Special Post: BTTF Patient Interview

We are so grateful and excited to share a special interview with one of our very own patients.  We hope you enjoy reading it, and that it brings attention to the obstacles experienced by low-income patients seeking breast screenings and diagnostic care.

INTERVIEW WITH BTTF AND PROJECT RENEWAL PATIENT, CARRIE*

*Please note the name and neighborhood of the patient has been changed to protect her identity. 

Carrie was referred to BTTF by Manhattan Cancer Services Program, New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

1. What is your name, age, and where do you live? Carrie; I’m age 39 and I live in Woodmere, Queens.

2. What is your job? What do you enjoy (hobbies)? I work as an occupational therapy assistant. I’m currently a graduate student studying for my master’s degree in occupational therapy. I have no insurance right now. I also like to play guitar, and enjoy cooking and crafts.

3. When were you first introduced to Breast Treatment Task Force? On Twitter, there was a tweet from Governor Cuomo about free breast exams for women over 40, so I called the number and they directed me to the Cancer Services Program office at New York Presbyterian. Since I’m under the age of 40, the staff member at NY Presbyterian referred me to Breast Treatment Task Force.

4. What procedures did you receive? At what facilities(s)? How did it feel knowing your services would be covered? I received a mammogram on the Project Renewal Scan Van, and a follow-up sonogram at Lenox Hill Radiology in Kew Gardens. Both services were paid for by BTTF. I didn’t need further tests, but was relieved to know it would be covered under BTTF if I did. Carrie also described how grateful she was to know that her services would be covered when she could not afford the out of pocket costs for screening or diagnostics.

5. How did the BTTF and Project Renewal teams support you? The BTTF and Project Renewal team calls and consistent follow-up provided support for me. I received calls before and after appointments. This felt unique to BTTF and Project Renewal, and demonstrates how much attention each patient receives.

6. What do you wish more people knew about accessing screening and diagnostic care without insurance? Patients without insurance, especially low-income patients, live with the anxiety of not knowing their state of health. Services like BTTF and Project Renewal Scan Van are like a lifeline for patients like me. They provide answers, and allow patients to know they can check their own health.

7. How has access to breast care made a difference in your life? I have a history of cysts on my breasts so I need routine check-ups. I was previously covered under a hospital program, but the program was defunded. Having access to breast care through BTTF removes the financial burden of care, and allows people like me to take control of my breast health.
