summary:

Nicholas "Nickie" Routledge is John B's twin brother—but it hadn't always been that way. When Nickie came out as trans in middle school it send John B's protective instincts into overdrive. And caused their best friend JJ Maybank to question his sexuality. Nickie and JJ have been together for a long time now. But with John B's death, they find their relationship strained.

ONE : LOST AT SEA

SIX MONTHS AGO

“Where the hell is he?” JJ groaned. “He has my lunch money.”

“Why would you give Nickie your lunch money?” Kie asked.

JJ looked up at her, head resting on the table. “I’m very irresponsible, Kie.”

Nickie’s words not his. JJ probably would have spent it on weed and stolen half of Nickie’s meal. He wouldn’t have minded. It’s what they’d done since elementary school.

Pope returned to their lunch table in the corner of the cafeteria. He sat down, backpack still on.

“He’s not here. I checked every single bathroom--I had to beg people to check the girls rooms as a last resort. The locker rooms, the art rooms, the science lab. He’s straight up, not here.”

“Would he have gone to the guidance counselor,” Kie suggested. Perhaps hopeful.

JJ laughs, sitting back. “Good joke.”

Nickie was very adamant in his dislike towards counselors, therapists--people in that general category. When he was younger he got bullied pretty bad for coming out as trans and the middle school counselors suggested it was simply a phase. Suggested stepping back into the closet.

Since then, Nickie has felt nothing but hatred for counselors.

“John B probably picked him up, right?” Pope tried to rationalize, pulling out his phone.

It wasn’t like Nickie to skip or anything like that. This is one of the few places Nickie and John B differed. Nickie wanted to get into a good school, get out of OBX and save up for all the surgeries he wanted.

Maybe he was just having a bad day. It was bound to happen--their dad was lost out at sea.

Presumed dead, technically, but neither John B or Nickie seemed to agree with that. They refused to believe it.

It was harder on Nickie than he ever really let on. Only two people in the whole world had seen how hard it hit him. John B and JJ.

John B because...well, they were brothers and they were stupid close.

JJ because they’d been together for a long time.

It had all started when Nickie came out to him. He just nodded, said cool and half understood what it meant. He had to look some stuff up later on his phone to really know what Nickie had been saying. He hadn’t cared, it wasn’t a big deal and didn’t change anything, but...why did it make JJ feel weird?

At first he thought he hated Nickie for being trans, but no. That couldn't have been farther from the truth. It had been those pesky feelings he’d been denying because John B was his best friend and he didn’t want to be in love with his best friend's twin.

What confused him most was how those feelings didn’t change when Nickie came out. If anything, they got stronger.

It was how JJ came out as bisexual in middle school.

An interesting discovery for everyone that year.

JJ had seen Nickie at his worst. That included the aftermath of the disappearance when John B was pushing Nickie away in his grief. The younger twin turned to his boyfriend, who until then hadn’t seen the boy cry in the eight years they’d known each other.

It was still hard several months later, especially after their uncle went on ahead with a proper funeral despite both twins living in denial. (And their uncle running off to god knows what state shortly after.)

“Hey JB, it’s Pope,” Pope said into his phone, pulling JJ from his thoughts. “Well, actually, we thought he was with you. He isn’t here. At all.”

The table is silent with anticipation.

“You don’t know where--Yeah, yeah, okay.”

Pope hung up the phone, looking up at his friends.

“John B is coming by. We’re gonna go look for him. Did you try texting him, JJ?” Pope asked, looking across the table at the blonde.

JJ nodded. “Three texts. Hasn’t even read them.”

“He’s always on his phone,” Kie muttered. “Especially if you’re texting.”

JJ’s ear turned red at the tips. “He's surfing,” JJ said the moment it hit him. Nickie always responded—unless he was surfing.

Surfing had become a lot more exciting for Nickie after Kie bought him a bathing suit meant for trans guys. Before that he tended to avoid it. Now they couldn't keep the kid out of the ocean.

“He's surfing,” he repeats.

“The oceans are freezing this time of year. He's so stupid sometimes “ Kie groaned, slinging her bag over her shoulder. “John B’s gonna kill him.”

Nickie had come out here to surf.

He, instead, found himself rolling a joint and staring out at the ocean.

Distantly he could hear the laughter of tourists. God they were annoying. They didn't even go in the water because it was too cold.

Not that Nickie blamed them. He was sitting in a hoodie and shorts, the wind and overcast day making it very cool.

He looked at the surfboard next to him, tears blurring his vision. It was the one he and his dad made together.

It was special.

He’s not even sure why he’s here. Why didn't he call John B or ask his boyfriend to ditch with him?

The world felt like too much today.

His counselor tells him that if he fails gym class, he fails the year. Nickie had simply glared, refusing to show how upset he was about it.

He was failing gym because he got terrorized in the locker rooms. He couldn't do it. So he skipped, smoked out back with JJ and lied when John B asked about it.

He’s absolutely livid.

The world is constantly working against him.

A month before he's supposed to start hormones, his dad vanishes. Then he’s still gone and now there's definitely no way Nickie can rationalize the extra money for it.

He's furious.

He doesn't remember the last time he cried, but it feels good to let it out now. He ducks his head to his knees and just cries.

It's silent, it’s painful. It's fucking ugly.

“Nick,” a voice says, causing him to jump and scramble for his pocket knife. His head snaps up and he sees John B crouched next to him. “Easy, bubs. It's just me.”

Nickie relaxes ever so slightly. He looks back out at the water.

“Not in the mood to surf,” John B asks, eyeing the board.

“Forgot my suit,” he admits.

“Damn. Those waves look amazing,” John B says.

Nickie just nods.

“Why are you out here then?”

“Got upset. Ran. Nothing new,” he sighed. “I’m failing gym class.”

“How do you fail gym?” John B turned to look at his brother.

“By smoking outside with JJ instead of going,” Nickie offered.

There's silence. John B’s waiting for more details, Nickie knows. He hesitates to give it to him.

But he does, he cries and tells his brother about the locker rooms and how the school did nothing. He cries and his brother holds him.

“I’ve got you,” John B whispers. “I'm always here.”

Always. Such a long time.

Once Nickie has calmed down, John B pulls back. “By the way, your boyfriend is beside himself in the car. Worrying himself to death.”

Nickie laughed softly, brushing sand off of him as he stood. He grabbed the board and together the brothers made their way back to the car.

JJ nearly tripped over himself, climbing out to greet Nickie. He fussed over the smaller boy, making sure he was okay before helping him mount the board on top of the van.

Everyone climbed in the car. John B caught his brother's eyes as he settled in.

He meant what he said.

Rudy’s boyfriend is having a bad day with self image and he’s there to make it better.

He knew as soon as he took in the sight of his boyfriend that it was a bad day. He’d just come in from going to the grocery store, knowing if he went early he had less of a chance of being recognized. Wyatt had still been in bed when he left, but he now sat on the sofa hugging his knees. Rudy frowned to himself as he put the groceries away, making a cup of tea for his boyfriend and walking into the living room. He perched himself on the other end of the sofa, offering the cup to his boyfriend with a soft smile.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” His voice was barely above a whisper. Wyatt shook his head with whispered no. Rudy knew better than that though. They’d been together a long time, seven years to be exact. Wyatt had moved to LA with him, long before he was Wyatt and they were masked as a young, heteronormative couple.

They’d lived together like that for nearly three years before the truth came out, though Rudy wasn’t blind to signs beforehand. It’d started with him being more comfortable in Rudy’s clothes, or men's clothes in general. Then, slowly, feminine smelling bath products turned into shared shampoo and conditioner, body wash even. Finally, on his twenty-first birthday he came home with a short, undercut styled hair cut. Rudy knew, but he never pushed, and his love for the person he was in a relationship with didn’t change.

It was a cold December morning when Rudy woke up to him in tears. Rudy had wrapped his arms around him and told him that he loved him and nothing changed and they could talk about it when he was ready. It was that morning that Wyatt told him the truth: he felt like a man, and he had always felt that way but was afraid to act on it because of his religious family. He’d asked Rudy to call him by his new name, Wyatt, and Rudy didn’t miss a beat. He fell into the new name immediately, only slipping up once or twice.

In the four years since Wyatt had come out, Rudy was sure he was going to marry him. He’d come out to his family, who surprisingly took it well. Rudy could vividly remember Wyatt’s mom hugging him and saying “I know, honey, I’ve known for a while but it wasn’t my place to bring it up.”

Since Rudy had blown up on the internet after the release of Outer Banks, Wyatt’s Instagram had blown up too, as the blonde man tagged him in several posts. Rudy knew that yesterday before bed, Wyatt had posted a photo without a shirt on. It clearly showed the scars from his top surgery, so he had an idea of what happened. It only took him 30 seconds on Instagram as they sat there in silence to figure out he was right.

“Hey.” Rudy’s voice was soft as he looked over to his boyfriend. When Wyatt looked over at him, he patted his lap as if silently telling him to come here. Soon enough, the darker haired boy was straddling the blonde, looking defeated. Rudy smiled softly, pulling him down to press their lips together. His fingers tugged at the hem of the oversized hoodie his boyfriend was wearing.

“Arms up.” Rudy told him as he lifted the hoodie over Wyatt’s head, tossing it to the other side of the couch. His fingers traced the scars lightly, feeling the still raised, dark pink flesh on his boyfriend's chest.

“They’re all wrong, Wy.” He murmured. “All of them. You’re stunning, beautiful. These scars make you who you are. I love them so much. I love you so much.” His lips moved down to kiss his scars gently.

“They don’t know what they’re talking about, baby.” His kisses continued. “But I do. Because I get to love you and your perfect body everyday. Forever, if you want. Just wanna keep loving you.”

“Forever, huh?” Wyatt’s voice almost surprised Rudy, being the first time he’d really talked that day. Rudy hummed, smashing their lips together again.

“Forever, baby. Want to buy a house with you out of the city. Adopt a bunch of kids or dogs or whatever you want. Want to have the big wedding with all our family and friends, the important people. Wanna show you off as my man instead of my roommate. If you’re ready for that.” He said.

“I’m nervous” Wyatt told him. “You’re gonna get so much hate, baby. Being in a same sex relationship.” Rudy let out a breathy laugh.

“Let them hate, baby. I love you. I’ve loved you for seven years. I had the honor of knowing before you were you, I got to watch you become you. I told you four years ago when you told me who you were, nothing changed and I love you. I promise that is still going strong. I love you my beautiful, gorgeous boy.” He said.

Once they’d both calmed down from the impromptu make out session on the couch. They settled cuddled up together, random moving playing on Netflix. Rudy was on his phone, typing an Instagram post: a picture of him and Wyatt on the beach last week, Wyatt’s lips pressed against Rudy’s cheek.

You knocked on the door, John B opened it.

"Hi, I uh- I'm looking for JJ,"

"Oh, he's in the back fixing his bike," he let you inside the house.

You awkwardly walked to the other door, as you walked to the backyard, regret hit you.

No, it wasn't a good idea to come here. No, you shouldn't be here, yet you were.

"JJ," you made the blonde boy turn around.

"Y/N, hi," he tossed a towel behind his shoulder, "What are you doing here?" He crossed his arms over his bare chest.

You and JJ met over two months ago, both of your friends always seemed to go to the same places, so you got to know him after both groups decided to talk one night. Three weeks ago you hooked up, and now you were knocked up. You wore a condom, just to be clear.

"I'm here because I have to tell you something," you scratched your neck.

"Is everything okay?"

"Well, depends on how you wanna see it," you confessed.

He frowned.

"I'm pregnant," you spat.

He widened his eyes as he stared at you coldly.

"But I'm not having the baby,"

He sighed relieved, "For god's sake Y/N, don't play with me like that,"

"Well, we're here," JJ stopped the car.

"Oh, boy," You squinted her eyes at the sight of women and men who were protesting outside the clinic.

"Hey, I'll punch every single one of them out of the way if I need to," JJ placed his hand on your knee.

You got out of the car, he interlaced your fingers with his and sighed before starting to walk. The small crowd began to invade you with every stupid argument they could come up with. Their lack of empathy of a sixteen-year-old girl who wasn't in the position to have a kid astonish you, you used a condom but had bad luck, you weren't irresponsible or stupid, it just happened. You weren't religious, so you couldn't care less if they told you that Jesus wasn't gonna love you anymore; you didn't have a lot of sexual experiences and so they had no idea of what they were saying when they called you a whore. A guy tried to grasp your arm and so JJ had to pull you closer to him to protect you.

You entered the place and a woman immediately received you.

"Sorry you had to go through that," she scorted the both of you to a chair, "They call themselves Christians, the children of God; but they're just a bunch of racists, homophobic and transphobic hypocrites," she rolled her eyes.

You felt safe with her words.

"So, which one of you will get the abortion? I'm asking because we recently got a pregnant trans man,"

"She is," JJ pointed at the girl.

"What's your name?"

"Y/N Ruiz,"

The woman checked through the screen of a tablet, "Oh, here you are Miss Ruiz, seems like you're right on time for your appointment," she smiled at you, "Doctor Jones will do your procedure, come with me so we can prepare you,"

You nodded and saw the blonde boy.

"I'll wait for you here, okay? I won't go," he kissed your hand before you left his sight.

As you moved towards the lobby, your eyes were greeted by a nervous Blonde boy walking in circles with two ice creams in his hands, a white rose, and a red box. When your eyes met him, he giggled happily and gave you everything he had in his hands.

"I know it may be a little too much, but I didn't know what else to give you, to be honest, I didn't know if it was right to give you anything at all. I decided to just buy the most basic stuff, sorry if it's awkward or-"

"JJ," you interrupted him, "It's perfect, besides you got my favorite ice cream flavor,"

"Well, I remember you ordered it when we all went to the beach for the millionth time,"

You chuckled before going out again. This time you ran toward the van as fast as possible. Once you closed the door, you looked at each other as if you just won a war.

"So, should I take you to your house," He started the engine.

"No, how about we just go to the beach and enjoy the icecream?"

"Sure, we can watch the sunset there,"

You opened the window and breathed the tropical air, you watched the trees pass by and took your hand out just to have more sensibility of the environment.

"JJ, can I ask you something?"

"Mhm," his eyes were glued to the road.

"What would you've done if I'd decided to have the baby?"

"I would get a job or two, I mean, I had to support you whatever your choice was," he turned to see you.

You smiled brightly at him.
