Metro RP2350 is wrappin' up testing ✨🐢
This week we got our Metro RP2350 boards
https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/11/11/metro-rp2350-now-with-bigger-better-rp2350b/
back and after fixing the pin direction and rerouting
the whole thing, it came up and pretty much works perfectly! Just one component needed a swap - we were able to test all GPIO, analog inputs, MicroSD slot, PSRAM, LEDs & NeoPixel, user button, I2C/SPI/UART, aaand power supplies. The 5V supply is great, we got a nice clean 5V out at 2A+ from 12V DC in. The last thing to check is the HSTX port, which gives us DVI access, and it works, thanks to this festive turtle demo!
We're aiming to get this into the shop before the end of the year, wouldn't that be smashing?

Understanding ESP32 Pin Configuration: A Developer's Guide
The ESP32 microcontroller has become a cornerstone of IoT development, thanks to its versatility and powerful features. One of the most crucial aspects of working with ESP32 is understanding its pin configuration and capabilities. Let's dive into the essential aspects of ESP32 pins that every developer should know.
Tumblr media
GPIO Pins Overview
The ESP32 boasts up to 34 GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) pins, but not all are available for use in most development boards. Some key points about ESP32 pins:
GPIO 6-11: Reserved for internal SPI flash connection
GPIO 34-39: Input-only pins with no internal pull-up/pull-down resistors
ADC Capabilities: Two 12-bit SAR ADCs, supporting 18 measurement channels
Touch Sensors: Up to 10 capacitive touch GPIOs
Special Function Pins
Several pins serve dual purposes or have specific functions:
Boot Mode Pins GPIO 0: Bootloader mode when pulled low during reset GPIO 2: Connected to on-board LED in many development boards
UART Pins GPIO 1 (TX) and GPIO 3 (RX): Default UART0 communication Often used for flashing and debugging
SPI Pins VSPI: GPIO 5 (CS), 18 (CLK), 19 (MISO), 23 (MOSI) HSPI: GPIO 14 (CLK), 12 (MISO), 13 (MOSI), 15 (CS)
Best Practices for Pin Usage
Strapping Pins Always check the strapping pin status before using GPIO 0, 2, 4, 5, 12, and 15. These pins may affect boot behavior if incorrectly configured.
Input-Only Pins When designing sensor interfaces, prefer GPIO 34-39 for analog inputs as they're input-only and less susceptible to noise.
Pull-up/Pull-down Configuration
ADC Usage ADC1: Can be used with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth active ADC2: Only available when Wi-Fi/Bluetooth is disabled
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Don't use GPIO 6-11 in your projects as they're connected to the internal SPI flash.
Avoid using strapping pins for critical functions that can't be changed during boot.
Remember that GPIO 34-39 don't have internal pull-up/pull-down resistors.
Be cautious with voltage levels - ESP32 pins operate at 3.3V.
Conclusion
Understanding ESP32 pinout is fundamental for successful project development. By following these guidelines and best practices, you can avoid common issues and make the most of your ESP32's capabilities. Remember to always consult the official ESP32 technical reference manual for detailed specifications and updates.

What is going on where 3 art schools have all closed so far just this year. My old school university of the arts, the phila academy of fine arts and the Delaware college of art and design. Which is crazy that it’s all happening at once.

Hello I am alive.
Time and socials move different in the wake of one’s university suddenly closing down. Now I’m on a completely different life path in a completely different place. Still making art
Hoping to start making more fanart like i used to but life has a way of throwing me curveballs
Here’s a sketch dump in the meantime

The SC16IS74x is an I2C to UART converter
If you know us, you know we luuuuuv I2C as a near-universal interface for sensors, GPIO expanders, OLEDs, and other various devices under our Stemma QT family: https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=stemma+qt 🌱. But we still bump into some UART devices: https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=uart here and there—GNSS/GPS units, MP3 playback chips, fingerprint sensors, LIDARs, and more.
These can be annoying if you only have one UART port-or none at all! So we put together this SC16IS74x breakout. It can use either the SC16IS740: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nxp-usa-inc/SC16IS740IPW-128/1301043 or SC16IS741: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nxp-usa-inc/SC16IS741AIPWJ/4486521 chips-both essentially the same for our purpose: providing a bidirectional UART with flow control. Address jumpers on the back allow you to select up to four devices on one I2C bus—and there's even native Linux kernel drivers: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/devicetree/bindings/serial/nxp%2Csc16is7xx.txt 🧠.

JK UART RS-485 Module for Bluetooth BMS
Tumblr media
RS-485 is particularly advantageous for setups where the BMS is located far from the monitoring device, such as in large electric vehicle battery banks, solar energy systems, or complex off-grid applications. The module ensures robust communication by converting UART signals to the RS-485 standard, allowing for secure, interference-resistant data transfer even in electrically noisy environments. Users can monitor essential battery metrics like voltage, current, capacity, and temperature while also making adjustments to BMS settings, including charging limits and cell balancing parameters.
Installation is straightforward, and the module is highly compatible with JK BMS configurations. By combining Bluetooth with RS-485 capabilities, the JK UART RS-485 Module expands flexibility for remote monitoring, making it an invaluable tool for users who demand reliable and extensive control over their lithium battery systems in challenging or large-scale environments.

I'm going back to my art school days because one of the biggest art schools in the region is straight up shuttering. There's been no notification other than a tiny announcement on their webpage. Students got tuition bills for the next semester, the school gave diplomas to their graduates and 24 hours later in a single sentence on their website half-announced it's closing. President and all her cronies are resigning like rats fleeing a sinking ship. Class Action shit is sharpening the knives.
My school had a friendly competition, a good relationship with UArts. It was an amazing school and any student or grad from there was guaranteed to be a reliable worker and amazing artist. Now it's just fucking gone and my colleagues I've known for 15 years (and are now faculty of UArts themselves!) are just sort of walking around stunned.
With the rise of AI and management running these prestigious spaces like they're CEOs of a Silicon Valley startup it's depressing. Fuck lenders and fuck CEOs and fuck all this.
Arts Education is a public good and a requirement for a healthy society. It doesn't have to be this way.

The fact that the American higher education system is slowly but very surely imploding!! as I’m getting ready to go back to school this fall is absolutely terrifying 😵‍💫 seems everyday a different college is just shutting down and closing its doors leaving students to scramble..
