Mexican Gold Poppies - February 2023 One of the first signs of spring in the Tuscon - Casa Grande area is the emergence of the yellow carpet of Mexican Gold Poppies. We were heading east on I-10 toward Tuscon when we were sent down a detour to avoid a bad accident. That alternate route cost us some time, but put us next to blankets of Mexican Gold Poppies along the highway so Kathy could capture this image. MWM

From dooryard gardens along the Rio Mayo. Produces copius quantities of 2-3 inch fruit. Removing the thin skin reveals the small scrubber 'sponge'. In low desert, plant with summer rains. Small yellow flowers and full vines make this an attractive trellis plant. Contents: +/-25 seeds (1 g). Luffa - Luffa operculata. Various species of Luffa are grown worldwide for food and to produce natural sponges. Culture: Scarify and presoak seeds for 24 hours. Sow 1 inch deep in the spring when temperatures are warm. May take several weeks for germination. The long climbing vines require plenty of room, plant next to a fence or trellis. Required plenty of water throughout the long growing season. Seed Saving: Annual. Varieties will cross-pollinate. Fruits should mature on the plant until dry and seed can be loosened by shaking."

Hey so ya know that AZ WASP thing? Yeah I did research for some reason. When cities were established:

Prescott: 1864

Tucson: 1877 (says it’s the oldest city I guess)

Tombstone: 1881

Phoenix: Feb 1881

Payson: 1882

Nogales: 1853 (Gadsden purchase)/1883

Sedona: 1876/1899

Jerome: 1899

Globe: 1876 and 1907 says it was incorporated twice

Wrinkelman: 1914 (small town, probably like a ghost or smth)

Flagstaff: 1928

Scottsdale: 1951 “The West's Most Western Town”

Peoria: June 1954

Chandler: May 1954

The slashes are the different dates I got the later one is probably the right date but I’m not sure. Phoenix bothers Tombstone about their ages n stuff and who is older but Tomb still doesn’t say when they were born. Wrinkelman is the smallest town in AZ so I added it on there. Peoria definitely holds it over Chandler’s head that their older. I feel like when Nogales was spilt it became kind of like a doppelgänger situation. And even through all these years they still act like children even through AZ’s very interesting parenting process of older siblings to WASP. Who knows what his next evolution will be.

Arizona does his best but between prying Tuscon and Tempe off each other (one of if not the oldest football rivalry, UoA vs ASU, from 1899 before AZ was even a state LMAO) and all of the hell demons that crawl around, the cool big brother parenting could only go so far, I'm sure
