I've seen the terms andro- and gynephilia to describe attraction to men and womn (respectively) regardless of the attractee's gender. There's some utility there for discussing shared experiences, but in most contexts these terms imply exclusivity. So androphilia is useful term to describe straight women and gay men as a combined group, but you'd have pile on a bunch of caveats to get the idea across if you wanted it to also include bi folks in the combined group, so there goes the practical utility.

And it's got a darker side to it. I've seen transphobes use gynephilia to describe attraction to femininity rather than attraction to women, and thus use it to keep their straight cred without having to acknowledge that trans women are women.

for most of history, whenever there was an ostensibly "democratic" society, MOST residents of that society weren't enfranchised citizens. and even now, even in the "best"/"most free" democracies, which the US is very much not an example of, there are still systemically disenfranchised people. and in the US, republicans have spent the last decade rolling back civil rights protections specifically to make it effectively impossible for people of color, poor people, etc. to vote, a thing they worked so hard to do because they can't literally make it illegal (yet, because they're also starting to actually talk about that too).

emma goldman was a badass anarchist activist and this quote is often attributed to her but according to my googling there isn't actually a primary source that can confirm she originated the phrase. a slightly different phrasing is often attributed to Mark Twain. one source i did find suggests the earliest known example of it being used is in a newspaper opinion piece from 1976. and while i get that it matches the anarchist ethos i have trouble believing that a woman who lived through the enfranchisement of women and jim crow laws preventing the enfranchisement of black people would have actually built an argument on the premise that voter suppression and disenfranchisement isn't a thing and therefore, voting must not work. i buy that she'd argue that participating in a flawed/incomplete democratic process goes against anarchist beliefs/goals, but not that she'd be sloppy enough to base that argument on a false premise.

Sometimes you have to include problematic things to lift problematic issues. And in the context of historical fiction (and here I mean fictions based on real life historical events even if the characters might be fictional, NOT fics that take place in a setting that is inspired by history, etc) if you do it like this you might accidentally "remove" or hide what progress that was actually done at the time if you remove all the stuff that would be problematic today.

This is especially true of you include Actual. Historical. People.

Like the example above, we all know Reagan would never have respected a non-binary person's pronouns, and letting him do that in a game is giving him way too much cred. Let the man be remembered as the trash he was.

And in The Imitation Game (2014), the movie about Alan Turing (the man who cracked the nazi's code and was later prosecuted for his homosexuality which was illegal in the UK 1952) not only misrepresented his accomplishments but also painted his person as narcissistic instead of kind as he's been described as by others, the movie also pretty much accused him for being a traitor and a spy which he never was and never was even accused of.

Even if your intentions are good, removing problematic stuff would imply that the problematic thing never happened. If we look at the game with Reagan in it again, it's great that the game creators apparently decided to make it possible for people to choose how their character should be addressed as in the game and have npc:s respect that, more games need that, but to have a real life historical figure do that when he wouldn't have done that irl? I suspect it's probably because of technical limitations, so I'm not mad about it per say, but it does imply Reagan was a better person than he was. And for those who don't learn anything about him because they aren't from the US (like me), it might paint a faulty picture and that paves the way for more misinformation. Of course a game shouldn't be used as an accurate source of history, but you get my point: Good intentions can go wrong if not done with careful thought and research.

Of course if your character is completely fictional you can make them however you like! Your 1852 man can be what we would call a feminist today, that's not the issue, but he most likely wouldn't go about it like we do today or use the terms and expressions we do. Perhaps he does think it's a woman's choice of she should give birth or not, but he probably wouldn't call himself pro-choice, you know what I mean? Like...

History must be allowed to exist as it truly was back then.

There have always been people around who have had feministic views and worked for them, which is a big part of the reason society have grown to be what it is today (eg people being allowed to vote at all).

History is a lot more queer than most people think (there's a reason the song History Hates Lovers exists).

Speaking of that song though, that kinda might be another reason why people might feel iffy about the removing of "problematic" stuff in fiction (whether that removal is of eg. trans people themselves or the removal of the bigotry against them): Removing, hiding or denying parts of history have been used a lot by various groups throughout history as a means of control. One of the more famous examples was when nazis burned the library of the Institute of Sexual Science in Berlin because it 1) was founded by a Jewish person, and 2) included queer stuff. A lot of leaders all across the world had memorials and symbols etc from previous kings/religions/etc vandalised and/or suppressed to strengthen their own position — colonialism being one example. Plenty of schools around the world have banned some books because they cover subjects they don't want kids to know about or question (things that are lgbt, books about why book banning is a bad idea, books that are anti-athorian, etc etc). And as mentioned in the song, historians have often denied that romances were romances because they didn't like same sex relationships. And so on. So, like... Even if it's done in all well meaning, doing it like this might not be the best way to go about it (especially as fascists will happily be hypocritic if it means they can use it as an excuse to paint feminism and lgbtq+ etc in a bad light). So by all means do include the stuff you want to highlight in your story, but research the history well so you can back up why it makes sense in your story, and don't remove the problematic stuff if it is something that really ought to be there...

And as I mentioned in the beginning, this rant is about stories that are supposed to take place in our real world history. If it's like, a history inspired fantasy you can go shamelessly hog wild bat shit crazy. Use only neo pronouns because He and She are exclusive for the Gods or whatever reason you want to use. Piss off meninist babys by having more than five women in a story (which is like the equivalent of it being 90% women apparently) and let them have a narrative that isn't sexy eye candy fridged hottie. Have the bigots in your story be genuine asshats that don't respect pronouns and then let them fall/die in a suitable way. Or use a made up antagonists who wouldn't even consider using the wrong pronouns because they have better stuff to do than wasting energy and time on remembering a random Hero's old pronouns and name when they only needed the Hero's current ones to keep track of them. They got a world to conquer and it ain't gonna do that in its own, geez.

But yeah don't be afraid to include problematic things in your story and let it be a problematic issue. Problematic content does not automatically equal a problematic story.

Yeah. The violent "punch your local terf" thing has been around for about a decade. I don't know what exactly started it.

But my guess is that the Ronda Rousey/Fallon Fox beef was a catalyst.

Ronda was a big deal in the early 2010s. She was one of the first female UFC stars to break into mainstream pop culture. Then, in 2013, Dana White found some psychopath, turned him into Fallon Fox, and used him for manufactured UFC drama. Ronda naturally refused to fight Mr. Fox. After that, Ronda became the foremost TERF in everyone's mind. In the mid 2010s, when TRAs would explain to people what a TERF is, they'd use Ronda as the example. I know this because that's how they explained it to me back in the day.

Anyway, this was an influential event for the TRA movement. It planted a seed in the activism hivemind.

And the other factor is the other famous early 2010s TIM, Tom Gabel. Before 2012, TIMs were just stealth homosexual transexuals and suburban straight male AGP fetishists. And there was no solidarity or connection between those two groups. But then one of those suburban straight male AGP fetishists happened to be Tom Gabel. He had gone from crust punk hero to sellout supreme. He had lost all his punk cred in exchange for a white picket fence. But he found his financial success and suburban married fatherhood life boring. So becoming Laura and making transgender music was really his only option at that point. Suddenly, straight crossdressers weren't just creepy suburban men. They were punks, too.

A lot of young college students wanted to Support Trans Women so they started listening to Against Me. And basically overnight, everyone traded in their NorthFace jackets for punk denim and ACAB patches.

So Tom Gabel came out as trans in 2012. Fallon Fox came out in 2013. Tom's first trans album came out in 2014. Ronda said she'll never fight Fallon Fox in 2014. And by 2015, college kids had patches on their denim jackets that said "punch a TERF." In 2016, boxer/physicist/"TERF" Magdalen Berns started making youtube videos. And that really cemented the "punch a TERF" energy.

And that's where the modern TRA movement got its flavor from.

yes absolutely!! while dean studies is my first love i also deeply love cas analysis (casnalysis?) and wanna strive to do more of it. here’s some stuff off the top of my head:

1. gender, sexuality, heavenly embodiment

this is much more theological and less psychological than dean’s whole Deal because there’s so much fascinating stuff around how the angels in general experience express and conceptualise gender (@autisticandroids has a good post about angel gender & lily sunder has some regrets) but for cas in particular there’s this fascinating kind of collective fandom agreement (which i DO also agree with) that cas’ own gender kind of is gay man, that he actively chose gay manhood, but also that he’s kind of..... lacking the Insane Genderishness that dean exhibits at all times, even though he actively chose to engage in male gendering and became so comfortable housed Within Jimmy that he, as some post i saw the other day that i can’t find anymore said, “became his own body” when jimmy died. 

like on the one hand there’s an almost-canonical transness to the whole process but it also never feels fully written-into because 1) the supernatural writers for all their insanity are sometimes very boring and *most* of the time only feel interested in narratively expressing angels As Their Vessels anyways and just like leaving convenient spaces around these questions (boldest thing they ever did was hot girl cas which i WISH i had the range to unpack) 2) there’s a vague inevitabilist shrug to the whole thing since they obviously weren’t gonna recast misha collins (though they HAVE tried to get rid of him) and 3) something amorphous about cas’ entire..... personhood? makes him Empty Of Gender as a contrast to dean’s Full Of Gender (i believe it was @deanwinchestergender who said this) and like is it just the juxtaposition to dean/jensen’s whole insane Deal? or something else? 

like he actively chooses the terms of his own embodiment and yet narratively it feels like a shrug. and we’re all like “well obviously even though he’s a celestial being he was always a gay man” and like WHY. i love it idk idk much to think about! and yeah just in general the theological questions of possession and cas genuinely Becoming a man as he iterates himself consciously towards humanity it almost feels like. by doing the most boring things possible with his gender they made it interesting? idk if that makes sense.

2. discipline, free will, metanarratives

cas is like a tool (“i am not a hammer, as you say”) held in constant discipline and surveillance by the system that enmeshes him and it’s really, really fascinating to watch the way the angels hold each other to conformity. especially pre-god they kind of produce each other as foucauldian disciplinary subjects (which i posted about here) in perpetual visibility through angel radio, generating their own and each other’s conformity rather than being directly ruled through like a single centralised source of power. only the spectre of a god. and obviously cas’ whole thing is that he has ALWAYS disobeyed and the narrative affords him this psychological interiority never given to the foucauldian subject, an internal will and desire for freedom in a way that fits more with the liberal subject (super roughly and not with the same pro-capitalist implications but he has this internal drive for self-liberation. 

and that’s also where the metanarrative comes in ofc! i think it was @dykecas who said that cas is a real person written by people who hate him, and there’s this crack in the narrative (mirroring the crack in his chassis) where cas gets in, over and over, despite all the order imposed by the show’s authorfathergod. like we’ve all seen the analysis about how it was Never supposed to be this way they DID try to fire misha collins in 2012 and yet this gay man literally cannot be stopped! i think actually his appearance in scoobynatural is a neat little distillation of this — he drops into this animated world originally with a singular purpose (Save Sam And Dean) the same way he dropped into lazarus rising with a single 3-episode arc (Save Dean). huge hammer behaviour. his “utility” diminishes within the narrative (he finds that he can’t fly in the scooby doo universe) and so he is no longer a tool/means to an end that salvation moves Through. and in the process (and huge creds to @lesbianyuugi for this) he does something ENTIRELY unrelated to his original cas-as-tool aim, and learns, like, the meaning of laughter from shaggy and scooby. WHICH brings me onto the third point

3. love, queer kinship, family-making

HE’S GAY AND HE’S A DAD! i feel like a lot of tumblr throws around the term “found family” in a very flat and tropey way (which is fine it’s cute and fun no matter what!) but like . GOD there’s so much specific stuff going on here. like the way that cas (unintentionally) obliterates the midwestern white christian nuclear family (made incarnate in the novaks) which like could be uniformly portrayed as an act of deep malice and villainy but instead grows to serve as a surrogate (if imperfect/complex, but DEEPLY loving) father figure for the gay daughter who has now escaped that nuclear family/seen it destroyed depending on how you read it? like he remasters the entire concept of fatherhood and it’s a very interesting (if DEEPLY) unintentional subversion of the homewrecking non-nuclear gay trope. cas is so good because his character arc doesn’t say “look, gay people can be normal and have perfect settled families just like you” it says “gay people DON’T have normal settled families actually and they are full of love anyways! or Because of the abnormalcy itself!) 

to cite ziz lesbianyuugi again he DOES queer fatherhood in his parenting of jack particularly because it really is one of the ONLY parent-child relationships in the show that breaks the incessant cycle of abuse and control and cold indifference perpetuated by the authorfathergod (a cycle reified in 15x20 lol). like god’s treatment of cas and his siblings mirrors john’s treatment of sam and dean (particularly dean) mirrors victor’s treatment of krissy and her crew mirrors dean’s later treatment of jack. there is a CONSTANT reiteration of the story of authorfathergod (often a father tightly entwined in biological kinship) treating a child as a mechanism or a tool or a means to an end. and cas looks at ALL that he has suffered and all that he is ever known and chooses constantly to reject it with every piece of love he expresses for his child. and not to sound like the kind of academic people make fun of on twitter but there is an INHERENT queerness to that. gay love will pierce through [the veil of death/the thick silence of abuse/the mechanism of godly control/hegemonic american masculinity] and save the day

Gotta say, even though I'm luckily no longer living with my dad his obvious disdain for anything he either doesn't like or understand and the combination of looking for me to be his Little Him makes me want to say some really mean shit about how I'm happy that I grew out of being an inconsiderate, annoying, ableist pedant that took being an Anarchist as "his thing" so pretends that doing antifascist work irl since 2016 is nothing compared to being a programmer on Reddit that listens to Richard Wolff

Last time I visited he told a "funny anecdote" about an abusive ex who stalked his partner trying to get away from him to her jiu-jutsu gym and when my mom and I were like "hey it feels super fucking weird that your gym is allowing one of the few non-male members to feel unsafe because you're getting off on the fact that he bought a fake belt and sucks at the martial art so you can beat him easily when you're rolling" and he was like 'oh I don't get why you're mad at me for telling a story' as if it's incomprehensible that I had objections to the handling of the situation.

It's not a big leap to see that he thinks (but doesn't materially) understand/respect people who aren't cis men, but with his supposed egalitarian radical cred he can't understand that. Along with so many other aspects of actually living the reality of trying to build a non-hierarchical society, he can't wrap his head around why I drove myself into the ground picking up the slack on household maintenance tasks (dishes, laundry, folding/sorting, pest control wrt. food sources for bugs being cleaned up, sweeping, wiping down the kitchen, etc.) when it took my mom getting *literally fucking paralyzed with a neurological disorder* to do any daily household tasks with any regularity and talking shit about me for "being so hard on my siblings" when I had to pick up their slack every couple days without fail.

Really glad that he constantly belittles me while misgendering me, my long-term partner, and my younger sibling's partner, combined with my mother who built her identity around being "gay and trans friendly" but makes every conversation I start about how it feels shitty that my dad still conceives of trans people as their agab even if he hadn't met them before they came out as just "having a hard time like I am, why do you have to be so difficult to talk to."
