Kilink İstanbul'da aka "Kilink in Istanbul" (1967) -- screen grab.
If you've never seen this movie, you're in for a treat with its pirated versions of assorted John Barry James Bond cues; 'Superhero', it's bizarre mash-up of Batman, Superman and CC Beck's Captain Marvel; and, of course, the vicious, murderous, skeleton-clad criminal mastermind, KILINK -- a Turkish bootleg of the Italian character, Killing, who is an Italian rip-off of Kriminal, another Italian character. Everything here is a xerox of a xerox. Even this copy of the film which is a dodgy, murky rip with random, bad, jump-cut edits -- which is exactly how movies like this should be watched! Settle in and ENJOY.

Gone is the stereotype of Neanderthals tearing into raw tubers or gnawing on a leg of roasted animal meat. Microscopic analysis of ancient food scraps unearthed from a hearth in Shanidar Cave, in Iraq, has provided the first real indication of complex cooking – and thus of food culture – among Neanderthals.
According to Dr Ceren Kabukcu, of the University of Liverpool, who carried out the analysis, a typical dish would probably have contained a pounded pulp of pulses, nuts and grass seeds, bound together with water and flavoured with bitter tannins from the seed coats of pulses such as beans or peas, and the sharp taste of wild mustard.
Gathering such ingredients must have been time-consuming. “There are lots of species out at Shanidar in the savannah-type vegetation, and I’d guess the Neanderthals would have gathered whatever they came across and cooked with it,” said Prof Chris Hunt, of Liverpool John Moores University, who coordinated the excavation.
While lacking easy access to a savannah, I do have the convenience of several health food shops and a Turkish mini-mart within minutes of my house. Sadly, these didn’t stock terebinth (wild pistachio) or bitter vetch (a legume), but commercial raw pistachios and puy lentils provided acceptable substitutes.
Tucked away at the back of our larder, I found a half-empty packet of fava beans with a use-by data of 2010 – not quite neolithic, but ancient enough.
Kabukcu and Hunt suggested combining these – or other types of dried beans or peas (not marrowfat) – with an ancient whole grain such as spelt, einkorn wheat berries or barley, in default of grass seed. Neanderthals also used wild almonds and mustard seeds in their cooking.
Interesting to see that they were able to identify bitter vetch among the pulses consumed by Neanderthals. I know the plant (I think specifically the root?) was used in medieval Scotland as an appetite suppressant during lean times. I wonder if our hominid cousins ever used it this way too.

Books of the year 2022
I'm not sure where the year went, but here we are again at my books of the year list.
Like my previous books of the year posts, date of publication is not relevant for this list. This year I had to reread about 70 Choose Your Own Adventure books for a project - they are still as smart, funny, and engaging as ever, but as my love for those is so well documented I haven't included any here.
So, these are the best books to find me - for the first time - in 2022.
#1 - My favourite thing is monsters - Volume 1 - Emil Ferris (2017)
Tumblr media
This book is truly incredible, but not an easy read.
Drawn mostly with Bic ballpoint pen, it breaks the conventions of graphic novels in many ways. On the surface Monsters is a coming of age story set in 60's Chicago, but it is a multi-layered narrative that catalogues monsters in all forms - those in pulp comics, those responsible for the horrors of the holocaust, and monsters that enable brutal sexual exploitation and abuse.
It's embedded with sadness, weighed with the heaviness of human struggle, but shot through with light and love. A genuinely important work.
Volume 2 is forthcoming, I hope in 2023. If so, I can't see it not making next year's list.
#2 - Acting Class - Nick Drnaso (2022)
Tumblr media
I loved Nick's previous books - Beverly, and Sabrina - but Acting Class, for me, surpasses both. In Acting Class, as you'd expect, a disparate group of strangers join an amateur acting class. But what the title doesn't give away is the David Lynch like sense of uncanny, an under the surface oddness, which makes the ongoing narrative full of tension. It's compelling in every way.
  #3 - The Labyrinth - Simon Stålenhag (2021)
Tumblr media
All of Simon's other books have made my previous books of the year lists, The Labyrinth deserves its place on this year's list too.
In short The Labyrinth is a brutal sci-fi graphic novel, in which guilt and redemption collide. The art and words work together to build a darker world, where everyday horror seeps into an alternate past future.
  #4 - The Confidence Men - Margalit Fox (2021)
Tumblr media
During the 1st World War, two British officers conspired to escape a remote Turkish prisoner of war camp. What follows is a true story of an elaborately planned, long running con, involving seances, spirits, and sleight of hand trickery. It's an outstandingly researched and written book. Film rights have been optioned by Fox, which doesn't surprise me, but the detail in the writing is a joy.
  #5 - Magritte in 400 images - Julie Waseige (2021)
Tumblr media
Rene Magritte has been one of my favourite artists since discovering his work as a teenager, tucked away in the tiny Abergele library  in a book on surrealist painters.
This book covers a huge amount of his output, in chronological order. It's interesting to track his obsessions and motifs as they recur and develop. Magritte's use of the ordinary made strange creates a quiet unease, at odds with the more fleshy surrealism of someone like Dali. Magritte's work often playfully explores aspects of illusion and unreality, an area I'm constantly drawn to.  And the best children's book we've read this last year? My oldest daughter is now 6, she's learnt to read using the Biff, Chip and Kipper series (created by Roderick Hunt and illustrated by Alex Brychta in 1986). The illustrations are full of incidental details that are brilliant asides to a world bigger than the story. Creating compelling stories using a limited vocabulary is a constraint greater in challenge than anything used by George Perec.
My daughter's favourite books have been the Pizazz series by Sophy Henn.
Tumblr media
Imagine a girl who is a reluctant super-hero, embarrassed by her super-power (glitter jazz hands anyone?), always wearing her too long cape (chosen by her mum), having to save the world before school, and still forced to do homework. We read them all in a month, thanks to the well stocked Hackney library. Pizazz is funny, smart, and identifiable.

Destiny || Audition Para
Setting: Haringey, Sometime Before The Plot Drop  Word Count: 681 Words Note: If Kerem ever says he’s over Nevra he’s a liar
When the opportunity presents itself, you will take Haringey back. And this time it will be yours.
There were days when that sentence haunted Kerem more than he wanted to admit. He knew that there was a reason that Azra was in charge - she had the charisma, the smile, all he had to do was glare from behind her back and things would get done. A quiet brute, not one to cross, the one who knew 50 ways to hurt someone with a pencil.
It was a reputation that Kerem knew was helpful, one that kept him alive. Waiting. Planning. Ready to take back what was theirs.
When the opportunity presents itself, you will take Haringey back. And this time it will be yours.
Again the sentence rang in his mind, and he glared at the sidewalk trying to banish it. Trying to forget that earlier that morning he had been given orders from one of the Ruthacunts. Or that afternoon he’d had to play nice with the Russians. And just now he’d passed a French fuck on the street acting as if he owned Haringey. And it made his blood boil.
His home was too crowded. And the pests needed to be eradicated.
Of course, he had heard stories. The streets filled with blood as Haringey was taken from them by force. The betrayal of so many of theirs for the thought that they’d get a better life elsewhere.
The betrayal of Nevra.
His fist clenched as he continued walking, not allowing himself to think of his ex. She had made her choice and left a pain that nothing would truly ever fix. Once upon a time, they’d have a life together. He had imagined them ruling the borough side-by-side. Buth e knew better now, knew better than to make those kinds of plans.
Any coup needed to be calculated thought through and planned. Their numbers weren’t what they once were, a dwindling number that Kerem focused on more often than he should. A part of him had to wonder if that was why Azra hadn’t considered making a move to get things back. That they needed to recruit before they could take on the all-powerful Rutherfords.
But a darker part of his mind had to wonder if she had become complacent. If she had decided to welcome their forced alliance. If she was the next betrayal he was going to have to be ready for it. And truthfully, Kerem wasn’t sure he would be able to survive if it was. Once again he banished the thought, the one that he had crept into his mind entirely too often. He chalked it up to the paranoia that came from his failed engagement, from the trust that had been broken. Azra wasn’t Nevra, he wasn’t going to lose the other half of their duo. Or at least that was what he told himself. He had to, he wouldn’t follow her otherwise.
“Look at that, it’s Azra’s lapdog,” a voice said, interrupting Kerem’s thoughts. He realized he was outside his flat, and that a Rutherford had been waiting for him. He didn’t know the one, but he had enough of a bad day that he didn’t even listen to why he was there. Was it orders? Was it to mock him? Kerem’s fist didn’t let him find out, the sickening crunch of the man’s nose was enough to ease his emotions.
He knew he was better than this, losing control. But this had gone on long enough. It was clear, and the gang was becoming restless.
Their time was coming soon. It had to be.
When the opportunity presents itself, you will take Haringey back. And this time it will be yours.
It was a prophecy, it had to be. One that Kerem knew that he would have to fulfill himself. It was only a matter of time.
One day he would lose the control he had held onto for so long, that he would betray the oppressors. And in true Turkish fashion - he would beat them to a bloody fucking pulp.

See media help. "Misirlou" (Greek: Μισιρλού  Turkish: Mısırlı 'Egyptian'  Arabic: مصر Miṣr 'Egypt'[1]) is a folk song[2] from the Eastern Mediterranean region. The original author of the song is not known, but Arabic, Greek, and Jewish musicians were playing it by the 1920s. The earliest known recording of the song is a 1927 Greek rebetiko/tsifteteli composition. There are also Arabic belly dancing, Albanian, Armenian, Serbian, Persian, Indian and Turkish versions of the song. This song was popular from the 1920s onwards in the Arab American, Armenian American and Greek American communities who settled in the United States. The song was a hit in 1946 for Jan August, an American pianist and xylophonist nicknamed "the one-man piano duet". It gained worldwide popularity through Dick Dale's 1962 American surf rock version, originally titled "Miserlou", which popularized the song in Western popular culture; Dale's version was influenced by an earlier Arabic folk version played with an oud. Various versions have since been recorded, mostly based on Dale's version, including other surf and rock versions by bands such as the Beach Boys, the Ventures, and the Trashmen, as well as international orchestral easy listening (exotica) versions by musicians such as Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman. Dale's surf rock version was heard in the 1994 film Pulp Fiction. History Name Misirlou (Μισιρλού), due to the suffix "ou", is the feminine form (in Greek[3]) of Misirlis (Μισιρλής- a surname) which comes from the Turkish word Mısırlı, which is formed by combining Mısır ("Egypt" in Turkish, borrowed from Arabic مِصر‎ Miṣr) with the Turkish -lı suffix, literally meaning "Egyptian". Therefore, the song is about an Egyptian woman. The original Turkish word Mısırlı is, however, genderless. Composition The folk song has origins in the Eastern Mediterranean region of the Ottoman Empire, but the original author of the song is not known. There is evidence that the folk song was known to Arabic musicians, Greek rebetiko musicians and Jewish klezmer musicians by the 1920s.[4] The claim in some sources that the tune derives from the song "Bint Misr" ("Egyptian Girl") written by Egyptian musician Sayed Darwish is thought to be incorrect.[5] The earliest known recording of the song was by the rebetiko musician Theodotos ("Tetos") Demetriades (Greek: Θεόδοτος ("Τέτος") Δημητριάδης) in 1927. Demetriades, an Ottoman Greek, was born in Istanbul, Ottoman Empire, in 1897, and he resided there until he moved to the United States in 1921,[6] during a period when most of the Greek speaking population fled the emerging Turkish state. It is likely that he was familiar with the song as a folk song before he moved to the United States. As with almost all early rebetika songs (a style that originated with the Harry James recorded and released "'Misirlou" in 1941 on Columbia 36390, and the song peaked at No. 22 on the U.S. chart.[8] In 1946, pianist Jan August recorded a version of the song on Diamond Records (Diamond 2009), which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Jockey charts in the U.S.[9] In 1951, Turkish-Jewish polyglot singer Darío Moreno recorded a version with lyrics sung in French. 'Anatomy of a Fall' wins Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival
CANNES
Justine Triet's “Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d'Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in a ceremony Saturday that handed the festival's prestigious top prize to a twisty French Alps courtroom drama.
“Anatomy of a Fall,” which stars Sandra Hüller as a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death, is only the third film directed by a woman to win the Palme d'Or. One of the two previous winners, Julia Ducournau, was on this year's jury.
Cannes' Grand Prix, its second prize, went to Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a chilling Martin Amis adaptation about a German family living next door to Auschwitz.
The awards were decided by a jury presided over by two-time Palme winner Ruben Östlund, the Swedish director who won the prize last year for “Triangle of Sadness.” The ceremony preceded the festival's closing night film, the Pixar animation “Elemental.”
The jury prize went to Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves," a deadpan love story about a romance that blooms in a loveless workaday world where dispatches from the war in Ukraine regularly play on the radio.
Best actor went to veteran Japanese star Koji Yakusho, who plays a reflective, middle-aged Tokyo man who cleans toilets in Wim Wenders' “Perfect Days.” Wenders' film is a gentle, quotidian character study.
The Turkish actor Merve Dizdar took best actress for the Nuri Bilge Ceylan's “About Dry Grasses.” Ceylan's expansive tale is set in snowy eastern Anatolia about a teacher, Samet (Deniz Celiloğlu), accused of misconduct by a young female student. Dizdar plays as a friend both attracted and repelled by Samet.
“The character I portray in the film is someone who is fighting for her life and she's overcome a lot of difficulties. Under normal circumstances, I would have had to work hard on this character,” said Dizdar.
“I understand what it's like to be a woman in this area of the country,” she continued. “I would like to dedicate this prize to all the women who are fighting to exist and overcome difficulties in this world and to retrain hope.”
Tumblr media
Vietnamese-French director Tràn Anh Hùng took best director for “Pot-au-Feu," a lush, foodie love story starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel and set in a 19th century French gourmet château.
Best screenplay was won by Yuji Sakamoto for “Monster.” Sakamoto penned Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda's nuanced drama, with shifting perspectives, about two boys struggling for acceptance in their school at home. “Monster” also won the Queer Palm, an honor bestowed by journalists for the festival's strongest LGBTQ-themed film.
Quentin Tarantino, who won Cannes' top award for “Pulp Fiction," attended the ceremony to present a tribute to filmmaker Roger Corman. Tarantino praised Corman for filling him and countless moviegoers with “unadulterated cinema pleasure.”
“My cinema is uninhibited, full of excess and fun,” said Corman, the independent film maverick. “I feel like this what Cannes is about.”
The festival's Un Certain Regard section handed out its awards on Friday, giving the top prize to Molly Manning Walker's debut feature, “How to Have Sex.”
Saturday’s ceremony drew to close a Cannes edition that hasn't lacked spectacle, stars or controversy.
The biggest wattage premieres came out of competition. Martin Scorsese debuted his Osage murders epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a sprawling vision of American exploitation with Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Harrison Ford’s Indy farewell, launched with a tribute to Ford. Wes Anderson premiered “Asteroid City.”
The festival opened on a note of controversy. “Jeanne du Barry,” a period drama co-starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, played as the opening night film. The premiere marked Depp's highest profile appearance since the conclusion of his explosive trial last year with ex-wife Amber Heard.
The selection of “Jeanne du Barry” added to criticisms of Cannes for being too hospitable to men accused of abusive behavior.

Borekas, 15030 Ventura Blvd, Ste 25, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403
Tumblr media
I’ve had my share of borekas, boreks, boureks, boregs, etc. but I haven’t had one quite like Borekas in Sherman Oaks. That’s because they created their own dough rather than using the usual phyllo dough. Their dough is described as a cross between phyllo and croissant dough. Imagine a giant flaky hot croissant merging with Mediterranean flavors and you’ll understand why Borekas has been selling out of their Israeli-style bourekas.
So you already know that Borekas makes their own dough. They also make their own cheese. And the bourekas are larger and fresh out of the oven. The bourekas are $12 each. There are four kinds: cultured cheese & za’atar; fungi, onion & truffle; potato & brown butter; spinach & cheese) come with a hard-boiled egg, pickles, tomato pulp, and harissa. They also sell beverages (e.g., Turkish coffee, ayran, soda) and pickles.
They thought of a way to improve and elevate traditional borekas! The boreks I’ve had in the past are small and cold, with thin layers of phyllo and a small amount of filling, typically cheese and spinach. They were usually dry as well.
Spinach & cheese boreka ($12): Let’s start with the crispy, hot, cheese boureka cut into five pieces (for easier dipping). It’s baked to a gorgeous golden brown color. The layers of dough are thin and crispy but the butter keeps the dough from being dry. The feta cheese wasn’t too salty and it oozed out. The spinach was fine – there wasn’t that much of it. Didn’t understand the tomato pulp since it was plain but I mixed their harissa into it and it was so good as a dipping sauce – lots of interesting spices and some heat. The hard-boiled egg was dusted with salt & pepper – made things more substantial but I would have preferred soft-boiled eggs. The dill pickle was crunchy & sour, a good contrast to the buttery, cheesy boureka.
Borekas is a takeout window in a strip mall. The sidewalk seating is limited and no frills (the seats are milk crates). They open at 9 AM and close when they sell out. To avoid being disappointed, call and prepay. Service was friendly. It took a few tries to get through to them over the phone (would be nice if online ordering were available). I could smell the butter from over a block away. The food is kosher/ Cholov Israel.
5 out of 5 stars. By Lolia S.

CAROB FOR SALE IN Guadalajara, Mexico
The Carob fruit (also commonly called the Bosker) has a taste and texture that has been coveted for centuries. When dried, Carob pods have a chocolate-like flavor that can be used as sweetener in baked goods, drinks and other dishes. Carob pods have a dark brown color and contain tiny beans inside. They may be stored for six months to a year before being ground up for use. Dried Carob pods are also stand-alone treats to snack on. Here at Turkish Carob, we proudly carry Dried Carob pods shipped fresh worldwide. Get yours from our trusted suppliers and start enjoying this healthy and sweet snack year-round now!
When you love chocolate, it's hard to find a replacement with the same flavor and mouth-feel, right? Enter carob. Not chocolate, not really. But a good place to start. In fact, there are plenty of times when I choose carob instead. Why? Unlike chocolate, carob is naturally sweet, low in fat, high in fiber, has calcium, and most importantly to me, no caffeine. And because chocolate is linked to migraines and caffeine-sensitivity for some people, carob definitely has its advantages. Carob comes from the pod of a tree that grows along the Mediterranean Sea. The pod contains a sweet, edible pulp. Once dried and roasted, the pulp is ground into a powder called carob flour (but more commonly referred to as "carob powder"). It's similar to cocoa powder in color and can be substituted one-for-one in recipes, but carob is unique with its own special flavor and texture. If you've never tried carob, you're in for a treat. It's sweet, mild and packed with pectin, a soluble fiber. Traditionally, it was used to soothe an upset stomach.

Nutritional characterization of carobs and traditional carob products
Carob fruits are characterized by high sugar content (48%–56%) (mainly sucrose, glucose, and fructose), 3%–4% protein, a lowfat content (0.2%–0.6%), low content of alkaloids, and high content of dietary fibers, especially in the seeds. Specifically, the pulp is composed of sugars, polyphenols (e.g., tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids), and minerals (e.g. K, Ca, Mg, Na, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn), whereas the seed contains proteins, dietary fibers, polyphenols, and minerals and is free of gluten.
Carob powder is a valuable source of vitamins E, D, C, Niacin, B6, and folic acid; vitamins A, B2, and B12 are provided in lower levels. Carob powder oil is composed of 17 fatty acids, mainly oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acid at 40.45%, 23.19%, 11.01%, and 3.08%, respectively (Youssef, El‐Manfaloty, & Ali, 2013). A number of cyclitols are also present in carob beans. The major cyclitol is D‐pinitol (3‐O‐methyl‐D‐chiro‐inositol) with multiple health benefits.
The endosperm of the seed contains the water‐soluble mucus, known as locust bean gum (LBG), which is a polysaccharide (galactomannan) consisting of 16%–20% D‐galactose and 80%–84% D‐mannose. It is created from seed processing and is a natural additive (E410) (Salinas, Carbas, Brites, & Puppo, 2015). It is widely used in the food industry as thickener, stabilizer, and gelling or dispersing agent, and its labeling is compulsory. LBG has many applications in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, film emulsions, paints, polishes, ceramics, and adhesives.
Many studies have shown that carobs and their products can promote human health and help prevent specific chronic diseases. In particular, they show antiproliferative and apoptotic activity against cancer cells, they are suggested to treat diarrhea symptoms, and they present antihyperlipidemia and antidiabetic effects due to their high antioxidants, polyphenols, and high content in fibers. Therefore, they are considered ideal food for people with diabetes (Youssef et al., 2013). Carob flour (from carob seeds) is used to manufacture dietetic products and products for celiac patients (gluten‐free products).
Carob is an indigenous drought‐ and temperature‐tolerant tree cultivated in Cyprus for centuries. In the past, it significantly benefited the agricultural economy of the island. It was widely known as the “black gold” of Cyprus. In recent years, carob's health benefits and nutritional value are being highlighted and therefore traditional carob‐based food products end up in the market.

Turkish Chicken Kebab (Tavuk Şiş)
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs 1 large onion 3 cloves garlic 1/2 cup plain yogurt, or whole milk 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons tomato paste or 2 tablespoons pepper/eggplant paste 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon kosher salt, more to taste 1 tsp of ottoman spice Sumac, dried oregano, and paprika, for garnish
Recipe
Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels. Cut the meat into 1-inch pieces. Set aside.
Using the finest grater possible, grate the onion and garlic cloves over a medium bowl.
Pour the pulp and juice into a fine mesh strainer and, using a wooden spoon, press out the juice into a medium bowl. Discard the onion and garlic pulp; reserve the juice.
Stir together the onion-garlic juice, yogurt, oil, tomato paste, black pepper, paprika, and salt.
Add the cubed chicken and toss to coat.
Cover the bowl and refrigerate it for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight for maximum flavor.
Prepare a medium (350°F to 375°F) gas or charcoal grill fire. If using bamboo skewers, soak skewers in water for 30 minutes so they don't catch fire on the grill.
Remove the chicken pieces from the marinade and thread them onto soaked bamboo kebab skewers or metal skewers. The chunks of chicken can touch each other, but don’t put them too close together to ensure they cook through. Discard any remaining marinade.
Sprinkle the kebabs generously with salt and place on pre heated grill. Grill evenly on all sides, about 12 minutes total.
Garnish with sumac, dried oregano, and paprika, if desired, and serve.
For grilled vegetables: oil, citrus, and ottoman spices.

Suleyman and Hurrem Muhtezem Yuzyl
In the Turkish TV show Magnificent Century, I really don't think that Suleyman knows which way is up at times.
Tumblr media
He's always, regarding Hurrem, a doubting Susan, until the last moments that is. And by then, she's sick and dying. Up until that moment he'd always sided with his family. But one by one in this show, they proved him wrong.
This however has no bearing on the real life couple. This is only with regard to the TV drama.
Tumblr media
During the course of the series Hurrem has been beaten to a pulp by Mahidevran, poisoned by Gulshah while doing Mahidevran's bidding and had a dagger pulled on her.
Tumblr media
They've tried to marry her off and thrown her in the dungeon. They killed her horse and set fire to the woman. They cast a spell on her - actually black smoke incense blowing out into her bedroom making her crazy and hallucinate.
Tumblr media
They deliberately set bandits on her in an attempt to kill her. Bit by bit the worst culprits turn out to be Ibrahim and Suleyman's family, namely his mother and all his sisters. They are vile and treat Hurrem horribly. Hatice even has her kidnapped. Thank goodness for M. Bali Bey, who like a dog with a bone, for the second time rescues Hurrem and brings her back.
And they're all wondering why she lashed out at them all, behaving like she did.
Tumblr media
If she schemed and plotted, given her treatment from them, who'd blame her?
Most of their antics backfire and only serves to drive the girl closer to Suleyman.
Tumblr media
In the end Hurrem winds up being the legal wife of the Sultan and it all hits back against them as she systematically watches as they all fall as her powerful hold on everything builds.
But on the surface, Suleyman always seems oblivious as to who is causing all the misfortune that befalls Hurrem. He seems reluctant to believe the worst of his family.
He always gets angry at Hurrem and tests her loyalty to him, time and time again. But Hurrem is loyal to a fault with Suleyman and their children. She even willingly drank what she thought was poison for him. What drives Hurrem is love, but she is possessive and doesn't share well. She lashes out at anyone who she thinks would hurt her children, or threaten Suleyman's position on the throne or take him from her. She tells Suleyman many times - if there is no Suleyman, there is no Hurrem. She threatened to kill herself rather than share him with another.
Her behavior in this respect is made worse when Suleyman continues to sleep with other women while with Hurrem. A polygamous society, he would not believe that he did anything wrong, but jealous Hurrem doesn't see it that way. It continues to happen and Hurrem continues to meddle and plot against these women. As she rises in power as Empress Consort, her manipulating gets more sophisticated and determined.
Suleyman only gets angrier, but in the end, to appease Hurrem, he sends the women away.
First with the two Russian concubines, then with Isabella and also Firuze. In the first case, he wanted Hurrem more than the two Russian women so he sent them away. And gave Hurrem the brooch he'd made as a peace offering.
In Isabella's case, he warned Hurrem to stop meddling, but when she didn't, and the woman was almost poisoned and the viewer was led to believe that Hurrem ordered the princess killed, I think Suleyman interfered and got the princess out of there both to protect Hurrem from the others trying to frame her for killing Isabella, and to protect Isabella from Hurrem's plotting.
In the case of Firuze, Hurrem told Suleyman that Firuze was from their Persian rival Safavid Dynasty. But, because Suleyman decided that Firuze was not a spy to have kept her it meant he would have had to marry her. Sum Bul Aga gave this information to Hurrem much to her chagrin. Afife Hatun however tells a relieved Hurrem that Suleyman decided to send Firuze away - Hurrem all this time has been carrying poison around preparing to kill herself rather than share Suleyman. At one point Afife stops Hurrem from doing so in a heartbroken moment of despair.
Despite his feelings Suleyman sends Firuze away and through Rustem Pasha Hurrem arranged a date for her with the Persians.
Yup, Hurrem wins again. And two episodes later after Suleyman recovers from being poisoned over several months (Firuze?) he's spouting poetry again to Hurrem. The lovesick bloke.
But it just cycles with Suleyman. Hurrem schemes. He gets angry. Then he forgives her. Every time. Over time, he's banished her and exiled her. But he always goes back to Hurrem.
As time goes on after she's rescued by Bali Bey, he puts her from him again and says I will never trust you or believe you again. He moves on and flaunts other women in front of her. He has another child, a daughter, by a concubine. Hurrem gets upset over it all - but by that time Hurrem is no longer able to conceive children. Even so, she fretted about the child being a boy. Through Nurbanu, she has the concubine killed. The daughter actually dies young. But, still Hurrem interferes to protect her own children.
As the years pass, Suleyman again is ill, and Hurrem stays by his side and looks after him along with the physicians. They keep his illness hid, but sooner or later it gets out and Mahidevran and the others flock to his beside, hoping His Majesty will succumb to his illness.
Mustafa and Hurrem at this time have an honest talk at Suleyman's bedside where Hurrem insists she had nothing to do with the recent attempt on Mustafa's life.
At this moment, the growing popularity of Mustafa with the people and the Janissary really shows and without Mustafa's help, his brother Selim's life would have been threatened by the restless Janissary.
Thankfully Suleyman recovers and order is restored.
Suleyman's recent illness, made him see once again just how loyal Hurrem is to him and his place on the throne as Padishah. He starts to thaw towards her, but is further troubled after events and growing dissention with the Safavid Dynasty and the increasing popularity of Mustafa with the people and the Janissary that forces Suleyman to order the execution of Mustafa much like increasing mistakes had forced him to execute Ibrahim.
It all sets him apart emotionally from everyone including Hurrem. But it didn't stop him from protecting her however. He has a habit of going out disguised and walking around the city as such. He discovered on one occasion people in general were gathering around coffee shops and drinking coffee and mouthing off every gossip going. Including bad mouthing his Queen, calling her a Russian witch who had bewitched the Sultan into marrying her. That was bad enough but another incident at similar shops sparked the gathering of a mob who had cornered Hurrem and threatened to stone her. In the heat of the moment, Hurrem walked out into the street and stared them down while Suleyman arrived at the precise moment that one of them was about to strike his Queen.
He can get angry at her, but you don't harm his Sultana!
As a result of all the melee coffee and the coffee shops are banned in the city.
All this time, Suleyman is continually reading from what looks like journals - Ibrahim's?
They ultimately blamed the attack on Hurrem to one of Suleyman's sisters and when confronted, she doesn't deny it, saying that Hurrem is a demon. All of his family have hated Hurrem and even Ibrahim... Suleyman replied saying that Hurrem is no angel but nobody is. But unlike you, (his sister) she is loyal to a fault. She has never betrayed him or stabbed me in the back or tried to remove him from his throne. Ever. He ultimately banished his sister.
But, suddenly we have a change in Suleiman's opinion on Hurrem. After all these years he suddenly realized that she had never betrayed him. Where did that knowledge come from? He went from declaring that he'd never believe or trust her again to declaring that she'd never betrayed him. Wow. Big turnaround. Same thing with Isabella. He never was that hard on Hurrem about it because he knew she hadn't harmed the princess. He knew where she went - therefore he had to be the one who got her out of there. Same with Firuze - when he found out someone had been poisoning him for months - it was a good bet it was Firuze. There's nothing deadlier than women. Again, he knew that Hurrem was right. He's realizing that Hurrem always has his best interests at heart. Always. It's just her love is possessive.
Once Suleyman was able to let go of his emotional hold and anger regarding Mustafa and when he realized that the other woman he'd hung around, Senora Mendes had deceived him, he wrote the letter/poem, went back to the Palace ahead of Hurrem and left the letter for her to find on her bed in her chamber.
Hurrem comes back to the Palace and finds the letter.
Smiling at each other, they meet in the corridor and embrace each other with longing.
Though glad to be close to Suleyman again, Hurrem is wary, thinking that his affection is suddenly from genuine compassion and obligation. She realizes that his intentions had nothing to do with her illness, even though Sum Bul had told Suleyman about it after he'd left the letter.
Their scenes as the final Hurrem episodes count down is a marvel to watch. He starts spouting poetry again... they become like one person. Amazing. Love truly wins. In spite of her illness at this point. They are like one person as she once again starts sharing his bedroom. "I want you beside me, your breath is enough,"
Vahide Percin as the older Hurrem truly lights up once Hurrem is back together with her Suleyman. She totally rocked it as much as Meryem Uzerli did as the younger Hurrem. With makeup she likely could have continued the role - alas the viewer will never know. Meryem was an absolute icon in that role. No doubt about it
Tumblr media
Halit Ergenç as Suleyman is a total hottie and his voice and the poetry - you can watch the women playing Hurrem simply melt. I don't blame them. Wow. He rocked.
Tumblr media
Magnificent Century so well acted and yet so much of a soap opera. Emotionalized fiction. But still parts of it are so far apart from the real life Hurrem and Suleyman.
Tumblr media
But they got the love part right. Love wins. They loved each other. I have no doubt about it. I question the other women though especially later. Every account I have read said that he was faithful to Hurrem. Hmmm.
