HI IM also in the process of reading trigun & was just looking at how inconveniently posted the overhaul chapters are, how much would I have to pay you to share the combined pdf versions of Maximum? 👀

Isn't it so annoying?? Like I appreciate the work they put into it and all but pls.... Pdfs...

I tried to make it as vague as possible so there wouldn't be spoilers, I've watched all of '98 and read trimax as well as watched some of stampede so there's a little bit of each version

Please feel free to pick any for your own enjoyment, they should work for any version though I think it would be best for trimax bc trimax just has more content. Also the quotes are from the dub versions and the "trigun ultimate overhaul project" so if you're not watching/reading those good luck lol.

so I'm re-reading the manga (Dark Horse and Overhaul translations side-by-side jsyk) along with @trigunbookclub and, as I was going through ch 7 of Trigun Maximum vol 4...something struck me.

"I will send Knives to Hell" - up to this point in the manga, Vash has consistently cited that as his ultimate goal, yeah? off the top of my head, I remember him saying as such as early as ch 1 of Trigun vol 2.

which is. interesting. bc so far, Knives is the ONLY person we've seen Vash express REAL, PERSISTENT DESIRE to KILL. and call me Captain Obvious, but doesn't that go against, like...Vash's whole-ass thing??? as he says in ch 7 of Trigun vol 1:

which begs the question, Vash: what about Knives' life?

Knives (albeit indirectly) killed Rem. Vash wants to get revenge and kill Knives - even though it goes directly against what Vash promised Rem. that tells me that Vash, too, fundamentally misunderstands Rem's sacrifice. see, Rem's decision to stay behind and die doing what she could to make sure at least some of those in cold sleep would survive the Fall? it could've partially been about the survival of the species, sure. makes sense. but first and foremost, it was an act of love.

neither Knives NOR Vash has a healthy idea of what it means to love - and we see that in the terrible ways they live for each other. everything Knives does, he does with the ultimate goal of creating a world that's safe for him and Vash - even if it means working with the humans he so hates, even if it means trying to force Vash to join him. meanwhile, Vash willingly, even intentionally suffers extensive harm over the years at the hands of humans because ultimately, the only person he's set on killing is Knives. like...despite everything he says and does, it's not really about wanting to protect humans - it all comes down to getting revenge. Vash lives to kill Knives. because Knives killed someone Vash loves.

so. yeah. both Knives' AND Vash's respective ideas of love are fundamentally flawed, and their stories (individually AND together) hinge on how they navigate that.

that being said, please give me around two days to a month to get to your request. i promise i am writing them, i just get distracted by life as we all do. as much as i'd like to be chronically online, sadly i am an adult who actually needs to adult.

and yes yes, of course!! trigun has an original manga where both the 98 and new one (stampede) adapted from.

there's trigun, the first manga, which has two volumes and sets up the main story, and then trigun maximum (also known as trimax) is the sequel containing the main story with its 14 volumes. all together, it's about 117 chapters! i recommend reading it greatly because it helped me understand the rest of the adaptions a lot better and also, it's the original completed story that has incredible messages and themes. nightow's art is also just fantastic and vashwood's relationship in trimax is my favorite ever. their dynamic and love blossoms in ways that is unique to the time and events of trimax and it's the most beautiful and heart wrenching depiction of their relationship.

HOWEVER, the original manga also consists of a lot of graphic stuff, i think there was a better list on twitter, but this site has most of the notable triggering mentions. i'd recommend looking at that before diving into the manga in case there are content you're not comfortable with seeing!

the other is trigun: badlands rumble, which is about an hour ish long movie released in 2010. it's a fun little one-off and is just entertaining more than anything! it also has like the funniest depiction of vashwood imo, they are so divorced in that movie, it's hilarious.

i believe during the dvd release, they also came out with a trigun anthology called trigun: multiple bullets and it's a bunch of one-shots drawn by various mangakas, including the artist for dr. stone. you can read it here, also from ultimate overhaul! the ones i like the most from the anthology are chapter 1-2 and chapter 5, but finishing the manga is necessary for chapter 5 in case u don't want spoilers!!!

It had been a long time since they last saw Rem.

Humans dressed in white with cold stares and invasive touches were all the twins knew now. That, and the feel of cold steel poking into their veins, sharp blades splitting flesh from bone. The bright lights in the clinic were blinding, obscuring the faces gathered around the table where they bled under cruel, uncaring hands.

Vash and Nai were connected mentally somehow, perhaps a successful past experiment, or an underlying plant power that was able to link the independent siblings.

Nai was being released back into his tank beside his own, but Vash could still feel the way his brother's organs had been removed from his stomach, the humans trying to see how long it took for his mutilated body to lapse into shock before they returned what they had taken. He felt every moment that his other half was cut into, flayed open for the sake of science and progress. Just as Nai could feel the swelling pressure on Vash's brain throb inside his skull when he was injected with whatever substance caused his hemorrhage.

When the humans left, Vash reached across their bond to speak with his brother.

'Nai...?'

But his twin was locked away, hiding away in the depths of his mental recess, an attempt to separate himself from the torture he was forced to endure at the hands of lesser beings.

That was understandable, Vash could wait, he had nothing to do but to wait. At least until the humans came back and it was his turn to warm the the operating table.
