Pip did amazing today at a very difficult UKC trial. The weather was awful, terrible winds and spitting, sideways rain. Luckily we did our rally run before the rain really picked up so we just had wind and goose poop in the grass to contend with.
She did amazing!! The leash wrapped her left foreleg at the first sign AND STAYED THE ENTIRE RUN because I wasn't sure if I was allowed to fix it. AND SHE STILL GOT A PERFECT SCORE!!! OUR FIRST 100!!!!
Unfortunately she was the only Altered dog today so she won AOIS (Altered Only In Show) so I'm just deciding her big ribbon is for her High In Trial! 🎉
That's our last UKC Level 1 leg! Two rally titles in a week!

Ponzu and Milo both had a great day at the show! Despite rain and powerful gusting winds up to 50mph, they both finished their UKC CH today. One judge said Ponzu has a “great attitude on her,” since she was kissing judges and strutting her stuff even though she was soaked and shivering. We even finished early enough for me to drive home for a cat nap before heading out again for a wedding. Good day all around!!!

We had a very busy weekend. Our first UKC Total Dog event.
I told Kermit he might as well earn his keep since we were here, and he pulled a Group 1! Even better-- he actually had a good time and was very bouncy and playful in the BIS ring! (He only growled a little when being examined, so I'll take it. XD)
Zaku was amazing and blasted through his lure coursing runs to earn his CAT title. Then he got Best in Breed in the show ring against a champion malinois, and got Group 2 in a very full Herding Group. This earned him his very first UKC Total Dog! Way to go baby dog!

This discussion about outcrossing in dobes happened ages ago but I wanted to know your opinion about the new/return to historical conformation breeds like retro mops or olde English bulldogges? Not sure how common/rare they are, pretty sure UKC has OEBs on their registry.
I have commented on them in the past but more or less:
I am dissatisfied with the majority of these projects making any real change because many times the dogs are just as extreme but in different ways, or because too much focus is on lengthening the snout and not enough on things like temperament and structure.
I do, however, like the projects that work closely with their respective breed to find a good middle ground that mostly everyone can agree on. Projects that say hey, this is just the start, and have sanctions in place to prevent people from breeding dogs with hidden health problems like hip dysplasia while pursuing a less extreme goal.

Taking photos of Marte to get him an AKC number so we can do coursing sports.
Shooting for a side view with all of him in it.

Nope.
I'll try again.

Not quite.

Dammit!

"Hm you have cheese and are clearly asking something of me. I will go with my default, that usually works"

Not perfect, but whatever, I'll take it.

And front view.
This has motivated me to finally start watching videos on stacking. I might even attend a class in September, we'll see. I do still wanna get him some show points via UKC altered conformation.

to recap: show poodle culture is the problem. details like coat maintenance and breeding stock and structure evals and young champions are part of it, but it all adds up to the bigger picture of:
we have created a breed where the majority of the competition lies in conformation showing, not performance. to have a competitive poodle, you have to show. to do well in shows, you have to adhere to the trends. the current trend is finishing young dogs. don’t adhere to that, you fall behind, you fail in the eyes of the breed culture.
and since it is the breed culture, it’s incredibly hard to deviate or change it. if you’re one person, you’ll probably have a hard time finishing your adult dog, because you may not have the support from your breed people.
so it is about coat and type and young dogs winning, but it also isn’t about those things at all. it’s about a culture of being the best, the first, the fastest. it’s about winning as quickly as possible to prove your stock is worthy.
how do we change this? i don’t know. i have some ideas, but they require the kind of support i, a brand new poodle person, probably can’t garner in a timely fashion.
so i’ll finish my current dog before he’s 2, establish myself as a person in the breed worth listening to and selling dogs to, and then i’ll see what i can do with my time here. i’ll do my best to slow down with my dogs, encourage others to do the same, and hopefully change the culture a little bit.

Day two of terrier derby is a wrap!
I entered Kermit in racing and he had his usual competitor, the elderly rat terrier. Kermit ran super well for the first two heats but randomly stopped in the middle of the third one. I had forgotten his muzzle so I borrowed one, and I think it was either too loose or too tight (my fault). He rallied well but still came in second. I'm still very pleased with how he ran.
In confo we got first place by being the only dachshund in the class. Then in the best in show (for non-patterdale terriers) he came in third! He was a total asshole on the judge's table, so that was a complete surprise. XD  Both judges said that they liked him a lot.
It was a super fun weekend, and I definitely want to do this again! Totally hooked.

Old time mountain feist dog breed
Tumblr media
There's no color standard for Mountain Feists they can be almost any color or pattern, but albinism is a disqualifying fault in the conformation ring.Īs a result of the mixed heritage of feists in general, different lines have different hunting styles some bay while trailing a squirrel and others are silent.Īs a result of the mixed heritage of feists in general, different lines have different hunting styles some bay while trailing a squirrel and others are silent. Today's Mountain Feists, as standardized by the United Kennel Club, generally range from 12 to 18 inches in height and 12 to 30 pounds in weight. Other names or types of feists include Bench Feist, Pencil Tailed Feist, Flop Eared Feist and Traditional Feist, and some breeders have their own proprietary names for their specific lines. Some of the other lines and types of feists are of different histories, however, and some breeders have their own crosses and lines. The original feists often were crosses between terriers and hounds the cross was gradually stabilized into the modern Mountain Feist. Today's Mountain Feist was likely developed in the rural South as a low-maintenance dog to hunt small game and eliminate vermin, and today is used mostly for hunting squirrel. This is a terrier-type dog that was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 2015. Today there are quite a few strains and types of feists in America, but the best known probably is the Mountain Feist. You’ll smile when he enters the room…he is a special little guy. These small treeing dogs-excellent companions of Florida squirrel hunters-are a uniquely American breed. On cool nights I’ll wake up to his silky, soft coat cuddled up against me. He is a fantastic companion, good looking and knows he’s good looking. He requires a lot of exercise, enjoys being chased through the house and being hooked to a leash and walked after each meal. He is a gentleman whose only questionable habit is habitually cleaning his girlfriend’s ears after having a drink of water. He is social, very athletic and is a master snuggler. Pop-i is now eight years old and possesses the energy level of a puppy. The little man and his girlfriend, y2Katy Doodle Bug, live in the ultimate kennel on a remote farm in the mountains of East Tennessee. Unfortunately (fortunately for me) the report of a rifle terrifies him hence the reason he was discarded. He is a true purebred Treeing Feist who comes unglued at the sight or scent of a squirrel. Kodi the Mountain Feist playing in the snow Kodi the Mountain Feist climbing up a tree Kentucky Jody (brown and white female) Treeing (aka Mountain) Feist dog, is registered with the National Kennel Club (NKC) and the United Kennel Club (UKC)- "We hunt mostly squirrels with our dogs, but rabbits and game birds as well." They do require lots of exercise and playtime, preferably with another dog." She is a wonderful pet, and I highly recommend this breed to anyone looking for an active, fun, loving dog. She enjoys playing chase, hunting for something to chase, swimming, digging in the sand, and sleeping under the covers. She has an unlimited amount of energy, and she loves dogs and people of all kinds. "Grommet is an American Treeing Feist, female, shown here at one year old. "Bear is an American Feist that has a champion bloodline. Movement: Swift and very agile, with flowing gait. The feet are small and compact, with arched toes and thick pads. Hind legs are muscular, with hocks slightly bent. The chest is fairly deep and well ribbed. The nose is black and self-colored according to coat. The muzzle is medium length and tapers to a point. The ears are set well on the side of head, wedge-shaped and held erect or semi-erect. The head has a medium-length muzzle with a slightly rounded skull. Coat colors include tricolor with spots, red and white, red, black, black and tan, blue and white, red brindle, and white. The coat of the Mountain Feist is short and smooth.
