Explaining myself and The Book

I wrote a novel! Well, I’m on a very loose second draft, but still.

I’m starting this blog to record my progress, and assorted other things.

I should explain - I’ve just completed a class at UCLA Extension, entitled “Write a Novel in Ten Weeks”. I signed up on a whim after receiving my final rejection from the last of the four PhD in Educational Theory programs I’d applied for. After this class, the thought of re-applying and casting the net wider is very far from my mind. I’ve stopped reading books and articles on educational theory and philosophy for now (where I was getting deeper and deeper into the radical anti-testing ideas of unschooling) in favor of short stories in the New Yorker, literary novels, more-on-the-trashy-end comedy-mystery books, pieces on motherhood and identity (therein lies the overlap).

I do still think I am probably a dabbler in terms of career ideas - I just like too many things. For now, I’m trying to channel that into writing.

By the way, apologies for the American spellings, British people. I’ve not forgotten my roots, but I’m a green card holder now.  

My story is - hopefully - the start of a series of comedy-mystery books. My hero is Charlie Berry-Bhatt, a Harvard graduate, punk music lover, tiny home dweller, British transplant to Oregon, jack-of-all-trades, part-time hippy, enthusiast of most new experiences. Oh, and a mother of three youngish kids.

In the midst of an identity crisis and more domestic dramas than she cares for, Charlie embarks upon a storytelling project, commissioned by her megabucks friend, Jane Aguilar. This project, the ‘Posterity Project’ as Jane calls it, involves Charlie interviewing the aging residents of a luxurious retirement complex, to record their stories “for posterity”.

They are not super happy about this. As Charlie navigates the peculiar hostility she encounters (along with a handsome Winnie-the-Pooh philosopher butler, who plies her with mimosas), she uncovers some murky half-truths surrounding a thirty-year-old murder. As she is investigating what really happened, a new murder is committed, and now she must solve the old to solve the new (well, she really mustn’t, but she really wants to).

That’s the general idea. After three weeks of planning and sculpting plot, characters and locations, then two weeks of building and fleshing out a structural plan of eight chapters, we were given four weeks to write the book itself, two chapters each week. That was draft one. Then we had one week to read through the whole thing for plot and make edits and rewrites as necessary - and that’s the loose second draft I’m at right now.

My class has just come to an end, on the night of the U.K. general election (commitment to the writing cause = missing my own elections party), so I’m stepping back from the book for a couple of days to put together an accountability blog. I also read that a writer should have a blog if they are to be successful, so here it is. Now I’m off to write a short story for a competition. I told you, I’m taking my writing career seriously.

Went to the 24th annual UCLA Writers Program Publication Party on Wednesday (the evening before my deadline, like a crazy person) and heard Ben Loory reading one of his new short stories, entitled ‘The Porpoise’, which was extremely hilarious and brilliant, despite missing the very end due to time constraints. Kind of reminded me of The Mighty Boosh, amongst other things. I already had my eye on this book of his, so I bought it hurriedly before they sold out. It’s fantastic - the weirdest little stories that stay with you. Reminds me now of HP Lovecraft, but shorter, wittier and far more to the point. 

I also bought two Sherlock Holmes inspired stories, which I am looking forward to reading - all book research, know your genre and all that! Plus they were both very fun. 

I am very much enjoying the word “stories” at the moment, perhaps in part because my daughter has started saying it when she wants to read a book with me, which is very cute.
