Ada Rook's latest album is a piece of bubblegum surrounded by acid vats and thorny vines, incredibly catchy electro-industrial tunes that see Rook going harder than ever before. UGLY DEATH NO REDEMPTION ANGEL CURSE I LOVE YOU is every bit as much passion and intensity as anything she's done in the past, but her incorporation of more aggrotech and cyber metal brings a new edge to it all that's complete ear candy.

In both her solo work and as part of Black Dresses, Ada Rook's music toes the line between gummy pop music and harrowing, intense industrial rock better than anyone else out there. It's easily accessible through her catchy hooks and bright, expressive vocals, but she can dip into metal screeches atop distorted, piercing synths and drum pads the second after without a thought, industrial music that takes hold of the power to engage that dance and rock music provides and bringing it into that context. Her latest album UGLY DEATH NO REDEMPTION ANGEL CURSE I LOVE YOU follows in those footsteps, but now mixes in groovy aggrotech and flashy cyber metal that give her sound a whole new identity. Not only is the music more fiery and passionate than ever, but it's also even more danceable and catchy than before, UGLY DEATH...'s four-on-the-floor drums and massive synth walls making for some of the best earworms Rook has ever put out. It's the kind of album that demands your attention with its massive sound, but it has the musical chops to back it up, using loudness to pull your ears towards it, and then letting Rook's impressive songwriting and always impeccable vocal work to prove that UGLY DEATH... is worth coming back to again and again. At just a slim 35 minute runtime, UGLY DEATH...'s boiling-hot surface is one that goes by fast enough to tear all your skin off while being brisk enough to keep the sadistic fun from turning torturous. These songs are loud, speedy, and hard on the ears, but it's done with such a bright energy and intelligent use of those different elements to where all of it only becomes an advantage for Rook. As these songs see her blazing through feelings of self-hatred, internal destruction and emotional fury, it's her production that makes sure the music is able to keep up with her mind, the incredibly distorted and electrifying chorus on TRU U bury her acidic songwriting - "Transparent blood of a ghost / Nobody else will notice," "You shine so brightly / In the frequency that only freaks like me can see - in so much clipping noise that just about all you can feel is just how much emotion she's pouring out into these songs, later pulling the same kind of thing out on XANAFALGUE atop spiky metal guitars and a blood-soaked bassline that gives her voice even more presence within the mix. While it's not always easy to hear her words, the power in her vocals ensures you always know what she's feeling, which is infinitely more important than anything else an album that is this intense and overwhelming. No one can bring the kind of fervor and musical explosivity Ada Rook can, and that alone makes UGLY DEATH... one of the year's standouts. The album's sound may be a niche one - I can't imagine anyone not inclined to Rook's blasting electro-industrial sound to get a whole lot out of UGLY DEATH... - but her take on the sound here is so well done and powerfully delivered that anyone looking for this kind of sound will be more than happy with what she's brought to the table here. You've got gummy brass horns from Sunrise Transparence alongside plucky piano leads on PURGATOR3Y MODULATION MACHINE, keeping the song's midtempo pulse alive and vicious, the cyber metal gloss of GRAVITY WEAPON with its dance percussion and thrashing vocal performance, the two-part VANISH/DOOM where the transition from its glorious aggrotech beginnings to a sensitive, low-key ballad feels unexpectedly fitting and well-earned on the back end of the album, a quick break from all the noise before you're pulled right back into Rook's claws and into the depths of the night UGLY DEATH... brings. When 5H4D0W H34R7Z sees her taking a brighter path, a buoyant dance tune that uses distortion and noise in a much more melodic and warm fashion, it makes for one of the most cathartic ends to any album this year, Rook breaking herself down throughout the rest of the album so that she could get to a point where rebuilding herself from the ground up was the only option, singing in her plain voice " I'm gonna end it all and then I'm gonna make it up / I'm gonna be somebody I can love," one of the best statements on rebirth and self-assuredness she's ever put out. UGLY DEATH... has some of the darkest moments in her entire discography - XANAFALGUE's self-pointed hatred and the pain of losing yourself on TRU U are unforgettable - but it manages to bring those feelings out without bogging the music down, Rook's intensity as a performer keeping the music engaging and fully present all throughout. UGLY DEATH NO REDEMPTION ANGEL CURSE I LOVE YOU throws wider and bigger punches than nearly any other album this year, and its ability to land almost all of them is staggering. What's most impressive is that it never loses its sense of tension and pacing, even as the songs stay loud and demanding, Rook's years of work in this sound coming to fruition as she modifies each of these 11 songs just enough to make distinct peaks and valleys within UGLY DEATH... that all feel rewarding in their own ways. It's got a ton of heart and the urgency to get it all across to you in just 35 minutes, simultaneously delivering some of the most ear-splitting and electrifying songs this year that once again show just how singular a talent Ada Rook is. UGLY DEATH NO REDEMPTION ANGEL CURSE I LOVE YOU is one strange, ferocious little album, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
