Look. You can’t NOT love Alice. It’s basically illegal. She’ll be the first to tell you so, actually. I didn’t expect to love her as much as I do, let alone for her to be the first Protocol character I crocheted, but here we are. I’m working my ass off to get her done before the next mid-season hiatus, but we’ll see; I’m writing this paragraph after having only finished the first leg. Goddamn does she need a hug, though. [Crafter’s note: Not only did I finish her in time for the public release of Episode 20, I finished her in time for Pride Night at the local ballpark, so go me.]

I wasn’t entirely sure how I was going to do her, actually; the podcast is still relatively new and we don’t know anything about her physically other than that she’s trans, so I’m still getting an idea in my head for how she looks. Or I thought I was. But as I crocheted, a design…emerged. She differs from the base pattern as follows:

Shoes: I decided to give Alice sandals. (Was I thinking of a clip I saw from an old game of Super Password where the clue someone gave was “those ugly shoes that lesbians wear” and the other person immediately got that the answer was “Birkenstocks”? Mmmmaybe.) They…didn’t turn out necessarily as well as I’d hoped, but they work. Sort of. Anyway, I stitched two stitches in the brown on either side of the toe, then at the top of the foot did an ankle strap to tie it all together. Should have given her painted toenails, in retrospect, but eh…

Leggings: Alice’s attire could go two ways, in my mind. She could wear neat, tailored, neutral-colored business attire at all opportunities, or she could be an OH THANK GOD THERE ARE ACTUAL COLOR OPTIONS IN MY CLOTHING kind of trans woman, and frankly I crochet enough neutral business suits. Besides, she very much gives off “what are you gonna do, fire me?” vibes, so she’s not going to worry about if there’s a dress code in the office. So, bright green leggings! I gave her a row of skin between the ankles and the leggings, but other than that they’re done exactly like Joseph’s pants.

Tunic: Okay, it’s somewhere between a tunic and a dress, but whatever. I did R36 in the front loops of R35, then R37 in the back loops of R36, then continued the same as normal for the upper torso. I did give her a little bit of a V-neck in the last couple rounds. The hem was done as follows: R1: Join yarn to middle back of R36, ch 1, sc in each front loop around, sl st in first sc (36 sc). R2-3: Ch 1, [sc in first 6 st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, trc in next st, dtrc in next st, trc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 5 st] 2 times, sl st in first sc (22 sc, 4 hdc, 4 dc, 4 trc, 2 dtrc). R4: Ch 1, sc in first 9 st, hdc in next st, sc in next 17 st, hdc in next st, sc in next 8 st, sl st in first sc (34 sc, 2 hdc). R5: [Sl st in first 9 st, ch 1, dc in next st, ch 1, sl st in next 7 st] 2 times. Fasten off.

Head: I caved. I didn’t want to bother with the fur stitch, so instead I just stitched her scalp on as normal and then went back and used the loop method to hook in individual colors. On the other hand, doing it that way meant I could give her some funky stripes in her hair, so I gave her a purple streak because why the fuck not. I also gave her ears so her glasses would stay on. Basically, I did two chains on either side of the head to anchor them, then did three hdcs in each ch, then sl st the outside edges and joined the lobes to the head. (Also, just as a side note - the mouth is technically the same yarn as the rest of Alice; it’s the Michaels store brand, essentially. They rebranded their yarn a couple months back.)

Arms: I was trying to give her bell sleeves, but I don’t think they turned out quite the way I had them in mind. Anyway, I worked her arms in the skin color up to R12, then switched to the tunic color and did R13 in front loops only, R14 in back loops only, and continued up the arm. Once they were done, I went back to R13, joined the yarn back onto the loop, and: R1: Ch 1, sc in front loop of each st around, sl st in first sc (12 sc). R2: Ch 1, sc in first 2 st, hdc in next 2 st, dc in next 4 st, hdc in next 2 st, sc in next 2 st, sl st in first sc (4 sc, 4 hdc, 4 dc). R3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (12 sc).

Glasses: They’re…wobblier than I would have liked, but that’s just because I was working with the wire for the first time and I kinda cut it shorter than I should have. (I wanted them to be square.) Anyway, I had skimmed a book of various doll parts that I will likely be obtaining at some point (it had a pattern for a wheelchair in it even!), and its suggestion for glasses was to make them out of wire and then wrap them in embroidery floss. I’m not sure what happened to my embroidery floss, but I have lots and lots of crochet thread handy leftover from last year’s still unfinished whoops shut up temperature blanket, so I grabbed one at random. It happened to be Wasabi, so Alice has green glasses and y’all are just going to have to live with that.

THE COLOR PURPLE ;; the whole book

how does celie come to get married? Mr. _____ comes around and tries to marry her younger sister, Nettie. Celie thinks that her sister marrying him would be a good thing because it would get her away from their father who has been raping Celie, but their father forbids it and, instead, offers him Celie. At first, Mr. _____ isn’t happy with this second offer, but finally comes around. what do celie and mr. ___ tell harpo to do to get sofia to listen to him? how does this turn out? Physical violence! (wow so great!) They both think that Sofia gets away with way too much and that Harpo basically needs to show her who is boss. Sofia, however, does not take this lying down and when Harpo tries to smack her around, she beats him up. what happens when sofia meets the mayor and his wife? Sofia is driving around with her children and Buster. The mayor’s wife happens by and starts fawning over Sofia’s children. The woman tells Sofia that her children are so clean and maybe Sofia would like to work for her. To which Sofia responds, "Hell no." The mayor gets angry and slaps Sofia and so she assaults the mayor and then she ends up in jail. what is Shug’s surprise? Mr.__ thinks she’s bringing a car for him because she’s making "big money" now. When Shug comes, it turns out she brings a "skinny big toof man wearing red suspenders"—her new husband. His name is Grady. Shug also brings a car, but she said she bought it as a wedding present for herself and Grady. (So not a surprise that either Mr. _____ or Celie were hoping for). how does celie get a letter from nettie? what does it say? After telling Shug about her sister, Shug asks if Nettie might be living somewhere far away? She says she’s seen Mr. _____ get letters with weird stamps on them that he will just pocket. So, now knowing this, Shug gets one from him and gives it to Celie. Her letter says that she wants Celie to know that Nettie isn’t dead. She assumes that Mr. ______ has been keeping her letters from her. She wants Celie to know that she’s coming home soon … and that she’s bringing Celie’s children with her! what has nettie been up to? After being thrown out of Mr. ________’s house, Nettie ends up at the Reverend's place and recognized his daughter as Celie’s child, Olivia. She stays with them: the family is very religious and good to her. Nettie ends up going with them to Africa, as they are missionaries. • She’s learning so much she never knew before. For example, that Africa had great cities long before Atlanta existed. And that Africans sold their brothers and sisters. She realizes how ignorant she used to be. Corrine and Samuel are apparently wonderful people. They have a great marriage and they are so grateful to God for sending them Olivia and Adam. Nettie admits that Olivia and Adam are definitely Celie’s children. She assures Celie that the children are well cared for. how do the men in olinka remind nettie of her father? The men’s treatment of the woman mostly - they think of them entirely as less than. They speak to them only to give instructions and the woman aren’t even allowed to make eye contact with them!! They do not think that the woman should be educated — and the reverend and his family are scolded when it becomes known that they were trying to teach Olivia’s friend. what does the road mean for the people of olinka? When the road reached the Olinka village, the villagers assume that the road is for them and hold a celebration feast. Turns out, though, that the road isn’t done yet and is supposed to continue right through the village, and right through Catherine’s field. The villagers are really mad, but the road-builders have guns and are supposed to shoot if the villagers resist. The church, school, and missionary huts are torn down within hours to make way for the road. The Olinka chief sets out to complain and try to get reparations. However, all he returns with is bad news: The Olinka village and the surrounding area now belongs to an English rubber-manufacturing company. The Olinka now have to pay rent to live in their village and pay a tax to use the water. The villagers have rebuilt the school, church, and destroyed huts and are waiting to see what will happen now. how did samuel and corinne come to adopt olivia and adam? Samuel reveals how he got the children to begin with, from a shady character he’d known before he became a religious man. This man—Celie and Nettie’s Pa—turns out not to really be their father after all. He’s their stepfather. Their real father owned a successful store but was lynched by white folks who were angry that he was taking away so many of their customers. Apparently, after their real father was murdered, their mother kind of lost it. The neighbors had to keep bringing over food to feed young Celie and Nettie. Then a stranger came into town and married Celie and Nettie’s mother. The woman was pregnant every year from then on. According to Samuel’s story, the woman (Nettie and Celie’s mom), had two children just before she died that she was unable to care for—Olivia and Adam. Samuel never told Corrine about how he got the children, they just considered the kids gifts from God. Samuel says that when Nettie showed up, he assume that his ex-friend ("Pa") had been messing around with a young girl and that Nettie was the kids’ real mom. That’s why he so willingly took her in. shug and celie have a discussion about what god looks like. what is your god like? Not going to lie — I don’t exactly have the words to currently answer this question! This is something I’m going to need to think about more, before I answer. how does celie start to provide for herself when she’s with shug? She started making and selling pants. do you have any thoughts or comments on how the women’s relationships with one another in this book help them to face their struggles? It’s VERY clear by the first page that men hold all the power and women have to decide whether to try to fiercely (and sometimes unsuccessfully) fight against their men or to be completely trampled on. The only ones who can easily stand up for themselves are women like Shug who are financially independent. However, the women in this novel have found strength in numbers!!!! And it gets better for them when they stand together and learn to stick up for themselves — the men loosing their power because the women refuse to abide by it.

I forgot to put in my retainer but that led me to the headcanon that Gansey had braces/ Invisalign/ rich people teeth correction once and now wears a retainer at night. he manages to hide it for a while but when the gangsey inevitably find out they all think it’s dorky but oddly endearing

Have an out-of-context frame from an animation I started like forever ago. I’m probably going to redo this, because my coloring style has changed and such, but this was the first and only time I’ve ever really done lineless art so I figured I’d upload this before I completely redo it.

There are a few mistakes in here that I need to fix (this also might have been created before I started to flip the canvas to check for issues) but I think this is still pretty decent at least. And yes I’m aware his eye color is wrong. I don’t know why I chose to keep it grey/black. Maybe for emotion (or lack thereof), but I’ll have to see if I can make it work with his actual eye color once i get there.

Q3 :  Why did you start writing this character?          

A3 :   There’s no easier way to put this- I wrote Haine to be a better version of myself 10+ years ago. Haine has existed in several universes, led so many lives, and has so many stories to tell. She is my pride and joy in the writing I love. In FFXIV, Haine has taken her own path that separates from me, and I’m happy about it. I had already grown to be strong like her. 

Q4 :   What first attracted you to this character?          

A4 : Haine is my go to in every new thing I dive into. She’s my comfort pick that evolves and continues to remain the most complex thing I create. She never grows old for me, and I just love her. The only thing similar each time she is reborn? Her lavender hair. 

Q5 :  Describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse.

A5 : Hrm.. I would have to say her fickle attitude towards people. It makes some match-ups hard. She can either be loving and welcoming if her heart is provoked, or she can be a viper. My child is just angry, it’s nothing personal. 

Q6 :  What do you have in common with your muse?          

A6 : Haine and I share the ability to be empathetic. It can be the one way to feel, and the main way to understand. See past the lines and feel what the other feels. Be what you need to. 

Q7 :   How does  your muse feel about  you?          

A7 :  Haine probably feels proud, but annoyed with me. I think my muse is still the personification of strength in several ways. She would probably criticize me for the moments I falter, but encourage me more than anything to keep going. 

Q8 :  What characters does your muse have interesting interactions with ?        

A8 : Haine has had quite a few interesting interactions. There are characters that bring out her best- and characters that bring out her worst. It’s fun to me to see how she is influenced as a true neutral character and how morally grey she can be. 

Q9 :  What gives  you inspiration  to write  your muse ?        

A9 :  A lot of music ranging from piano, violin, or OSTs from movies. Deep characters with complex emotions. 

Q10 : How long did this take you to complete ?          

A10 : I started this probably... four days ago? I got sick, and this was sitting in my drafts. I’m still sick, but I figured I might as well kick this out the door.
