1 Kings 12: Jeroboam Returns To Israel From Egypt
1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt.
3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him:
4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then come back to me.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.
9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.”
13 The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders,
14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.”
15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
16 When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share do we have in David,     what part in Jesse’s son? To your tents, Israel!     Look after your own house, David!”
So the Israelites went home.
17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
20 When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.
21 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand able young men—to go to war against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon.
22 But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:
23 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,
24 ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’” So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home again, as the Lord had ordered.
Golden Calves at Bethel and Dan
25 Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel.
26 Jeroboam thought to himself, “The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David.
27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam.”
28 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”
29 One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.
31 Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites.
32 He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made.
33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel. So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.

This possession-illness has a great time depth in South Africa, having been observed and recorded by some of the earliest European travelers and missionaries, including Callaway (1870), Shooter (1857), and Kidd (1904). A number of stereotyped symptoms announce the appearance of the disease in an apparently healthy individual, usually at a time of emotional crisis. He or she may experience loss of appetite or develop unusual food preferences. There are complaints of aches and pains in different parts of the body; the affected becomes morose and may go about constantly weeping, and he is plagued by dreams ("He becomes a house of dreams" Callaway 1870:260). The dreams, too, are generally stereotyped. The most frequently occurring subject seems to be water, especially rivers and floods, and the dreamer may see himself being carried away by such a current. Dreams of wild animals and personal death occur as well, and some see crowds of people who may be threatening to harm the dreamer.
Agitated, unable to sleep or eat, the man or woman may disappear altogether. After a time the individual returns, looking totally mad and disheveled after wandering about the land searching for roots and herbs seen in dreams. He may also have a snake draped about his neck, for snakes are believed to harbor the shades of ancestors. He becomes emaciated, his unanointed skin dry, and he is "incited by the spirits to leap over hedges and ditches, or even at times to bellow like a bull" (Krige 1936:301). Throughout this period of illness, which may last for several years, a number of diviners may be brought in to determine the cause, but the symptoms are not always immediately recognized as signs of spirit possession. The coming of convulsions, however, the use of snuff, the resulting sneezing and recurring yawning, belching, and passing of gas indicate that a spirit has entered the victim's body and wishes him to become a diviner. Some recent accounts describe how, during a fugue state, the possessed somehow finds himself at the household of an established diviner. The flight serves to establish both the diagnosis of the condition and identity of the person who will cure the condition and initiate the possessed into the ways of diviners (Lee 1970:135; Cole 1967:154).
illness leading you to a diviner for a cure, which can only be cured by becoming a diviner! just like the hmong shamans! i wonder if there's a word for this kind of thing. it seems so specific, but i feel like if you see it twice it must be true elsewhere. perhaps cf mental troubles leading one to going to seminary?

The Sun — just touched the Morning
The Sun — just touched the Morning —
The Morning — Happy thing —
Supposed that She had come to dwell —
And Life would all be Spring!
.
She felt herself supremer —
A Raised — Ethereal Thing!
Henceforth — for Her — What Holiday!
Meanwhile — Her wheeling King —
Trailed — slow — along the Orchards —
Her haughty — spangled Hems —
Leaving a new necessity!
The want of Diadems!
.
The Morning — fluttered — staggered —
Felt feebly — for Her Crown —
Her unanointed forehead —
Henceforth — Her only One!
Emily Dickinson
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Laura,
Everyday you grace me with your beautiful smile,
Your loveliness brings a tear to my eye.
Everyday you touch my Soul,
As your words make me whole
Everyday your words are my sunrise,
You are the sunshine in my eyes!
Everyday your love shines upon my face,
Like the sun warms my face, taking me to my happy place.
Laura, you are so beautiful and ever present.
I am so thankful, you are heaven sent.
Your Love is as steady and constant
in my heart, as the daily sunrise.
I am so blessed to have you in me,
In my heart and in my Soul
I love you deeply, Laura ❤️❤️❤️❤️

LRB; I find it so weird that people tell me the priest’s hands are anointed so therefore I shouldn’t touch Jesus in the Eucharist with my filthy unanointed hands, like he’s also gonna touch my literal unanointed tongue, trachea, stomach lining--it doesn’t get better after the hands folks.

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 18
Tozer in the Morning Responding to the Wake-Up Call
There is also spiritual sleep. Notice Ephesians 5:14: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead." This verse is often spoken to sinners, but it was not written to sinners. Ephesians was never written to sinners. It is not a message to sinners at all, but a message to one of the best churches in the New Testament. Yet the writer says, "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." Some of the Ephesians were in a somnolent condition; that is, they were morally good but unenlightened. They were religious but unanointed. It is perfectly possible for a good, faithful, loyal church member to be spiritually asleep--being in a spiritual state that parallels natural sleep. When your husband, your wife, your child, your relative, your friend or you go to sleep tonight, the fact that you are unconscious and out of the running for a while is not bothering y ou. You know that normally you will wake up again. You are not dead, but you are cut off from your environment, all but that which is reflex--breathing and a few other things. Likewise it is possible to be a Christian, to be in the church and yet be asleep spiritually. Then you have to be wakened suddenly. You will probably be ashamed of yourself, angry with yourself, frustrated and disconcerted and say, "What's the matter with me? All this time I was almost awake, but not quite."
Tozer in the Evening Harmonious Living
This brief list does not at all exhaust the number of infirmities we are likely to find in the Christian assembly. Who has not had to bear lovingly with a brother (or sister) who is afflicted with logorrhea, the incurable propensity to talk without pause or punctuation? That the talk is "religious" does not make it the less painful. And the unstable brother who spends his time either falling or getting up again, who is either leaping for joy or lying face down bewailing his hard lot--what church is there that does not have one or two such believers in it? Then there is the Mark Twain of the holy place, whose testimonies must always have their element of alleged humor; and to offset him somewhat is the man of heavy countenance who cannot smile and to whom a pleasantry is a mortal sin. Add to this list the sister whose prayers are accusations against the church or self-pitying complaints about the way she is being treated by other members of the flock.
What shall we do about these infirm brothers and sisters? If we deal with them according to their deserts, we may crush them beyond recovery. The thing to do is to accept them as crosses and bear them for Jesus' sake. In the great day when we have become like our Lord and have left all imperfections behind, we will not be sorry we endured patiently the infirmities of the weak.

Every Living Thing
Every living thing is sacred, whether it is within our understanding or not
Any Living Thing We like our definitions to hold a rigid understanding to exclude all we do not want to accept We like our gods to share our same opinions molding and shaping the divine into the unanointed We forget the ultimate holiness –within every single creation without any limit or exclusion –it is only love for any living thing It is only love that heals and begins to build bridges…

“I never told anyone that.” Oh trish.
Tumblr media
the dry sentence starters | still accepting.
Maybe if she was still eight years old and grinning in cereal commercials, staring down the lens for fall fashion lines, Mary might have offered some more fierceness. Might have argued for justice, for running screaming to somebody.
Or maybe she wouldn't have. She'd learned young that adults took little interest in what happened to children. Eaten alive.
A decade too late, though; it didn't matter now either way.
"You show yours, I show mine?" she offered quietly, bluntly, after a long pause, and rolled over tiny wrists on the tabletop, pale skin turned up as if in supplication to the pink-streaked evening sky. There, rendered almost invisible by scar treatments and the neatest of stitches — grimly recognisable even to the unanointed — twin lines cut a parallel course.

‘Severance’: the dystopia of work-life balance
What if Ben Stiller, the actor, the unanointed head of the Frat (some would say interchanging the ‘a’ and the ‘r’ would be mot juste) Pack figured out a way to cleave his brain to—in a life lived in parallel—go behind the camera to fill a directorial canvas of stunning, cerebral output? Poem #78
Archangel, scent of starfire on the lake,
Cultivator of boatwood, aura-bearer
Of the chart-hands and ocean-seers -
You are hereby declared unfit for office.
We have climbed the titan of your shoulder
To slay the feathered things of your back
And cast the shrapnel into radio waves.
We have spanned the colossus of your brow
And quarried your corneas for telescopes,
Planted in the empty gods of your femurs.
We have unwound the pigments of your hair
But never found the calculus of heaven
As the colours died grieving the distance.
Archangel, water-light of old galleons,
Waste of your unmaking falls back to us
Until you are known only by the ripples
Of that same water; cobalt-orange
Like a sunset remembered from a distant
Continent, or a love left unspoken,
Or a language made to speak of horizons.
You are forgiven, unanointed beast,
For thinking we needed more than your body.
You are forgiven for thinking you were enough.
The ruin of your face redraws the cantos
That first woke you from the nothingness,
And the last powders of divinity
Melt on the dimming light-blade of your tongue:
Envy of the beetle pyres. Envy them their churn.
Envy of the nebulae they build and shroud and burn.
Envy the mycelia. Envy them their dross.
Envy every constellation made of dregs and loss.
Envy of the comet-falls. Envy them their height.
Envy as their yaws undo the stasis of the night.
Envy of the frogspawn. Envy them their mire.
Envy as the clot grows limbs to pull apart the briar.
Envy of the lunar lamps. Envy them their caste.
Envy of the shapes that know the light will never last.

In my experience "'free speech' is a dogwhistle" is a dogwhistle, for something anywhere from "a council of my friends who never outgrew middle school should be able to actually send people to the gulag over fandom discourse" to "democracy can only work as a weak, controlled facade over oligarchy, and that facade must be protected by suppressing all unanointed criticism of the state". Loudly proclaiming opposition to fascism does not make one's ideas immune to devolving into fascism. Also nice URL!
