“What are you going to do now ?” Jing Yuan finally asked, while Jiyi had gone to curl up in his armchair, absent-mindedly playing with his elaborate hairpin.

“Retire and devote myself to writing, I think,” mused the poet with a distant look. "And... I'm thinking of returning to the Fanghu."

This news, more than that of his retirement, made Jing Yuan's heart sink. "You're going to leave ?"

Jiyi turned towards him, eyes weary and lips in a tight smile but unable to hide their quivering. “I can't... I can't stay, Jing Yuan. Not after all of that,” he confessed under his breath, his gaze falling on the pin in his hands. “Not after him.”

Him. 

Yingxing.

“You loved him too, didn’t you ?” he muttered in realization, late, too late. 

Jiyi laughed in response, a soft and lovely sound like bells or wind chimes, joyful despite his sadness, affectionate despite his sorrow. “Yes Yuan-er, I loved him. Not like you or Yinyue loved him, but A-Xing was….”

He left the sentence hanging, his gaze lost in the distance as the hairpin dug into the fat of his palm, his grip suddenly tightening before he released it with a small breath of laughter that sounded hollow.

“We, Vidyadhara, are tragic creatures for whom love is both the greatest strength and the greatest sin. There's a reason our greatest songs are elegies, Yuan-er.”

The Vidyadhara looked at him with a half-lidded gaze, the pale green of his eyes almost emerald in the semi-darkness of the dying day. Jing Yuan felt himself shuddering with unease at the intensity of his gaze, having always felt deeply uncomfortable when Jiyi dropped his cheerful persona to reveal the hidden and severe depths of his psyche, the exact thing that had made him one of the finest poets of their generation.

“Take care of Dan Feng, Jing Yuan. Because if I can only offer immortality to Yingxing through my works, our dear High Elder and all his following incarnations will never escape the memory of this love bigger than themselves.”

Kafka wasn't even sure what had left her lips, mind filled with static and Spirit Whisper singing under her breath as she reached out, grabbed and seized, deaf to the prayer-like moan that escaped from Jing Yuan’s tempting mouth. She barely felt how the ridges of Jing Yuan's armor dug into the relief of her spine as the woman collapsed, whole body seized with a tremolo-like tremor. 

With quivering eyes hidden behind closed eyelids, Kafka let herself be carried away by Jing Yuan’s melody, losing herself in the most delicate nuances of the tonal color, in the cadence of the notes, in the phrases and motifs and bridges, tasting the notes on her tongue and feeling the emotion rise, ascend, climax.

She opened her eyes with a trembling breath, her mind saturated with something incredible, inconceivable, exhilarating. It was a matter of an instant for Kafka to reverse their positions, pressing a limp-bodied Jing Yuan against the wall, pulling that marvelous thick hair with a firm hand to reveal the curve of a pale neck. The marks left by her rouge almost looked like wounds in the semi-darkness, as she worshiped that swan-like throat with feathery kisses, feeling the slightest quiver of suppressed moans beneath her mouth.

Elio was a composer, Kafka his conductor and Ren would be one of their joint masterpieces. 

But Jing Yuan ? 

Jing Yuan was a magnum opus.

Jing Yuan's spirit sang an angel's choir in the embrace of her Spirit Whisper, soft and malleable and delicate in all its strength. Not the slightest trace of resistance, not the slightest surrender either. 

An offering, on a platter, all for her to grasp, all for her to devour.

All for her to ruin, all for her to destroy.

All for her to sublimate, to rebuild, to elevate.

Jing Yuan was a magnum opus and Kafka wanted to make her sing.

Jing Yuan woke up to the heat, stifling and all-encompassing.

He woke up to the heavy weight of a body above him, fingers intertwined in his, a tight and almost painful grip, claw-like nails digging behind his knuckles, almost to the point of drawing blood. A gesture of possessive affection, which looked almost more like shackles, almost more like trammels.   He woke up to lips pressed against his, wet and soft and greedy, determined to steal the very breath from his lungs. Teeth nibbling his lower lip teasingly and small, trembling breaths like sighs, like sobs, like prayers.

He woke up to the iron smell of old blood and the bitter smell of the ashes of an ancient age, surrounded by the warmer scent of coumarin and embers, of flowering lotuses and sea air and a past broken into pieces, like a mirror dropped to the ground in an excess of passion.

(And it was wrong, it was wrong, wrong, wrong and Jing Yuan should push him away, should stop him, he should—)

Jing Yuan woke up and whatever common sense begged him to do, he did nothing of it.

The "shoulds" died in the hollow of his throat, along with all the unspoken words that had died there over the decades, with all the feelings suppressed and twisted to be more acceptable, more correct, more presentable. Where he had buried greed to let only affection through, where he had decapitated anger to accept only annoyance, where he had stifled longing to leave only the barest shadow of the desire. 

(Where he had swallowed romance, with the gluttony and despair of a starving man, until he choked on it and gave himself indigestion, accepting on his tongue only the softer and quieter forms of platonic friendship and care.)

Jing Yuan woke up with the fatigue of a world resting on his shoulders and selfishly stopped fighting. Yielded, like a flower bowing its head to the rain, like a cloud driven by the wind, like a cliff eroded by the waves. Let the armor fall to the ground with a crash, let the walls collapse to the ground, let the glass shatter. 

(But did he let himself be caught, or was he the one who seized, plundered, ransacked ?)

About weeding/pruning in libraries

Oh, I remember doing this one on my old blog, but might as well do it again.

So, when I have to do a mental calculation, what happen is :

I see 27 on the left and 48 on the right, in front of me, floating

27 separate in 20 and 7 while 48 separate in 40 and 8

20 and 40 merges together to make 60, floating in the middle, low

7 separate in 5 and 2 on the left. 8 separate in 5 and 3 on the right. However, they separate as points in the space.

I have two 5 as dice face five, a 2 as dice face two and a 3... as not dice face three (the points aren't aligned diagonally but like as the upper two and the bottom left one).

The two 5 merges and make 10, the 2 and 3 merges and makes 5

Funniest thing as someone threading some-fucking-where on the AroAce spectrum was to learn how to write romance.

Because like, I might be like "Meh" when it comes to my involvement in it, but I can somehow see what the whole deal with it is for others. I don't feel much about romance when it's supposed to be about me myself and I BUT I like the idea of romance, especially about other people and EVEN MORE about fictional people.

My understanding of it might be really skewed tho, hence why I. Erh. Studied it, I guess. And as funny as it sounds in retrospect, women magazines I owe you a lot in that aspect.

Little anecdote time since it's my scheduled break or librarianship-thesis-doom-writing-deadline-is-close lmao.

Okay, so when you work as a librarian, the "I'm so sorry for the book, I know it's late, I'm sorry" is actually quite frequent. Older patrons tends to freak out more about being late, even if it's only one-two days and every time I have to tell that it's okay, the worst thing that can happen is their loan card will be blocked at the automaton and even if it happens, if the document is late of less than one week, the librarian can overstep the block to allow loan. We are generally quite lenient on this, as long as the late document is not a document reserved/booked (ah! book pun) and therefore expected by another patron.

We stopped giving fines for late returns a long time ago in the library were I work now. Instead, you'll get three notices of "this document is late, please return it". The first one is sent one month after the original due date, the second another month after and the third one, two weeks after the second one. And shortly after the third, you receive a tax stamp from public finances for a fixed amount to be paid in a tobacconist. But if you return your book before paying the stamp, it is canceled, because the stamp is basically "if you have not brought the book back, we consider that you have lost it so please give enough to buy it again".

Something that's funny sometimes is that books that were late or lost and whose status had been changed in the software sometimes reappear in surprising ways. Just last Tuesday, a patron wanted to borrow a comic book and couldn't, and for good reason! According to the software, this comic had been "lost" almost two months ago.

Another funny thing that happened to me in the first library I worked at was a retired university professor who was weeding his personal library in preparation for moving out... who found a book that was overdue of a year and a half ! He had accidentally placed it among his own collection and apparently never received any calls or mail of the library. He brought it back to us with a little note of apology held on a paper clip and he was so very sorry. A really sweet man, we had a nice conversation about said book while my manager took care of the situation (I was only in internship and it was my first "well it happens sometimes" situation).

Another funny one is from when I worked in my university library, where students are a bit... lax about due date lmao. A teacher needed a really specific book for a lecture to come but it was in loan in another campus on the other side of the country (we sent it after we got a demand for it) and late. Happily for him, a student who was getting is books loaned said he had one at home and if the teacher wanted, they could go fetch it after their afternoon class. It was a really sweet interaction and a funny one too, cause they were not in the same field of study !

forgive me library enthusiast for I have sinned. I have not confessed before. It’s been almost two months since I got the final notice to return my library books and I keep forgetting.

I am not here to shame you and neither are librarians! These things happen! Its okay!

Last thing I searched for writing purpose : Color blindness ! There is actually three types of color blindness, the most common ones being Deuteranopia (can't see green) and Protanopia (can't see red), which causes the world to be seen in tints of yellowish-brown except for blue. But there is also Tritanopia (can't see blue), or your vision is a strange mix of cyan and magenta ! It was really interesting.

This might be a long shot, but I'm wondering if you or anyone else here knows any good resources about the daily lives, work and roles of British victorian librarians? To be more specific, late-1800s London librarians and libraries?

Stuff like how libraries were maintained, how and what kind of books were acquired, how lending worked, accessibility for the poor vs rich/middle class, the daily responsibilities of a librarian, etc.

For context, I'm writing a comic and want to be as historically accurate as possible, but I have a really hard time finding any research material for this for some reason ^^;
