The Three Count: The Undertaker’s Spookiest Moments

It’s spooky season, wrestling fans. Halloween is practically here, and while it’s easy to dive down a rabbit hole of horror movies, you don’t have to watch The Conjuring or Nightmare on Elm Street to get your fix. There’s plenty of crossover between the horror genre and the wrestling world, and nobody embodies this overlap more than The Undertaker.

They don’t call him “The Deadman” for nothing; he’s creepy, plain and simple. Over the years, ‘The Phenom” has been involved in plenty of scary moments. In honor of Halloween, let’s take a look at three that stand above the rest.

THE UNDERTAKER ASCENDS TO THE HEAVENS (ROYAL RUMBLE 1994)

By 1994, “The Phenom” had already been built up into an unstoppable force, but he seemingly met his match when he crossed paths with Yokozuna. A mountain of a man, Yokozuna weighed over 500 pounds. No mere mortal could hope to stand a chance against him, and even the supernatural powers of The Undertaker failed to stop him when they clashed in a Casket Match at the Royal Rumble.

The fan-favorite star came close, but Yokozuna had plenty of help; Diesel, Jeff Jarrett, Adam Bomb, Jeff Jarrett, and The Headshrinkers aided the powerhouse and trapped “The Deadman” in the casket, which promptly started smoking. On the video screen, The Undertaker (seemingly stuck inside the casket) appeared and vowed to get revenge once he came back. The casket then exploded on the screen, and an Undertaker lookalike was shown rising to the heavens. Here, WWE heavily leaned into the dark side of The Undertaker’s powers, showing that the future Hall of Famer transcended the typical rules of wrestling in a way fans had rarely seen before.

THE UNDERTAKER IS BURIED ALIVE

The Undertaker and Mankind had a classic rivalry, and they competed in several unforgettable matches. The Undertaker throwing Mankind off the Hell in a Cell cage is one of the most famous highlights in WWE history. Fans also look fondly back on their Boiler Room Brawl match in 1996. But one of their most remarkable battles often flies under the radar. At In Your House: Buried Alive, the two foes clashed in the first-ever Buried Alive Match. As the name suggests, the only way to win the bour was to bury your opponent in an open grave. At the time, this stipulation was eye-opening, to say the least, as it implied that the wrestlers involved wanted to leave their opponent lying under a mound of dirt rather than simply beat them in a standard bout.

As with the aforementioned Casket Match, it took more than one man to put The Undertaker down. This time, Justin Bradshaw (the future JBL), Goldust, Hunter Heart Helmsey, Crush, and The Executioner helped Mankind put The Undertaker in the ground. But it took much more than that to keep “The Phenom” down; the post-match sound of thunder hinted at his looming return, and he later returned from the grave to seek vengeance once more. “The Deadman” lived up to his name, proving that he would keep coming back, much like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers.

MIDEON GETS SACRIFICED

Like many long-running horror movie monsters, The Undertaker veered off in different directions throughout his career as WWE aimed to keep him compelling. These shifts don’t always pan out — Jason X remains reviled by many Friday the 13th fans. However, when the WWE followed this model with The Undertaker in 1999, it met the objective of freshening up the character and creating more memorable moments.

Who could possibly forget The Undertaker performing sacrifices on live TV during his run with The Ministry of Darkness? The group targeted a number of performers with these ceremonies, but Dennis Knight’s transformation into Mideon remains one of the wildest examples. The arena was surrounded in darkness as The Undertaker and his acolytes, clad in robes, performed something comparable to a Satanic sacrifice on RAW. The Undertaker proceeded to cut his hand and feed the blood to Knight, who subsequently convulsed on the table. To top it all off, The Undertaker used the knife to carve his symbol on Knight’s chest. The whole scene was right out of a cult-centric horror movie, and in hindsight, it’s somewhat surprising it aired on RAW.

This Halloween season, don’t just rush to watch the same old horror movies; branch out a bit and seek out some of the frightening scenes the wrestling world has offered fans over the years. More specifically, it’s a good time to take a walk down memory lane and revisit some of The Undertaker’s classic moments. From seemingly getting destroyed on-screen to performing sacrifices, “The Deadman” delivered a range of scares over the years, and the assortment offers something for everyone.

Various WWF Wrestlers x Fem Reader- "Criminal Minds"

As if the 1990's didn't have enough angsty music and female singer-songwriters (not like there's anything wrong with that), 1997 was female singer-songwriter Fiona Apple's breakthrough year.

During that year, Fiona rose to popularity with her biggest hit to date "Criminal", and especially for the controversial and infamous music video accompanying that song.

In the late 1990's, the World Wrestling Federation was growing in popularity, especially by the time they changed their logo to what's known as the scratch logo and called themselves "WWF Attitude".

The World Wrestling Federation was becoming increasingly more for adults and teenagers during the late 1990's.

Because Fiona Apple's "Criminal" was so popular (including the music video), to promote their up-and-coming Wrestlemania in 1998, the World Wrestling Federation did a commercial promoting Wrestlemania that parodied the "Criminal" music video.

The commercial starts off with you holding a camera in front of your face, much like Fiona at the beginning of the video, only for the camera filming you to now show a shot of one of those WWF Ring Masters figures with a huge head and small body, the figure was that of the Undertaker.

Soon, the commercial cuts to you, Luna Vachon and Sunny laying on the floor.

Luna was wearing her transparent tutu with a matching bra whereas Sunny was wearing her Legion of Doom outfit she wore when she escorted them to the ring.

 The back of your head was resting on top of Luna's knees, whereas Luna was laying sideways on the floor while Sunny was laying on the floor where you could see her torso.

Luna and Sunny were filmed from below their heads, much like everyone else in Fiona's "Criminal" video besides Fiona, but it's obvious that's Luna and Sunny laying down.

Like Fiona in the video, you were looking into the camera and actually singing a parody of Fiona's "Criminal" with similar lyrics.

Some of the lyrics in Fiona Apple's "Criminal"---especially the beginning of the song---could easily describe professional wrestling, but Fiona would've been accused of selling out if her signature song was playing in a commercial, especially for something as low brow as professional wrestling.

Fiona probably wouldn't like the World Wrestling Federation---even during the Attitude era---anyway.

Granted, when Fiona Apple was at the height of her popularity, a lot of people hated her.

The parody you sang in this Wrestlemania commercial was written by Jim Johnston, who was in charge of the music during the World Wrestling Federation.

Sometimes the camera filming you filmed you at your navel, where your hands were unbuttoning and unzipping your pants.

Other times, the camera shot you laying down by Luna's knees and your hand lifting up your shirt to show off your belly button, although you didn't have a navel piercing.

The video also showed Goldust's legs laying down on the floor, but he was filmed below his navel during this part of the commercial.

One moment in the video showed Mick Foley's Dude Love walking to a closet, and Dude Love was filmed below his head when he walked to the closet, but it was obvious that was you.

When he opened the closet door, you were sitting on the floor inside the closet with your eyes looking sideways at something.

This commercial also showed shots of an Austin 3:16 shirt laying on the floor and a "Raw is War" shirt sprawled on top of a chair.

Of course there were shots of you standing by a sink wearing a tank top and panties, only for you to shed them off until you were just wearing your panties and your back was turned in front of the camera while your arms were clutching your chest.

There was one part of you laying in a bathtub with your head sandwiched in between Kane's feet and your head peeping out of the water.

Kane's legs were laying in front of you, and Kane was wearing his signature red bodysuit and black boots even in the bathtub.

Your hands were clutching on to Kane's ankles while your head slowly sunk down into the water and your eyes looked into the camera with a smirk on your face.

Your hair was wet during this moment of you in the bathtub with Kane's feet and legs, and you were actually naked in this scene, but no nudity was shown.

In between shots of your head in a bathtub sandwiched in between Kane's feet and legs was a shot of Owen Hart's singlet slung on top of a chair.

Another scene had Shawn Michaels sitting on a couch wearing his signature red tights with slightly torn hearts on them while you laid on your stomach across the couch with your head near Shawn's lap, where one of your hands was stroking his thigh while his hands made an "x" shape in front of his crotch.

After that Shawn Michaels part, you were seen laying on the couch topless, albeit laying on your stomach with your breasts not actually shown but your eyes looking into the camera with this coy look on your face.

You would have a moment of Kane's booted foot stroking the side of your neck, although you were worried that the bottom of his scuffed boot would hurt your neck from sliding across it.

There was a brief part in this video of one of those WWF Bone Crunchin' Buddies dolls of Stone Cold Steve Austin sitting in the corner of the same room this commercial was filmed at.

After that part of a Bone Crunchin' Buddies doll sitting in the corner, the commercial showed you sitting on a couch and taking pictures of Sunny in her Legion of Doom outfit, although Sunny was filmed from behind in this commercial.

Sunny was the World Wrestling Federation's it girl in 1996 and 1997, she would've been the star of this commercial, but you were rising as a star at the beginning of 1998, and your character you played was overtly oversexualized, so it made sense for you to be the star of the commercial.

A few more scenes in this commercial had your head near Shawn's lap while you laid next to him, Shawn of course being filmed from below his navel and his hands making an "x" shape above his crotch, your hand stroking his leg as you looked into the camera looking forlorn and singing this parody.

Some shots in this commercial had your eyes looking red when you looked into the camera.

You weren't wearing contact lenses, it was just a type of camera filming your eyes that made them look red, like in Fiona's "Criminal" music video.

One shot had these snapshot photos (like in a photobooth) of you lined up and looking at the camera, whereas one part in the video had a television playing clips of you sneering at the camera and the shots looked like a sex tape almost.

There was also a part in this commercial of you sitting naked with your arms clutching your breasts and the camera filming you behind your back while your head was slightly turned sideways and looking into the camera.

During that aforementioned moment, you were sitting inside of a steam room in a sauna.

One of your favorite parts in this commercial was when you were laying on top of a mattress with Triple H, where the top of his head was filmed while he rested the side of his face on the bed while you had one of your arms draped across his back and you looked into the camera.

You were laying right next to him and your body touched his body, you snuggled nearby him and cuddled him, closing your eyes and snuggling near his bicep.

This scene with you and Triple H referenced a bed part in Fiona's "Criminal" video, and the Rock would've been a better contender since the Rock had short dark hair that most resembled the guy Fiona cuddled with, but Triple H was sexier than the Rock in your opinion, as well as the sexiest man in the WWF at the beginning of 1998 and Triple H was your bae on screen and off screen, so it made sense.

During this moment of you and Triple H in bed together, there was a shot of Shawn Michaels sitting in a chair in front of you and Trips, whereas Shawn's hands were crossed in an "x" shape above his crotch, although Shawn was being filmed from behind his back and behind his head.

Soon,  the Wrestlemania and WWF logo appeared on screen to advertise this commercial.

This commercial was short enough to actually be a commercial and not a music video.

If this commercial came out in 1999, there would be scenes of Mick Foley's Mr. Socko laying on the floor or on a table, crushed empty beer cans and Al Snow's mannequin head sitting somewhere, and parts like WWF women like Jacqueline or Ivory ripping your camisole and panties off of you until you're just wearing panties, maybe shots of Sable and Jacqueline trying to rip each others dresses off underwater.

The part where the television rises from the floor and plays something on television would've played that infamous black-and-white GTV segments that happened that year.

Stephanie McMahon would've also probably stared in this commercial had it been filmed in 1999, she kind of looks like Fiona Apple but not as skinny.

The man remained silent. He had sensed a foreign presence in his house by the time he walked in, yet he did not expect to find Goldust in his living room, golden figure splashed on his sofa in the most comfortable way.

He was so stunned he didn't find a way to react. Paul wasn't there. He was the one who did the work, the one who told him what to do, and he would obey.

Paul hated Goldust. To him, he was nothing but an eccentric freak looking for some men to lure.

Undertaker wasn't sure about that. They had spoken before. Goldust was not an evil man. He was simply too much for him. Too much color, too much conversation, too much hedonism.

He could just take him by his long, swan neck and break it, leave him dead on the dark ground of his room. Goldust was a big, strong man, but Undertaker was stronger. He was no human, after all.

However, he was no monster, either. He was nothing everyone thought of him, so he decided to step into the living room, boots creaking under the old, weak wooden floor.

"I brought you some fruit" Goldust told the other, while slipping a grape in his own lips, savouring it. He was ready for the deadman to jump at his throat at any given moment. He was soon to understand that the Undertaker was not as predictable as he seemed, because he did not move a finger towards him. He did not burst out in anger. He sat stiffly on a little armchair, in front of him, and stared.

"I do not need to eat."

Goldust ate another grape, a sly smile on his painted lips. "That does not mean you are incapable of doing it, or does it?"

He knew about Taker's little secret. At first, he thought he was fucking with him just like he did with his audience, making him believe he was actually dead or something like that.

That was until they had their first private moments, after months of Goldust trying to get into the other man's skin to get him close to him. He was touching his chest, adjusting his tie, his shirt, finding any excuse to feel him up, since it was basically impossible to get any clothes off of him, when he discovered that all the rumors were true. His heart was skipping beats. Too many beats… in fact, it was not beating at all.

"I came here to apologize." Goldust broke the sudden silence, looking right at the other for the first time since they had seen each other. "I should have not disrespected you. I was shocked, and that is no excuse for what i did."

He stormed off. As soon as he found out his date was really undead, he was so shocked and scared he ran away from him. Like he was some kind of monster.

"You did what everyone would do." Undertaker was not even looking at him, finding better enjoyment in checking the level of dust on the table beside him.

"Except I know you're no monster."

There was a certainty about those words that made the deadman believe them. Goldust was telling the truth, or at least he really thought what he was saying was true.

He couldn't see him as a monster, he couldn't see him as a freak, because that would mean he would be a freak himself.

They were both strange, they were both feared because they were different, in their own ways. Monsters were unknown, a vague concept of something evil and unrelatable. Undertaker was pretty much there, beating heart or not, and he was the first creature Goldust had ever related to. He was no monster, he was a misunderstood, lonely pretty little thing.

"You are forgiven. You may go, now."

"You have so many books, I never took you as a reader." Goldust was walking through the whole room, attracted by the old, dusty books filling up almost every inch of the place.

After apologizing, he did not leave, and was wandering around, talking about everything and nothing at all, his questions being left unanswered by a silent Undertaker, still sitting on that armchair like he was being held at gunpoint.

The blonde man pulled out a book with a little laugh and threw himself on the couch again. He even brought wine, and forced Taker to take a glass. It was still in his hand, left untouched.

"Oh, you've read this one! It's full of notes. You have such a delightful handwriting, by the way."

He was finding out some really interesting things about the deadman, that day. Like the fact that he had a shelf full of erotic novels like the one he was checking on the sofa.

"Come here, my darling. Come next to me." If he was someone else, he would never dare to call him like that. However, he was no stranger to what the bigger man liked. Praise was something he never expected Undertaker to enjoy, yet everytime he called him lovingly, the big, dark man would turn softer.

He heard a little grunt come from the other side, and giggled softly as he felt his weight on the sofa, right next to him.

"Good." He praised him, and he gently brought the still full glass of wine to his pale lips. "Now indulge."

Undertaker didn't need to drink. He had lost all his mortal needs after his death. He didn't even know if he was still able to get drunk or to enjoy alcohol. It was all new to him, and it was because of Goldust that he was having his first human experiences after so much time.

He had never kissed someone before Goldust. He had never been attracted to anyone before him. He made him feel for the first time, he made him experience human touch and intimacy after years of being cold.

He took a sip of wine, to the other's delight. A grape was brought on his lips by the other man, who was looking at him so lovingly under those long lashes, and he could not refuse, savoring, letting his body feel again. It tasted sweet in his mouth, filled him with a strange enjoyment he never thought he could achieve by eating some fruit and drinking wine. Yet there he was, letting another man feed him grape and sipping on wine.

It was one of those rare moments when Goldust could see the man who was hiding behind that cold, dark persona. He couldn't get enough of him trying new things, of the expressions he made when he found out he liked them.

So close to him, he could see the freckles on his nose, the red roots of his dark hair, his wine stained, glossy lips. He had those piercing green eyes that captivated him.

"You are gorgeous." He lifted up the other's chin a bit to get a good look at his face. Undertaker was everything Goldust loved in a man. He was masculine, he was strong and he was dangerous. He was mysterious, unapproachable, he was a challenge worth taking.

His adulation was left unanswered, his pale date wrapping his lips around another grape, eating it out of Goldust's fingers. It was alluring how he didn't know how much power his beauty had on others.

"No words would suffice to describe how erotic you look, right now, eating out of my hands, getting drunk on wine and vice."

"I am no hedonist." Tone darker, his words sounded like an accusation, that Goldust took with a smile. He was a vicious man, he couldn't deny that statement.

Undertaker's lips curved into a knowing smile. "You have gotten too comfortable snooping around my belongings."

"Oh, my darling, I'm so glad I have. Or else, how could I have known you were such a degenerate?"

"Sounds like self-projection, to me."

"So we're getting cocky, deadman?"

As much as he was enjoying that playful bickering, Goldust was starting to warm up. His date was dangerously close to him, chest pressing against his shoulder as he spoke to him, hand reaching on his lap to put away the book.

"I have learned a lot about this one, actually."

"Oh, I beg you to tell me about it." His voice was low with desire as he spoke, hoping the deadman would get the innuendo.

The book was put on the table, a now free, gloved hand having access to Goldust's thighs. He felt it make its way under his robe, caress his legs so invitingly, the man opened his thighs, leaving space for his lover to take over.

Undertaker was looking at him with piercing, green eyes as he started to stroke him in between his legs, pushing his palm on that clothed, growing erection.
