Snape trauma rant
Warnings: mentions of abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, and r@pe
Soooo…I just got finished watching Madea’s neighbor from hell and the whole time I couldn’t stop thinking about Severus.
(For those who don’t know, the play is about a foster mother (Ruth) that moves in next door to Madea and Aunt Bam. She was very abusive to the kids and neglected them.)
Also this is my POV and opinion so if you’re a Marauders stan pls don’t get whiny about it…
It was so interesting to see how these three kids reacted to the situation they were in. Ruth, their foster mother, would beat them and fail to feed them. She was also very verbally abusive. She would say stuff like “you are nothing” and “do you think you’re prettier than me? Well you’re not” and so many other things. NATURALLY the children didn’t respond well to being abused (go figure). They were rude and disrespectful towards people (ofc when the foster mother wasn’t around), and the oldest child(Karen) felt like she had to resort to stealing in order to feed her siblings and keep them satisfied.
I am by no means justifying being rude and disrespectful, but what kills me about Snaters is they are quick to point out what Severus does wrong, but they fail to understand that there’s a reason…something obviously went wrong in his life and this snark and vindictiveness is him projecting. He’s taking it out on others because he couldn’t (or felt he couldn’t) take it out on the people who caused him the pain. I’ve been through something similar but definitely not as extreme. One parent did me wrong, and since they weren’t there for me to take that out on…I took it out on the parent that WAS there…does that make me a bad person? No. I needed HELP…that’s what that means…I didn’t hate the parent that was there at all, I was acting out because I wanted the absent parent’s attention.
Then Snaters always say “oh well he should have consulted an adult if it was that bad for him”…..it’s not that simple I’m afraid. In the movie, all three kids were constantly threatened with beatings and even death in the occasion that they told anyone about the situation. That’s something that happens in real life…isn’t that what people talk about with sexual assault survivors? R@pe survivors? Domestic violence survivors? How they are afraid to come forward out of humiliation? Or fear of not being believed? How a lot of them are threatened? Why is any different now??? In the movie, it was the brother that decided to take the chance to get help, and it was the oldest (karen) that didn’t think it was a good idea…she was scared. It was heartbreaking.
When Ruth was exposed for being abusive, she admitted that she had been in a similar situation as a child. She was also a foster child, she was r@ped multiple times, and she was abused. And that got me thinking about the Sirius argument that’s used a lot… “well Sirius was abused, he didn’t turn out like Snape” if Sirius was abused then why’d he engage in the RELENTLESS bullying of another person? “He grew up” then why was he still engaging in the childish name calling as an adult? “Snivellus”…making fun of ones appearance. “Well Severus made fun of Hermione’s appearance!” And that makes it ok for Sirius to do it? With that logic it was ok for Snape to do it because James and Co. did it…that’s not how that works, bestie. I think we can all agree that Sirius needed help…therapy…right? So why is it any different for Severus? If Mr. Black isn’t a bad person in your eyes then why is Severus?
Now of course Tyler Perry has his big life lesson speech moments in his plays so here’s what he had to say (it’s a lot):
There are mentions of god. I’m not religious, I’m just telling you what was said
Regarding speaking up
Madea: hunny tell her. Tell these people. (these people: CPS)
Karen: Why!? They don’t care about us!
Madea: That ain’t true, hunny. Tell them, and if you run up on somebody and that’s who you tell and they don’t care, tell somebody else. And then tell somebody else, and eventually you gonna run up on somebody that care, hunny. Keep telling people. Keep reaching out for people, for people to be there to help you. There’s somebody that god will send to help you.
Regarding the effects of abuse on children
Ruth: Why not talk to them like that, Patti? Huh? Somebody talk to me like that my entire life Patti, but guess what baby, I’m a winner. Look how I turned out! They talked to me like that everyday but look at me baby, I’m on top of it!
Madea: You know what’s the craziest thing you saying? You think you got it together…you crazy as hell. You think you up top of the mountain? Im getting ready to choke you all the way down to the bottom of it, cause you have lost yo damn mind.
Ruth: What you chokin me for? Huh? All I did was put them on punishment. Yea I put them on punishment, but that’s what’s wrong with children these days! They don’t know-
Madea: girl…shut up with that foolishness. Shut up with this foolishness right now. There is a difference…hear me good when I say this…between punishing a child, and doin what the hell you doin. That is abuse. You have to know where the line is, hunny. All that stuff, that’s abuse, do you understand? You don’t do that to no child! You don’t do that! Have you lost yo mind? Got them down in the basement. Stop it, it is awful. Learn the difference, hunny. But that’s alright, you gonna have time to learn the difference because getting ready to be on lockdown, you goin straight to jail.
Ruth: Say- what- what
Clay: The police are on their way
Ruth: Wait a minute. Y’all called the police on me?
Madea and Bam: HELL YEA
Clay: And not only that, I’m gonna talk to the DA about prosecuting you for the money that you received for the children
Ruth: Prosecuting me for some what!? Prosecuting me for some mon- baby I spent all that money on those children, and if they standing up in my house telling you that I’m putting my hands on them, they lying on me! I don’t understand why they just gonna stand over here and lie on me, talkin about I beat them! Are you kidding me?…Look I was just tryna help these children.
Madea: How the hell you helping them by talkin about them like they a dog and beatin them and doin all that?
Ruth: I put a roof over their heads when didn’t nobody want them lady.
Madea: You know what, you crazy as hell. You sound like somebody’s stupid parent..think just because they give they child a roof over their head that they can dog them out and talk to them any kinda way and do anything they want to them. That is crazy as hell, hunny. You got to be careful with these children. Let me try to make you understand this. You gotta watch the children that’s been neglected and outcast and givin up on and thrown away and left to die and left for nothin. Watch out for those kinda children, cause that’s usually where god will put the blessing, in those kinda children. Do you understand?
Ruth: you don’t know me ok. You don’t even know what I’ve been through!
Madea: Whatever the hell you been through does not give you the right to pass your pain on to nobody else hunny. Especially no child. Somebody got to stop it, hunny. Somebody got to say “this is enough”.
Ruth: Look, I was in foster care just like they were, ok.
Madea: you think that make it ok? That makes it worse, girl.
Ruth: You can’t judge me, lady.
Madea: oh I’m not about to judge you. Imma let the judge judge you….that makes it worse, you’ve been where they are AND you gonna treat them like that? That’s crazy as hell. Let me tell you something, I would rather you leave me out on the street in the cold, then to bring me up in yo house and treat me like I’m nothing.
Ruth: I didn’t mean to hurt them, ok.
Madea: stop that lying, I can see it all in ya attitude. You meant to do just what the hell you meant to do
Ruth: Look, I was beatin…I was r@ped so many times I can’t even remember, ok. Somebody talked about me, and said I wasn’t gonna be nothing my entire life.
Madea: And how did that make you feel when that happened? Did it make you feel good? Did it make you feel like you were worth something?
Ruth: No
Madea: When they talked to you like a dog, did that tear your self esteem down?
Ruth: yes ma’am, it did
Madea: yes it did, yes it did. What the hell you think you doin to these children? You think just because they children you can talk to them any old kinda way? Let me tell you something, when you are raising a child, you give them a bag to pack. Everything you do, you put something in that bag. It’s like you giving them a lunchbox then sending them off to school, but the bag you packin is for their LIFETIME. So everything you give them, they will carry for life. Do you hear me? What are you giving your child? What are you putting in the bag? You supposed to be putting in love and faith and peace and temperance, and all that stuff in it. But what you doin is giving them hell to carry, so when they get grown all they got is a bunch of bags that they can’t do nothing with and don’t nobody wanna be bothered with them and don’t nobody wanna be around them, because of what you’ve gave them. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. There is a (couldn’t understand word) that you are passing down from generation to generation. It’s got to stop somewhere, and who gonna stop it if you don’t stop it?
Now I completely realize that people are gonna “Severus=Ruth” but it goes both ways. Ruth can also represent Sirius to an extend as well. I don’t care how young he was. He was old enough to know that what he was going through at home was painful and that he didn’t like it, but he was also old enough to realize he was putting someone else through that, regardless if he knew of Snape’s domestic situation or not. Then he was still stuck in his ways towards Severus as in adult and never thought it would be mature to apologize. Same with Severus. He was vindictive and made a lot of poor decisions. But they both needed help…whether it was therapy or somebody telling them about their ass like Madea did. Ruth “didn’t mean to do it” but she did, because that’s all she knew…that was her bag that people in her life packed for her. Somebody needed to step in and tell both Severus and Sirius that their bags were packed wrong. That’s the problem, nobody corrected them. That’s the effect of a bystander.
And again I’m not saying Severus is perfect. I know I act like he is for the shits and giggles, but trust me, I love and recognize his flaws as much as I love and recognize his good, because his flaws are what made him…him. And you can’t say “I love you” without loving what makes them…them. I love you means I love all of you, and I absolutely love Severus Snape as a person. I couldn’t care less if you hate him because I still don’t like the Marauders, but I just hate that the 4 people who assisted in putting shit in Sev’s bag don’t get held accountable… how Severus is the one to blame for everything. He spent years protecting Harry without expecting nothing in return, he obviously cared to some extent. He just didn’t know how to show it. I wish he could’ve gotten help. He probably would have been a little happier.
And I hate the argument that us Snape stans use his redemption to excuse his behavior. That’s wrong..lord forbid I say the same thing about Marauder stans. His redemption showed us that just because you’re bag is filled with fuckery, doesn’t mean the good someone put in there won’t shine through ✨✨✨

Top 5 Trailers:
1. IT : Chapter 2
youtube
So I actually hate horror movies mostly, but I have a couple exceptions and IT in all forms (og miniseries and novel) is one and I think the most recent IT part 2 trailer is so well done and makes me so excited for it. And I love Pennywise's lines over the trailer.
2. Pan's Labyrinth
youtube
Honestly, voice over aside (which kinda ruins it in my opinion) this is a trailer that has stuck with me over the years. The images of war the shifts in color scheme and the lullaby hummed over it. The film itself is just a master piece and I saw it in theaters when I was pretty young and probably shouldnt have but I have not regrets.
3. Booksmart
youtube
This trailer completes my soul and I still havent seen the film because nowhere near me is showing it and I am literally dying.
4. Boo! A Madea Halloween
youtube
Honestly just the first shift away from what I expected from a tyler Perry movie. I was used to the trailers having the funny parts some voice over and dramatic music and those inspiring words at the end. And while he had been veering more towards comedy leading up to it. BOO! A Medea Halloween's trailer really hit home that this was going to be different than his previous films.
5. Crimson Peak
youtube
So 2 Guillermo Del Toro films made it on this list and after I said I didnt really like horror 3 horror like films are on the list. But I mean first off, if the trailer of a horror film catches my eyes then you know they done good, because generally I don't like horror and avoid horror movie trailers because I am a big baby. But I will say that because Guillermo's films have similar vibes and feels to them the images are always captivating in trailers. I think you have to work hard to mess up a trailer for a del Toro film because you have so much to work with. But I think what I particularly love about this trailer is the song.
Top 5 Netflix Originals
1. The Haunting of Hill House
Tumblr media
Have I mentioned that I hate horror. I wouldnt actually classify this as horror though. But it still left me disturbed, mostly because it hit too close to home for me. I identified so much with some of the characters. One in particular that what they went though and how they reacted became an extension of me in a sense. It felt to real even though it was a show. I cried had nightmares and was left emotionally exhausted. But I have rewatched it and recommended it. And probably will do so again. It holds a special place in my heart.
2. One Day At A Time
Tumblr media
I just love this show. Love the representation. Love the issues it tackles. Love the comedy. Especially love the heart felt and real moments. I love Rita Moreno!
3. The Umbrella Academy
Tumblr media
Honestly, most of the time I am like so confused with this show and face palming like crazy, but there are so many really well executed concepts and storylines that I really adore and dont want to spoil.
4. Mr.Igelsias
Tumblr media
So basically the same reasons I love ODAAT, but some special love for representing my paisanos!! Fluffy is Gold but I love the setting of the show in a school. I love the focus on teacher without spinning it in a saviour way the way most shows or movies do it.
5. The Order
Tumblr media
I love it. I cant explain why because the writing isnt the best and in some places I fond it to be to The Magicians (which I never cared for) but I like it. I will watch if it has a season 2 and I will daydream about hamish duke until then.

Tyler Perry and the Case for Black Mediocrity
Tumblr media
Over the last twenty years, wide-released black cinema has sat within a comfortable plateau. Ask any prospective black filmmaker about their dreams and be patient as they tell you repeatedly how they are asked if they will become the next Tyler Perry. For a long time, I resented such a comparison on the merit of his work which I deemed less than superior. Comparing oneself to Tyler Perry felt like a cop-out, which is pretty short-sighted, especially taking into account the empire that he has amassed around himself in Atlanta. I was (am) tired of the Madea schtick, of the played-out trope of the worn down black woman, and I was tired of thinking that was all black cinema could be. This thought proves how little I know of the vast genre that is Black cinema and how it has occurred in waves like other film genres. My specific gripe was always with Mr. Perry, however, since it was all anyone knew when thinking of “black” and “filmmaker” and his ideas of family, black womanhood, and his irresponsibility in letting those tropes last. This isn’t an analysis on that though. I can get into that at a later time when I’ve seen more of his films and can accurately rate them. What interests me most about Tyler Perry is his formulaic style and what that means on the bigger stage of black mediocrity versus black excellence.
Mediocrity is something I’ve thought about consistently for years. I was one of those kids who did really well in school, not good enough to be gifted (thank goodness), but good enough to have a lot of pressure placed on me. I’ve never done well under that sort of pressure and have always caved under it rather than prospered. That pressure petered out as I got older as I maintained a comfortable position as someone smart enough for advanced classes but not hard-working enough to be exceptional. I was mediocre. Now, I’ve come to a place where that is a really comfortable place to be, but growing up it was a major source of the latent anxiety that was always buzzing within myself. To a certain extent, Black people are called to be exceptional. Exceptionality and excellence are used a marker of our worth on many scales and it can easily change the access, social capital, and literal capital that one is able to have if they meet these standards of excellence. This is coupled with the concept of working “twice as hard for half as much” that Black kids in white societies are subjected to. Not only are Black kids expected to work twice as hard but they need to be excellent at everything they do and it creates an unlevel playing field that leaves us at the mercy of our white neighbors. Anyway, none of that is new information nor is it revolutionary. It’s something to be dealt with and challenged, but it might not be in my lifetime. Which is why I make the case for Black mediocrity.
Black mediocrity exists. It’s always been there. Ask anyone, and though they might be reticent to put their family’s business out there, trust and believe they’re thinking of someone who embodies mediocrity. In all seriousness, it’s just life. If there are millions of Black people, how can we all be excellent? It’s a ploy fed to the greater consciousness that when Black people succeed they are embodying an excellence that separates us from the “others”. What Black people do know is that we are human. We are allowed mistakes and many mistakes that are deemed to be our fault are the results of years of systems that make mistakes the only option. All of this can be applied to the Hollywood Gatekeepers, wherein only the best and brightest of the People of Color can be let in on a limited basis thus furthering the idea in the minds of non-Blacks that we are all good at the things we do. Stop it. Some of us are okay. And that’s okay.
Tumblr media
Over the past few years, movies have been coming out by Black directors or centering Black people that are each deemed the “most important movie of the year”. It’s been wonderful seeing these movies be made and telling stories that don’t reflect the same faces that have been seen over and over again. But calling certain Black movies excellent simply because they are Black is a shallow attempt at stemming the diversity gap. It tells black filmmakers that unless they can make movies that “wow” people, their films will not be worth anything. Essentially, if they don’t appeal to white people, they’re not appealing at all. That isn’t to say anything bad about Black audiences. They love the movies and they show their support in droves, let that be known. However, it makes some directors believe that to attain a certain level of “excellence” they need to be accepted by certain groups. This manifests by creating content that can not only relate to Black audiences but also somehow manage to entertain non-Black audiences too. It cheapens the work that these filmmakers are able to do because, in order to make white people feel included in the ways that they like, things must be explained to them. As a cause of this explanation, Black audiences aren’t given any revolutionary themes to explore. All this for the accolade of white-empowered institutions.
This is all to say that I’ve rethought my stance on Tyler Perry films. I still think his work is damaging to the image of Black womanhood and families, but this insistence that his work is deemed “low-art” is snooty and as a child of cinema, I need to be open to all forms of work. I have to allow him his place in the history of Black American cinema and also his work as a playwright, which is where he got his start. Yes, the idea of Black mediocrity is kind of a joke, because I know that we are all mediocre in our own special ways and I love us because of it. But if we, as an audience, are going to use Black excellence as a signifier for a higher class of Black cinema, we owe it to ourselves to be better informed.

HBO Max New Releases: September 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept. 9), Mad Max: Fury Road (Sept. 9), and Promising Young Woman (Sept. 25) all come back to the streaming world.
On the TV side of things, HBO Max is bringing back DC’s strangest heroes for season 3 of Doom Patrol on Sept. 23. And for those who need their true crime fix, The Way Down should fit the bill. This docuseries about a weight loss cult is timely for reasons you’ll definitely want to Google.

Imitation of Life (1959)
Tumblr media
I believe Imitation of Life evidently depicts the black stereotype of “mammy” and white savior narrative. Lora and her daughter, Susie, clearly embody a rich, lavish lifestyle which they’ve become numb to. Their white privilege feeds into their self-absorption, making them blind to the struggles and lives of those around them. This is specifically evident when Lora chats with Annie, stating “It never occurred to me that you had any friends.” Although not meant to have intentional malice, this comment becomes dehumanizing and degrading. It further distances the women’s two very different lives.
The “mammy” stereotype is blatantly seen throughout the film with Lora “hiring” Annie to become her and Susie’s personal domestic houseworker. The “mammy” figure is rooted from a dehumanizing, slave-like image which restricts a woman of any true character development or complexities. Annie, specifically is a dark-skinned older woman who appears to be loyal, non-threatening, and obedient to Lora and Susie’s demands. She submits herself to the wishes of the white saviors of the story, ultimately handing over her power to them.
Lora is seen as the white savior of the narrative by providing for the “less fortunate” Annie and Sarah Jane. She uses her white privilege, money, and capacity for more opportunities to aid the black mother/daughter pair. She has passive advantages compared to Annie, like more freedom to work, play, buy, and speak freely. Lora and Susie’s clear social advantages may also influence Sarah Jane’s decision to utilize her European centric physique and features in order to pass as white. Lora’s privilege visually spans over a decade, later depicting her as a famous Broadway star who lives in an opulent New York home.
The portrayal of “Mammy” is still seen today in media like the Tyler Perry’s Madea film series. Here, he releases multiple, controversial movies revolving around the stereotypical Madea which lacks an evolved character structure, depicts a socially regressed anti-feminist theme, and acts as an African American caricature to appeal to wider audiences. Although Tyler Perry is a black male comedian, his portray of black women comes off as disrespectful and highly contentious. A recent film which depicts the “white savior” narrative is Peter Farrelly’s 2018 film, Green Book, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. A white (arguably racist) driver is seen as the hero of the story, driving around a queer, black musical genius. The film is told through the driver’s point of view and is essentially focused around the white man instead of the real star of the story. Although both the Madea films and Green Book are lead by men and don’t necessarily contain the same exact narrative as Imitation of Life, they continue to project and feed into the racist stereotypes in modern day media.

The 'CBS This Morning' host on Monday spoke on the topic of corporate culture in media during a discussion at the Milken Institute 2018 Global Conference. Gayle King on Monday warned of a backlash to #MeToo at the Milken Institute 2018 Global Conference at the Beverly Hilton. “I worry sometimes that women make an accusation and men instantly get the death penalty,” the CBS This Morning host said during a panel discussion in Beverly Hills on the topic of corporate culture in the media industry. “I think we have to be very careful; that there has to be a due process for all involved — so I do worry of a backlash to the #MeToo movement.” King was joined by United Talent Agency CEO Jeremy Zimmer, filmmaker Tyler Perry and Tim Armstrong, CEO of Oath, which is Verizon’s digital content business that houses AOL, Yahoo and other brands. King said she often hears men complain that they are confused about how they can and cannot behave in the era of #MeToo, the movement that turns a spotlight on men who abuse women in the workplace. “Listen, if it’s not something you can say in front of your wife, or girlfriend, or sister, or mother, it’s probably not a good idea,” she said. King then got more specific. “It’s probably not a good idea to have a meeting, take out your penis, and think that that’s a good opening line,” she said to laughter. “Is it wrong to give a woman a compliment? No, it’s not. I think everyone knows the intention.” Armstrong said he demands women and minorities be involved in every gathering he attends for work, and he has been known to simply walk out if it’s not the case. “I now cancel meetings when there’s no diversity in the room,” he said. Apart from #MeToo and diversity, Perry said culture at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta begins each day with a prayer, and he acknowledged many other businesses in Hollywood wouldn’t allow such a thing. He noted the prayers are not mandatory and that he’s always impressed with the large number of employees who show up for them. King asked Zimmer what he considers a “deal breaker” when meeting a potential new hire. “It’s somebody who shows up at my office for an interview just looking like a bum,” he answered. “I know that’s really old-fashioned, and I’m sure I missed out on the next Mark Zuckerberg because of that.” When King asked Perry how long he’d continue making movies about Madea — the tough, elderly woman he plays in some of his most popular films — the actor-director responded, “As long as people want to see her, she’ll be around. But the minute they stop coming, I’m killing that bitch!” https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/gayle-king-warns-metoo-backlash-has-be-due-process-all-involved-1107199
