#InsectWeek fashion:

Elsa Schiaparelli (Italian, 1890–1973) for Maison Schiaparelli (French, founded 1927) Necklace & Suit, Fall 1938 collection necklace: rhodoid (cellulose acetate plastic) & metal; suit: rayon, silk, plastic Metropolitan Museum of Art 2009.300.1234, 2009.300.2374
Necklace: "From the fall 1938 pagan collection, this iconic necklace epitomizes Schiaparelli's Surrealist tendencies, perhaps more than any other design she executed because of the unreal idea of insects crawling on your skin as a fashion statement. Because of the clear Rhodoid, a type of cellulose acetate plastic, the multicolored insects seem to be resting on the wearer's skin. Rhodoid was a newly developed material and Schiaparelli was unafraid of using inventive materials for her designs. She appreciated the avant-garde quality and element of surprise infused into the design by using unconventional materials. The pagan collection was inspired by Botticelli's lush paintings; therefore flowers, woodland creatures, foliage, and insects decorated dinner suits, evening gowns and accessories. The multicolored metal insects were also seen securing a ribbon hatband on a doll hat and resting on the collar of a suit [shown here]. This necklace was worn by Millicent Rogers (who also owned the suit previously mentioned), one of Schiaparelli's best clients who was brave enough to wear her outré designs."
Suit: "Elsa Schiaparelli was influenced by the Surrealist art scene of Paris in the 1930s, and references to that movement frequently materialize in her designs. Artists were using collage, photography and paint as their medium; Schiaparelli was using clothing. Here, in a suit from her fall 1938 Pagan collection, she incorporates three elements that have become hallmarks of her career-- interesting fabric, Surrealist elements and unconventional buttons. Schiaparelli scoured fabric houses to find fabrics that perfectly translated her artistic ideas. The crepe used for this jacket and dress is highly textured, adding a rough dimension to the overall design. The Surrealist elements here, the plastic bug ornaments, are shockingly realistic and in juxtaposition to the delicate pink silk of the collar where they rest. As Dilys Blum states in Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli, many designs from this collection featured earthy decorations inspired by Botticelli's paintings, like flowers, fruits, animals and insects. Buttons were another form of expression for Schiaparelli. In this case, the leaf-shaped buttons represent foliate forms, another common motif seen throughout the Pagan collection. This unusual ensemble would require a certain level of fashion bravado, and the previous owner, Millicent Rogers, definitely possessed that."

an incomplete list of chaotic science shit I've done over the years:
collected moss for three hours in the woods to take home and hunt for tardigrades under the microscope (found them!)
tried to neutralise gone off red wine and accidentally turned it green
improvised a smoke bomb with fertiliser and sugar and accidentally smoked out my building
stabbed my own finger with a scalpel to draw blood and examine it under a microscope to diagnose megaloblastic anemia
begged the science department for non-pathonogenic e-coli to genetically splice and make glow in the dark
made green flame candles with wax and copper sulfate
analysed a 1940s bottle of carbonic acid i found in the attic (it was not carbonic acid)
synthesised banana oil and ended up spraying it all over me by over-pressurising the flask (my clothes smelled like banana for weeks)
made bio-fuel by transesterification of sunflower oil
made gooey fondant filled chocolate using invertase enzymes and ate far too many (they were fine)
created benedict's reagent for testing for reducing sugars using copper sulfate, citric acid, and baking soda
attempted to create a non-toxic scent-confusing chemical to throw off illegal fox hunts (unproductive. was just very smelly)
whipped up a solution for developing fingerprints left on paper using ninhydrin and acetone and developed books from the charity shop
leached additives from plastic bags and tested for illegal pollutants (found some!)
determined the iron content of irn bru (disappointingly little)
made a chemical battery using ionic salt solutions
learnt coding to download the entire protein data bank (1TB) to run an antibody discovery search
freeze-distilled vodka to produce concentrated ethanol for a plant extraction before finding out it's illegal
shattered six glass bottles by making elderflower cordial and accidentally leaving them to ferment
held my breath for 90 seconds to surreptitiously abstain from an ethically questionable experiment involving feeding crickets your expelled co2 to measure breathing
synthesised aspirin from willow bark
made art from iodine solution, for some reason, even though ink is the same colour and won't kill you
helped measure a friend's blood glucose after they ate 15 cream eggs, and plotted a disappointedly linear graph
had the brilliant idea of using ethyl acetate and acetone to remove a wall stain (stripped the paint)
extracted the caffeine from 20 bags of tea (it sits temptingly in a glass vial on my shelf, definitely impure, and somehow slightly green)
did all this and still managed to fuck up an omelette

Cyanotype - Movement
Cyanotype worked really well for my last project. Hoping to recreate that success I made some quick drawings Sunday night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I got to school on Monday, I quickly printed theses drawings onto Acetate. I tested the design against a few colours first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy with my experimentation I used the paper I prepared last semester with a friend.
Tumblr media
Last time I worked with this printing style I mainly worked with photos. Using my own art was a massive improvement in my eyes. It made each piece feel more intentional.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The resulting prints had varying levels of clarity, mainly due to my preparation. I do think printing with coloured paper had a big impact on the overall effect of the prints.
In the future I would like to prepare different colours. Reds and pinks would be fun colours to work with.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Your Metabolism:  A Natural Way to Boost Your Energy
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has gained significant popularity as a natural health booster.  From aiding digestion to supporting weight management, this versatile condiment is packed with benefits.  Among its many advantages, its impact on metabolism stands out, making it a go-to choice for health-conscious individuals.  If you are looking to understand how apple cider vinegar can enhance your energy levels, you are in the right place.  As a leading apple vinegar manufacturer in India, Modern Food Products brings you insights into the power of this golden elixir.
Tumblr media
The Science Behind Apple Cider Vinegar and Metabolism
Metabolism refers to the chemical processes your body uses to convert food into energy.  An efficient metabolism helps maintain energy levels, supports weight management, and keeps your body functioning optimally.  Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which plays a key role in boosting metabolic processes.
1.         Improved Blood Sugar Regulation
One of the primary ways apple cider vinegar influences metabolism is by improving blood sugar regulation.  It helps slow down the absorption of carbohydrates, preventing sudden spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels.  This stabilizes energy levels throughout the day.
2.         Enhanced Fat Burning
Studies suggest that apple cider vinegar can promote fat burning by activating specific enzymes that break down fats.  This makes it an excellent addition to your diet if you are aiming to manage weight while staying energetic.
3.         Support for Digestive Health
Healthy digestion is critical for efficient metabolism.  Apple cider vinegar boosts the production of stomach acids, aiding in the breakdown of food and improving nutrient absorption.  As a key product offered by food processing companies in Gujarat, ACV is increasingly valued for its digestive benefits.
How to Incorporate Apple Cider Vinegar into Your Diet
Integrating apple cider vinegar into your daily routine is easy and versatile.  Here are some popular ways to enjoy its benefits:
Morning Detox Drink:  Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a glass of warm water and a dash of honey.
Salad Dressings:  Use ACV as a tangy ingredient in your salad dressings for a flavorful and healthy boost.
Cooking:  Add it to marinades, soups, and sauces to enhance flavors while reaping its benefits.
As an apple cider vinegar supplier in UAE, Modern Food Products offers high-quality ACV that is perfect for culinary and health applications.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar Beyond Metabolism

2.         Promotes Heart Health
Regular consumption of ACV can improve cholesterol levels and support heart health.
3.         Boosts Immunity
Rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial properties, apple cider vinegar strengthens the immune system.

can't believe today's the day! I'm finally posting my fic for the @livelongandpinup Reverse Bang; which means I got to cooperate with an amazing artist, @celestialvoyeur , and write an accompanying piece to their artwork. They then created two (!!) more illustrations, the coverart you see below is one of them; check them out on Celestial's ao3 and tumblr!
the fic is an AOS kidfic where Jim stays in Riverside, and it has, in no particular order, some Andorian and Vulcan headcanons, Spock writing sex educaition books, dyscalculia ed therapy, Hybors, non-binary characters, Nyota and Michael getting married, and, well, some sex. it's E-rated, after all. (I'm pretty content with how chapter 9 turned out.)
Tumblr media
[Image description: A top-down view of a dark blue table top. There are five hands belonging to three people. In the bottom right, there are two small, child's hands, with light lilac skin. The right hand has three fingers outstretched and the left is counting on them. Next to the child, there are white-skinned, adult hands, tanned and covered in black smudges. Their right hand is offered to the child, four fingers outstretched, as if so that it could be used for counting, too. Their left hand is palm down on the table, touching pinkies with the third person's hand. The third person has paler skin and green undertone visible in their finger nails; the two hands look like the second and the third person are sitting very close, shoulder to shoulder. There are small objects scattered across the table: dominos, cuisenaire rods, colourful beads, crayons, bolts and screws. In the top right corner, there is a child's drawing lying on the table. It shows, firstly, a giant pink Hybor (and Andorian rabbit-like creature with antennae) chewing on a Constitution-class starship. Secondly, there is an adult in a golden shirt holding a smiling child on their shoulders, and another pointy-eared adult in a blue shirt standing next to them. There's text written over the whole image, white letters as if written with chalk on a blackboard. The text says, "count your blessings one to 10". Smaller letters in the corner say, "written by: lead-acetate"./end image description]
Celestial's art is gorgeous and I need you to check it out! Once again:

heyo! i'm just starting out with art but wanted to know what y'all thought of my character journal for dungeons and dragons!
it's a lil scrappy but it works (i've been using it for 3+ months now), so any advice to make it look better in the long run? i don't have a color printer so printing out art from online won't help
I'm thinking of using acetate and dry erase, but idk if it would be too expensive (I want to emphasize that most of the icons were not done by me. if you want to pick them up they are $4.50 at penflower-ink's itch.io page)

What even is vinegar?
☝🏻🤓
Vinegar (from Old French vyn egre 'sour wine') is an aqueous solution of diluted acetic acid and trace compounds that may include flavorings. Vinegar typically contains from 5% to 18% acetic acid by volume. Usually, the acetic acid is produced by a double fermentation, converting simple sugars to ethanol using yeast and ethanol to acetic acid using acetic acid bacteria. Many types of vinegar are made, depending on source materials. The product is now mainly used in the culinary arts as a flavorful, acidic cooking ingredient or in pickling. Various types are used as condiments or garnishes, including balsamic vinegar and malt vinegar.
As the most easily manufactured mild acid, it has a wide variety of industrial and domestic uses, including functioning as a household cleaner.

Here's my works for my BFA (Bachelors of Fine Art's Capstone class aka the Exhibition we had to put together yay!!!!)
Tumblr media
It's to note, yes I did use my Small Town AU story as the works I wanted to use. In my artist statement, and the title of my works, I refer to the story as Catalyst and I will be bouncing back from Small Town AU and Catalyst. Small Town AU feels like it's more closer to the original source, the Intermission characters, while Catalyst serves as me slowly but surely taking these characters and changing them in terms of giving them a whole new story as they're in a different and new sort of setting. Like they'll have their own families, reasons to live at this town, some personality changes (mainly the Pickle Inspector group as I am not as knowledgeable on them cool.)
So basically, I'm at that point where this story is between an AU and being its own thing as I want to be able to have these characters stand on their own with more thoughts being put into them as new beings of some sorts. But I have grown way too fond over their original versions of themselves. Googoo....gaga.... much to think.
Here's a simple quick synopsis of Catalyst (as I re-read my artist statement and I don't like it anymore):
In my story I present to you all, there’s a simple small town that slowly but surely changes for the worse. This body of works serves as a small introduction to the world I’ve been creating for around three years. In my artist statement, I touch upon how this small town faces peculiar cases that amplify the feelings of whimsy and the uncanny valley. These issues all stem from one single entity. The Catalyst *insert dramatic music cue*
Yes, the Catalyst in this case is the one, the only, Doc Scratch. But more on that in another time.
And here's a song to listen to while viewing these:
Little Dark Age - MGMT
Tumblr media
ALSO PLEASE READ SOME OF THE ALT NOTES I PLACED ON SOME OF THE IMAGES!!!!
Faces: 8 x 12 inches. Digital print on Arches paper. Additional watercolor and color pencils. (There were going to be more faces, I might draw them digitally and post at another day but aoruaghhh... not enough time to finish them) (also not shipping Die and Quarters lol, I just thought they would match in terms of ah yes the green balls)
I really really really love Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts and think the borders, interlaced patterns, and text(?) or manuscript work is just handled so wonderfully. I also turned to Alphonse Mucha with how he also handled borders and sweeping motions that are a thing of the Art Nouveau (you can tell I am a SLu- for historical or past art works, styles, achievements, and aesthetics. Not so much for DADA surrealism/abstract, faktura, minimalism, etc (more towards modern shit. So like Picasso time stuff to now contemporary art stuff I just don't really fuck with it lol but I'm trailing off)). And so I wanted to try and give a nod to that stuff with the borders I used to frame these portraits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wood panels: 8 x 10 and 10 x 10 inches. Digital drawings printed on mulberry paper that's rabbit skin glued to the wood panels then post coated with acrylic soft gloss medium thing yeahhh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additional leaves lily pad things: watercolor paper with ya know, watercolor, color pencils, acrylic modeling paste is applied to the sides for some texture or add on (I didn't put too much as I ran out of material) and acrylic paint (Liquitex) is then painted on but I used a palette knife to apply and blend some of it in, satin glaze (for the rain drops), pipe cleaner with construction paper wrapped around (for the stalks to bend them and hold them up) Each stalk (which is based on the plant, nasturtium. God I love the flowers and leaves oauragh) has a hole drilled into the wood allowing me to poke then bend the pipe cleaner to hold it still.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additional: Pipe cleaners with construction paper around it for the candles, acetate colored sheets for the light, patterned origami paper on string, and star cut out thingies below wahoo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additional: Oven-bake polymer clay for the meats with acrylic paint then satin glazed, pipe cleaner with foil around it for the hooks, foam board painted silver (acrylic), acetate for the glass, and the body is just tissues crumpled up with a trash bag wrapped around it! BOXCARS WAOUGH

My new year's resolution is to be more arts and crafty, especially since I have £100's of stuff thanks to temu.
Tumblr media
One of the things I loved about Forspoken was the tanta kitties. Wish they'd done more with them, but I love the designs, so I decided to try making my own one.
I planned to make it small, but somehow the armature got away from me, so it's now 4in high and 6in long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a lotta cabachons so I used a couple of sunflower ones for his eyes for a neat effect. The Forspoken kitty has flowers on both sides in a line, but I wanted something a bit unique.
Tumblr media
At first I thought I pancaked the face, but I was on twitter and this came up on my tl so now I'm like 🤷
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I originally bought a mould to make the wings out of resin, but it's too small, so I got some acetate and sketched out a wing shape then used coloured resins to draw and fill it in. It's sealed with a clear resin over the top so it's light but semi rigid. I also put some iridescent pigment powder on it for a shimmer effect.
Tumblr media
And tanta kitty is primed ready for my awful painting skills. I wasn't sure what colour he was gonna be but after finishing the wings I realised I subconsciously made the main parts orange so he's gonna be a derpy orange mess 🤣

CRISWELL SINGS - "Someone Walked Over My Grave"
“Released on Dionysus Records in 1995, a one-time pressing of 1000 on bright orange vinyl with pic sleeve art by Kalynn Campbell. A side Home on the Strange (w/Paul Marco) B side Someone Walked Over my Grave (w/Criswell).   Paul Marco and Criswell had an idea for a movie with the same title Someone Walked... and Ed Wood Jr agreed to make it but Paul and Criswell had to finance it. so they decided to make a Record 1st and would use the money they made from that for the movie... this is what Paul Marco told Kalynn and i when he showed us the original acetate years later that you hear on this release. there is another take with someone singing the same lyrics but it's not Criswell. also this is the only release of the recording with Criswell. they never got to phase two of their plan for the movie. by the way,..”

the drawrings from the mesmerizer cover i just finished <3
but more importantly, i must now explain to you the hashtag situation i created for myself because of my foolish yet absolute refusal to colour it digitally:
SO doing animation on paper is fine. its normal, hell for me its easier than digital, i just use this shitty lil 15 dollar light panel and go to town you know? historically animation was done on paper and/or clear celluloid/acetate plastic sheets (thats why they're called cels after all) for decades and its still being done that way today.
but usually. nowadays. when animation is done on paper it is still coloured and shaded digitally. we are in the age of digipaint. and thats good. before digipaint we used stuff like poster paints or other flat, consistantly coloured paint and applied that on the under side of the clear acetate cels with the ink lines drawn or xerox'd over top.
but acetate sheets for animation are expensive and hard to source where i live. so. instead of something sensible like drawing all my lines and then digitally painting the final pieces. what i did was um. i still painted it with watercolour. so this was the situation:
Tumblr media
faceless...........
i drew the main piece, and then on the same type of paper i used my lightbox to draw on new faces (to save paper i put them all over the paper, using things like quickly traced hair, etc to help line it all up later. for the paint i had to carefully try to match the skin tones around the facial features so when i digitally re-attached them they would match up........ hell of my own creation
i was chatting with my father about it, he doesnt know much about animation at all (his preferred art is b&w sketches and linework) so he didn't understand why i was complaining about the hell of my own creation so much as first. he was like "isnt watercolour what most animation was made with?" and i was like NOOO no no absolutely not <3 backgrounds, the final layer under all the sheets of clear acetate, sometimes may be done in something other than poster paint, gouache, acrylics, whatever paint they used to colour the cels: maybe something like oil or watercolour for stylistic purposes
but no one in their right mind would make even a simple barely moving PV with just watercolours <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

artists from the art and feminism book peggy phelan that i quite liked ( i had these in my sketchbook for a while but forgot to post whoops)
joan semmel-
i love her colours that she uses in painting
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
martha rosler
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
marina abramovic - rhythm 0 performance, all the acts that had happened to her during the 6 hours is astounding with what they done to her body in response to the objects she left in the room and permission to do whatever they wish.
Tumblr media
hannah wilke- reminds me of the clay folding i did
Tumblr media
jo spence- i like the first picture in particular, it reminds me of my painting i did with the compression against acetate sheets. when making that painting i wanted to copy the body prints by elizabeth walden somehow as i really liked how it shows expansion. however compression against another surface could get me a similar image as to waldens prints. so jo spence recording of mammogram seems very fitting for my work.
