On Epic Fantasy, Gender, Changes in Belief and Samantha Shannon’s The Priory of the Orange Tree
Ordinarily I don't write about books here, but I had something I wanted to get out about what I've been reading lately, so here goes...
Tumblr media
I’ve always maintained that high fantasy is something in which I have very little interest. While friends and family have raved about Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones over the years, I’ve felt a great disconnect from those stories and worlds, and I always assumed that it was the genre itself at the root of the problem. Meanwhile, I was raving separately about the immense creative achievement of The Matrix (all of them, not just the original film), which is (if I’m being honest with myself) high fantasy wearing the skin of science fiction. Chosen one narratives, prophecy, fantastical creatures, magic systems, and a great battle to determine the fate of humanity are the makeup of The Matrix, just as they would be any other work of high fantasy.
Tumblr media
I learned the hard way during my undergraduate degree and subsequent three years as a post-graduate student that reading for pleasure can very easily fall by the wayside when you have to read so much for work – the act of reading itself becomes a massive chore. So, when I left academia and started getting back into reading for pleasure in a habitual way, part of the journey for me was discovering my taste in literature as an adult, which meant giving fantasy another try.
The discoveries I’ve made since getting back on the horse have been a mixed bag – some expected and some very much unexpected. Among those realisations was the fact that fantasy as a genre is not as immediately repulsive to me as I thought; what is repulsive to me, on vibes alone, is fantasy written by men. It turns out that my lifelong struggle with masculinity (I’ve only recently begun coming out to myself and others as non-binary - I use he/they pronouns) applies to literature, too. Surprise, surprise, The Matrix’s exploration of gender identity and transness was more relatable to me than the aggressive hyper-masculinity of Game of Thrones and to a lesser extent Lord of the Rings (yes I know the consensus is that LotR is very gay, but it’s also very male). So, while in search of something to read on my local library’s eBook lending service, I decided to give Samantha Shannon’s epic fantasy novel, The Priory of the Orange Tree, a shot, and I’m so very glad that I did.
TPotOT has been misleadingly described by some as ‘feminist Game of Thrones’. And, while I can see where those people are coming from, this work feels like its own entirely distinct thing. Rather than plunging into the darkest, grimmest depths of humanity’s worst moral failings, as George R.R. Martin does almost fetishistically, Shannon uses her beautifully engrossing fantasy world to explore the necessity of trust and cooperation with those whom one’s belief system might deem unacceptable, in order to confront something that threatens everybody. This is less an allegory for climate change, and more an allegory about dogma.
The world of this Roots of Chaos series is built upon a series of conflicting, yet paradoxically overlapping, paper-thin religious belief systems. These systems hold the societies of Shannon’s four, wonderfully drawn POV characters together, and what makes the narrative of this gargantuan book so captivating, is the necessity of these characters coming to terms with the elements of their belief systems that have been falsely constructed in order to serve an agenda. This isn’t a didactic story about one morality system being superior to another, but rather one of learning to find common ground with those who believe differently to you, accepting truths when you are confronted with them, and having enough faith in humanity to trust that society won’t collapse as a result.
The Priory of the Orange Tree isn’t the only book in this series (Shannon has since published a prequel entitled A Day of Fallen Night), but it does function as a standalone story with a definitive ending. That being said, Shannon smartly chooses to end her story at the conclusion of its central conflict – the battle with a terrifying, all-powerful dragon called The Nameless One – rather than spending extra time exploring the aftermath. We don’t know whether the colossal revelations poised to shatter this world’s religions will lead to societal collapse, or whether the characters’ faith in humanity is justified. Anyone who knows me is aware of how I feel about certainty in narrative storytelling. Asking questions is much more interesting than answering them.
Ultimately, The Priory of the Orange Tree is a story that leads (and ends) with its characters. The book is deeply concerned with the repercussions of its plot on its intricately detailed world, but it is more focused on the way these characters grow and change when confronted with undeniable truths. Eadaz uq-Nāra is up there with my very favourite protagonists, and her journey and relationships are rapturously entertaining and moving. Shannon clearly adores her characters, which makes it so very easy for us as readers to fall in love with them, too.
I’m so glad to have found this book. TPotOT, along with Becky Chambers’ miraculous space opera, The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, have been genuine reassurances to me as I come to terms with who I am as an adult, both in my tastes as a reader, and more fundamentally in myself and my identity. In short: genre fiction written by queer women is good for you.

The Shift Key: Book 1 of Key Connections
Summary:
Humans have long since roamed the Earth, but beside them there has always been... The Others.
As the first human to work for Ironside Security's cyber division, Raina knows she has a precedent to set. With a shiny new degree and the knowledge that she is the best at what she does, it should be easy so long as she follows the rules.
One assignment is all it takes to ruin her carefully made plans.
What happens when a stubborn techie and a surly tiger cross paths?
Soren had thought the hardest part about becoming the Warden of the Northern region would be keeping his temper in check. Then when people start mysteriously disappearing, his responsibilities put the one person he thought he'd never see again directly in his path.
One mistake could send her back into his memories.
Preorder:
This is my first book and as of right now I'm shooting to have it done by end of year! Please check it out, and enjoy the first ever excerpt below the cut!
Excerpt:
“Soren, just because no one else has physically touched the cameras, doesn’t mean that they can’t just hack the cameras.”
She was back around, hands flying across her keyboard before she could get anxious over how he would take that news. She was already in the midst of pulling up the information on each camera stream access when she heard the sound of something breaking.
Temen’s following gasp but lack of reprimand confirmed that it was probably Soren who had caused the ruckus, as Raina couldn’t imagine Temen letting anyone else get away with it.
Raina felt more than saw Soren come up behind her, her back heating with his proximity. His shadow fell over her shoulder, and she fought down a shiver when he gripped the back of her chair and his knuckles brushed her back.
“Rain, I need you to explain exactly what you mean by that.“
She hadn’t been so close to a man since her brief stint in the dating scene during her undergraduate studies, and she rationalized that was why her entire body suddenly felt like her skin was far too tight.
‘Oh I need you far, far, away from me,’ she thought to herself as she turned her nervous energy into her job.
“What I mean,” she started quickly,” is that if you wanted a truly isolated camera system you should have gone a little more old school and kept it to physical tapes. Downside to that would be the endless reels you’d need to keep confidential, but then,” she said, beginning to punctuate each word with a quick snip and enlargement of specific text-
“-you wouldn’t have this problem.”
Before them were a series of IP addresses that Raina had surmised did not match anyone currently allowed access to the feeds.
She had thought jumping ahead of the curve and showing him the problem would get him out of her space faster, but instead he leaned far enough in that she could feel his hard stomach against the back of her head. Suddenly he was close enough that she could smell him: clean, woodsy, and something that was utterly Soren.
The unexpected familiarity of it broke something in her, the crack beneath her rib cage as sharp as any bone. This was why she hadn’t wanted to come back. At sixteen she had been afraid she couldn’t live without him. Now she was twenty six, and once again she wanted nothing more than to turn into his arms and bury herself in him.
Worse, he wasn’t even in his furry form.
“You wanna translate for me?”
She could practically feel the bass in his voice, the rough under current of his near constant growl rolling through her and making her nipples peak against her will.
There was one haunting second where he leaned in impossibly closer, the heat between them suddenly stifling, everyone else forgotten to her human senses except for the shifter caging her in. She felt trapped in way she couldn’t decide if she loved her hated.
When she saw him brace a hand beside her keyboard, she fought not to think about how the too sharp tips of his claws would feel against her skin.
She was a scant second away from embarrassing herself in front of her entire team when she managed to find the will to bring her chair back in a hard spin, jumping up and knocking him off her.
He was, of course, staring at her with a shit eating grin. Those bright blue eyes of his were shining with the same heat currently burning through her body, so she opened her mouth and killed it as brutally as she killed.
“Translation? Those are all the times someone has accessed your security feeds without your permission.”
The smirk finally fell off his face, but it didn’t make her feel better.
“Who?” he questioned.
Raina eyed him for a second, trying to decide the best way to approach the situation.
“Right now I just know that the feeds were accessed, the who will take more time,” she told him truthfully. She had automatically ran the addresses as soon as they were tagged as unknown, but they had all been fake.
Evidently having finally decided it was safe to join the conversation, Temen said asked “How much time?”
Raina understood the severity of the situation given the fact that the creeps they were looking for where in the people snatching industry. It was a time sensitive situation, and as Raina ran through the possibilities in her mind, the options were not looking pretty.
She could do it for sure, though requesting the necessary access to certain databases would take time. That was what she couldn’t accurately gauge, as her first instinct was to bypass those databases to get to what she wanted. One route was right, and one was illegal.
She knew the right thing to do, though.
Her mouth had barely opened to tell them it would take 5-7 business days to get the proper clearences before Soren was once again demanding her attention. He was in her space in seconds, large body moving with grace.
“You can do it now cant you?”
From inches away, he looked down on her, gaze sure.
So she sidestepped towards her team lead like a coward and shook her head.
“No, I can’t-“
“Can’t or won’t?” he pressed, moving forward.
She threw up her hands in defeat, as if that would stop him.
“Soren its not legal for me to-“
“Legal?” he bit out, voice dropping into something less human, “Since when have the rules ever stopped you?”

Do you have any good resources to point us towards to read up on the historic origins of this conflict to understand how we got here?
absoLUTELY i do! i first want to highlight that Haymarket Books has three ebooks on Palestine available to download for free. Of course, all Haymarket Books are from a specific perspective (one that I share), so be mindful of that. I'm going to try to share sources from a variety of perspectives:
A History of Modern Palestine by Ilan Pappé (and generally anything by Pappé) is a great book that does a lot to debunk the idea that the conflict is somehow something ~primordial or ancient
UN history of the "Question of Palestine." Obviously for the sake of digestibility, they skip over some details. But it's a good primer to avoid being overwhelmed. Somewhat related to this, I'd look at the Wikipedia article for Theodor Herzl to learn more about the Zionist movement and the lack of inevitability of a Jewish state in Palestine.
I'd also, uh, learn about the Irgun party which was founded by Menachem Begin who later became the prime minister of Israel...just to really reconsider whether those calls for non-violence are in good faith.
The UN has a Special Rapporteur on Palestine, who releases TONS AND TONS of information, including historical information.
And this Al Jazeera guide, which includes a video, is really great for a historical perspective too!
In terms of sources to follow what's happening, I would say Haaretz (the Israeli paper of record) and Al Jazeera (note: funded by the Qatari government, but I'd say one of the more level state-funded news sources) are especially great. You can always trust the Irish to be nuanced (and also in solidarity, but that's a separate matter lmao).
I will also note: the conflict isn't more or less complex than other conflicts. What makes it uncomfortable is, in the words of my undergraduate professor, the remarkable amounts of trauma on both sides. This is also a conflict that implicates issues of race and power. What it is not, despite everyone in the world telling you otherwise, is a purely religious conflict.
I hope this really helps, anon!

Hey, have you started reading the angels and demons encyclopedias you talked about? I wanted to hear your opinion on them; are they cool and interesting 👀
I’ve dabbled in them, but honestly, ebook encyclopedias suck if they don’t have hyperlinks (which these don’t). Kindle’s native search function isn’t much help, since it shows you each instance where the search term shows up in strict chronological order instead of putting the entry you want first! I guess I could read them straight through like novels, but that’s the sucker’s way of reading reference books! Should’ve got physical copies instead 😡
I'm getting a lot more out of the YouTube channel ESOTERICA. Dr. Sledge's channel is the next best thing to auditing an undergraduate class in Western esoterica. For example, here's his video on the Malleus Maleficarum, the infamous 15th-century inquisitor's manual that kicked off the European witch trials:

One fun fact: Witches can make your penis disappear!

The Sentence
Tumblr media
The Sentence by Louise Erdrich
it feels almost criminal that i have waited this long to read any Louise Erdrich. her work has been in my periphery since 2004, when my best friend wrote heavily about one of her books for her undergraduate thesis (sorry B, i still haven't read The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse). i picked up this one earlier this year, when i was only just getting back into reading more regularly, because (i'm pretty sure) that same friend recommended it, and i love ghosts.
this book contains so much, and somehow still feels so simple and straightforward. like, of course, perfectly ordinary for Tookie to help a crush by transporting a body, who hasn't laughed at greeting card that promises the same? totally expected for the justice system to work against and incarcerate an Ojibwe woman, and just totally normal life stuff for her to marry the former cop who arrested her after she gets out and then have a fraught relationship with his grown daughter and surprise grandchild. and come on, what indigenous-owned independent bookstore isn't haunted by the ghost of a regular customer, especially during early COVID-19, in Minneapolis, amid the grief and rage following the murder of George Floyd?
SO MUCH HAPPENS in this book, but it's all narrowed to Tookie's pov--her own very personal and specific wants and fears, her struggle and belief. it's beautifully done, so delicately balanced, a book that fills you like a warm meal even as you're crying and remembering what you felt like sitting in bed and looking out the window and wondering when you would ever feel safe out there again. i hesitate to call it magical realism, even though i think that's where it falls in the range of "kinds of books i like," because Tookie presents every event as equally real--and in February of 2020, i would have thought a worldwide pandemic and indefinite lockdown just as unlikely as a retail ghost and the otherworldly power of an old book (which is to say, all things i could imagine happening but had never happened to me personally). magnificent.
the deets
how i read it: as an ebook from the library, via Libby! this was at a time when i hadn't yet gotten back into the habit of reading and so frequently forgot to go back to books i was in the middle of, but this one was so compelling i actually finished it before it was due.
try this if you: are ready to process some of that 2020 terror, love a main character whose flaws are part of her charm, want a book with a majority native cast of characters, or just want to hang out in somebody else's weird life for a while.
some memorable moments: i read this a while ago and no longer have it handy to quote, so this is a fun test of my bad memory! there were a lot of scenes i really liked that i can recall, but one that sticks out as very charming to me was when Tookie's artist coworker at the bookstore closed herself in a repurposed confessional booth to decorate the inside, got a little high on the glue, and in this altered state confirmed Tookie's suspicion that a former customer was haunting the store. I loved everything about this; the slightly weird artsy coworker, the confessional in the bookstore (based, i presume, on the one that lives in Erdrich's store, Birchbark Books), the triumph of having someone validate your ghost theory and the tragedy of wondering if it's just because she's been breathing glue fumes.
also, i just love so so much that Louise Erdrich wrote herself into her own book, as the owner of the bookstore in the book which is not quite, but almost, her own bookstore in real life. please i want to just chat with her for several hours, what a mind.
