The Affordable Connectivity Program has been a critical lifeline for millions of Americans, providing essential access to high-speed internet. This program has enabled students to continue their education remotely, allowed adults to work from home, facilitated tele-health services, and ensured that individuals remain connected to their loved ones during challenging times. As the expiration date of the ACP approaches, I am deeply concerned about the potential loss of these vital services for those who need them the most. The expiration of this program would disproportionately impact low-income households, exacerbate the digital divide, and hinder our nation's progress towards ensuring universal access to high-speed internet. Therefore, I strongly urge Congress to act swiftly and renew the Affordable Connectivity Program. This renewal is not just a matter of maintaining the status quo but a step forward in building a more connected, inclusive, and equitable society. By renewing this program, Congress will demonstrate its commitment to bridging the digital divide and supporting the ongoing needs of all Americans in the digital age. Thanks.

I'm truly at a loss for words for how genuinely happy this makes me. The number of videos I see in the Instagram timeline demanding users turn the sound on, is exponential. I'm sure many comments have been made in celeb videos calling out the discrimination this poses towards the deaf and hearing impaired community. This is the first I've seen where an actor has taken a comment to heart and made such a moving apology. Bethune House Migrant Women’s Refuge is a home away from home for women migrant workers in distress seeking justice.

Rainlily is a non-government charitable organisation that works to raise awareness of sexual violence against women and promotes a gender equal environment.

Tung Wah Group of Hospitals CEASE Crisis Centre provides crisis intervention and support which aims to serve victims of sexual violence and individuals/families encountering domestic violence or other family crises.

Harmony House is a one-stop anti-domestic violence service agency, with a wide range of preventive, therapeutic and developmental programmes to help families affected by domestic violence.

Rainlily Covid Joint Statement

“Between January and March, Harmony House had a 25% increase in the use of its hotline to report instances of domestic violence. In April, their shelters marked the highest number of occupants this year. One fourth of their occupants over the past year identify as ethnic minorities. RainLily reported a 30% rise in sexual violence hotline use in March. Increased stress levels, being forced to spend prolonged periods with their perpetrators, and limited access to support services all contribute to the increased vulnerabilities victims face. This phenomenon mirrors the situation in other parts of the world from Europe to the Americas. In Asia, Malaysia reported a 50% increase in calls to its domestic violence hotlines and frontline organisations in Mainland China reported three times as many domestic violence-related inquiries than before quarantines were in place.”

“With the increased use of hotlines, greater publicity is needed to provide information about social service hotlines and available support services in multiple languages to ensure universal accessibility. This information can empower and provide support to those at risk of domestic and sexual violence.”

This railing in Naples has Braille to describe the view. What do you think? Sitting atop a hill that overlooks the Italian city of Naples is the Castel Sant’Elmo (St Elmo Castle) which is a popular tourist haunt. Hundreds walk up to the top of the castle to enjoy the view but there is yet another attraction on display in the castle. A 92-foot-long piece of stainless steel is attached to the wall fence of the castle of one of its large sized windows and it has a poetic description of the view in Braille. The unique railing was installed by artist Paolo Puddu in 2015 and titled ‘Follow the Shape’ and has been a permanent fixture at the castle since 2017, a report on Ozy.com said. The art had won the fifth edition of the ‘A Work For the Castle’ contest. Visitors are encouraged to feel the installation wherein they run their hands on the rail and those who can read the Braille script can ‘follow the shape’ on the railing to read the verses from Italian author Giuseppe de Lorenzo’s ‘La terra e l’uomo’ or the ‘The Land and the Man’. The inscription is carved in both Italian and English and tourists are asked to imagine the stunning view in front of them.
