So, after being reminded of the insanity that is Oliver Bulleid's Leader Class, and by extension some of the stranger aspects of Bulleid's engines in general, I have spiraled off into thinking of a new headcanon / additional bit of characterization for Rebecca.

For anyone who doesn't know, Oliver Bullied was the Chief Mechanical Engineer for the Southern Railway starting in 1937, and is partially known for several of his designs featuring some unorthodox features, most notably his use of chain driven valve gear.

Rebecca is a Bulleid Light Pacific, so I feel it would fit to take some inspiration from the previous information about her builder, appropriately turned up to 11 for comedic effect and to fit the overall tone of the BWBA seasons of TTTE.

Consider:

Rebecca as a massive nerd / tinkerer / mad scientist of an engine, who is constantly experimenting with silly, outside the box, and very overly complicated solutions to problems, as well as just trying out various dumb ideas for the hell of it.

She notices her brakes are beginning to wear out and decided to try and extend the time before she has to get them fixed by instead stopping by throwing her wheels into reverse.

Pro: Less damage to brakes

Con: More damage to... everything else.

She hears about how the Skarloey Railway used to run gravity trains and decides to see how far the troublesome trucks can go on their own if released from the top of Gordon's Hill...

On the mainline...

Without telling anyone...

Maybe she spends a lot of time hanging around the Dieselworks of all places, because she's endlessly fascinated by the jury-rigged and patchwork repairs that have been made over the years to the work's equipment.

Den and Dart are confused by this, but feel very honored when Rebecca calls then "resourceful" and "innovative" for how they have kept the Dieselworks running.

There's even some support for this characterization in canon.

Rebecca is shown to be fascinated by the unique features of Harvey, Marion, and Belle in the episode What Rebecca Does and wishes she had something unique for herself.

She seems to have an appreciation for unusual designs built to solve specific problems and do special tasks.

Then there's this quote from Rebecca's introductory scene in the episode Confusion Without Delay:

“Hello, sir. And, uh, sorry, sir. I miscalculated how long it would take me to stop…by, uh, quite a lot!”

The use of "miscalculated" feels like it fits with what I've laid out so far, like she actually tried to do the math in her head to come to a precise stop and it just didn't work out.

Now, is all of this very silly and a bit dumb? Yes

But is it funny? Also yes

Not only that, but there's honestly some pretty good story potential here.

Like, what if there was an episode with Rebecca and Duck?

There could be a conflict between Ducks adherence to the tried-and-true and very practical Great Western Way, and Rebecca's desire to always think outside the box and try something new.

And Rebecca's trying to be respectful of and go along with Ducks way of doing things, but frankly she just keeps getting bored and ends up inevitably distracted with trying out he own new ideas.

Most of them don't work, and fail in comedic fashion.

But one of Rebecca's ideas actually looks like it could succeed...

Until Duck, but now tired of the delays to his work, interrupts and unintentionally causes the whole thing to fall apart.

The eventual resolution to this story could then come in the form of the Slip Coaches being brought into the mix.

The Slip Coaches, who are a product of the Great Western Railway, and yet are also an example of a seemingly strange and outside the box idea, which proved to be successful when given the chance.

The story could then conclude with the moral of how some ideas that seem stupid might just need a bit of extra time and patience to develop and refine them into a practical application.

a ramble on my personal canon that turned into a ramble about the production and universe implications of the TVS and RWS

*cracks knuckles despite not being able to* today i shall talk about my personal canon for ttte/rws because i'm in the mood for an infodump :sunglasses:

you may be wondering, jade, what the hell is this supposed to mean? basically it's me trying to stitch a patchwork of the classic series canon, hit era, cgi, rws, and my own oc stuff to my liking.

...and i'll also admit i wrote this really tired, but I wanted to infodump so bad. putting the rest below the cut!

so far, my most simple summary of it so far is that it's mostly the RWS with the timeline of the model series. things from the RWS happen in the order they happened in the TVS (albeit not with the exact same execution as the RWS or the TVS all the time). Series 5's events happen, as do series 6's and maybe some of series 7's? But also, events that didn't get adapted to the model series happen, as to characters, such as Bear and two entire railways. I also wanted to take some characters from hit era and beyond, albeit I'm not sure I have a complete list yet.

I'm also including the UHR, aka the Ulfstead Heritage Railway, my original smaller railway that kinda... happened. Basically, a variation on Toby's Discovery happens, and the controllers of the railways, not quite sure what to do with it, end up with an offer from my oc, Tiffany Lancaster. She offers to run the track and perhaps then some as a heritage railway. Restoration ensues! It connects to the Skarloey, as seemingly shown in the show, and the NWR. I also decided it runs around inside Ulfstead itself and a bit further south to the Ulfstead Castle and The Mansion, which I'm using the RWS canon for and saying they're a preserved castle and mansion-turned-expensive-fancypants-hotel respectively. Sorry, no Estate Railway here... maybe, I haven't watched relevant CGI episodes yet, but something about a castle on top of a mine sounds horribly structurally unstable. But it's not like anyone lives at that castle anyways.

Other things I'm consolidating include: Toby's Branch Line and the Arlesdale Railway run near each other, like in the 2014 map of Sodor. I've elected to put Toby's Old Line on Sodor like in the TVS. James's red coat of paint comes after his accident, like in the RWS and CGI canons. Thomas just kinda Showed Up, like in the RWS. And Henry doesn't need the special coal post-rebuild like in the RWS, albeit he still might have some occasional problems.

honestly, i just wanted to write this because I was sorting out my OC event timeline for my fanbooks, realized I've been using the TVS timeline the entire time, remembered I had a personal canon, and then went wild assigning series to events and year estimates.

And, to be fair, in-universe, these stories were NOT written at the time they happened or anywhere near 'em until much later into my fanbooks, if at all. My stories are written in modern day both in-universe and out because of whatever the heck the Secondman got up to, so this is a bit loose! And setting them in more vague years, like the TVS did, might help me in the long run somehow. Toward the Christopher Awdry part of the RWS's run, more stories were written just so the TVS could have stories to base things off of, so I'm genuinely unsure if they're supposed to be records of a past year in the RWS canon or set closer to the year they were written or what. I may have worded that weird because I'm tired, but basically, if those stories were written to be scrambled in with the others in the early TVS, does that mean that they took place during different times rather than when one would think the books are set?

Despite being the guy who posted the links to RWS resources, I still don't know as much as I'd like to, LOL. And consolidating multiple canons, while fun, is tiring. Proteus: *keeping a eye on his counter part. Seeing him slowly control his hunger for human and angel meat.* I'm glad you're working on your health and hunger my dear friend. *he said before feeling his kid pull on his robe.*

Other Proteus: Yeah I got a bit better....

*Patchwork he looked up at his papa.*

Patchwork: ..... Hi papa...

Proteus: alright I'll go too him, just stop hurting yourself please..*he said, like a worried brother.* come with me patchwork it's cold for you..*he said softly as he picked him up softly, talking him back inside and too talk to pinchy.*

Proteus: You know your father was supposed too be home by now, but I heard that thomas is in the works, I'm going too go to him. It's clear that he's overworking himself.

Diesel: *He looked like he wanted to cry but he didn't. He sighed quietly and said* alright... Please try to convince him to come home...

Patchwork: *he tried his best to cheer up Diesel*

Patchwork, is your dad available? Because I need him for a super serious problem. Edward is getting mind messed up by something and is now very violent whenever people get near to Thomas. I tried reasoning with him but it's like trying to talk to a brick wall. I would love the help from your dad.

Patchwork: I don't know where papa is.... I'm with Diesel right now and he's talking to Duncan..

D10: …So is this Proteus just going to stay with us? In the shed near my house….

Pinchy: Yes he is… do you have a problem with it.

D10: …. To be honest.. kinda because of what I heard about what he has done and he also eats people…. Doesn't that worry you a lot.???

Pinchy: … *he looked down with a look, a look that he knew that D10 had somewhat of a point.* ….*sigh* … just give him a chance…. And besides he'll be in the sheds for most of the time you won't know he's even here..

D10: Well alright … but if he hurts or does anything worse to anyone here he's immediately out of here.. understand?

Pinchy: Of course I understand…

*Patchwork was wondering why they were talking about Proteus. At first he thought they were talking about his papa but then quickly he realized that this Proteus was not his papa nor anywhere near. Patchwork peek outside and saw the shed from a far and decided that he wanted to see this Proteus. He quickly snuck outside and quickly went to the shed.*

Patchwork: *He stopped once he got to the shed.* Oh the door is a little bit open…. -???? - *He saw something glowing. He went inside the shed and then he realized there were feathers.* Whoa I never seen feathers like these…

*Then Patchwork heard a noise and soon he saw a silhouette in the shadows moving around. It seemed like the silhouette was trying to hide but was failing because of the halo above its head.*

Patchwork: …. *He was nervous but he was willing to see this Proteus for himself.* …. H-Hello? … I know you're in here….

*No one responded and everything stood still.*

Patchwork: *he wasn't going to give up that easily he went more inside of the sheds until he saw him.* !!!- …. Are you Proteus that everyone I hear is talking about?

Proteus: *He was very sad to the point that the magic around his head wasn't really showing like it used to be. Blood was all over his right hand from picking feathers off of his wings. He didn't seem to really notice Patchwork at first.*

Patchwork: uhmm…. Excuse me sir..

Proteus: !!!- *He panicked when he saw patchwork and he only started to panic more when he realized he was a corrupted. Even though he was panicking a lot he tried his best to stay calm and try to calmly tell Patchwork to go away.* Oh… Hey- Hey kid you're not supposed to be in here you should probably go…. *He tried to hide himself by using his wings.*

Patchwork: …. *He didn't seem to listen when he was told to go away. He was too amazed when he saw this Proteus. This Proteus was nothing alike to his papa.* You're way different from Papa…papa is not afraid and also you look very different…. You don't have very long hair either…

Proteus: *He soon realized that his papa was the other Proteus and he only felt worse but he realized that this kid wasn't going to leave him alone so he decided to do a little bit talking with him even when he was talking to him he's still trying to convince him to go away.* Oh so your papa is the other Proteus? Well if I were you- you should probably go your papa… doesn't like me very much and he'll be very upset if he sees you with me-

Patchwork: *He gets closer to him.* Why does my papa hate you? Did you do something bad?

Proteus: *he knew that as much as he wanted Patchwork to leave he wasn't going to have that.* … *Sigh* … come here kid… *He carefully picked up Patchwork.*

Patchwork: *He finally got a good look at this Proteus and realized that this Proteus wasn't doing so well he saw all the injuries and also the blood dripping from Proteus mouth and nose.* …..

Proteus: *He tried to sit down in a comfortable area so his body hurt less.* …. You're papa hates me because I'm a failure.. A disappointment … and also Pinchy thinks the same as well… I don't blame them though I mean it's true–

Patchwork: But why? Why do they think that.. or why do you think that?

Proteus: I think it's obvious kid I'm a curse angel and curse angels ARE disappointments to everyone and to everything *He coughed up more blood.* …. *Sigh* It's better if I rot here and YOU leave me alone…

Patchwork: But… but I don't want to leave you alone! You seem so sad… *He looked at his wings.* And you are badly hurt..

Proteus: Trust me kid there's nothing to worry - *He coughed up more blood but this time it was a lot worse.* …. N- nothing to worry about… besides you don't want to be with a curse angel … *he slowly lay down on the ground and slowly breathing.*

Patchwork: But you're badly sick I should find my papa he’ll help you-

Proteus: NO JUST DON’T!! *He looked frightened. He begged as he didn't want to trouble or annoy the other Proteus.*

Patchwork:.... B- But how do I help you?

Proteus: Don’t… I’ll get better soon.. *he said as more blood dripped out of his mouth. He tried to get up but he couldn't. He fell back down to the ground.* I just need rest that is all….

Patchwork: *He was very scared and then he started to cry. He had no idea what to do but cry. He felt bad that he couldn’t help him.*

Proteus; *He felt bad when Patchwork began to cry, He slowly lifted his wing and rested the none bloody side of his wing on Patchwork and slowly slide Patchwork closer to him and patted his head.* Don’t cry kid… I’m going to be alright… I just don’t feel good at the moment..

Patchwork: *He slowly calmed down and looked at him with a sad look.* But.. but when will you get better?

Proteus: Who knows…. But we can’t tell anyone okay? No ONE! We don’t want them to deal with me… *He felt very tired.* You should go now kid. I need to rest …. Ok?

Patchwork: …..Okay.. Can I come see you tomorrow? Please..

Proteus: *sigh* … Well.. *He wasn’t sure if that would be a good idea. Proteus didn’t even know if he was going to wake up tomorrow. He looked at Patchwork with a tired and sad look.* I don’t know, kid…. I think I’m going to be so tired that I won’t wake up tomorrow…

Patchwork: oh.. Well I’ll check on you tomorrow and if you are awake maybe we can play a game outside!!

Proteus: *He gave a weak smile.* Y- Yeah that sounds nice…. You should go now the others are probably worried about you..

Patchwork: Okay.. See you later then…. *He left and quickly went back to the others.*

Proteus: ….See ya… *Heavily sighed and closed his eyes crying quietly as the pain in his body got worse and worse. He fainted from all the blood and pain that his brain or his body couldn’t handle causing him to faint.*

*For the rest of the day no one came to check on him. Proteus lay in his own pool of blood filled with his own feathers, alone with his own thoughts he knew that no one would want to check on him besides Patchwork. The blood soon soaked up into Proteus's suit and the rest of his body. Proteus woke up a few times during this when he did wake up he cried and cried he quietly begged the pain to stop. He spit out the blood from his mouth that came from the puddle of his own blood he lay in. He didn't dare call for help even if he wanted to; he knew that if he did it would be like yelling in the deep underwater to someone up on the surface. So he quietly cried himself to sleep once more and rest in his own blood.*

Proteus: I'm.... I- I'm .... I'm.. pathetic.. *he said as he fell asleep.*
