Ok so I know it’s really easy to think, “oh yeah the trump org conviction is just a million dollar fine, they didn’t even charge trump, it’s nothing but a slap on the wrist”. I understand why it seems that way. Not just because of the pitiful sentence they’re about to receive, but because it still seems as if Trump and his cronies will escape Justice.
But hear me out.
This is just the beginning.
This is absolutely just the beginning of the end of the trump organization.
The trump org has a lot of debt. Like. A shit ton. Donald trump has called himself “the king of debt”, because he built his empire off nothing but loans and over-inflated property as collateral for those loans. Most of the trump org’s wealth is is tied into those properties. Most of the property is tied into the loans. And most of Donald Trump’s wealth is tied into the trump org and it’s properties.
With their still hot and fresh convictions, the trump org’s biggest issue is it’s bank problem. Using fraudulent business records on a bank loan will invalidate the loan. A jury just found that the trump org filed fraudulent business records. It’s a safe bet that right now, banks are auditing their loans with them, to find out if the documents submitted on their applications were fraudulent.
Banks don’t take too kindly to their borrowers lying to them or using fraudulent records to secure a loan. If the banks find out the trump org lied on their loan applications, they’re gonna start calling in these loans. Loans the Trump Org doesn’t have the cash on hand to cover, because their wealth is tied into their assets.
Of course, he could always go out and ask for another loan from a different bank. But since the trump org was just found guilty of falsifying their business records, no bank is ever going to go near them again. Let alone loan them ANOTHER 1 billion dollars. Their credibility as a company who can be trusted with big money loans is dead and gone. They’ve been blacklisted.
Which leaves the trump org and it’s owners in a very precarious situation. They need cash to pay off these loans, but they don’t have it. So they can steal top secret documents and sell them, or they will have to liquidate their assets to garner the cash to pay the loans.
Small problem, though. The Trump Org used their property as collateral, meaning they can’t sell their properties without notifying the banks, getting their approval, and giving the banks their fair share of the final sale. And if they were to try to sell their properties, they wouldn’t be allowed to. Because the trump org overinflated the value of it’s assets to secure the loans in the first place. So the real value of its assets is *much* lower than what the banks were told it was worth, and what they were given in loans. The bank is never going to let them sell their assets for pennies on the dollar. Instead, they’re going to invalidate the loan and make them pay it in full. And if they can’t pay, they will keep the collateral.
Knowing they have shit tons of debt that is likely to be called in, AND that they can’t liquidate their assets to pay it, this leaves the trump org with only one viable option: declaring bankruptcy. A last ditch effort.
Bankruptcy could be an out for them. We’v seen it before. A company declares bankruptcy, moves their assets around, and then reforms under the guise of a different company that has, effectively, a clean slate.
Enter: the state of New York. Also the trump orgs biggest problem.
New York District Attorney Letita James has been investigating the trump org’s finances for years now, uncovering a litany of fraud and tax evasion in the process. She worked in conjunction with the Manhattan DA to bring the charges the trump org was just convicted of. She has filed a civil lawsuit against the trump org, accusing them of a years-long practice of, you guessed it: tax fraud and filing fraudulent business records.
Her lawsuit is now a complete slam dunk. She is arguing that the trump org committed tax fraud and defrauded the state by falsifying it’s business records. Not only does she have all of the trump orgs financial records and bank statements, which in itself is enough to win the lawsuit, but the trump org was just criminally charged with 17 counts of tax fraud and falsifying business records. Pretty strong and convincing evidence the company committed the crime, if you were a person sitting on that jury.
The lawsuit seeks to revoke the business license of the owners of the trump org in the state of New York, forcing them to relocate the business and apply for a business license in a different state. This would require submitting the company’s business records and getting approval for a business license. And since the trump orgs business records have been proven to be fraudulent, there’s a next to 0 chance they get approval for a license outside of NY. Leaving the trump org stuck in NY and at the mercy of the NYAG.
On top of that, the lawsuit also seeks $250 million in damages, which the trump org doesn’t have the cash to cover. Because their wealth is tied into assets they have used as collateral for loans. If they lose the lawsuit, which is a guarantee, and they don’t have the cash to cover the fine, they are subject to having their assets seized by the state of New York.
So unable to pay off the loans, unable to sell their assets, unable to pay the fine from the lawsuit, and unable to relocate their business to a different state, that brings us back to bankruptcy. The trump orgs last and only option to avoid all of this.
Letita James knows bankruptcy is in the future of the trump org. She knows they would attempt to avoid accountability by declaring bankruptcy and starting a new company to transfer their assets (fun fact, trump started a second company in NY called “Trump Org 2”. It was *that* obvious). So just within the past couple of months, she asked the court to appoint a monitor to oversee the trump org’s finances. And that request was granted.
The trump org now has a court ordered monitor overseeing their finances, effectively freezing them and preventing them from wiggling away. They cannot move around their assets and restructure them under the guise of a different company without the knowledge, and approval, of the court. They also cannot sell any of their assets without the knowledge and approval of both the court, and the banks. And every financial statement or transaction from here on out must be approved by the court, meaning they can no longer file false business records to secure massive loans.
(TL;DR) The trump org has been effectively backed into a corner from all sides. If the banks don’t invalidate their loans, they will default on them because the trump org doesn’t have the cash to pay them. If they do invalidate their loans, they trump org will not be able to pay them, and their assets will be seized by the banks. They cannot sell their assets, because their overinflated value was used as collateral. And they risk having their assets seized by the state of NY, which has also appointed a court ordered monitor that prevents them from declaring bankruptcy to avoid accountability.
Oh, and did I mention that Allen Weisselburg, the trump orgs chief financial officer who was given a plea deal after agreeing to testify against the trump org, testified at trial that Donald trump was personally involved in the crimes he, and the trump org, committed. So the owners of the trump org, trump, ivanka, jr, risk potential criminal prosecution and could face the same felonies as their CFO. Because they were directly implicated in the crimes the trump org was convicted of.
So yeah. On its face, the trump org convictions seem inconsequential. But if you were Donald trump, or any of the owners of the trump org, you would be pissing yourself in fear, backed into a corner from all sides awaiting the first of many death blows to land.

America didn’t just spontaneously become a 3rd-world country.
Joe Biden deliberately made it happen.
And if you voted for him, YOU caused it too.
So now, when you see MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of illegals marching toward our border... DON'T BLAME DONALD TRUMP. Biden did it because YOU voted for him.
But Joe Biden won’t get YOU a 4-star room in the most luxurious city in the world, to thank you for your vote.
He won’t pay your smartphone bill because you put him in office.
He won’t make sure your kids get a good education because you support everything he says. He already HAS your vote.
He takes that for granted. He’s after the NEW people. The 18-40,000,000 illegals who will someday take your job because they work cheaper than you.
The illegals who get free access to what you must pay for.
The illegals who Joe fast-tracked into the welfare system that your taxes pay for.
And if you’re still supporting everything this bastard president does now, and you still plan to vote for him in November:
Get back to me in 10 years when your children have transgendered without your knowledge or consent and can never give you grandchildren.
Get back to me when they can’t buy a home because the economy never comes back. Get back to me when they can’t speak freely in public because the government controls what they can say.
Get back to me when your daughter gets beaten up in school for saying she doesn’t want to compete against biological males. America didn’t BECOME a 3rd-world country.
Democrats DELIBERATELY made it into one - and they’re nowhere near done.
That’s why I’m voting for Donald Trump in 2024.

How to Stop Republicans From Tanking the Economy Over the Debt Ceiling
Republicans are threatening to destroy the economy if President Biden doesn’t give into their demands. But the Fourteenth Amendment gives him the power to stop them.
Republicans are taking advantage of the “debt ceiling” to try to force deep, painful cuts to programs Americans rely on. If Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling, America might have to default on its bills, destroying the credit of the United States and wiping out millions of jobs.
Remember, raising the debt ceiling isn’t about taking on new debt. It’s about whether America will pay its current debts.
This is a key reason why raising the debt ceiling should not be negotiable.
Ironically, Republicans had no problem raising it three times under Trump, even as they enacted major tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy that caused the nation’s debt to soar.
But now, Kevin McCarthy and his band of MAGA radicals say they’ll only raise it in exchange for drastic cuts to health care, education, veterans’ benefits, and more.
My advice to President Biden: Ignore them. Mr. President, your oath to uphold the Constitution takes precedence. And as the supreme law of the land, the Constitution has greater weight than the law on the debt ceiling.
Section Four of the Fourteenth Amendment states that, “The validity of the public debt of the United States … shall not be questioned.”
A debt ceiling that prevents the government from honoring its existing financial commitments clearly violates the Constitution.
So, if Republicans threaten the full faith and credit of the United States, you are constitutionally obligated to ignore the debt ceiling, and must continue to pay the nation’s bills.
Should they wish, let the radical Republicans take you to court.
Even the conservatives on the Supreme Court will likely support you. No “originalist” interpretation of the Constitution could read that document differently,
The Constitution makes it clear that Congress’s power to borrow money does not include the power to default on such borrowings.
If Republicans are going to play this game, Mr. President, you need to play hard ball.

Nikki Haley intentionally contorts her positions in order to keep voters from knowing where she really stands.
Nobel economics laureate Paul Krugman in the New York Times had a good column about Haley this week.
So it seems worth looking at what Haley stands for. From a political point of view, one answer might be: nothing. A recent Times profile described her as having “an ability to calibrate her message to the moment.” A less euphemistic way to put this is that she seems willing to say whatever might work to her political advantage. “Flip-flopping” doesn’t really convey the sheer cynicism with which she has shifted her rhetoric and changed her positions on everything from abortion rights to immigration to whether it’s OK to try overturning a national election. And anyone hoping that she would govern as a moderate if she should somehow make it to the White House is surely delusional. Haley has never really shown a willingness to stand up to Republican extremists — and at this point the whole G.O.P. has been taken over by extremists.
We pointed out about 10 days ago that Haley is just as anti-abortion as the other GOP candidates. As president, she would appoint justices to the US Supreme Court just like the Republican justices who struck down Roe v. Wade.
She is consistently with the radical right when it comes to economics and income equality.
Haley has shown some consistency on issues of economic and fiscal policy. And what you should know is that her positions on these issues are pretty far to the right. In particular, she seems exceptionally explicit, even among would-be Republican nominees, in calling for an increase in the age at which Americans become eligible for Social Security — a bad idea that seems to be experiencing a revival.
Do you wish to end up having to support your parents because President Haley got a Republican Congress to raise the retirement age to 70?
Republicans say there's a funding gap when it comes to Social Security. But instead of raising the disproportionately low taxes paid by their billionaire donors, they want to slash benefits.
[T]he system would need additional revenue to continue paying scheduled benefits in full. But the extra revenue required would be smaller than you probably think. The most recent long-term projections from the Congressional Budget Office show Social Security outlays rising to 6.2 percent of gross domestic product in 2053 from 5.1 percent this year, not exactly an earth-shattering increase. [ ... ] Anyone who says, as Haley does, that the retirement age should rise in line with increasing life expectancy is being oblivious, perhaps willfully, to the grim inequality of modern America. Until Covid struck, average life expectancy at 65, the relevant number, was indeed rising. But these gains were concentrated among Americans with relatively high incomes. Less affluent Americans — those who depend most on Social Security — have seen little rise in life expectancy, and in some cases actual declines.
Not only would Haley not raise taxes on her billionaire buddies, she would cut them even further.
Haley, of course, wants to cut income taxes. My guess is that none of this will be relevant, that Trump will be the nominee. But if he stumbles, I would beg political reporters not to focus on Haley’s personal affect, which can seem moderate, but rather on her policies. On social issues and the fate of democracy, she appears to be a pure weather vane, turning with the political winds. On fiscal and economic policy, she’s a hard-right advocate of tax cuts for the rich and benefit cuts for the working class.
The libertarian extremist Koch network has endorsed Nikki Haley. That's further proof that she's no moderate.
Koch family-backed PAC endorses Nikki Haley for president
Nikki Haley, a onetime member of the Trump administration, is little more than a more socially acceptable version of Trump. That does not make her moderate. She is to the right of George W. Bush who appointed Samuel Alito, the architect of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision which killed Roe v. Wade, to the Supreme Court.
youtube
As Tara Setmayer indicated in that video, just saying that somebody is better than Trump is a very low bar. A snake could walk over that bar.
Don't confuse what Paul Krugman calls Nikki Haley's "personal effect" with her actual far right views. We're voting for a President, not Ms. Personality.

One of trumps campaign promises is an free online American University. HE IS OFFERING FREE COLLEGE, and people will probably be pissed about it and say it isn’t free college because it doesn’t pay for them to get a useless degree at an overpriced university
Completely forgot American University existed, had to look them up and see what they're about.
Pretty basic, standard degrees you can take just about anywhere
Tumblr media
Those are all things that are going to be Swiss Army Knife type departments, get a basic degree if you want to go further you can.
Tumblr media
international and unknown would probably flatten those numbers out, except the last two.
Impressive list of graduates too.
people will probably be pissed about it and say it isn’t free college because it doesn’t pay for them to get a useless degree at an overpriced university
Nailed it in one, likely be people saying the classes are indoctrination as well, several other things they'll complain about.
Not free anyhow, wish they would be honest and call it taxpayer funded, which the average person with a degree will in the end contribute more in tax revenue than the education they got cost from a financial standpoint I don't entirely oppose taxpayer funded higher ed.
Just has to be limited to degrees that will actually be things people use and can make a living with, which if you look you can find a list of degrees that qualify for student loan forgiveness after X amount of time making minimum payments provided you work in the public sector with them.
My brother got $250,000 in student loans and such most of which will go poof soon because he's been working in various public defenders offices and similar.
This is going to be similar to him trying to get various countries on board with a pressure campaign on countries around the world in an effort to get them to decriminalize homosexuality, can't toss people in jail for being gay anymore, people said he was racist for doing that or it was only to stick it to Iran,
which who fucking cares if it was or not, you'd rather people in jail or executed for being gay
Nothing any president does will be terribly popular with a fair sized portion of the people, the hope they can have is that history vindicates them.
With this it could be 'here's your option, your other option includes a bill that will need to be payed now instead of over your working life, and you'll also be helping to pay tuition for people going to American University too with your taxes.
Much like people that send their kids to private school still pay the taxes that go to the public ones.

When Hillary Clinton said that her Republican rival Donald Trump had paid no federal income tax in some years, Trump didn’t deny it.
In fact, he said: “That makes me smart.”
Clinton was pressing Trump for not releasing his tax returns for public scrutiny. Trump has said he won’t release his tax returns until a routine audit is complete, though every major party presidential candidate over the past 40 years have released tax returns.
“There is something he is hiding,” Clinton said of Trump during the debate.
“Or maybe he doesn’t want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he’s paid nothing in federal taxes, because the only years that anybody’s ever seen were a couple of years when he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license, and they showed he didn’t pay any federal income tax,” she said.
I. Don't. Care.
I don't give a porcupine's ass about any of this crap. My sleep is undisturbed over taxes, my own or anyone else's.
I am not convinced that all politicians don't need to be strung up from lamp posts in the public square. We are so fucked as a country right now thanks to fucking politicians on both sides of the aisle. Our debt is so astronomical we could tax at a tax rate of 100% and we'd fund the bloat for about eight minutes.
Anyway, until we come together and evict 'em all, I don't give a shit.
Life's too short and I'm going to spend the rest of my days listening to Glenn Miller, Nat King Cole, and Deano. I'm going to fish and enjoy my grandkids and play hockey. I'm going to read good books and watch good movies.
What I'm not going to do is get my panties in a wad over things I have no control over.
As respectfully as I am able, if you really believe that somehow the democrats are somehow morally superior you are certifiably delusional. The only difference between the two sides is who gets the money.
Fuck 'em all.

IRS to go after executives who use business jets for personal travel in new round of audits
Private jets sit parked at Scottsdale Airport Jan. 27, 2015, in Scottsdale, Ariz. IRS leadership said
FATIMA HUSSEIN Feb 21, 2024
WASHINGTON (AP) — First, there were trackers on Taylor Swift and other celebrities’ private jet usage. Now, there will be more scrutiny on executives’ personal use of business aircraft who write it off as a tax expense.
IRS leadership said Wednesday that the agency will start conducting dozens of audits on businesses’ private jets and how they are used personally by executives and written off as a tax deduction — as part of the agency’s ongoing mission of going after high-wealth tax cheats who game the tax system at the expense of American taxpayers.
The audits will focus on aircraft used by large corporations and high-income taxpayers and whether the tax purpose of the jet use is being properly allocated, the IRS says.
“At this time of year, when millions of hardworking taxpayers are working on their taxes, we want them to feel confident that everyone is playing by the same rules,” IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel said on a call with reporters to preview the announcement. Tax season began Jan. 29.
“These aircraft audits will help ensure high-income groups aren’t flying under the radar with their tax responsibilities,” he said.
There are more than 10,000 corporate jets in the US., according to the IRS, valued at tens of millions of dollars and many can be fully deducted.
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed during the Trump administration, allowed for 100% bonus depreciation and expensing of private jets — which allowed taxpayers to write off the cost of aircraft purchased and put into service between September 2017 and January 2023.
Werfel said the federal tax collector will use resources from Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act to more closely examine private jet usage — which has not been closely scrutinized during the past decade as funding fell sharply in the last decade.
“Our audit rates have been anemic,” he said on the call. An April 2023 IRS report on tax audit data states that “continued resource constraints have limited the agency’s ability to address high-end noncompliance” stating that in tax year 2018, audit rates for people making more than $10 million were 9.2%, down from 13.6% in 2012. And in the same time period, overall corporate audit rates fell from 1.3% to .6%.
Mike Kaercher, senior attorney advisor at the Tax Law Center at NYU said in a statement that the IRS should also revisit how it values personal use of corporate aircraft, beyond just how flights are reported.
“The current rules allow these flights to be significantly undervalued, enabling wealthy filers to pay much less in taxes than fair market value would dictate, and it’s within the IRS’ authority to revise these rules,” Kaercher said.
Werfel said audits related to aircraft usage could increase in the future depending on the results of the initial audits and as the IRS continues hiring more examiners.
“To be clear, that doesn’t mean everyone in a high-income category partnership or corporation is evading or avoiding their tax responsibility,” Werfel said. “But it does mean that there’s more work to do for the IRS to make sure people are paying what they owe.”"

It's unclear how many auto workers attended Trump's speech. A person in the crowd with a "union members for Trump" sign acknowledged she wasn't a union member. https://t.co/yWziQmqUSG — Craig Mauger (@CraigDMauger) September 28, 2023 Last week, Donald Trump announced a plan to compete with the second Republican presidential primary debate by speaking to union members in Michigan as the United Auto Workers wage a strike against Detroit’s “Big Three” auto manufacturers. The plan got a lot of attention, and it continued to be framed in the media as Trump reaching out to union workers, even after it was known that the speech would be held at a nonunion auto parts manufacturer. It was a win for Trump, though, who got several news cycles of coverage suggesting his record on labor issues was far better than it is. By the time Trump arrived, though, President Joe Biden had already spoken to striking workers on the picket line, a first for a sitting president. When asked if he would meet with Trump, UAW President Shawn Fain told CNN, “I see no point in meeting with him, because I don't think the man has any bit of care for what our workers care for, for what the working class stands for. He serves the billionaire class and that's what's wrong with this country.” Trump’s audience is allegedly composed of “around 500 former or current union members.” As the crowd gathered, NBC News reporter Vaughn Hillyard estimated that 20% of the people in the audience were UAW members, though just a few of those, he wrote, were currently on strike. “I don’t know where they’re at. But there are several — a handful,” a former auto worker and current Auto Workers for Trump activist told NBC News reporters. Upon taking the stage, Trump immediately went to his current favorite talking point, accusing Biden of killing auto jobs with policies favoring electric vehicles. "It doesn’t make a damn bit of difference what you get [out of UAW negotiations] cause you’re all going to be out of business,” he claimed. Being Trump, he didn’t stay on topic for long, peppering his speech with what passes for humor in his view—“I never heard of the word indictment, now I get indicted like every three days”—and a “Barack Hussein Obama” reference as if it was 2009, not 2023. But when he was on topic, the primary focus was not workers’ rights or the massive amounts the Big Three auto companies have been paying their top executives and dedicating to stock buybacks: It was electric vehicles, and his false claims about them. ”Donald Trump is lying about President Biden’s agenda to distract from his failed track record of trickle-down tax cuts, closed factories, and jobs outsourced to China,” a Biden-Harris campaign spokesperson responded to Trump in an emailed statement. “There is no ‘EV mandate.’ Simply put: Trump had the United States losing the EV race to China and if he had his way, the jobs of the future would be going to China. President Biden is delivering where Donald Trump failed by bringing manufacturing back home, and with it, good-paying jobs for the American people.”

I love hayley but I always think about that time she said at a concert that she’s very comfortable talking politics and I do think a large part of that is true but all of her political stances have been very US-based only with the exception of “the news” where the band referenced Ukraine. This is something that a lot of celebs do so I’m not blaming hayley alone on this but I remember when she rightfully called out trump on her insta stories multiple times for being a very loud and outspoken bigot but Biden is funding a genocide now so it’s disappointing that she’s not criticising him too. Biden might not be as loud of a racist as trump and desantis but the way he talked about the Palestinian people is dehumanising. A lot of white celebs are only brave enough to call out politicians who are very right wing but Biden is just as bad as them if you pay attention to his speeches and review his actions
I will never see celebs as a moral compass but I do think it’s very important for Americans to speak out cause knowing that Biden is using my tax dollars to fund the IDF makes me sick. I don't know how many times I sat in a history class, learning about genocides and wondered "how could anyone let this happen?" now I'm asking myself the same question while one is actively happening. The least the band could do is sign that artists4ceasefire letter and share ways to call Congress to demand a ceasefire. The band decided to release a song like “the news” and they’re gonna probably perform it hundreds of times again. They decided to be political in this era so it’s highly upsetting that they’re silent about all of this. Palestinian people are living in a nightmare situation and all they asked of us to use social media to share updates, to remember them and their culture and to amplify their voice. It’s such a simple request from people who are going through an ethnic cleansing.
if they keep performing “the news” next year and never speak on anything that’s happening right now, I’m gonna look at them very differently cause ignoring and moving on as if nothing happened is exactly what the IDF wants. They’re 3 white people from Nashville, do they think it’s unsafe for them to speak on this? Famous women of color like dua lipa, bella hadid, kehlani, and kelela are being harassed by zionist daily but they still share donation links and information cause they know it’s more important than the Israeli government's official account constantly tagging and bullying them. Hayley was with rep Justin Jones and he posted a caption “fighting fascism with @yelyahwilliams” a few weeks ago,  So where’s all of this energy when our president is giving money and weapons to Israel only
Thank you for sending this ask, I appreciate it.
The truth of the matter is, i’ve realized that Paramore only talk about things that affect them or their friends and are morally “just” or “right”. If they are gonna be labeled antisemites they aren’t gonna say anything, (let me reiterate there is nothing antisemitic about wanting justice for palestine, for the brutal capture & tortures to stop happening, for the genocide to stop happening) because they don’t want to look bad. Ultimately they are just three white people who are rich & sheltered and won’t talk about things that will get them in hot water like this. If Hayley was really comfortable talking about politics she’d put her money where her mouth is, as would any other member of Paramore, but that isn’t happening.
I feel obligated as someone who fucking cares about people to say something, seeing all of the videos of children being pulled from rubble, Palestinians being tortured by IDF, the IDF soldiers laughing and making fun tiktok videos like they aren’t raping and murdering and torturing and committing war crimes on the daily; i cannot be okay with that. Joe Biden is nothing but a slimey little snake and like many old white men before him he will never be anything but that to me. It doesn’t matter how much he panders or whatever, the blood is on his hands and he is complicit in Genocide of the Palestinian people.
But, like many white liberals who are sitting on their comfy couches taking “mental health breaks” cuz they can’t stand to see another video on social media about the war because it “bothers them too bad” all i have to say about it is: How do you think the people who are being fucking mass murdered, living in constant fear, who run from place to place in the Gaza strip praying that they aren’t going to be bombed when they find somewhere where they think they may be safe, for even a moment, until another bomb drops? So yeah, I’m not gonna be nice about this, because personally I don’t give a fuck about acting like it’s okay for them to be silent, because it isn’t and it never will be and I will remember this for the rest of their careers.
and personally, I don’t ever want to hear another political speech from them until they say something about this, because now it just feels like a load of bullshit.
I love Paramore but we are allowed to be critical of them.

Joe Biden’s signature climate policy, the Inflation Reduction Act, is doing what it’s supposed to do—boosting and decarbonizing the economy. It will help households save money and get off fossil fuels. The legislation will create millions of high-paying clean energy jobs through incentives and tax credits. In addition to materially improving Americans’ lives, the IRA is projected to avert about a billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  Unfortunately, it has one major political flaw: Normal people don’t know anything about it. ... The American public may simply be uninformed about the IRA because we don’t have strong feelings about it. And in our current information ecosystem, if we don’t love or hate a thing, we don’t know about it. Our social media algorithms are powered by feelings—and social media is the main way most of us get information now. ... The IRA needs to provoke much stronger feelings among the American public than it does. Democrats and climate advocates should emphasize the species, cities, pastimes, gardens, national parks, and foods that we love; everything that we could save, in part by decarbonizing society through policies like the IRA. It’s also important to stir the pot on the other side by mobilizing some hatred against the industries and Republicans that are trying to undo the IRA. ...

Nothing is on the horizon to block Iowa’s steady march to the right and off a cliff.
Gov. Kim Reynolds came off a historic legislative session that has Ron DeSantis calling the Tall Corn State the “Florida of the North.” There’s book banning, gay bashing, welfare demeaning, private school vouchers and more from solid majorities in both the House and Senate for her to celebrate.
The public appears to be rolling with the agenda, while holding reservations about the vouchers.
The state’s congressional delegation is entirely Republican.
It’s going to take a seismic event, or series of them, and a messianic messenger for Democrats to even get back in the conversation.
There are no statewide races on the 2024 ballot. Iowa will be flooded with conservative propaganda — it’s already started — with the Republican presidential nominating process. Being anti-woke, whatever that is, will be the thing. The environment will heighten Reynolds’s visibility and burnish her image as a politician of national prominence. Democrats will ignore Iowa because there’s nothing at play here.
Iowa needs a two-party system but doesn’t have one. That’s been a long time coming. The GOP has played the long game in rural states since 1980 by investing in media, messaging and organization. It’s paying off in flyover country.
If the election were held today, you would want to bet on Trump winning Iowa bigly.
The next legislative session will be just as harsh as Republicans try to fire up their base heading into the general elections. Reynolds wants to eliminate the state income tax, for starters, and again the public appears to agree with her. The loyal opposition can barely get a message through.
It will take something seismic and someone messianic for the Democrats to even get into the conversation.
Abortion? Perhaps. The Iowa Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on a bill that could ban abortion. Historically, abortion politics have not played well for Democrats in Iowa. It is not clear they can turn the issue to their advantage in statehouse races.
Education? Huge tax cuts are popular, but the bite will be felt in public schools as we dole out vouchers for private education. It won’t be an immediate disruption, more like a slow erosion that increases class sizes and closes rural schools with declining enrollment.
Gay rights? Eighty-three congregations, in places like Pocahontas and Marcus, just pulled out of the Iowa Methodist Conference over allowing gay pastors and marriage.
Economic issues? Voters are going with tax cuts in the absence of a strong Democratic message.
As for a messenger, the minority party has State Auditor Rob Sand, the only statewide Democratic officeholder whose authority was eviscerated by the legislature. Not many people seem too worked up about him being stripped of investigative authority. He is a Decorah native who has worked assiduously to develop a reputation as a moderate turkey hunter who eschews party politics.
Harold Hughes broke through in 1962 under somewhat similar circumstances with a campaign built around liquor by the drink. Hughes had a fire in his belly. Does Sand?
The only other elected Democrat of prominence who understands rural areas is Rep. JD Scholten of Sioux City. He has the fire in his belly but does not appear to be in the inner circle of Des Moines. He continues to make appearances around the state and is not afraid of being associated with labor unions. Democrats fail to appreciate how important western Iowa is to winning statewide elections, and how their abandonment of rural voters has led to their demise.
They have until 2026 to figure something out. Sure, a lot can happen to change things. Who knows what happens with Sen. Chuck Grassley, age 89? Or abortion politics. For now, the Republicans are having a ball while on a roll, and there isn’t a whole lot the other side is doing about it. They need someone to fly the flag and lead the charge out of the weeds, with a message that can be heard out here. Starting with: Whatever happened to the family farm, an open market and the good union jobs? Somebody needs to change the conversation.
