How Waves Could Quietly Overtake Solar & Wind. Every crashing wave delivers a pulse of power. Add them all up, and the ocean carries more energy than the roughly 30,000 TWh of electricity generated globally in 2023. But for decades, wave power has been a sea of broken dreams. But in 2023, buoys from a Swedish company called CorPower survived record-breaking 60-foot waves — and kept sending clean power to the grid. With costs plunging and the first full wave farms on the horizon, a decades-old dream might finally be about to break through. So the question is: Is wave energy finally ready for prime time — or will it be just another shipwreck in the history of clean power?

How Self-Healing Solar Panels Could Change Everything
Solar panels are largely crystalline structures grown in labs.  They’ve found a way to use the energy from the sun to cause the crystal to melt and regrow, in place.  This dramatically increases the lifespan of solar arrays, which is especially important in space.

So I remembered this post, because I really want solarpunk stained glass, but when it crossed my dash today I realized the original post is 7 years old, which is pretty old in the context of an emerging technology.
I looked up Oxford Photovoltaics, from the original post, hoping that they’d have tinted solar glass on the market by now, but while they do have some extremely cool ultra-efficient solar cells in production right now, they are the traditional opaque kind.
So I searched for transparent solar cells and came across this Undecided With Matt Ferrell video. I don’t follow this guy really, but I’ve come across his videos while researching other renewable energy topics and have generally found him to be well-researched and evenhanded.
Quick & messy summary of the video:
There are still companies working on fully and semi-transparent solar glass
No form of solar glass captures the energy from sunlight as efficiently as traditional opaque cells.
Traditional opaque cells, from what I can tell, typically capture 22-25% of the sun’s energy. Oxford Photovoltaics actually say their solar panels broke a record with a cell with over 28% efficiency.
Semi-transparent solar glass tends to max out at about 10% efficiency
Fully transparent (though still usually faintly tinted) solar glass tends to have efficiency of about 1% :(
However! The tinting in both semi-transparent and some forms of transparent solar glass tends to reduce heat transfer into buildings, meaning they require less cooling.
Also if you have a huge surface area to cover, like a skyscraper or a shopping center, even the low efficiency glass can add up to be worth it
However, some of these windows also degrade in sunlight within 5-10 years. Most opaque solar cells last much longer
All that said, there are cells being produced and installed around the world, and engineers are still working on increasing their efficiency and durability.
Definitely check out the video, which is not long and is better sourced and expressed than this 😅

TL;DR: We’re getting super close to solar art glass windows (and maybe floors) actually, but there’s still work to do.

Just imagine a world full of beautiful stained glass windows which also generate electricity…

not at all a fan of undecided with matt ferrell. extremely credulous, everything could be a game changer, not really a critical eye - you really shouldn't buy everything someone tries to sell you

I just stumbled on this channel and this new tech looks amazing!
It’s a new kind of battery made out of nuclear waste and man-made diamonds. How cool and futuristic sounding is that!?

Solar Panels Plus Farming? Agrivoltaics Explained
Undecided with Matt Ferrell
Solar panels plus farming? Agrivoltaics explained. Could combining solar panels plus farming be a viable solution to the growing demand for food production and energy demand? Let’s take a closer look at electrifying our crops (not literally electrifying crops) … well, adding solar to our farm land as well as some of the side benefits and challenges it creates.

How This TRULY Omni-Directional Wind Turbine is Genius. Small wind turbines, or SWTs, have low efficiencies that rarely justify their high costs. They also have to contend with the same kinds of considerations that your typical turbine does, like noise, vibration, environmental impacts, and aesthetics. In closer proximity to people, these factors are that much more important (and difficult) to nail. There’s a lot of high-speed winds in major cities, and someday soon wind turbines might be integrated seamlessly into your surroundings. How can SWTs turn windy city streets into an opportunity? When can apartment dwellers start to produce their own wind energy? And why was one SWT company inspired by a NASA rover shaped like a beach ball?

How This TRULY Omni-Directional Wind Turbine is Genius
Wind turbines are finally catching up to Waterworld.
These turbines are designed to be used on a small scale, with wind coming from any direction, (in 3 dimensions).  This is because wind is often 3d in urban environments.
We would still need neighbourhood-level power storage to make this viable.

A List of Fanfictions I want to write...
Movie Au’s
“Easy A” au, probably based on Klance or Shatt
Disney’s “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” au, probably Hance or Shatt
“The House” au (The Will Ferrell movie), undecided ships, but probably primarily involving Coran because there are not enough Coran fics in the world
“Megamind” au. I have so many ideas for this one, and I can’t decide whether to have Lance & Hunk be Megamind & Minion, or Shiro and Matt. I’d love to bounce ideas off people.
Disney’s “Treasure Planet” au, 100% with Keith as Jim Hawkins
Real-World Au’s
Paladin’s Just Dance competition, featuring dancer!Lance and/or dancer!Keith
“Fanfiction meta,” in which person a meets person b through the writing of fanfiction
“Animal Adoption Center,” in which the paladins work in an adoption centre or plan to adopt an animal (This is less of a plot and more of a base that I’d love to find a plot in)
The Paladins at a Pride Festival and/or Pride Parade because why not
Drag Queen au, because I’d love to create drag persona`s for them all
Relationship tropes
Teacher x Single Parent, probably Allurance, Shance, Lancelot, or Sheith
Nerd x Cool Kid, probably Klance, Shance, Sheith, or Heith
Royalty x Peasant, probably Allurance, Klance, Lancelot, or Shance
Mermaid x Human, probably Lancelot, Klance, Sheith, or Allurance
// I have a lot of fanfiction ideas that I want to write, and if any of you guys want to see one of these then let me know because if other people want it I’ll be more likely to write it! Some will just be short oneshots and some might turn into full-fledged novels. I don’t even know yet. //

How A Brick & Rock Battery Is Changing Energy Storage
Seen a few links to stuff like this and wasn’t sure what to make of it.
It’s a THERMAL storage cell.  You get a high thermal mass material, like say, rocks and bricks, and trap it inside a highly insulated shell.  Some of them can maintain the heat high enough to make steam.  Or it can be used for various heating needs.  It can also store waste heat and turn it useable.
How do you get the heat out?  Run air through it.
He actually complains that it doesn’t produce enough heat to melt iron, which needs a blast furnace, so... we can let that one slide.
This is, reportedly, a fantastic energy storage solution.

5 Best Alternatives to Finally Replace Plastic. Plastic is firmly established in our daily lives, but we all know plastic recycling doesn’t really happen. So what can we do? We can convert starches, fungi, seaweed, heck, even shrimp tails into plastic alternatives and bioplastic. Let’s review five of the most interesting advances I’ve come across — including that shrimpy stuff. But are any of these plastic alternatives actually viable? Or are we literally grasping at straws?

Solid State Batteries Are REALLY Here: Yoshino Power Station
Solid-state batteries are here.  They are still nascent, but offer much longer lifespans. Of course, they aren’t actually included in anything, yet.
Rough math has it cheaper than the Telsa per kWh.
