With Birthdaygate pretty much confirmed, here are two moments from 4x02 Vecna's Curse that hit different...
(1) First we have Jonathan stopping Will as he goes into Rink-O-Mania to tell him something. Will turns around quickly and almost looks, dare I say, hopeful?
But why would that be the case? Unless of course there's something Will's waiting for Jonathan to say, that he hasn't said yet? Happy Birthday perhaps? Surprise Will! We didn't forget your birthday! We're coming in! We have a party planned and everything! Meet you inside! (interesting that there were birthday decorations in there as well...)
Unfortunately, all Jonathan does is tell Will that they'll be back to pick them up at 6:00. And so Will goes from sad, to hopeful, only to go back to looking sad again...
I think a lot of fans attributed Jonathan's concerned looks in this moment as him knowing about Will's feelings for Mike. And I do still think that's present, especially as he's telling Will they'll be there to pick them up later. In that specific moment he sounds sympathetic like Sorry buddy, that sucks.
However, the look Jonathan makes after Will turns away, as Argyle starts driving off, doesn't look like sympathy or pity from someone witnessing unrequited love. It looks like confusion and almost deja vu being experienced by Jonathan himself. As if he's forgetting something, but doesn't know what it is...
(2) Next is at the very end of Will and Mike's fight. Mike sort of echoes the same level of frustration he had during their rain fight, when he said It's not my fault you don't like girls. We know the scenes parallel each other, and how after both of those things are said, there's this silence that takes over, making clear that this is as far as they can go, otherwise they might risk hurting each other beyond fixing. We see both of them make faces of deep emotion here, because they probably are also being reminded of their fight last summer.
And so Will's options here were to, either (A) take it even further and risk hurting Mike more than he's hurting him, or (B) just don't say anything and let the argument end there before it gets beyond repair.
But the thing is, it almost looked like Will was going to say something. He quite literally mouths the word But-- only to cut himself off all together, looking defeated.
Here's what I think. THIS would have been the perfect moment for Will to say, But, you forgot my birthday, Mike. If it was genuinely something as simple as Mike and everyone simply forgetting and needing a reminder, without any supernatural implications involved, I think this would have been the moment to do it.
It would have also mirrored their rain fight even better because it would have been Will saying something and likely walking away, leading to Mike being like OH SHIT I have to fix this! I messed up.
But we all know it's not that simple.
As far as Will knowns, EVERYONE forgot his birthday, not just Mike. And so him calling out Mike here, might have felt slightly unjustified in that it wasn't just him who forgot.
It's almost like they're not the problem here, he is. (WILL POV ANGST)
That's what truly makes the scenes at Rink-O-Mania so heartbreaking. Because it wasn't just about Mike and El ignoring him, it was the fact that it was his literal birthday. All the most important people in his life, who used the literal memory of his birthday to bring him back bc they cared about him so much in the past, have now apparently forgot about him in the present.
Not to mention, the story not blatantly acknowledging his birthday being forgotten in the narrative of s4, means that it was framed this way bc the whole point was they only wanted it to be hinted at in s4, saving it as a surprise revelation in s5.
And so, if Will did say here, but Mike, you forgot my birthday, how would that have impacted the conflict in s4 and Vecna's plan as a whole, specifically for Will? All it would have taken was them connecting the dots after that, figuring out Vecna's plan before he could even reach Will, rendering s5 plotless?...
S5 is likely going to jump right into this, there's too much incriminating evidence about unused footage at the Rink-O-Mania location. It also fits with them not mentioning it in s4 if it's intended to be an early s5 revelation.
TBH with all the storylines going on in s4, them exploring the depths of Will's connection to Vecna just wasn't an option, bc they wouldn't have been able to do it justice. He needs to be front and center for that.
They're clearly saving the best for last...

So I made another thing…an experimental “fan edit” of my favorite film of all time, trying my best (with what we actually have available) to reincorporate excised scenes, songs, and underscoring, oh my! Do please check it out and let me know what you think! Link to download and full list of “what’s new” below. xxtyler
https://mega.nz/file/UAozkLJT?fs=e&s=cl#990wYePA3q1RIEcAVkMaF9inPpx_9402HDC1E7zk-h4
So what’s so “new” about this edit?
* Quick “redux” subtitle added to opening logo, from the font created to resemble that as seen in the original editions of L. Frank Baum’s source novel ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’
* Extended underscoring for Dorothy’s opening scene, running home from her encounter with Miss Gulch
* Underscoring outtake reinstated for our first meeting of the farmhands
* Extended underscoring for Miss Gulch’s confrontation with the Gale family
* Unused musical coda reinstated for Dorothy leaving Professor Marvel
* Cyclone sequence extended at beginning with full musical arrangement and looped tornado sound effects from earlier in the scene, with tornado test footage of the Gale farmhouse engulfed in a huge cloud of smoke before the ascent
* Alternate musical tag used for Glinda’s first appearance
* Alternate version of “As Mayor of the Munchkin City” in which the lines are sung instead of spoken as in the final film
* Quick alternate shot of the Lullaby League’s entrance from the 1949/1970 reissue trailer
* Original complete version of “If I Only Had a Brain” with Ray Bolger’s amazing dance routine, the only actual surviving film sequence excised from the final film; audio mixed down to mono from stereo
* Unused intro reinstated into score before first duet version of “We’re Off to See the Wizard”
* Extended underscoring for sequence of encounter with the talking apple trees
* Unused intro reinstated into score before “If I Only Had a Heart”
* Extended scoring reinstated for dialogue before trio version of “We’re Off to See the Wizard”
* Underscoring outtake reinstated for Cowardly Lion’s “confession” leading into “If I Only Had the Nerve”
* Alternate shot from 1949/1970 reissue trailer for end of quartet version of “We’re Off to See the Wizard”
* Alternate “heavenly choir” vocal arrangement of scoring mixed in when the group first sees the Emerald City beyond the poppy field
* Alternate shot of group running through the poppy field from 1949/1970 reissue trailer
* Alternate vocal arrangement integrated for final verse of “Optimistic Voices”
* Extended underscoring for encounter with the Guardian of the Gate
* “The Jitterbug” deleted musical sequence reinstated with extended underscoring, production stills, and montage created circa 1989 from stills and Harold Arlen’s home movies, including rarely seen closeups of Jack Haley and Bert Lahr in the second half which have never been seen on any home video release but can be quickly seen in this 1983 television special: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axFK4Ku2PRs
* Extended underscoring for the Winged Monkeys’ attack
* Deleted reprise of “Over the Rainbow” reinstated using montage of production stills from Warner Bros. home video releases and audio amalgam as found on the 1995 deluxe edition soundtrack
* Deleted “Ding Dong! Emerald City” reinstated using montage of stills from Warner Bros. home video releases plus very short shots of actual footage from both the 1949 and 1970 reissue trailers
* Extended “Delirious Escape” ending re-created with extended underscoring and following the shooting script for reference as to which flashback overlays appear (as best as I could do with what ended up being available in the final film)
* Short “redux” credits at end with alternate version of “End Title” music from 1995 deluxe edition soundtrack

Additionally, the spacious nature of villas allows for versatile usage, such as transforming unused spaces into home offices or entertainment areas. This adaptability enhances the property's appeal and potential resale value.
Moreover, the appeal of villas is not restricted to a specific demographic. Families, retirees, and high-net-worth individuals alike are drawn to the unique charm and lifestyle offered by villas. This diverse demand can contribute to the property's long-term investment value, making it an attractive option for those considering real estate as a sound financial investment.
Tailored Living Spaces
Villas for sale are not just properties; they are canvases awaiting personalization. The expansive interiors provide ample room for customization, enabling residents to bring their vision of luxury to life. From custom kitchens outfitted with state-of-the-art appliances to home gyms and entertainment spaces, the versatility of villas allows homeowners to tailor their living spaces to match their individual tastes and preferences.
The opportunity to create a bespoke living environment is particularly appealing for those who view their home as an extension of their personality. Whether it's a grand entrance foyer, a private wine cellar, or a landscaped courtyard, villas for sale offer a blank canvas for homeowners to craft their ideal living spaces, adding a unique touch to their everyday life.
A Lasting Legacy
Investing in a villa goes beyond acquiring a property; it's about securing a legacy. The grandeur and timeless appeal of villas make them not just homes but family estates, capable of transcending generations. The architectural significance, combined with the exclusivity of villa living, ensures that these properties stand as enduring symbols of prestige and success.

Back in 1995, the French videogame company Microfolie, now long defunct, published a didactic game/virtual encyclopedia dedicated to the evolution of life in prehistoric oceans -- the kind of virtual encyclopedia that was popular at the time, I suppose, but now seems to be tragically obsolete. (Perhaps those who grew up in English-speaking countries will remember the Eyewitness CD series? I had the one on dinosaurs.)
Its title was L'Océan des Origines. It was quite an ambitious project: data on hundreds of animal species scattered over 500 million years of Earth's history, geographical and climatic changes over nine geological periods, compared anatomy, paleontology, scientific etymology, phylogenetics... presented as the rooms of a magnificent undersea palace or museum. You get to watch giant cephalopods and primitive tetrapods swim by over triumphant orchestral music, free a precious fossil from stone by choosing the right reagents, follow the branches of the tree of life across half a billion years of change, and come up with appropriate scientific names for creatures of fantasy.
I was gifted a copy of the Italian edition when I was a little grub. I fell in love with it. Decades later, I could still literally recite much of its content by heart. You know how people get starry-eyed about the cartoons they watched in the morning before school? I feel that way about crude animations of trilobites and plesiosaurs. By modern standards, or looking at it with adult eyes, I suppose it's not so impressive, but whatever. Eventually entropy and hardware marched on, and the original CD became unusable. But guess what -- by running Windows 95 on a virtual machine, you can still get it going!
If you have the original CD, that is, which I thankfully do. Alas, the game itself has been completely out of production for over two decades. CD resales are all inactive, the production companies have long since closed their gates. But I really would like this little gem to be more famous, as I think it deserves. So, I've taken as much footage as I could of the running game (hey, it disappeared from circulation before the current millennium -- I don't think I'm depriving anyone from potential sales doing so. What sales??) And since all the content is in Italian, I've taken the liberty of subbing/translating everything into English for everyone’s convenience.
The whole footage is about 2 hours, split up in eight parts. Here is the first, covering the introduction, the game's internal books and the first of its properly interactive sequences, in which you apply your new knowledge of etymology to name three species from an imaginary alt-prehistory.
More to follow.

[PREVIOUS PART]
Part 2 of explaining the Haunting Ground iceberg - click below to read further...
Tier 5
Ngl, this tier is where I slowly start running out of ideas.
Fiona runs faster on a Japanese copy: I was really curious about this so I even tried comparing the different region versions. I wasn't too sure but some HG speedrunners claimed this to be true.
Purpose of the 'glowing sun, radiant star, luminescent moonlight': Now the lore behind this puzzle is truly a head-scratcher. I believe the luminescent moonlight refers to the optional puzzle where you make a luminessant light up a lamp to get the film reel. Perhaps the glowing sun refers to the dragons and the fire is radiant? I really wonder what this all meant in the long run.
Aureolus Fiona Belli: Fiona is the descendent of Aureolus Belli, but she only acknowledges this after you fully complete the game. Access the secret room and she makes the following comment: "My quest is now complete. I leave the entirety of my legacy in this room. Aureolus Fiona Belli."
The House of Truth is directly connected to the castle despite being far away: After exiting the castle through the mansion you can spot the water tower in the distance in the Chaos forest. In ending A, B and C Fiona is already at the castle gate right after leaving the House Of Truth. There is no way that Fiona could have made her way to the castle by foot - then again, Hewie ran all the way to the water tower even with an injured paw. (⌯˃̶᷄﹏˂̶᷄⌯)
The figurative meaning of Acta Est Fabula: The game over screen displays the latin phrase "Acta Est Fabula" which roughly translates to "The play is over". Honestly, I feel like it makes the most sense during Debilitas' level as he sees Fiona as a doll. What do you guys make of this phrase?
Tier 6
Hacked mods: I wasn't aware that HG could be hacked in different ways considering it's an old console game. I've already seen the different camera angles, but I recently found out about a Youtube channel who's been able to swap the character models. For example, they had Young Lorenzo appear in the old mansion and Lord of Fire in the castle.
You have CONTINUED: There are plenty of cut/unused assets from Haunting Ground such as this so called continue coin. The item description is pretty eerie: "You have CONTINUED".
Stalker clock: 'Pursuit clock' is more accurate. The game doesn't explain how the stalkers can appear except for a guide excerpt a lovely follower sent me. Stay tuned for a post where I will go into detail about the stalker mechanism!
Riccardo closes doors: The reason this is so far down is because most people talk about Daniella closing doors (to prevent Fiona and Hewie from escaping). It turns out Riccardo also closes doors in the old mansion, but it doesn't happen so often unlike Daniella's behavior.
Un aethera vos picta: This is one of Young Lorenzo's kinda rare lines, the full line being: "You cannot resist me Fiona... un aethera vos picta." It's supposed to be latin but seems to be mistranslated/mispronounced.
Daniella screams at her reflection because she sees herself as bald: One of her in-game animations include admiring her reflection in her glass shard weapon. If you enter the Secret Room and view that animation from a certain angle her hair disappears.
"It's time to change your clothes miss": An unused line by Daniella. I'll bet she was meant to say this when she first meets Fiona but when? It sounds like an in-game/gameplay line. Maybe she wasn't supposed to disappear after the first cutscene.
Tier 7
Fiona's clothes were originally meant to tear as the game progressed: No behind-the-scenes interview/footage states this but judging by the concept art, this is true.
Fiona is a homunculus: Sure, the game establishes that Fiona is a human but she must be half-homunculus considering her father was one.
Capcom will never remake or re-release Haunting Ground because of the heavily implied sexual themes: I take it back.
And there you have it! I hope this cleared any confusion. If anything my ask box is always open. ✧_✧

okay so, in that last gifset instead of the troll Aragorn fights, they were originally i believe intending to have Sauron appear wreathed in light as Annatar briefly before shifting himself into an armoured form to fight Aragorn ( something they actually filmed and you can find in the deleted/unused scenes, hence why they still all squint like the light is still there when the black gate opens in the movie ). but instead they decided not to go with that idea and edited in the troll over some of the Sauron choreography/footage.
but BUT, that means originally Legolas sees Aragorn getting an absolute beatdown by Sauron...and this lone elf starts fighting/shouldering his way across the battlefield toward him with the intentions of throwing himself at the 9 foot armoured maiar...and that is still the funniest and most badass image to think about. Legolas just out there having the biggest balls in all of Arda

Catch Me If You Can (3/?)
Tumblr media
298 days. That’s how long Killian Jones was away from a baseball field. It’s less than a year, only part of a season for him, but it might as well have lasted a decade as he alternated between physical therapy and spending an excessive amount of time sitting on his couch.
But then he came back and won the World Series.
It’s something no one saw coming, and it’s certainly not something anyone who knows about his arm would predict. Now it’s a new season with new possibilities, and anything could happen. On-field reporter Emma Swan will be there to cover it all even if she is not his biggest fan right now.
Asking her out live on-air will do that.
Rating: Mature
A/N: Shoutout to my spectacular beta @resident-of-storybrooke 🧡 I’m the worst writer and send her multiple chapters at a time instead of just the one, and she gets things back to me in record time!
We get some background information on Emma in this chapter to further set up the story, and I thank you for reading! I’m really, really excited about a lot of the things I have planned for this story!
I promise they interact in all chapters after this

“What are you getting David for his birthday?”
Emma looks to her right where Ruby is stretched out on her yoga mat, doing a stretch that definitely isn’t anything that’s taught in a certified class. She can’t tell if she’s gotten stuck that way or if she’s simply given up on getting some early morning exercise. They really have to start going back to spin class sometime soon. Maybe tomorrow.
“I bought him some new dress shirts.”
“That’s boring.”
“Have you not gotten him anything, Rubes?” She swipes her blush against her cheek waiting for Ruby to answer. She doesn’t. “The party is tonight. You know that, right? And we’re about to be at work all day editing.”
“Why do you think I’m asking so that I have time to get Graham to go get something on his lunch break?”
“You have no shame.”
Ruby falls onto her mat, star fishing out on the floor before propping herself up on her elbows, her bun coming undone so that it hangs messily on her shoulders. “I know. So, what should I buy him? He’s turning forty. Is he having a midlife crisis? Should I get him some hair dye?”
“Only if you want to be murdered.”
Ruby grunts before rising from her mat and stretching out. “Eh, it might be worth it. I think I’ll just get him a Shake Shack gift card. I’m not his sister. I can get away with a semi-shitty gift.”
She chuckles as she grabs her brush for her bronzer and runs it across her cheekbone, blending it in. “It’s not semi-shitty if he takes us to lunch with it.”
“True. Alright,” Ruby claps, picking her mat up, “I’m going to go shower, and then we can go to work. Ten minutes tops.”
It’s twenty minutes, which is actually less time than Emma was expecting, before she and Ruby walk out of their apartment, walking the three blocks to their train station and swiping their metro cards to get through the gate so they can take the ten-minute ride to the studios. They rarely have to go into the actual offices before ten. The only time they have to be at work earlier than that is when there’s an early game and they have to make their way across Manhattan to get to the fields. That’s a bit of a bigger commute. But this morning the weather is relatively nice, the trains aren’t crowded or full of people in T-rex costumes, and she and Ruby get to the office and through security before they have to be there.
She leaves Ruby on the seventh floor before going up to the tenth to the editing room, her eyes having to adjust from the brightness outside to the dim lights inside the room that’s really only lit by screens.
“Anton, how the hell do you live in the sunlight after staying in here all day?”
Anton twists in his chair to look at her before turning back to the screen that he’s working on, clicking on a few keys as he speaks. “It’s only dark right now because I’m trying to get the lighting right on this edit. Something is wrong with the shadows. Get Ash to set you up. You’ve got over eight hours of footage to go through, so this probably isn’t going to get finished today.”
“He’s only talking in about an hour and a half of that.”
“Yeah, but you’ve got to get the filler and then your notes. It’s a whole thing when you have a big segment like this. You’ll get used to it.”
She nods even though Anton isn’t paying any attention to her, before stepping into the room and around some of the editors she’s never worked with until she’s sitting down at Ashley’s workstation, picking up the pair of headphones that she uses and rolling up to the screen as she watches Ashely piece together several clips to promote whatever tennis tournament is going on right now. She thinks it’s the one in Palm Springs, but she hasn’t really been able to keep up with things lately.
“Sorry about that,” Ashley apologizes, flashing her a smile. “Alexandria had a late night last night, and I didn’t get into work in time to finish this up until you got here. But now my attention is all yours.”
“Is she okay?”
“Yeah, yeah. She’s teething is all. It’s miserable for all of us.”
“I bet. I remember when Leo was teething. David aged about fifteen years.”
“That doesn’t make me feel better.”
“Sorry, sorry,” she laughs, patting Ashley’s arm. “I won’t tell you any other stories about miserable babies. Let’s talk the interview.”
Ashley nods and clicks around on her computer until she’s pulling up Emma’s file, all of the hours of footage broken down. Emma has a basic understanding of how all of this works, but it’s mostly above her knowledge and paygrade. That’s why she’s glad to have people like Ashley and Anton, especially when they can easily throw out shaky or unusable footage to narrow things down even more. She tells Ashley that she wants to work on the main interview first, to make sure she can show all of the pieces she wants, and then they’ll work on finding the filler footage and the music to be played in the background. This is the first time Emma has ever worked on an edited segment that’s more than one minute, so it’s all a whole new world to her.
“This is good,” Ashley murmurs, her voice a small whisper outside of the headphones. “Like, really good. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him be this open before.”
“Jones? Jones is an open book.”
Her brows raise before settling back down at a regular height. “You are literally the most knowledgeable person on this subject in this building, and you think that Jones is an open book?”
“I mean, yeah. He’s baseball player, first and foremost. He’s young, hot, likes to spend his money and go out with every woman with big boobs and a pulse.”
Ashley actually laughs at that, rolling back in her chair before rewinding the video to a part where Killian is talking about his nieces and how they collect bobble heads, particularly his, and scatter them throughout their house for their parents to have to pick up. Emma remembers laughing at that, remembers thinking it’s sweet, but she’s not entirely sure why Ashley is showing it to her again.
“I know you probably hate him for asking you out like that, which was kind of a dick move, but anyone with eyes can tell he’s a sweet guy. I mean, he spent his injury break learning how to bake and sitting with his nieces so that they didn’t have to go to daycare. Yeah, he kind of had a period where he was pictured with a lot of girls, but that was when he was twenty-four and on top of the world. I mean, when you were twenty-four, you’re telling me you wouldn’t have been all over a pretty baseball player if you met him in a bar?”
“I hated all men at twenty-four.”
Ashely shakes her head from side to side, chuckling at her again. Emma hates to admit it, but Ashley is right. She knows that he’s not a bad guy, that’s not some sleazy player. No, he did not make the best decisions in asking her out last year, but in a move that surprised her, he very kindly apologized. And she really should not judge him over that time when he was pictured with girls all the time. For one, he probably dates as much as every other guy, but his dates happen to be publicized. She hates when women are shamed for dating, and here she is judging someone else.
His incessant flirting in all of his interviews and him asking her out have likely framed her view on him when she should know better than to judge by what appears on the surface.
She should also know better than to let a few pretty words make her trust someone.
“I met Sean at twenty-four.”
Emma sighs, curving her lips into a smile before patting Ashely’s arm. “And you two are wonderful. Let’s keep editing before we get distracted by you showing me a million baby pictures.”
“Dammit, Emma,” Anton groans from his seat, “the first rule of the editing room is that you don’t talk about baby pictures.”
After letting Ashley show her new pictures of Alexandra and those adorable chubby cheeks, they finally get around to some more editing, cutting questions that have repeated answers and editing out Emma’s laugh or weird coughing sounds so that she doesn’t look like a total maniac. There’s this part in the film where Killian is standing with his back to the camera and in front of a large set of windows that show off the field, and it looks like it could be a part of the Hall of Fame. It’s a gorgeous shot, and it’s where he’s talking about his hopes and dreams for baseball as well as wanting to get to live a normal life full of everything that his brother has.
Frankly, it’s beautiful enough to make her tear up.
They may just be her, though. As much as sports are about the statistics, about the executions, it’s also about the emotions. In the grand scheme of life, a baseball game doesn’t matter. These men getting paid millions of dollars to play a game don’t change the world. Except that they do. People live and die by the game, by the unpredictability, by the fact that it’s human beings out there pushing their bodies to limits that most people can’t reach. It takes everyone away from the world for a bit, lets them cheer for a happy ending, and even though the losses can be crushing, for just that little while, people feel hope.
Killian Jones coming back from injury, no matter how minor, to win the World Series, gave people hope.
It’s that thought process that guides her in helping Ashley and Anton edit the segment, and even though they only get about halfway through editing, they stop for the day so that Ashley can go home to her family and Anton to his while she walks down three flights of stairs to get to her office shoved into the corner of the corporate floor. There’s literally not even room in there for her to have an extra chair for someone to sit with her, but considering how little time she spends there now, that doesn’t matter. And it’s a step up from the cubicles.
Damn, her segment is going to be good.
This is…she knows she complained about it, and for the right reasons, but this is huge for her career. Right now, she’s more than happy doing post-game interviews and the occasional mid-game updates, but one day she might want to commentate or have her own show. One day she might want to move onto things other than sports. She’s getting ahead of herself, she knows. She simply can’t help it.
She’s excited, and she actually can’t wait to come into work tomorrow to get it all finished.
After sending a text to Ruby asking her if she’s almost ready to go, she logs into her computer and waits for her email to load, figuring she might as well get some more work done while she waits. Ruby’s timing at work is always so unpredictable when they’re not working together, so she has absolutely no idea when they’ll be able to leave to get on the train to Astoria. If only David was in the office today.
She doesn’t have much to sort through, just a few emails asking about the segment, another few talking about food that’s available in the office (she really hates that she missed those), and then another two from Walsh that she immediately deletes. They could be work related, but they’re most likely not.
Dating someone she works with was an absolutely horrible idea that she’ll probably never do again. Walsh is definitely an asshole, one that’s worse than all of the others, but he kind of ruined that workplace peace that she had for awhile. They’d both been stat checkers together, spent their days going blind reading spreadsheets and becoming friends, and when they both got promotions to journalists  (ones who actually got to write articles) at the same time, she was pretty sure that it was fate or something crazy like that. They got to have the same job, the same schedule, and she was in that phase of infatuation in a new relationship that it made her stomach constantly feel like it was in those pleasantly painful knots.
Then she interviewed and auditioned for the on-air job to work with the Yankees.
It’s a moment that’s changed her life in an immeasurable amount of ways, but the first and most obvious – before Killian Jones 2k18 – was that her boyfriend of over a year resented her. He resented her, belittled her for what she did for a living, and it all felt so painstakingly familiar that she had to break up with him before he damaged her beyond repair too.
The fact that he was cheating definitely helped that decision.
So for him to still work under one hundred feet away from her in the office and still send her emails on a regular basis is a pretty big sting.
There is no one who got more enjoyment out of her being asked out on live television than Walsh Osborne.
Ruby: I am in the bathroom curling my hair. Meet you by the seventh floor receptionist desk in ten.
Emma: Where did you get a curling iron?
Ruby: The makeup room in the studio.
Of course she did.
Closing out her computer and slipping her booties back on, she leaves her office and locks it up before making her way through the cubicles, specifically going out of her way to avoid Walsh’s desk since she knows he’s still in the office, and waits by the receptionist area with David’s present in her hand. There’s no one sitting there, all of the calls being forwarded through the machine, and she idly wonders where in the world Jacob is.
“We have got to get whatever curling iron it is they use in hair and makeup,” Ruby sighs as she walks into the room, heels that she was not wearing this morning now on her feet and her hair curled into perfectly styled waves. “Seriously, it’s fantastic.”
“It’s, like, over three hundred dollars.”
“We can split it. You ready to go? Graham is going to meet us there.”
“Does he have David’s present?”
“Yep.” Ruby loops her arm through Emma’s elbow, pulling her closer, before walking toward the elevators. “He wins the award for the best boyfriend today.”
“Who is he in competition with?”
“Your non-existent boyfriend.”
She pinches Ruby’s arm, but she doesn’t say anything as the elevator opens and they walk inside. It’s always such a pain to go to David and Mary Margaret’s townhome from the office, if only because of the amount of times they have to switch trains, but it gives she and Ruby time to talk about their days and scroll through their phone, checking up on everything that they’ve missed while working.
(She usually finds time to look while at work. Knowing what’s happening in baseball players’ lives is important to her job, right? It doesn’t make her creepy if they put it online.)
Plus, it’s a Friday afternoon, and that’s always the best time to see people dressed in odd costumes and eating full on turkeys on the subway.
Seriously. That happened once. It wasn’t even Thanksgiving.
By the time they get to the townhouse, it’s past six, and she can see cars parked up and down the street, Mary Margaret’s SUV sitting right in front of their home. She insists on driving everywhere, even when she comes into Manhattan, and Emma will never understand that. But she guesses that they live a bit outside of the most crowded parts of the city and the Mary Margaret is always toting Leo around to school and soccer practice or moving all of her crafts that she takes to her classroom. Emma loves her sister-in-law (it’s easier to say than foster mom’s son’s wife), but she is one of those people whose entire life could be found on a Pinterest board where Emma is more thrift store mashup even with her life being more established lately.
Not that there’s anything wrong with living life like that. It’s simply not Emma’s cup of tea.
“So, how many fortieth birthday themed things do you think Mary Margaret has in their house?”
“I mean, obviously forty.”
“Obviously.”
Graham is sitting on the front steps when they walk up, a small envelope in his hand as he stares down at his phone, and Ruby whistles, making him actually jump from his seat.
“What the hell?” he grumbles, clutching his hand and the envelope over his heart. “Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
“It depends. Am I the beneficiary of your life insurance plan?”
“Oh my God,” Emma chuckles, shaking her head from side to side as she adjusts the box underneath her arm. “You two are disturbed.”
“Only my girlfriend is.” He stands from the steps and moves closer to quickly press his lips against Ruby’s. “You two ready to go inside?”
“Were you too scared to go inside without us, babe?”
“If I’m honest, yes. I’m not entirely sure what kind of party awaits us.”
“You and me both.”
Emma steps up the stairs and opens the door, knowing that it’s unlocked and that she can just let herself in. She immediately hears the sound of people talking, most noticeably Leo in his high-pitched voice, but everything looks as normal as it always does. The living room is still neatly arranged, a mixture of white and gray furniture, most of it antique, all scattered throughout. The dining room has place settings arranged, but no one sitting there, so she walks to the back of the home where the kitchen is to find everyone all standing around the island eating off of the veggie place that’s set out.
Huh. So maybe David turning forty means that everything is low-key. That’s a refreshing change of pace.
“Emma,” Leo screeches when he sees her, hopping down from the countertop and running toward her, pushing her back with the force of his hug.
“Hey, kid,” she laughs as she moves David’s present so that she can hug Leo back. He’s getting so big, is nearly as tall as she is now, and he’s only ten. She can’t imagine what he’s going to be like when he gets older. She doesn’t really want to. She’s that aunt who gushes about remembering the day that her nephew was born and grossing him out by talking about it. “Why are you letting all of these people eat my food?”
“Because you don’t like vegetables.”
“I definitely do.”
“You never eat collards, and I always have to.”
“Well, that’s because I don’t like collards.”
Leo scrunches up his nose, his face twisted in disgust like he’s eating those collards, before he grabs her hand and starts trying to tug her back to the entryway. “Come on, Emma, I want to show you my new Captain America shield.”
“I’ve got to go say hi to your parents, but why don’t you go get it and bring it down to show me?”
“Okay.”
He nods his head and then runs upstairs, his footsteps loud, and she turns back toward the kitchen to start talking to people who most likely don’t have Captain America shields in their bedroom. Well, they could. He’s kind of a big deal.
America’s ass and all that.
David is swiping a carrot through a bit of dip, and she takes the opportunity to put her present on the table before wrapping her arms around David’s stomach. He’s so incredibly warm, as always, and she appreciates the solid nature of him as his hand comes up to cup the back of her head, his lips pressing into her hairline.
“Happy birthday, old man.”
“Excuse me. I am in the prime of my life.”
She rolls her eyes, unable to help herself before pulling back and patting his chest. “Sure, if you think so.”
“I do. I’m glad you made it today.”
“And miss your  birthday so that I have to hear it every day at work? Never.”
“That wouldn’t happen.”
“It would,” Ruby adds in. “It would be one of those things that you’d bring up every opportunity you get. You’d feed it into her earpiece while she was on air so that she’d do that thing with her nose where it scrunches up all weird to make her look like a mouse.”
“I do not do that.”
“You do, sweetie,” Mary Margaret adds in, opening up the refrigerator and grabbing a bowl of what Emma sincerely hopes is Mary Margaret’s pasta salad. “It’s so, but it does make you look like a mouse. Or like you smelled something bad.”
“Well, I am next to a bunch of sweaty men. I could smell something bad.”
“True.”
“And Ruby, you can’t say anything. You talk in my earpiece all of the time.”
“That’s my job.”
“It’s not your job to talk about assess in pinstripes.”
“Eh,” she protests, clicking her tongue and tilting her head to the side. “I think it might be.”
“I’m sorry,” a woman Emma doesn’t know says, breaking Emma out of their little bubble to remember that there are other people in this house. “What is it that you do?”
“Oh,” she sighs, her mouth suddenly dry. She’s not conceited, she doesn’t think, but it’s been awhile since she met someone who wasn’t in her circle and didn’t know about her job. “I’m a reporter for the Yankees. Emma Swan. It’s nice to meet you – ”
“Jasmine Anwar. I teach with Mary Margaret.”
“She’s my teacher,” Leo adds in, running back in the room with a shield that’s nearly bigger than his body. “But I get to call her Miss Jasmine when she’s here, which is super cool because my friends don’t get to do that.”
“That’s our secret, though, Leo.”
“I know, I know. Emma, look at my shield.”
“Leo, it’s time to eat,” Mary Margaret says. “You can show off your shield afterwards, okay?”
“I thought we were eating cake afterwards.”
“We are.”
“So, when can I show off my shield?”
“After the cake, Leo,” David sighs before clapping his hands together. “Let’s eat.”
Inside the bowl was, indeed, Mary Margaret’s pasta salad, and in the oven was a tray of baked chicken, rolls, and macaroni and cheese. It’s the kind of meal that Ruth would make on the weekend or whenever David came home for a holiday, and for someone who eats cereal and Chinese takeout when Graham doesn’t feel like cooking, this is absolutely the best case scenario for her.
Thank goodness for David turning forty and Mary Margaret deciding to keep it low key with just a few friends instead of everyone from both of their offices.
(His thirtieth birthday was insane, especially when she thinks about the fact that Mary Margaret planned it while seven months pregnant.)
Most of the conversation halts with everyone eating, just a few murmurs here and there, but then Ruby gets a glass of wine in here – possibly two – and while Ruby can deal with liquor no problem, red wine gets to her. It’s the strangest thing, but Ruby’s already loose filter becomes, well, looser.
“No, do you guys remember the time,” Ruby hiccups, sipping on her drink while Emma very gracefully shovels more macaroni and cheese into her mouth, “that we were out in LA for work, and David nearly got arrested for walking out of a Walmart with a boxed fan because he threw away the receipt at self-checkout and they checked him at the door?”
“This is not that great of a story, Ruby,” David huffs, crossing his arms over his chest and tipping his beer bottle up to his lips.
“But it is,” Graham protests. “It was a twenty-dollar fan, man. All you had to do was pay for it again, but instead you were one more protest away from getting taken off to jail.”
“I paid for the damn fan. It was on the security video.”
“Yeah,” Emma sighs as she slides her plate onto the coffee table, “but we only know that because you literally demanded to speak to the manager, had to sweet talk your way into the security office, and we spent three hours inside that building all because you can’t sleep without a fan in the room.”
“To be fair, you and I did have a great time while we were waiting. We bought that purple hair dye and streaked your hair.”
“Which was really dumb because I had to be on camera the next day.”
“It washed out.”
“Really? Because I swear I still have purple in my hair if it’s in the right light.”
She tugs at strands of her hair to prove a point while laughter bubbles in her stomach. God, she loves her friends. They’re the actual best. She doesn’t know how she got lucky enough to have them in her life.
“Your purple streaks are probably what made Jones ask you out. He saw that you had a wild side and couldn’t pass that opportunity up.”
She takes that thing about loving her friends back.
She groans, sinking down further into the couch and wishing that she had Leo’s Captain America shield to hide her face so that no one can see the blush that’s rising from her cheeks. Today is apparently a day to bring this up once every hour. It might as well go on her grave stone at this point.
Okay, that’s a little dramatic.
It can at least go in her obituary.
That doesn’t make it any better.
“Emma, can you get me Killian Jones’s autograph?” Leo questions, looking up at her from where he’s very enthusiastically scarfing down another plate of macaroni. He’s not going to have any room for cake at this rate.
“I’m not sure if I can, kid.”
“But you know him! He asked you on a date!”
She’s going to dye all of her hair purple, change her name, and move countries. That’s even more dramatic, but she seems to be on a role with being dramatic tonight.
Italy would be nice. There’s lots of pasta there.
“I’ll ask, kid.”
“I want it on a hat.”
“Leo,” Mary Margaret scolds, “use your manners.”
“I want it on a hat please,” he corrects before shoveling more food in his mouth. “Can we have cake now?”

And if I said the feedback from fans that the Duffers were referring to, was in regards to all the Mike slander, from both ga and bylers alike, meaning what they may very well have went back and changed/added was more of Mike’s perspective, in a way that will satisfy both the ga’s desire to like his character again and for bylers to have more insight into his feelings, then what..?

Good to See You, Doc
*It was requested by @queenlmno that I post this fan fic one-shot here. It was on fanfiction.net, but I took it down, as I made it a chapter in a larger full length Cars 3 story, where it ended up being about 98% the same. So here is Chapter 6 of He’d Grown Up Just Like Me, in its original form:
Doc Hudson looked up at his own face staring down at him from the faded sign. Lightning had called him a few days ago, in the middle of the night no less. He sounded lost, which didn’t surprise Doc based on what he knew of Lightning’s recent activities. Doc and Sally had seen clips of Lightning on her TV when he was in the demolition derby at Thunder Hollow. Thunder Hollow certainly seemed to have changed a lot since Doc had last been there. By contrast, Thomasville looked almost the same, except for being somewhat worn down. Since he knew Lightning was in the vicinity, Doc told him to meet him here. Doc didn’t think he was ever going to set a tire here again, but the circumstances called for it. He knew there was someone here who could provide more help than he alone could.
“Good to see you, Doc!” A familiar voice called out.
Doc had been so lost in his thoughts that he hadn’t even noticed Mack pulled over on the side of the road and Lightning heading across the road toward him. There was a yellow Sports Coupe with him whom Doc didn’t know but thought he had seen in the footage from Thunder Hollow.
“Hey kiddo. You made good time”
“I made good time? How did you end up getting here first?” Lightning also had to admit, after getting the ‘old man treatment’ for days it was somewhat refreshing to hear someone still refer to him as a kid.
“I have my ways, son. I haven’t taught you all my tricks yet. So, are you going to introduce us or are we going to keep acting like we don’t know each other?” Doc said, referring to the yellow Coupe.
Lightning gave a nervous laugh. “Oh! Yeah, sorry. Cruz, this is Doc Hudson, my crew chief. Doc, this is Cruz Ramirez, my trainer.”
Cruz rolled forward. “It’s an honor to meet you, Doctor Hudson. Mr. McQueen has told me a lot about you.”
Doc almost had to laugh. He couldn’t imagine someone referring to Lightning that formally. “Please, call me Doc. So, you’re the one who’s been responsible for keeping Lightning in line?”
She looked a little sheepish. “Well, sir, I’m not entirely certain I’ve been the best one for the job.”
“Oh, I’m sure you’ve been doing just fine. Trust me, this kid can be a headache sometimes.” Doc said with a teasing grin on his face.
“Hey!” Lightning said indignantly.
Cruz relaxed and gave a laugh. “Yeah, I’ve started to notice that.”
“Hey!” Lightning said again.
Doc turned his attention back to Lightning. “Alright kid, the reason I wanted you here is that there’s someone I think you should meet who should be able to help you out, so c’mon.” Doc started to lead them down the road.
“Hold on a second Doc “, Lightning said as they passed the sign and what looked to be a run-down racetrack “Wasn’t this your home track?”
“Yeah” Doc replied nonchalantly.
“Well can we stop here for a minute?” Without even waiting for a reply Lightning was already heading toward the chained-up gates. The chains easily broke when Lightning pushed against the gates with his hood.
“Mr. McQueen, are you sure we have time for this?” Cruz said from behind him.
“For this? Definitely.” Lightning had a look of pure awe and delight on his face.
“You realize this could technically be seen as trespassing.” Doc called, coming in behind them. Lightning gave no response except for rolling his eyes.
Nostalgia wasn’t even close to describing everything Doc felt as he looked around. He hadn’t seen this track since the day he left Thomasville over 50 years ago. His own crew chief had mentioned in a letter that the track hadn’t been used in decades, and it looked like no one had set a tire here since then. The stands appeared as though they were falling apart, the signs had faded, and the infield had started to become overgrown. The track was in rough shape, but not so much that it was unusable. Using the track certainly seemed to be Lightning’s intent, as he and Cruz took positions on it.
“C’mon guys, let’s take a lap!” Lightning called out.
Doc gave a sigh and drove over to them.
“Alright, if we’re gonna do this, we’re gonna do it my way.” Doc said as he took a position in front of both of them.
“And your way means you get to be first?” Lightning said. It was his turn to take a teasing jab. “Well, age before beauty, right?”
“I guess that means I must be the best looking one here!” Cruz called from the back. Doc had to laugh at that. Despite whatever she might think of her own abilities as Lightning’s trainer, Cruz could certainly hold her own with him. Doc could already tell there was something about her that he liked. He rubbed the dirt with his tire. He felt the same anticipation and trepidation that he felt the day Lightning caught him racing around Willy’s Butte. Well, time was wasting. Doc revved his engine and took off.
It was a surreal experience for the Hornet. The last thing he expected was to be back here racing on this track, even if it was an informal race between friends. As Doc circled the track, he could hear Lightning and Cruz on his tail laughing about something called ‘The School Bus of Death’, whatever that was. But what going on behind him started to fade away as old memories started rushing back. He could still imagine the place as it was: the stands filled with cars, himself leaving the other racers in the dust, and his crew chief Smokey there in the infield.
Wait a minute. He wasn’t imagining things. Smokey really was there, just a short distance in front of him. Somewhat instinctively, Doc slowed down as Lightning blew past him with Cruz right behind. Clearly Lightning wasn’t expecting anyone to be there either, as he had to screech to a halt to avoid slamming into Smokey. Doc knew having Lightning meet Smokey was his purpose for bringing him here, and yet Doc hung back, still not ready for this face-to-face encounter. After leaving Thomasville, Doc cut all ties with his old gang, including Smokey, not speaking nor even communicating with him for 50 years. It wasn’t until a few years ago that Doc had decided to write to him, and Smokey, to his credit, actually wrote back. However, correspondence was a lot different from a meeting in person. Who knew how Smokey would react? Best not to delay this any further. Doc sighed and went over to where Smokey was talking to Lightning & Cruz. Smokey looked at him and Doc saw there was no animosity in his expression.
“How’re ya doin, Smokey?” Doc asked, finding the courage to speak first.

Villains Lord Zedd Age: 10,000,000(looks 40) Bio: Zedd has survived his previous battle with the Rangers, and returns assuming physical form. He uses his dark magic to create new Z-Putties, and new monsters by infusing random objects with dark magic. He later has Squatt, and Baboo bring back Thrax, and when Rita returns he falls in love with her again. Goldar Age: Unknown Bio: Zedd's strongest minion he still fights the Rangers alongside Scorpina though he sometimes takes time to help her raise their son Glork though that hasn't lessened his ruthlessness or power, and is still a force to be reckoned with Scorpina Age: Unknown Bio: Goldar's wife, and his other most powerful minion. Like him she has to take time to raise their son Glork but is still a powerful adversary who can give the Rangers a run for their money. Finster Age: Unknown Bio: Once Zedd, and Rita's monster maker he is now reduced to focusing his energy on making Z-Putties for Zedd now that Zedd makes his own monsters, and is starting to feel obsolete around the palace. Squatt, and Baboo Age: Unknown Bio: Zedd's bumbling henchmen they accidentally discover the gate to the Underworld which allows Zedd to resurrect Thrax again. Thrax Age: 10,000,000(looks 10) Bio: Zedd, and Rita's son he is resurrected again by Squat, and Baboo around the time Ryan becomes the White Ranger after Zedd discovers the gat to the Underworld. Still as nasty as ever he enjoys treating the Rangers as his personal playthings to destroy. Rita Repulsa Age: 10,000,000(looks 30) Bio: An evil, and powerful sorceress, and the wife of Zedd, and the mother of Thrax she is banished by Zedd for her repeated failures to destroy the Rangers, and Earth. She later returns rejuvenating herself, and uses a potion to get Zedd to fall for her again Mondo the Magnificent Age: 10,000,000(looks 40) Bio: An old ally of Rita, and Zedd's from when they first turned evil. He is strong, and powerful but overplays his strength, and intelligence which leads him to his plans being undone by the Rangers. Changes: The Rangers switch over to the Dairanger suits when they get the Thunderzords. Lord Zedd is Shaddam from Dairanger but his actual suit from the show is used as a power armor he wears to fight the Rangers in American footage. Thrax, and Rita return as Akomaru, and Galra respectfully. Bookala is more of a recurring ally, and takes a position similar to Grandmaster Yufang from Dairanger Kujaku is adapted as a new form for Millenia The Mutiny, Green No More, and Missing Green are merged into a single 2 or 3 part episode that has Pipe Brain as the monster with Tube Monster being an upgraded form of Pipe Brain for the Megazord fight. Ryan Steele is the White Ranger in reference to how Brad Hawkins was originally going to be the White Ranger before they brought back Tommy Rocky, Adam, and Aisha don't replace Jason, Zack, and Trini because I liked it when they were friends of the Rangers who knew their identities, and I want to save them being rangers for Zeo. Bulk, and Skull's friends Rocko, and Cindy are based on a nameless girl character who showed up in Teamwork, and Food Fight who I thought could be an "evil" Kimberly, and a nameless guy character from Food Fight who I thought could be an "evil" Zack. Laurie is based on the actual Dark Yellow from Power Rangers since I thought there should be an "evil" Trini. Mondo The Magnificent who was a one time monster from Power Rangers based on Shadam is adapted into the American version of Zydo though he would still be voiced by Mike Reynolds, and he shows up around the time Rita comes back. Like in Dino for Zyuranger monsters that were good or became good in Dairanger are also good or become good. There will be chapters/episodes for unused Dairanger monsters. Certain episodes will be split into two episodes, or changed around. For instance Two for One is split into two episodes a Billy focus episode where Pursehead is the monster, and a Kimblery, and Ryan focus one where Lipsyncher is the monster. The Power Rangers version of Bird Cage Vagabond is the monster of Blue Ranger Gone bad because his Dairanger episode was a Tenma Ranger focus episode, and Vase can have a different episode. All the various time travel, and alternate dimension episodes are condensed into my version of The Wedding, and all the Dairanger monsters from them will have their own stand alone episodes. There will be a season finale based on Dairanger's finale about Lord Zedd getting his hands on a magic crystal based on the Great Earth Shaking Jewel to give himself, and Serpentera unlimited power. The Cotpotros are adapted as the Z-Putties because I wanted to adapt them, and I didn't like the actual Z-Putties because I thought their weakness of getting hit by a Z on the chest was kind of dumb.

Eazy Peazy- The Chills’ Martin Phillipps speaks! (interview by Jeremy Grites)
So, thanks to our esteemed editor Tim Hinely, I have been a fan of the Chills since I was just a lad way back in 1988 in southern NJ. Flash forward 31 years to February 2019, and I have the good fortune of finding myself sitting on a couch in the backstage of the Trocadero Theatre in Philly with none other than Martin Phillipps. It's been 30 years since the Chills have played Philadelphia and will be my first time seeing them in person - I was underage on the last tour. After meeting the other members of the band and the road crew (all of whom were absolute sweethearts), Martin and I sit down for a few minutes before their dinner.  In 25 years of doing interviews and articles for Tim/Dagger I don't think I've ever met anyone more gracious, well spoken and thoughtful as Martin and his mates. It was at once a thrill, a pleasure and a lesson in how a professional musician and lifelong artist conducts oneself. I was nervous as hell.  Enjoy...
Tumblr media
The current lineup
JEREMY GRITES: So, with the new Lp, label and the recent increase in touring - it seems like a new era for the band. Does it feel different and if so, in what way?
MARTIN PHILLIPPS: Well actually James and Todd have been with me 20 years and Erica for 15 years, Olie 18 years - so the band has been together and functional for years, we just couldn't financially afford to tour overseas. It wasn't until we played at the 50th birthday party of a millionaire art dealer who couldn't believe that no one was working with us and he got the ball rolling.  The "Somewhere Beautiful Live" LP which was actually recorded AT that party and we didn't plan on releasing it but we did. Then that lead to the "Molten Gold" single and "Pink Frost 13" - we were sort of testing the waters as a band and then everything got handed to Fire records and ever since then we've sort of been on a roll. I've been writing material constantly - even through my health problems when I was feeling a bit sick and exhausted all of the time. One thing that has changed is not sort of doing things on a 4 track recorder anymore. Generally we are doing like decent studio recording to sort of 'realize the vision' so to speak. And I think we've proved that with the last two albums.  JG: Oh absolutely. The fidelity, the layers - those records are awesome. It's probably sacrilegious for a Chills fan to say, but I think they are turning into my favorites of your catalogue.  MP: Oh that's good! Yes, especially with the new record - I think it's brought us up to a competitive level now if you know what I mean. It really shows what we're capable of and is a sort of jumping off point for us to really start exploring what the Chills can be. I think these last two albums were sort of a bridge to our past and getting the band up to highly functional level, like a machine and particularly with "snowbound" we work really well together.  JG: Yeah, it really shows. I mean right out of the gate with "bad sugar" - it's just a perfect pop song, perfectly executed.  MP: Nearly didn't make the record!
Tumblr media
Martin dreaming about....... In-N-Out Burger’s secret vegetarian menu.
JG: What!? How?? MP: Well it was one that I didn't even want to bring to the band because I thought it was TOO poppy, you know? But then we started playing it and it really turned into something - same with "complex" - the band only heard a rough home demo of that song about a week before we did it in the studio. So that was very much assembled in the studio together, and turned out to be one of the very interesting tracks on the album.  JG: Right. And now the record is out and this US tour has just begun - do you like the touring and traveling?  I know how difficult it can be.  MP: I've really been enjoying this, especially now because we're getting into a pattern, we've been well received, we're playing well and we've always gotten the warmest responses from American audiences so that's a great feeling. I was bit nervous when we started doing gigs in Europe because I hadn't sung even 3 nights consecutively in many years so I wasn't sure how my voice would stand up. So we stagger our gigs a bit now and I'm careful about that. You know "heavenly pop hit" is top of my range and can really destroy my voice for a few days if I'm not careful. More importantly though, I was going back to Europe not knowing how I was confront all of my old wonderful memories from my 20's and the first wave of interest in the Chills.  But Erica our multi-instrumentalist said something very wise to me - she said " don't worry about old memories, create new memories." And she was right. Plus, everything turned out to be so different anyway - I mean the last time we played Berlin there was a wall in it! (Laughter and talking about how cool East Berlin is now...). Yeah but even London is different - the Channel tunnel wasn't there when we were there last, so everything is very different.  JG: and is there more touring after this stint in the US or back home for a bit? MP: No we go straight home after this for a bit. As you'll see Erica is about to have a baby so... JG: Wow she's a trooper! MP: Yes she is indeed.  Part of the reason for doing this tour is to end at SXSW and talk to some international booking agents about taking the Chills to regular festivals and going out for longer runs that are more financially do-able. That is definitely the way forward. We're back in business so to speak you know and there's a new documentary film being made about us that's going to premiere at SXSW while we are there which is lucky.
Tumblr media
The latest album (out on Fire Records)
JG: So even thought the new record just came out, you're already thinking ahead... MP: Oh yeah - I think I already have about 23 songs or concepts for songs, plus a few older things that were never done that I think are worth doing. JG: Wow, that's a lot! MP: And that's just starting to tap into what I really want to do. The main difference with the next one is I'm going to heavily demo everything before into getting studio.  The last 2 records I was not feeling well and it was very hard to concentrate and even now, we're still adjusting the songs as we go. It started to be that way after I got my first porta studio, like post "Brave Words," where I did all my demos for "Submarine Bells," and "Soft Bomb."  JG: Ah yes, I loved each of my porta studios! MP: Yeah, you sort of had to become a master of bouncing tracks (laughter) and I got really good at it.  JG: Oh for sure. We used to do that too - you really had to plan it out in order to make the most of what little space you had.  MP: Yes definitely
Tumblr media
The Chills in Philly at the Troc.  (photo by ???) JG: So there's a lot of Chills stuff happening and even more to look forward to then. MP: Yes exactly. And we're really interested to see what the impact of this movie will be. You know it's a feature length film that is both about the entire history of the band, but also about my health struggles and ups & downs and also my complete eccentricities (laughter) and as a collectors of weird things and maker of strange artworks.  JG: That was another thing I wanted to ask you about actually - your artwork and what's been happening with that lately? MP: I really stopped for a long time, mostly because there was no outlet for it. In the beginning I did nearly all of the art for the record covers etc - that was always part of the whole process. But then later when we're on Warner Brothers there was less to do because things needed to be done quickly, unlike Flying Nun where this could be held up for months.  JG: Yeah I can't imagine the major label scenario.  MP: It's amazing to watch how that machine works. It's fantastic. That’s another interesting thing about the documentary actually is that in going through all of this old stuff we found a lot of the original artwork (through Otago museum having a collection of Martin's works and history of the Chills). Yeah we found the "Rolling Moon" cover as well as the original, unused cover. They found the actual construction that was in pieces and spent 4 months repairing it and its pristine again.  JG: wow, amazing! MP: Yeah and all of this stuff is going to be in the movie I think, although I haven't seen the final edit yet.
Tumblr media
The Chills on stage in 2019 (I believe this photo was from Detroit and taken by Chipper Saam)
JG: Yes I'll be interested to see the old footage and all of the stuff about the old days especially - that was one hell of a graduating class for Flying Nun back then.  MP: yeah back then mostly everyone in all of those bands came from 1 of 3 high schools, everybody knew each other and everybody had seen Chris Knox. You know you used to go see cover bands and stuff, but then we all saw the Sex Pistols on tv and saw Chris Knox who is still one of the most formidable performers I've ever seen - especially when he had the Punks of Anger - it was terrifying and then the Enemy, who were more powerful than Toy Love - who were the people's favorites. They were sort of THE band of the time and the whole Flying Nun community has either played with Toy Love or been to see them and it all came together very quickly. Plus there had already been a few other indie labels but Flying Nun was very lucky to pick bands like the Clean and suddenly - zoom.  JG: Yeah we were fortunate here that we had the Philly Record Exchange which was one of the only places you could find those records because of people Tom Lax and Jacy Webster. We would ride the bus up from Atlantic City to go there just to buy NZ records - like this one: my "Wet Blanket 45" still with the record change sticker on it. (Presents 45 and nerdish-ly asks for autograph) MP: Wow, great! You don't see that one very often.  JG: Another thing I was wondering about was what you've been listening to lately and are there any new NZ bands that you are sort of bringing along or appreciating these days? MP: I'm not as in touch as I really should be. But a band I haven't seen yet but have heard are called Soaked Oats - they're part of a whole scene of bands that are coming up, which seems to happen every 7 or 8 years so. I think they just started out for fun but they've become quite big now and I think you'll start to hear about them - full on sort of power pop, very strong band. So that's one to watch out for. I'm also a big fan of Aldous Harding. I did some solo support gigs with her and she's obviously really going places. She's an extremely courageous artist. It's different in the van now because it's sort of 'headphone world' and everyone has their own soundtrack.  JG: Yeah not like the old days when everyone would get their turn to pick a cassette to listen to and the whole van was stuck with it!  MP: (laughing) Yes, exactly! but out our manager Fiona has some really good choices so it's been fun. It goes from 70's / 80's post punk to girl groups, and then classic like Bowie. I couldn't believe - we've been eating in that supermarket... JG: whole foods?  MP: yeah that's it. The other day we were in one and they were playing the Seeds! (Laughter). And then all this 60's garage stuff.  JG: Man they must have a cool manager, haha MP: yeah must be.  JG: SO what was the first stuff that you really got into? Like, what was your first record you can remember buying or a band that made you want a guitar etc?? MP: the first stuff that made me realize that I was outsider and a little different was probably the Sweet. Everyone always talks about Slade, but I never heard Slade for years! Gary Glitter too, although we're not supposed to talk about Gary Glitter anymore (laughs). But that sort of stuff very quickly lead me to discovering David Bowie so I think probably the first proper album I bought was "Pinups."  I asked my misinformed older sister which was the best Bowie album to get. She should of told me "Ziggy Stardust," but she told me about the one that was currently the latest. Haha. For years I didn't even know they were covers because I didn't think to look at the label to see who wrote them.  JG: Yeah you're like 'wow this Bowie guy writes a lot of hits!' (Laughing) MP: Yeah, and they're all so different from each other!  JG: Indeed!  Well I believe I have used my allotted time with you sir. Thank you so much and break a leg tonight.  MP: Cheers. You're staying for the show right? JG: Of course!  Wouldn't miss it for anything.
