Forest bathing is a truly meditative and rejuvenating experience. Standing in the midst of this damp silence, tracing sunbeams and basking in the aroma of dirt, I felt liberated from the traumatic noise of the city. ⁣ ⁣ Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. As creatures of this world, as inhabitants of Earth, our concrete jungles are fundamentally distressing, no matter what we have been taught. They remove us from our natural tendencies, they change our behaviors, and they alter our sleep patterns. ⁣ ⁣ Spending a night in nature liberates us from our stresses by reaquainting us with our true selves. When you have a chance, I encourage you to step out of the concrete jungle and go forest bathing. I've never felt more fresh and pure. ⁣ ⁣ When I go camping, I wake up at sunrise feeling absolutely refreshed. I go to sleep without the blue light of my phone hypnotizing my eyes. The next morning, I feel light and liberated. I feel appreciative and joyous. Here, the forest is alive with sounds of silence. The flies are the loudest, but if you have the patience to remain still and let them settle, to let them resume about their day, you can hear the wind winding through the trees. You can hear the grass hoppers jumping from blade to blade - hundreds of them, that together sound like rain. Remain still and flying insects pause about their day curiously, maybe more curious than us. ⁣ ⁣ Among the sounds of silence are the flutters of the dragon fly's wings and the grazing breath of cattle, thick and hot. Gallop, they do, unlike the movies, and their hooves thunder across the clearing. I sat still and watched as they walked by me. I hear them first, treading hooves and causal brays, slow and gracious. My hear beats loud like their hooves as I hold as still as possible. Wild are these animals, and I, a guest on their lands. I sat low in the grasses, watching mother and calf, undetected...until I moved. My footsteps echoed loud. I'd never known grass to be so loud. The mother cow stood tall, ears perked and face tense and I tried my best to tell her I meant no harm. I lowered my eyes and slowly walked away; I looked back only when I heard hooves hitting the ground, hard thumps in quick succession. I ran. I looked back to see, thankfully, the mother and calf running the opposite direction from me. There are so many times where we scroll past pictures like this wishing we had the time to sit at the beach and watch the sunset. We wish for a break from the daily hustle. We're tired and fatigued and burnt out from our long work days in which we still didn't accomplish enough. ⁣ ⁣ What's the key to productivity? Breaks! Did you know people who take short breaks often are more productive than those who work long stretches at a time? A short, planned, break gives us the time we need to check our phones or take a moment to ourselves without feeling guilty for stepping away from the desk. ⁣ ⁣ Studies show people who work one hour, then take a 15 min break are more productive. This is because they are in sync with the natural rhythm of the brain. The brain naturally works in bursts of high energy (~53 mins) followed by a spurt of low energy (~17 mins). ⁣ ⁣ Recharge yourself with light stretching, a short walk away from your desk, or a free write session during your break instead of scrolling through your phone. You feel more tired. Even reading about this exhaustion might make you tired. It's early, you're at work, or in class, you don't want to be there, you're thinking of your warm bed you sluggishly rolled out of after a rude awakening from your alarm clock - you're tired. ⁣ ⁣ ⏸You feel it? You feel that transfer of energy? You've associated the words I've used with experiences you've had. The psychological properties of "tired," "exhausted," "warm," "fatigue," and "sweatpants" have transferred from simple words on a page to very real feelings. ⁣ ⁣ 🔂Don't tell yourself you're stuck, or stagnant, tell yourself you are exploring the means to grow. Say you're excited instead of nervous. Feed yourself positive words and think only positive thoughts about your environment, situation, and circumstance.
