supposed to be this way they DID try to fire misha collins in 2012 and yet this gay man literally cannot be stopped! i think actually his appearance in scoobynatural is a neat little distillation of this — he drops into this animated world originally with a singular purpose (Save Sam And Dean) the same way he dropped into lazarus rising with a single 3-episode arc (Save Dean). huge hammer behaviour. his “utility” diminishes within the narrative (he finds that he can’t fly in the scooby doo universe) and so he is no longer a tool/means to an end that salvation moves Through. and in the process (and huge creds to @lesbianyuugi for this) he does something ENTIRELY unrelated to his original cas-as-tool aim, and learns, like, the meaning of laughter from shaggy and scooby. WHICH brings me onto the third point

3. love, queer kinship, family-making

HE’S GAY AND HE’S A DAD! i feel like a lot of tumblr throws around the term “found family” in a very flat and tropey way (which is fine it’s cute and fun no matter what!) but like . GOD there’s so much specific stuff going on here. like the way that cas (unintentionally) obliterates the midwestern white christian nuclear family (made incarnate in the novaks) which like could be uniformly portrayed as an act of deep malice and villainy but instead grows to serve as a surrogate (if imperfect/complex, but DEEPLY loving) father figure for the gay daughter who has now escaped that nuclear family/seen it destroyed depending on how you read it? like he remasters the entire concept of fatherhood and it’s a very interesting (if DEEPLY) unintentional subversion of the homewrecking non-nuclear gay trope. cas is so good because his character arc doesn’t say “look, gay people can be normal and have perfect settled families just like you” it says “gay people DON’T have normal settled families actually and they are full of love anyways! or Because of the abnormalcy itself!) 

to cite ziz lesbianyuugi again he DOES queer fatherhood in his parenting of jack particularly because it really is one of the ONLY parent-child relationships in the show that breaks the incessant cycle of abuse and control and cold indifference perpetuated by the authorfathergod (a cycle reified in 15x20 lol). like god’s treatment of cas and his siblings mirrors john’s treatment of sam and dean (particularly dean) mirrors victor’s treatment of krissy and her crew mirrors dean’s later treatment of jack. there is a CONSTANT reiteration of the story of authorfathergod (often a father tightly entwined in biological kinship) treating a child as a mechanism or a tool or a means to an end. and cas looks at ALL that he has suffered and all that he is ever known and chooses constantly to reject it with every piece of love he expresses for his child. and not to sound like the kind of academic people make fun of on twitter but there is an INHERENT queerness to that. gay love will pierce through [the veil of death/the thick silence of abuse/the mechanism of godly control/hegemonic american masculinity] and save the day

Last time I visited he told a "funny anecdote" about an abusive ex who stalked his partner trying to get away from him to her jiu-jutsu gym and when my mom and I were like "hey it feels super fucking weird that your gym is allowing one of the few non-male members to feel unsafe because you're getting off on the fact that he bought a fake belt and sucks at the martial art so you can beat him easily when you're rolling" and he was like 'oh I don't get why you're mad at me for telling a story' as if it's incomprehensible that I had objections to the handling of the situation.

It's not a big leap to see that he thinks (but doesn't materially) understand/respect people who aren't cis men, but with his supposed egalitarian radical cred he can't understand that. Along with so many other aspects of actually living the reality of trying to build a non-hierarchical society, he can't wrap his head around why I drove myself into the ground picking up the slack on household maintenance tasks (dishes, laundry, folding/sorting, pest control wrt. food sources for bugs being cleaned up, sweeping, wiping down the kitchen, etc.) when it took my mom getting *literally fucking paralyzed with a neurological disorder* to do any daily household tasks with any regularity and talking shit about me for "being so hard on my siblings" when I had to pick up their slack every couple days without fail.

Really glad that he constantly belittles me while misgendering me, my long-term partner, and my younger sibling's partner, combined with my mother who built her identity around being "gay and trans friendly" but makes every conversation I start about how it feels shitty that my dad still conceives of trans people as their agab even if he hadn't met them before they came out as just "having a hard time like I am, why do you have to be so difficult to talk to."

-it was a good thing that the royal family was so secretive about their heirs during the first few years. ozai especially.

-he admitted to you that he planned on taking back the fire nation, and when he did, he would enact laws that would ensure that other people like him would be accepted and taken care of.

I've tried to figure it out myself and every explanation I come up with falls short somehow. it’s baffling to me too. i do have some theories, but there’s so much... deliberate self-delusion and lying that i would never do and even with the theories it’s hard to believe that people would actually go through so much effort and double think to lie about their sexualities.

i think some people want to be a victim and that the validation comes from wider society hating gay people and not from a more niche source like... actual gay people. they want something to blame their suffering/bad mental health/bad behavior (not that they’d ever admit there are toddlers that behave better than them) on and being the abused underdog gives them a superiority complex. identity politics have really encouraged this mentality that Only race, sexuality, gender, etc give ‘valid’ suffering, so people with tendencies towards disordered behavior (not to sound like an armchair psychologist lol) latch onto them so that their words are automatically given more power in certain spaces. and people telling them that they literally aren’t gay only adds to their victim mentality and self-righteousness.

this bleeds into the whole subculture that’s been made around being gay and how iced coffee, being bad at math, being stupid, not being able to drive, etc is gay. people will act shocked when someone who has a certain tumblr/twitter-esque personality and interests isn’t gay or bi, even though they have literally nothing to do with your sexuality. a lot of queer people are honestly just incels/social rejects and will play up their same sex attraction to find like-minded people online or in their college’s lgbt organization. because if you’re really into, like, dnd, it, steven universe, and moomin..... where else are you gonna find people with those interests? it’s a self-perpetuating cycle of people calling themselves queer to fit into the culture, which means other people have to call themselves queer to fit into the culture.

a lot of people also view lesbianism as a phase--whether or not they consciously believe it or not--and when they decide not to pursue men anymore they’ll call themselves gay to prove to themselves how serious they are about their deliberate disinterest in men--see, i’m even a lesbian!--rather than as a label that describes the state of never having been interested in men. i guess just saying ‘i’m bi but just got out of a bad m/f relationship and only want to date women’ doesn’t sound as finite or like as big of a fuck you to your ex boyfriend. the word lesbian is aspirational for the many bi women who’ve built a culture around hating that they’re attracted to men and for the ngs who say that they hated every sexual interaction they’ve had with men, that they were repulsed by the men they had sex with, etc. calling themselves lesbians gives them a definite out from ever needing to have sex with a man again and comphet helps remove any choice from their actions.

i’ve seen bi people say that the open-endedness of being bi is stressful because you don’t know the sex of your future spouse and that will Greatly impact your future, so calling yourself a lesbian when you’re in a women-only mood probably helps make it seem less daunting (funny, though, how they never call themselves straight for the sake of simplicity).

it’s obviously a fetish thing for men, but i think it is for a fair number of women too. they enjoy turning men on by talking about their sex escapades and they enjoy they thrill of a forbidden affair between a ‘lesbian’ and a man.

for some people i think it’s just ignorance. the majority of ‘lesbians’ have pasts with men and there are a lot of strange takes on lesbianism saying that lesbians can be attracted to women and trans women, that lesbians can be attracted to feminine men, that you can be a lesbian if you don’t feel like dating men anymore, that you can be a lesbian if you see men as good for sex but not for relationships, etc. people may have never been exposed to the idea that homosexuals consistently act like homosexuals and won’t fuck the opposite sex under any circumstances. and when the majority of gay people are bi, it’s easy to see anyone who insists that... gay people are gay and act like gay people...... as having some irrelevant fringe opinion.

it’s probably a combination of those things for most people, and i think it’s almost always about some internal benefit and not a societal benefit, because calling yourself a lesbian obviously doesn’t get you anything on a wider scale. they need to be a victim, they need to prove to themselves that they’ll never be with a man again, they need approval, and calling themselves lesbians helps them get that. but it doesn’t completely get them to where they want to be, because lying about your sexuality is obviously just a bandaid on whatever you’re actually dealing with and because Actual Lesbians exist. our very existence invalidates them and proves that they’re faking. so they try to rewrite what it means to be a lesbian in such a way that they fit in and they despise actual lesbians for effortlessly being what they want, or just because they’re genuinely just homophobic under all the identity soup--they’ll call themselves lesbians, use their status as lesbians to declare that lesbians like dick, all while being a regular homophobe who thinks that exclusive same-sex attraction is disgusting.

At a quiet university somewhere in England, connections are being made, or rather remade.

Unfortunately, a highly objectionable person has found a platform for their bigotry. Fortunately, Aziraphale has found a human who might be able to help. He always has liked to encourage the humans to do the actual thwarting, after all.

This was written as a spin-off of a larger university project that I was working on. Still no idea what I'm going to do with that, but this stands well enough on its own, so I thought I'd post it. In this series, if it becomes a series, I've taken the hints that Neil Gaiman dropped about what the "A" in A. Z. Fell stands for and why Aziraphale might be disgruntled that Crowley named himself "Anthony."

Q. What do you think is the image of the Kangol Brand? A. When I was performing as a dancer Kangol reminds me of what the locking dancers often wore. I think it’s a brand that is cute but still has a street style.

Q. Is there a special meaning behind the name BIGONE? A. There’s nothing special about it. My name is Daeil so, BIGONE. (t/n: dae (대) = big, il (일) = one)

Q. You belong to the label VMC (Vismajor Company). I am curious to how you came to work with VMC for the first time and why you joined the label. A. I was a big fan of Wutan about 3 years ago. I liked the song ‘MYNAMEISNAME’, and I was inspired by the tracks and choreographed the dance promo on YouTube. At that time, Wutan watched the video and contacted me, we met often since then. I naturally became friends with VMC (crew at the time), it felt good to be with them. Wutan called me to come out to play a year-end party, and suddenly talked to me about the possibility of doing something with VMC. I was a big fan of them [VMC] (Odee included) at the time, so I said yes. I remember feeling great.

Q. What kind of music style do you want to pursue? A. Currently, I’m working on a lot of trendy music. I think it’s the best thing to do right now.

Q. BIGONE is known to have a 3.3.3 rule on sns. Is there a particular reason for the layout? A. Since I use my cellphone a lot, naturally I visit SNS often. I wanted it to be pretty when I looked at it.

Building your ultimate dream car. It’s something most of us have done, and something all of us have dreamed of. Sometimes things go just as planned – parts fit, nothing breaks, aesthetics are perfect. Other times it can be a never-ending pursuit of perfection, with the finish line seeming to never quite come into view. Either way, it gets expensive fast. But it’s our hobby; it’s what we do.

What else would we spend our money on??

Losing lotto tickets? Save it?? None of that sounds like any fun at all. We rarely count the cost.

And if the car turns out just right, does the expenditure even matter??

  Serious Scratch

Well with the collector car seas truly changing… and with the tide shifting very much in the favor of the “S3Mag” demographic all of a sudden… EF and EG platforms are worth serious scratch, and the tide is continuing to rise. Low mile Civic SIs, Preludes, and Integra Type-Rs are trading for big dollars lately. Many values have literally shot up 200%… or simply added another zero to the end of the price. With that in consideration, modifying these cars now comes with a new calculous. Get it wrong – and decimate the value of a car that could be worth 20, 30, even $50,000 bucks! Mario Torres had a singular vision when he set out to build his dream EF, and as it turns out, his build is right in line with the rising Honda market. The unintended consequence is a build that’s not only completely righteous, but also worth more than any of us could have dreamed 5 years ago.

The 80’s & early 90’s are as totally awesome as ever… and with shows like MotorVice and Radwood bringing so much attention to these cars, it seems like everyone is searching out that quintessential look. If you’re like Mario, who built this stunning EF, then you CLEARLY get it.

SO MANY RIGHT CHOICES HAVE BEEN MADE.

Era correct paint, modifications, and graphics make this car shine right from the start. When I saw how complete the Gathers Stereo setup was, I just about flipped. Period correct touches come no better than that, particularly in a minty EF. Gone are the over the top body kits and stanced-out look of a few years ago… replaced by that early 90’s functional tuner look that screams ‘muscle car hunter’. Pinstripe sport seats keep with the era-correct theme, and are supportive, and frankly – look the business.

The 80’s & 90’s seem almost puritanical in my memories, at least as far as modding cars is concerned. A properly tuned NA Honda engine was more than capable of producing the appropriate amount of smiles per hour. Once VTEC kicked in, these cars were all about power to weight ratio + sonorous revs rising higher and higher. Before everyone was on the hunt for giant power numbers, and before big turbos spiked budgets & put holes in blocks, properly balanced performance was what tuner cars were all about. Mario’s car is the perfect embodiment of this methodology, and a TON of the younger generation importing now-legal JDM vehicles are taking that same approach. EFs are LIGHT! And legit canyon-carving cred is the result. This car literally begs you to flog it, and thanks to proper tuning, it will do it over & over for decades to come… without the fear of grenadeing an expensive block because of too much boost or too lean a mixture. Mario has built himself a collectible classic he can enjoy, that will only continue to appreciate while he drives it.

A study in ‘the details’

For Mario, this build has been a real labor of love. Building the car to period-correct perfection meant the hunt for rare EF OE parts… and it’s become a bit of an obsession. You don’t spend weeks and even months putting together a full Gathers Audio build out by accident.

Mario was ushered into the hobby at the age of 10. “Seeing my brother Luis and his friends building cars like his 1994 Accord back in the day is what really got me interested in cars in general.”

Fast forward to 2018, and Mario had found the well kept, original paint & engined car you see here. Mario continued, “The original engine gave out at 230k. I was daily driving it at the time until I decided to really go the JDM-correct build direction.”

SiR seats were sourced, and a high compression JDM d15b VTEC engine from Japan fit the bill. Those wheels, yeah, there is a way-cool story there to. Mario explained, “I got so lucky with those wheels. The wheels were still NEW in BOX at a wheel store in Japan. They are stamped 1983 and made by RAYS. Yeah man, those were a super lucky find.”  

The car is literally a study in ‘the details’. Everywhere you look, there is a special touch. EF9 hood, EF9 bumpers, corners, side markers, power folding mirrors. From that SiR wing to the period accordion shift boot, righteous details abound. Mario mentioned, “Yeah man most people just see and old Civic, they don’t know.” I assured him… we get it! We know what’s up and the dedication to craft that it represents.

At every step along the way, PERIOD CORRECT is the theme, and it has not only preserved this build’s value… but actually bolstered it. We don’t often give much thought to resale value, or think of our builds as assets. But Hondas of this era are proving to be this generation’s  ’57 Chevy, and it doesn’t hurt to think about this aspect on our quest to build our ultimate dream car of the ’80s today. Building a car in this manner may be the best decision Mario, or any of us could make.
