TOMAX: So are you down to stay for a little bit longer and hang out or is the social battery dead and you wanna call it a night? I know it's not far or anything, but I could walk you back.

DAMIEN: [He smiles a little bit awkwardly and nervously.] As long as I don't have to go back over there and act like nothing happened and everything's cool, I could stay for a little bit.

TOMAX: Speaking just for myself, I wouldn't be caught dead over there. I mean Mitchell's really cool and gets along with pretty much everybody and Marcus is a good guy, but having to play nice with Cuntington, Sergio the Crypto Bro and Perpetual Senior Lothario that should have graduated and got a job three years ago but keeps postponing his exit exams so he can mooch off his frat brothers instead… Yeah, don't have the mental stamina for that right now. Or… ever. [He grins.] I'll leave that to my friend Grace, she's a lot more diplomatically tactful.

DAMIEN: Is that uh, a subtly critical way of saying she puts up with way too much bullshit or a really nice way of saying you and I are assholes?

TOMAX: [He laughs.] It's not asshole behavior to avoid hanging out with people you don't like… How'd you get roped into that scene anyway? Did you think it was gonna be a lot different or —?

DAMIEN: Heard a very compelling argument that getting in good with the VP of Pi Rho would help me out with Blazeball, that's pretty much the only reason I'm there. That and … [He shrugs, rubbing the back of his neck.] Ethan and I never really do anything alone so, he wanted to check it out and I said okay. Truth be told, I don't think he's having the best time either.

TOMAX: Mmhmm. Then why's he still hanging out with them and you're over here?

DAMIEN: I'm on Friend Time-Out right now [he sighs.] — he's gonna be stewing for a while that I walked off before he could smooth it all over and won't talk to me at all until he's ready to go home. I didn't do it to be a dick or anything, I just… needed to get away from there before it got really bad and something ended up on fire. It hasn't even been a full day here and the last thing I need is my mom getting letters from the Sages already about destruction of university property and some douchebag being confined to a burn unit in the infirmary. [He smirks.]

Let's recap my day so far (it's not even lunch time):

I got woken (again) (as per fucking usual) by the road works outside the house (as opposed to the endless construction next door) (no it doesn't make for a nice change)

Spent half an hour stewing in dysphoria (it makes me miserable that my doctor refuses to prescribe progesterone) (other doctors in this city do) (you can get fined for importing it without a prescription I checked) before getting up

At the California Institute of the Arts, it all started with a videoconference between the registrar’s office and a nonprofit.

One of the nonprofit’s representatives had enabled an AI note-taking tool from Read AI. At the end of the meeting, it emailed a summary to all attendees, said Allan Chen, the institute’s chief technology officer. They could have a copy of the notes, if they wanted — they just needed to create their own account.

Next thing Chen knew, Read AI’s bot had popped up inabout a dozen of his meetings over a one-week span. It was in one-on-one check-ins. Project meetings. “Everything.”

The spread “was very aggressive,” recalled Chen, who also serves as vice president for institute technology. And it “took us by surprise.”

The scenariounderscores a growing challenge for colleges: Tech adoption and experimentation among students, faculty, and staff — especially as it pertains to AI — are outpacing institutions’ governance of these technologies and may even violate their data-privacy and security policies.

That has been the case with note-taking tools from companies including Read AI, Otter.ai, and Fireflies.ai.They can integrate with platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teamsto provide live transcriptions, meeting summaries, audio and video recordings, and other services.

Higher-ed interest in these products isn’t surprising.For those bogged down with virtual rendezvouses, a tool that can ingest long, winding conversations and spit outkey takeaways and action items is alluring. These services can also aid people with disabilities, including those who are deaf.

But the tools can quickly propagate unchecked across a university. They can auto-join any virtual meetings on a user’s calendar — even if that person is not in attendance. And that’s a concern, administrators say, if it means third-party productsthat an institution hasn’t reviewedmay be capturing and analyzing personal information, proprietary material, or confidential communications.

“What keeps me up at night is the ability for individual users to do things that are very powerful, but they don’t realize what they’re doing,” Chen said. “You may not realize you’re opening a can of worms.“

The Chronicle documented both individual and universitywide instances of this trend. At Tidewater Community College, in Virginia, Heather Brown, an instructional designer, unwittingly gave Otter.ai’s tool access to her calendar, and it joined a Faculty Senate meeting she didn’t end up attending. “One of our [associate vice presidents] reached out to inform me,” she wrote in a message. “I was mortified!”

They're trying to make you more scared to be yourself, and I'm saying protect yourselves first. Make sure you are safe and that is the key thing. You can fight after you're safe, okay? And there is a whole community out there rooting for you.

When they're getting close, it's very evident, the tower of water rising up into the atmosphere before them, and Pearl's driving at that point, but she asks Amethyst to go to the roof and make sure Valor and Flicker are awake.

Pearl winces slightly at how loud her voice echoes around them, and Steven tries to deescalate things, but it doesn't work, and Lapis sends out water duplicates of him and the other Crystal Gems, and Pearl summons her spear.

❝Fight it is.❞ She shifts into a fighting stance. ❝Valor or Flicker, could you fly Steven up to the top of this? I assume that's where she is, and if he heals her, she might be more reasonable. And aggressive or not, I don't want her to shatter incidentally in her state.❞

Both of the grimwalkers grimaced. "That sounds very unfun," Flicker agreed.

They still had a long ride ahead of them. Valor and Flicker swapped between their staffs and the top of the van every so often, and Valor took the chance to try to get a bit more sleep, using his sibling as a pillow on the roof of the van. He knew they'd keep watch for him should anything dangerous happen.

That wasn't to say his sleep was uninterrupted. He was a light sleeper as it was, so he woke up often between conversation and bumps in the ocean floor and Flicker shifting into better positions. But he fell back asleep quickly, so taken altogether he managed another hour or two of sleep.

That wasn't an unusual sleep pattern for him, getting less-than-optimal sleep at night and making up for it in several catnaps throughout the day, when there were the sounds of his family's activities to keep the bad thoughts and nightmares at bay.

Usually it wasn't on top of a car, though.

Once they got close, though, he made sure to be alert, preparing himself for whatever they might encounter.

With a snap of his fingers the air before him splits. I-prime reaches into the crack between two universes and retrieves his sniper rifle. He looks down its sights, out the window, down the gleaming street.

Someone approaches the door to the club. A tall, svelt man with a face that I-prime is so sick of seeing other people wear.

I wonder what this one's named, I-prime muses as he lines up the shot.

Izaak? Ignacius? Indigo?

As he pulls the trigger on himself from another life, I-prime knows it doesn't matter what this alternate is called.

He lost track of their names a long time ago.
