Matt did see everything. He liked to lurk in the triplet’s fandom spaces, and when his mental health was good, he even found it kinda fun, though he would never reveal this aloud. He definitely enjoyed watching those same spaces work themselves into a tizzy at his knowledge admittance–these kids were so funny. So it came as no surprise to him when the Tumblr TikTok video showed up on his feed.

Matt hadn’t had a good night. He’d tried to jerk off earlier, all to no avail. Matt rolled his eyes at that one. He knew it was a valid concern, but he also knew that there were prices to be paid for being famous, and he would take a few weird stories in exchange for the life of his literal dreams. And besides, he reasoned to himself, they were always so off-the-mark anyway that it didn’t even feel like he was reading about himself.

But back to the matter at hand. Matt had never even heard of Tumblr, so there couldn’t be that many triplet fan accounts on there, and he figured that after everything he’d seen on Twitter, he was ready for anything.

“Well this is fucking ridiculous,” he grumbled to himself, scrolling to the end of the “headcanon”, as it was called. Matt read the name of the “blogger” (he was learning so many new terms tonight) that posted it - some strange amalgamation of letters and numbers, with, of course, “sturniolo” tacked on to the end. Matt elected to keep his thoughts on the spelling to himself. “You’re weird for that. All of it.” He swiped out of the app, fully prepared to roll over, go to sleep, and forget all about it.

…

But what else did they get wrong about him? What did the rest of them think he did when he had sex? Matt figured he should check that “sturniolo triplet” hashtag one more time. 

He sat up properly for this, sighing as he flicked on his bedside lamp. It illuminated his room, its soft light showcasing the woodsy decorations he’d furnished months ago. With a grimace, he opened the accursed app once more and began a deep dive.

It seemed the entire community centered around “smut” of him and Chris. He saw a few for Nick, a handful for Nate, all of which he scrolled past quickly, blinking them away. He wasn’t trying to dive that deep.

The first thing Matt noticed was that almost every story had a line of photos at the top, like a faux header. None of the images contained anything amiss–all were photos posted by him and his brothers throughout the years, pictures taken by fans at shows, and the like. No, the real stuff lay in the words. This was a community–he could tell that much from the amount of reposting–of very good writers. Many of their stories spanned thousands of words with multiple parts and real plots woven throughout. And there were a lot. It was dizzying. He adjusted himself. 

There were stories for almost every situation, some even making him a drug dealer (though most writers seemed to think that out of anyone, it would be Chris, which he found hilarious due to the fact that Chris couldn’t tell a convincing lie if his life depended on it), a mafia boss, a father, a mechanic, or simply just a doting boyfriend. Some wrote him as a harsh, domineering man, quick to take his bratty girlfriend to task. Some wrote him as a needy submissive individual, and the words they used made his head spin. Matt adjusted himself again. His dick didn’t normally bother him this much. Maybe he needed new boxers. 

Matt himself only had a bit of experience in the wide world of sex. He knew there were some wild kinks out there, but he found he was never much interested in watching that kind of porn, and he’d only been with a few girls his entire life, none of whom had ever asked him to perform such tasks on them, so he really didn’t know what he liked and didn’t like. But alas, Matt still had no idea how Tumblr worked–the images below every story just took him deeper, and it was one of those images that he misguidedly clicked on, an innocuous lilac purple, covered in sparkles. Seems harmless enough.

As Matt tapped around, trying to get back, he found himself on another account and thoroughly lost. An underlined word in the first post caught his attention–concepts. Subtitled below were the words, “short headcanons about the triplets! both sfw and nsfw”. He tilted his head. ‘Sfw’? What does that mean? A quick Google search quieted his questioning. Surely a “safe-for-work” headcanon would be fine to read. He tapped the link, and it directed him to a simpler page, one organized using just his name and Chris’s, each one with links below them. His thumb hovered over one near the top, its title mildly intriguing–“soft!dom!matt”.

Then he paused. Was he really doing this? His dick began to throb. He should have just left the whole thing alone, but now…well, now he had to know.

But today, there was something different in the air. The banter between you and Matt felt more intense, and you noticed the way his smile lingered just a little longer than usual. It was like the whole flirting routine had become second nature, but neither of you seemed to want to stop.

Nick nodded approvingly. “Solid choice. I’m going with Billie Eilish. She’s got that cool, mysterious vibe. I’m here for it.”

All eyes turned to you next. You smiled mischievously, knowing your answer might catch a few of them off guard. “Easy. Niall Horan.”

The reaction was immediate. Chris raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed. “Niall Horan? Nice. You into the whole ‘singer-songwriter’ thing, huh?”

Nick laughed. “Yeah, I see it. Niall’s a cool dude.”

But it was Matt’s reaction that caught your attention. The smile that had been plastered on his face suddenly vanished, replaced by a look of surprise and… something else. His jaw clenched slightly, and you could tell he was trying to play it cool, but his eyes gave him away.

Chris noticed too, nudging Matt with his elbow. “Yo, Matt, you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost.”

Matt blinked, snapping out of whatever trance he had fallen into. “What? No, I’m fine, it’s just… Niall Horan? Really?”

You raised an eyebrow, a little taken aback by his tone. “Yeah, why? What’s wrong with Niall?”

Matt fumbled for words, his face turning red as he stammered out, “I mean, he’s fine, I guess… but… I don’t know, it’s just… you could do better.”

Chris and Nick both exchanged glances, sensing that something was up. Chris decided to poke the bear. “What’s the big deal, Matt? You jealous of Niall Horan or something?”

Matt looked visibly uncomfortable now, running a hand through his hair as he tried to laugh it off. “I’m not jealous, I just—”

And then, before he could stop himself, the words came tumbling out in a rush. “I just don’t like hearing you talk about some other guy when I’ve been trying to get your attention for months.”

The room fell into complete silence. Chris and Nick stared at Matt, wide-eyed, clearly not expecting that level of honesty to come out of their usually reserved brother. You, too, were caught off guard, blinking in surprise as Matt’s words sank in.

He looked mortified, immediately realizing what he had just blurted out. “I—uh, I didn’t mean—”

But there was no taking it back now. He’d said it. He’d admitted that all those cheesy lines, all that playful flirting, had meant something more to him. It wasn’t just a joke.

You didn’t know what to say at first. For months, you had assumed that Matt’s flirting was all in good fun, just part of the easy banter you shared. You never considered that there might be real feelings behind it. But now, seeing the vulnerability in his eyes, everything started to click into place.

“Matt,” you said softly, taking a step closer to him. “You’ve been serious this whole time?”

He shrugged awkwardly, his face still flushed. “I mean… yeah. I thought you’d just see it as a joke because… well, I’m me. But yeah, I guess I wasn’t joking.”

Chris and Nick, sensing that this was turning into something real, slowly backed away, giving you and Matt a bit of space.

You smiled, a little overwhelmed but touched by his honesty. “I had no idea, Matt. I thought we were just messing around.”

Matt gave a sheepish smile. “I was, but… I wasn’t, if that makes sense. I like you, and I guess I didn’t know how else to say it.”

For a moment, you just looked at him, realizing how much you enjoyed all those little flirty moments you had shared. Maybe you had brushed it off as a joke for so long because you were too afraid to admit that you liked him back.

“Well,” you said, your heart racing, “if it makes you feel any better, I don’t think Niall Horan stands a chance compared to you.” (I’m joking, Niall is perfect)

Matt’s eyes widened, his face lighting up with surprise. “Wait, really?”

You nodded, smiling warmly. “Yeah. I think I like you too, Matt.”

A huge grin spread across his face, and for once, Matt was completely speechless. Chris, from the other side of the room, couldn’t help but pipe up. “Wow. Didn’t see that one coming.”

Nick laughed, shaking his head. “Matt actually did it. Respect.”

Matt turned to you, still smiling but clearly embarrassed by his brothers. “So… can I take you on that date? For real this time?”

You laughed, feeling a wave of relief and excitement wash over you. “Yeah, Matt. I think I’d like that.”

As the camera kept rolling, you realized this video had taken a turn no one expected—but somehow, it felt like the perfect ending.

out of the triplets, dewey has the best relationships with the girl characters in the show. she is the closest one to della and webby, and she also has a friend in gosalyn. gravitating more towards girls/finding it easier to talk to them does give me the transfem vibes.

also. she reacted the most extremely to learning she was supposed to be given another name. (donald chose to call her dewford over TURBO??? absolutely criminal)

new merch line. you know the drill

first of all, i don’t hate this line. I think most of the boys are drawn pretty well. but what a strange concept? the diaboys.. as priests? “dark” anti christ priests but still.. strange? it’s unique at least?

my only real complaint with ayato is how his mouth looks weird. c’mon he’s a vampire, show me the fangs. c’mon let him do the iconic bite the glove thing. it actually frustrates me how they missed that opportunity 😭 overall, he looks fine to me. there’s no detail i’m particularly drooling over. except for this one very specific detail that has me drooling over the triplets. & it’s the… halo?? like look at the triplets next to each other. ayato in the middle with his brothers on the side. i LOVE the way they’re turned with him in the middle 😫 on that note, i hate how shuu is at the end. if they just swapped subaru & shuu’s placements, we could’ve kept up with the turn thing the triplets + reiji were doing. 

kanato looks a bit off, right? is it just me or are his eyebags less dark..? idk but he looks a bit off, to me at least. also.. is that teddy? kanato has been seen with more bears in the recent merch lines, but this one kinda looks like teddy.. except he’s so dark brown?? anyways, as off as he looks to me, i still really like him. he’s grown on me the more i look at him, i think he looks pretty, & i like the pose. also kanato with earring <3

shuu’s face is very very pretty, despite that there’s nothing really that interesting about his design to me. now he doesn’t look bad at all, just a tad boring in my opinion. other then that i’m crazy about how pretty they drew his face & hair <3

why is reiji so hot rn?? the face, the pose, the chained glasses, the ascot, my god reiji pull it back sir you are a priest. i originally thought his hair looked a little flat but i think that might’ve just been me. anyways, i love him so much <3

kou is so cute looking!! i think his priest getup looks so nice & pretty on him! i’m also a bit pink & black biased, but aside from that, i really do like him. i’m very pleased with this kou. he looks cute to me <3 i like his pose too <3

azusa so pretty like when does he not look ethereal? & yknow how much i love azusa with wings <3 i love how his wings have bandages on them. it’s so azusa. i don’t really like the design of the knife but oh well he still looks pretty

carla looks alright :/ i’m a bit disappointed tbh. I always love the black ribbon in his hair, but it’s just meh here. of course i love seeing it, but not my favorite appearance of it 😔 i really don’t like the weird wind blowing thing that’s going on with him. especially with this video quality, some of his details look bad to me. like that specific strand of hair blown too close to his mouth. looks fine in higher quality, & up close, but at quick glance.. not so much. i also just don’t love the angle. it could’ve been better (imo) but he’s fine overall

KINO IS JUST GIVING IN THAT POSE. he’s got the most unique pose so he stands out the most. i’m also a fan of how his color complements the black. he just looks so fucking pretty to me & i just love his tongue sticking out. he’s one of my favorite looks tbh i just love him

Today's (7/22/2024) Episode: An Unexpected Phone Call

Being part of his son's household hadn't changed anything about Peachy's life plans.

His family knew he planned to join Jack in the ever after soon, but he intended to keep bringing joy and laughter to the world until his very last day.

Peachy had always done well for himself on the comedy circuit, maintaining a modest but loyal fan base. The set he'd done highlighting the "joys" of pregnancy during his third trimester remained one of his most popular skits, much to chagrin of the child born of those labors. 

Luigi’s least favorite part of spending more time with his dad was the repeated embarrassment of being introduced as "the little one that was up on stage with me that night“ to every sim that mentioned enjoying the recordings of that famous set. 

As Luigi's own fame grew, he also began to have to deal with sims recognizing his uncommon name and putting the pieces together.

He did his best to take it all in stride, smiling and laughing (on the outside). What neither he nor his father could ever have anticipated was a remastered re-release of that performance being the catalyst for Peachy's stardom ramping up just as his life was winding down.

Peachy and Jack may have had only one child, but between his nephews and nieces, step-kids, and adopted son Peachy had found himself regularly surrounded by young sims and the often-hilarious stories of their loving, frazzled parents. Ever since the time he'd spun up a "family friendly" skit to perform for young Luigi at their local fall festival he'd continued to maintain a large stock of PG material in his playbook. 

To that end he'd come to be known as a "family comedian". It meant that he booked more than his fair share of children's birthday parties and baby showers, but he never minded. Being a familiar icon to the younger crowd gave him a leg up in promoting the family’s foundation for at-risk youth.

Unbeknownst to Peachy, one of his baby shower bookings was for the sister of a top-level executive at Plumbob Pictures. 

Her brother had helped set up for the party, and quietly stuck around in the background when he recognized the entertainment for the evening. The studio exec also happened to be expecting, and Peachy’s well polished performance hit home, prompting him to do a bit of extra research that night on the old cop turned funny man.

Not very long after that Peachy got a call from an unrecognized number right as he was getting ready to silence his phone to go onstage and perform a new skit about grandparenthood for a group of gray-haired triplets who were celebrating their children’s synchronized pregnancies. 

“Hello?” he answered. “You caught me on my way to the stage, so this will have to be quick.”

“That’s exactly what I need to talk to you about!” said the excited voice on the other end of the line. “Look, I know this is unexpected, but my name is Theo, and I have … well it sounds ridiculous to say out loud, but this is an honest to Grim entertainment emergency, and a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Theo had recently been promoted to president of the studio, and a live comedy special he’d lined up and promoted had suddenly fallen apart.

He’d be starting his paternity leave the next day. If he left behind a hole this big in the schedule, he feared he wouldn’t have a job to come back to.

He was prepared to sign truly ridiculous terms to get an experienced and non-controversial star like Peachy on stage in … the next 45 minutes.

Peachy hated to abandon the grandparents-to-be, but this really was a once in a lifetime chance to shape the entertainment legacy he left behind.

He told Theo the broad strokes of what he wanted in the contract, both for himself and for the young comedian who was warming up the crowd and would have to carry the rest of his original booking. After a quick pep talk and apology to poor Susan, he rushed out the door towards the studio.

This was a dream he hadn’t realized he’d been harboring until halfway through the fateful phone call, but it was time to go make it come true!

She's only 21 and she's already planning on using multiple women for vanity surrogacies?

JoJo Siwa recently shared her plans to become a mother of three children with the help of surrogacy. The 21-year-old singer and former Dance Moms star revealed that she wants to have three babies carried and delivered by three different surrogates. This decision is due to JoJo being gay and needing to plan her pregnancy differently than a straight person.

((So... uh, rēad this post for details, but Super Mario-kun has apparently let us all down, by not having Hellen or our beloved Ammaliaze sisters appear at all! While we're talking about it, does anyone even like the headcanon last name I gave them? I tried to find out where I got it from (all I remember is that it was "some name site"), but Google claims that this is the only instance on the whole entire internet of those exact letters being used in that exact order. So, I guess I've got that going for me?

But anyways, ask @foxune about any Super Mario-kun related questions, it seems like he's America's expert on the subject. At least we're gonna call him that until anyone else challenges him for the title, then? IDK.

Of course this also means we're never getting new icons for Johnny Deepend, Captain Fishook, Phantasmagloria, or Hellen, at least not manga ones. Speaking of which, the entirety of Book 56 has just been sitting on my Google Drive for over two years now. I'm simply too lazy to convert them into tumblr posts, also I found out that my scanner cuts the tops off everything, so I really ought to start all over again.

The only silver lining, is that now my How to Tell Your Magician Triplets Apart post will never be debunked or age poorly, because Nintendo will never visit these characters again.))

(Asharact Saga) headshot series 1 (Lords + Elaine)

These were drawn all the way back in May of last year! i wanted the Asharact saag characters to match 1-E on artfight since all of their leading icons were from the seating cart. So then I did these, headshots for the main lords, elaine, the triplets and Aeterna.

These were done in the same way as the 1-E seating chart: simple line art, base color, and shading. nothing too special

I'm still using them today, but I think I might redraw them next year tbh. Only a handful of them were actually bangers and aged well. For the most part, they're all just fine. Out of the lords, Remiel, Silvanus and Sparrow all turned out good. Elaine's is fine ig (although the pose is kinda cute)

Are mervin and obie connected to vesper or lust at all?? Mervin and vesper interacting would be so funny

None of the triplets are. The only demon so far that holds any sort of connection to Vesper, apart from his servants and some high-rankers, is Santi.

I'm not sure how well an encounter between those two would go. On the one hand, Mervin will never let himself get caught easily, on the other, there's little that's more ego-boosting than being desired by an Icon, of all people.

I can see a back and forth happening where Mervin clearly has one foot on each side of the fence and the Icon is just sort of tickling him over to his side patiently, but if Vesper really wanted him, the demon would have no chances of escape.

Obie sincerely would not know what to do in front of Vesper. He does think the stomach mouth is sweet, but his thoughts are more among the lines of "Wow, I wish I had one so I could eat everything at once." rather than "That would be the wildest oral of my life."

Ni No Kuni Music Analysis : “World Map”, Joe Hisaishi

As soon as I put up the poll, I knew exactly which piece y’all were going to pick for me to look at next, but it’s truly iconic so I don’t blame y’all in the slightest! For the second installment of my analysis of the Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch soundtack, we are going to be taking a look at the “World Map” theme!! So without anymore delay, let’s get started! (I had to link a recording of the piece at the end of the post instead of the beginning because I’m making this post on my phone so… sorry for that guys. If you are familiar with the soundtrack of this game, you probably know the song “Kokoro no Kakera” that plays during the credits. The “World Map” theme is essentially an embellished variation of that song. I can’t be the only one who sat there in the over world and just listened to this piece because it’s just that good!

0:00 : A strong opening phrase featuring brass instruments is a great way to set the tone of this piece. I like how the melody played by the trumpets ascends, building up anticipation. It’s like you are walking into the other world via your gateway spell.

0:12 : Here is where the main melody of the piece comes in. I have now confirmed via some further research that the instrument here is a whistle. This actually ties into a point I had forgotten to make in my last post. Joe Hisaishi, the composer of the Ni No Kuni games’ soundtracks, referenced Irish folk music in writing these pieces. The featured whistle is definitely a staple in Irish folk music and mimics the melodic voice part of “Kokoro no Kakera”. I really like the added grace notes in the melody which further enhance the Irish folk music theming.

0:30 : The echoing flute/clarinet line paired with tambourine provides a whimsical contrast to the pervious whistle solo.

0:45 : This melody played by the strings right here, just listen to it. The way the melody flows in contrast to the harmonic woodwind line just gives me a homey feeling. This part right here is what draws you in and makes you feel like this other world is your home away from home, or at least that’s what I think.

1:03 : With a French horn solo continuing the melody making it more timid feeling, the trumpets and strings then come back in and crescendo the phrase.

1:16 : This transition makes me imagine running away to take cover from wild familiars lol

1:26 : I really like the harmony line in the middle string voices here. It really makes us appreciate the main melody more and highlights the key the piece is written in: E major.

1:44 : Tambourine and French horn come together, later with flute taking over, pushing the flow of the piece forward and crescendoing into the next section.

1:58 : Another key influence for Hisaishi when writing the Ni No Kuni soundtracks was the fantasy genre. This section right here has a very fantasy feel to it. It’s very majestic and grand.

2:08 : This section has a much more mellow coloring than the previous section. I really love how Hisaishi includes sections like this in the piece while still pushing the flow of the music continuously. There’s no moment of rest in this piece for sure!

2:16 : Here comes the whistle again! I always hear the lyric to the English version of “Kokoro no Kakera” at the end of this phrase when I listen to this part which are “On our journey through another world”.

2:36 : Another grand entrance of the melody here with the brass. It’s similar to the opening section but much grander this time!

2:54 : I. Love. Triplets!! The triplet harmony in the strings is just chef’s kiss writing!

2:56 : Flute returns and the music decrescendos then crescendos into…

3:04 : This has to be the most intense part of the piece! Everything has been building up to this moment. Good use of the upper woodwinds here too, really drives the intensity forward.

3:09 : I like the use my mallet percussion here to gently soften the melody. I like to think of this part as the sun setting as the night sky rolls in, even though there is no real world clock in the game lol

3:17 : The last phrase the whistle plays really brings a warm color into the ending of this piece making it bittersweet.

3:22 : Piano, drums, and brass all come together to strongly end the piece. It’s almost symbolizing the end of a journey.

Of course you can join! Everyone can join! 16, What's Your IRL nickname(s)? Worteltje, which means Little Carrot/Tiny Carrot. Years ago, my mom once again broke a promise, and I ended up sending her this rather iconic passive aggressive text that was pretty much something along the lines of, "Thank you for disappointing me, I hope you have a terrible day and I wish for you to choke on your small carrots." As my mom was having a short-lived obsession with these small carrots at the time. My mom was basically howling with laughter when she got my text and she was still chuckling when she got home. Ever since, it became my nickname as I've always loathed nicknames based on my actual name. 50, Wildcard: If you have to pick a colour ( or a triplets of colours) to describe yourself, which ones would you choose? Why?

Black, gold and coral. Black, because it is the colour of associated with grief and depression, to reflect the bad shit that has formed me and I will carry with me forever. Gold, because it contains many of yellow's qualities like cheerfulness, but it is also a colour associated with rarity, as from my autism to my talents, I am a pretty unique individual. Coral, because it is the fine line between orange and pink, the former colour represents energy and enjoyment but with my autism I need to have my more laid back moments too so I would never outright say orange, and pink is the color of sweetness but also often is thought of as immaturity or femininity (I am pretty feminine, but I am more the practical type and mature) so I'd never outright pick pink either. Coral allows a combination of both traits, and is the third colour I'd pick.

Week ending: 20th September

Well, only a few months after our first double A-sides, we've got a whole week of them! Clearly the format is taking off. Interestingly, this means it's also the longest entry we've had in quite a while, with six new songs to listen to and review (some of which I'm provisionally a lot more excited about than others...)

The Great Pretender - The Platters (double A-side, peaked at Number 5)

Well, this is the version of this song that I knew, after Jimmy Parkinson's cover version, which hit the charts, a few months back. And I have to say, I think that this is one where the original blows the cover out of the water. The Platters are just a cut above Jimmy Parkinson - there's a reason they're still a reasonably well-known act, while Jimmy's not a name that I'd ever heard of before.

I love the emotion that's been poured into this, from the emphatic acknowledgement of the yes, at the start of the title line, to the slight hitch as Tony Williams sings about how You've left me to dream all alone. I can really buy this as a song about a man putting on a front, and pretending - to himself or to others - that he's fine and still happy after his love left him.

In this context, I really appreciate the doo-wop instrumentation, too, from the woozy saxophone and piano at the start, to the oooh-oooh backing singers, and the way they chime in with a full-voiced still around right at the end. It gives the whole thing a sense of texture and intensity that Jimmy's solo version lacked. He may have had backing singers, but the Platters go beyond that and are really part of the whole song.

The song's iconic, and with its other A-side, it apparently also featured in the film Rock Around the Clock, along with Bill Haley's title song and a bunch of other Bill Haley numbers. The film itself is apparently a heavily fictionalised film about the emergence of rock and roll, with the Comets portrayed as the kind of ground-breaking first ever rock and roll band. Which absolutely was not true, but it's cool that the film exists, still, with a bunch of real-life music industry figures playing versions of themselves. Very meta. Also, apparently the Platters are shown at the end of the film sharing a stage with the Comets and other white groups, which was seen at the time as quite daring, integration-wise. So not entirely a white-wash, I guess?

Only You (And You Alone) - The Platters (double A-side, 5)

Yet another song that we've already heard as a cover. This time it was the Hilltoppers, another white group - and again, the Platters' version is more emotional, with little vocal turns and twists from lead singers Tony Williams that elevate it, somehow. The little uh-uh hiccups, and the sweeps upwards on the higher notes, or the you-ouuuuuuu at the end - all of these go a long way to make this specific version way more iconic.

Amazingly, apparently the little lurch on the first "Oooh-nly" was inspired by a rehearsal session in a car (?) where the car hit a bump and jerked. Tony's voice did the little hiccup, everyone laughed, but then they decided that it actually worked. And thank goodness they did, because it's awesome.

Aside from this, there are also lots of nice doo-wop touches, too, from the piano's insistent triplets, which mostly simmer along underneath the vocals, driving the tune on, barring the odd oh-woah-woah-woah moment, to the oooooh vocals, and the way they ramp up towards the end of the song, concluding with a final, elegiac one and only you. All fun details that also serve to make the song that bit more memorable.

Lyrically, the concept is as simple as it was the first time we heard it; Tony's convinced that Only you / Can make this world seem right / Only you / Can make the darkness bright. Tony's love is the only one who can do this, transforming first Tony's world, and then Tony himself. It's a song about the transformative, world-changing power of love, and damn, if I'm not a sucker for it. It's romantic, it doesn't rely on tired metaphors and overblown rhetoric, but it also isn't underselling anything. It's a song that's not afraid of being earnest, but never strays into overdoing it. Excellent stuff.

The Ying Tong Song - The Goons (double A-side, 3)

I don't have a great feeling about this. I didn't like the Goons' last outing much at all, and this song's title also smacks of racism. I mean, it might not be, but it king of looks like the kind of thing people make up as "fake Chinese". But I'm willing to be proven wrong, as I start it up?

Okay, we've started in a very operatic mode, with what sounds like a flute, a harp and a man singing about how There's a song that I recall my mother sang to me / She sang it as she tucked me in when I was ninety-three. Which is already kind of nonsensical, setting the tone we're going to follow for the rest of this tune.

And then, the song suddenly shifts mode, with a guitar strumming and then two very irritating voices singing the repeated lyric Ying tong, ying tong, ying tong, ying tong, ying tong iddle i po. It does vaguely give off a "racist fake Chinese accent" vibe, but having heard other Goons songs, I suspect this is more just the "stock irritating Goon voice" that we also heard elsewhere, complete with various spoken digressions as the two voices stumble over each other and trip on what they're trying to sing. It's really annoying, and not in a way that makes me want to listen to this track, sorry Goons.

They're then repeatedly interrupted for the second half of the song, first by a clip of a female opera singer singing Take me back to Vienna, then by a clip of what sounds like a bomb blast, and finally by sections with one of our Goons just blowing raspberries and sections just consisting of what sounds like lots of feet walking round a gymnasium or something falling from a great height? The "joke" I'm assuming is that the song's annoying enough that people keep interrupting it, but it just keeps going. Except that's not massively funny - or maybe I've just had a bit of a sense of humour failure?

The best bit, for my money, is the very end, where the voices are replaced by a pitched-up version that sound like little gremlins or mice on helium. This, to me, feels like the voice that the whole thing should have been done in, giving it a comedy cartoon feel, rather than just sounding like two grown men putting on irritating voices. I think it helps that they give up on the shtick of interrupting them every three seconds, too - just let your song be a song!

There is theoretically something fairly avant-garde about the use of sound collage and sampled clips here. Too bad it's wasted in this borderline unlistenable song. Seriously, how did this get as far as it did?

Bloodnok's Rock 'N' Roll Call - The Goons (double A-side, 3)

Oh, joy, more Goons. Yay. I guess this song has a banger title on its side. It sounds like a DnD orc decided to start playing boogie-woogie music!

And as the song starts, that's what we seem to have, a sort of stompy rock and roll number that's clearly parodying tunes like Rock Around the Clock, with their 12-bar blues structure and counting shtick. There's also maybe an element of songs like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, with their military trappings, too? We start with a bugle call, for sure, and then a load of counting, before a voice informs us that You've got to rock and roll in a roll call way / You've got to march with a Marilyn Monroe-ese way / You've got to rock and roll with your old kit bag / But you mustn't ever mention her name in the mess.

It's incoherent nonsense, but I'm hopeful at this point that it's going to be an actually good record - a tune, some speed, a relevant bit of parody, and no irritating spoken sections! But no, I spoke too soon, because a reedy sort of voice is now interrupting to insist that we Stop! Stop! Stop that sinful naughty record-type music!

Thankfully, he doesn't quite manage to put a kibosh on it, but the rest of the song does stop and start a bit more, with more spoken segments. True to Goon form, these are without exception bizarre, annoying and not particularly funny. There's a skit going on about some old flame visiting the military mess, and possibly some jokes about rock and rollers being a bunch of skint musicians who need money? I say possibly, because you can't really follow it - if there's humour there, it needs some serious excavating. There's also the phrase "steaming love-dance", which I think puts an end to any amusement I felt, by dint of literally making me feel nauseous. Bleurgh.

Bring a Little Water, Sylvie - Lonnie Donegan (double A-side, 7)

This tune benefits largely, in this listen-through, from not being a Goons track. Seriously, there's not much to this, but after the two tracks of Goon-branded torment, Lonnie's folksy stylings were about as refreshing as the water Sylvie's supposed to be bringing in this song! A much needed break.

As often is the case with Lonnie, this whole song is a very American-sounding affair, sung in a sort of mock deep South accent. I'm not well enough versed in mid-20th century American accents, or their connotations, but I suspect this is Lonnie putting on a deliberately exaggerated "black" singing voice. Which is interesting to see in this era of segregation, and especially interesting in a week where you've also got the Platters charting with two songs that sound absolutely nothing like this.

Not that that's exactly a fair comparison, since Lonnie's not going for soul or even R&B, really - this is clearly a folk song, with folksy interests that are clear even in the spoken intro, as Lonnie tells us that here's a story 'bout a man workin' in a field / He bin workin' all day, he gettin' hot, an' he's thoisty. The scene thus set, we get to the point of the song, which is Lonnie entreating Sylvie to bring a little water.

Except - shh - I'm not sure the song's really about bringing water? I don't know, there's just something a little flirty about it all, with the do you love me, Sylvie, every little once in a while of it all. And what else should I make of the won't you prove it to me now line? He wants something more than water, I suspect - or at least, the possibility's meant to be there. It's an interpretation that fits well with Lonnie's desperate, frenetic delivery, and the slight rasp to this voice here, all of which give the whole song a sort of roguish charm.

Beyond this speculation, there's not much to this track. Lonnie's not doing anything wild with the guitar accompaniment here, and the bring a little water line makes up, like, 80% of the song. It's not trying for anything too wild, you get the feeling - Lonnie's just vibing, and the public are eating it up, nothing fancy needed.

Dead or Alive - Lonnie Donegan (double A-side, 7)

An exciting title, for sure, and the twangy guitar line at the start is already miles more interesting than anything in the last track, with the way it jumps about all over the place, blues notes and accidentals jumbling together in a way that's technically pretty impressive, in a slightly random-sounding way.

And then the song gets started in earnest, with lines about how the new sheriff sent me a letter / He said "Come up and see me, dead or alive" and about how he even sent me my picture. Reading between the lines, this is clearly a song about a man with a wanted poster out for him, but Lonnie sound blithely unconcerned by the whole affair - heck, he sounds like he's holding back laughter on quite a few of the lines, which is such an excellent character detail. With it, Lonnie fully takes on the character of a devil-may-care, loveable but slightly smug Wild West rogue.

And as ever, this all ends with Lonnie picking out a line or two to repeat ad infinitum, until the phrase loses all meaning. In this case, it's a line about how It's a hard road, dead or alive. Which is as good a line as any to repeat, I guess?

And weirdly, after all this, the track ends fading out on some very cool guitar that's been bubbling along throughout the song, but that really comes to the fore right in the final second or two, and that really reminds me of something that I can't quite place. It kind of feels like the sort of chords and rhythms that people put into fake "Egyptian" music - but I couldn't say exactly why it feels like that, or give an example of what I mean, so maybe this is me talking nonsense. And it's literally just the last few seconds. Odd.

Whew. That felt like a lot of songs! Quite a mixed bag, too - some predictable bangers, but some I rightfully went in dreading. Also some Lonnie Donegan numbers, which were soldly in-between both poles, neither great nor terrible. Which leaves me two Platters songs to decide between - but the interesting vocal delivery just about cinches it, for me!

Favourite song of the bunch: Only You (And You Alone)
