An effective strategy that marketers like to use when brand building is content marketing. And with a quick search on Google, you can find many articles and blog posts on how it may be better than traditional marketing today. As a car enthusiast, this blog post will expose the content marketing strategies that automotive industries use for their audience to see (not limited to brands such as Nissan, Toyota, etc.).

For those who aren’t familiar with content marketing, Google defines it as a type of marketing that involves the creation and sharing of online material (videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its products or services. Unlike the traditional marketing that we see everyday such as TV commercials and ads, content marketing is what we WANT to see. The content coming from this relies on being valuable and compelling because it not only makes the audience aware and more intelligent of a brand but it makes it easier for them to do business and be loyal.

A great example of content marketing can be seen in a video by Subaru called Subaru: A Harrowing Story of Safety. The content shown here is valuable and compelling to the audience because even after a horrific accident that most likely would’ve killed the victim if he were to drive any other sedan, walks away with little to no harm done. The video does not necessarily say “you should buy a Subaru because we offer 0% APR for the first 6 months and $0 down” but “Subaru can keep you safe from the apocalypse too.”

Looking beyond the automotive industries, we have brands such as Super Street and Tunercrate. Super Street is the best tuner car magazine since 1996 and their Instagram has a following of 3.2 million. Their magazines release every month and features highly modified and illegal cars that I’m sure everyone would love to own. Super Street is able to amass a large and loyal audience through their social media by consistently posting (10587 posts on Instagram) and not telling their followers to go subscribe to their magazine every single post. Although Tunercrate is not as big as Super Street (34.9k followers on Instagram), we can find them using a strategy that is related to content marketing known as rent-to-own. This allows a company to “rent” another company’s audience so they can be aware of their product/brand and they can convert to their own audience. Tunercrate, in this example, actually collaborates with Super Street and this allowed for brand awareness and connecting with more people. 

Although content marketing may seem like the Holy Grail in today’s marketing world, that does not mean that traditional marketing is useless because both give out information that the audience should know.
