The Winter 2025 Bishop Myriel Fundraiser is now open. This year will be dedicated to immigrants, many of whom are languishing in private prisons whose stock just went way, way up.

Our goal this year is at least 25 auction items and over $1000 in funds raised. If you've never participated before, this is your year. DM if you would like to participate but need advice!

Get your fic, art, books, crafts, costumes, and other offers ready. You can submit them according to the rules under the cut, and bidding on each item will start as soon as it is posted. Bidding in REPLIES, NOT REBLOGS, will continue through the end of December 21st, the darkest night of the year.

The recommended places to donate this year are: 1) RAICES Texas, an immigration-focused group which freed more than 2,000 people from immigration detention over the years. They fought to reunify families when children were ripped from their parents' arms during the first Trump administration, and have now pivoted to using funds to provide legal support for the detained, while continuing to pay bonds for those clients.

2) Annunciation House, a shelter serving immigrants. Run by Catholics in Texas who open their doors to the stranger without asking to see their papers, this year they faced down a vicious attempt by the Texas government to shut them down as a "stash house." The attorney general claimed in court that they followed "a more Bohemian set of ‘seven commandments,’ including commandments to ‘visit’ people when ‘incarcerated’ and ‘care (for them) when they’re sick.'” What could be more in the spirit of this fundraiser's namesake, Bishop Myriel? If you are not in the US and/or find it difficult to donate via those pages and/or want to support a particular organization doing good work to assist immigrants that's not listed above, please feel free to select another organization. From groups funding rescue ships in the Mediterranean to those supporting refugees stuck in camps around the world, there is a lot of good work to be done.

1. Offering

SUBMIT your offering post to this blog! Include a link to this rules post in your own post, and also a minimum starting offer for your item, which can be a fic, art, or a physical item--be creative! Your offer does NOT have to be connected to the Les Misérables fandom, although such items are always welcome! Any terms and conditions of your offer should also be included in the post, eg what fandoms you are wiling to write for, any hard no’s on content, etc. Offer posts can keep coming in through the SUBMIT button until the auction closes.

2. Bidding

Bidding on each item opens as it is posted. Only bid on items tagged #Winter25. There will also be a masterpost to help distinguish this year's items from last years. Bid in REPLIES NOT REBLOGS (this is important because replies enable me to figure out who bid when and avoid conflicts) until 11:59PM Eastern Time December 21st, 2024. The highest bidder at that time will be the winner. Bidding can start as each item is posted.

3. Claiming or delivering your item

Please do not donate your bid until I have contacted you to inform you that you won the item!

If you have won an item, I will contact you directly via DM and ask you to provide a receipt or other verification for a donation to an immigration organization in the amount bid. This DM may come from either @bishopmyrielfundraiser or my main blog @lifeisyetfair. After you have made your donation, send such the receipt or verification bishopmyrielfundraiser@gmail.com or in a screenshot on Tumblr. Make sure the proof contains the amount you donated!

AFTER I have verified your donation, I will contact the offerer to let them know they can deliver the item. If you do not respond at all to my attempts to contact you within one week, I will move on to the next highest bidder. So check your DMs.

4. Sending the item you offered

All items should be delivered by March 31st, 2025 at the absolute latest, unless you have made other arrangements, eg the custom item/fic takes longer than that to create or write and you communicate about this. Earlier is even better, but remember that the most important thing is to keep the winner informed and make sure everyone has a good time.

HP Ace Aro Fest - 2025

It is official, we are back for the second year running! Our amazing fest was created to highlight any character who you see as asexual, aromantic, or anywhere on those spectrums.  Any era, any age, anyone.  Give me your QPRs, your sex-repulsed lovey-doveys, your hypersexual aromantics, and everything else you got.  As long as you give me a main character from the HP fandom who is a-spec, your work has a home with this fest.  Accepting fic, fanart, podfics, any medium your heart desires to give us.

Whose sim closet would you raid? (townie, mutual, or your own)

The way my style changes every other year, I can't really think of a sim whose closet I'd raid. But If I had to choose based off my style preferences now, the closest sim would probably be Renee. I wouldn't wear these dresses on a daily basis, but I would love to have them in my wardrobe for special occasions. That, and she lives with a rich stylist for a best friend.

What references shaped your CAS style?

My own visions or people I know in real-life. Also, my Sims traits and favorites, in addition to inspiration from Pinterest or more rarely Movies. For the most part, my saves are always set in a modern timeline (anywhere from 2010s to 2020s), I don't think too hard on my Sim's style or fashion. I spend more time in trying to avoid using too similar of styles of my Sims throughout generations. For example, with my teen males, I tend to dress them like my brother or my guy friends from High-school, but sometimes I look for reference photos.

Favorite swatch? Least favorite swatch?

When I did play TS4, my favorite swatches were always the pastel ones or minty greens/teals :). In Sims 3, color wheel, I can for the most part make any swatch/preset I want. However, for my kids/toddlers, I love using the patterns under themed.

What’s something you always do when styling sims?

Try to give them a defining feature to set them apart. I mainly do this with either their style or some type of skin detail, as I like for my Sims to have a unique feature about them while still looking related to their family. Whether it's them having glasses, birthmarks, freckles, dimples, scars or unnatural hair color or occasionally being an occult.

With my Cosmic Legacy Heirs so far, Cyrus had his dimples. Mercedes, with her red hair, she inherited from premade mom Kerry from Starlight Shores. And Vincent with his skin condition of Vitiligo.

CAS item you’ll defend with your life?

Piercings and Tattoos. If my main Sims don't have some type of piercing or tattoo, then they really aren't my Sims. Proof being all of my Cosmic legacy Heirs have nose rings like me :).

- J'ahden Kaji (🏷️) (inspo) - Arley's adopted Seeker elder brother. Not affiliated with any Miqo'te tribe. Co-WoLs (albeit Echo-lessly) with Arley when necessary

- Rymmgeim Junghyltwyn (🏷️) (inspo) - WAR-main Sea Wolf, also has the Echo, joined the Scions and became one of Arley's most dependable allies in combat

… and various other minor characters to supplement their lore.

☆The (alternate) universes my OCs feature in are:

- Main Scenario Quests AU (🏷️) - follows the main story of the game very closely, with Arley in the Warrior of Light role. Most of my fic is based in this world

- Roleplay AU (🏷️) - aka non-WoL!AU, for whenever I'm struck with the fancy to RP with others on Arley as just another Regular Adventurer. Differs as little or as much from MSQverse as is suitable for whatever the RP content is

- The Epilogue (🏷️) - though not an "AU" as such, this post-timeskip period a decade or so after the events of the actual game is the one I'm (most) hopelessly obsessed with, because it stars my beloved "grandkids" (i.e. the children of my first-generation characters)

- Modern AU (🏷️) - aka Community College AU, a silly idea that grabbed me by the throat and would not leave me alone when I was exploring what Arley and Thancred's relationship would be like under entirely different circumstances

Introductory Post

Haiiii!!! Hello :3 My name is Fen and this is a blog dedicated to an already played-out ClanGen. Played-out, you ask? Well, since I have no access to the full PC downloadable version, I must use the mobile version of ClanGen. The mobile version does not properly save, so, to avoid the loss of my OwlClan, I went through the entire story of our main character, who, I’ll let you find out who that may be in the future.

I had taken screenshots of 56+ moons and plan to draw them as my own interpretations here. Since I do not have access to the PC version, I will be going off mobile and my own additions + creativity! I don’t know how often this will post, or when I will officially get rolling with it, but I do hope you come along for the ride.

how do you deal with hate? like from what I understand, you posted your first "controversial" post knowing that people might hate you for it, and you did so anyways. even tho it might have felt like you were the only one who believed those things at the time. where do you get the confidence? cause honestly that was such a slay.

I really want to play it cool and say something like “I just don’t care what people think of me,” but honestly? Yeah I was terrified of posting my first BSD-related post.

I had been enjoying the BSD fandom from afar for about a year before posting anything about it. I’ve always had this personal pet peeve when (fictional or real) bullies get a free pass to be assholes when they’re conventionally attractive, but that applies to all fandoms, not just BSD and not just Dazai. 

(Note that that’s not a moral stance, there’s nothing wrong with liking a morally grey character, and there’s nothing wrong with finding a bad (fictional or real) person to be physically attractive. This pet peeve of mine stems more from how (fictional) bullies who aren’t attractive are seen as the biggest evil unleashed upon the world, while fictional bullies who are attractive are seen as The Ideal Boyfriend)

One day I saw a post pointing out one of the things Dazai did that bothered me, and I really wanted to add to it via reblog, but I was concerned I’d derail the original post, so I screenshot it and wrote a whole follow-up rant. 

Then I saved that post in my drafts for three days.

I posted something vague like “I really want to talk about this one character from this one fandom, but the fandom is very aggressive and they’d burn me at the stake if I said anything too controversial”

I don’t think I intended to explicitly tag it with anything searchable, but I must have said something like “#yeah this is about bsd those guys are scary”— apparently that counts as tagging it #bsd by tumblr’s standards, and someone from the bsd fandom (who I’m now mutuals with) responded with something like “most of us are nice! We wanna hear what you have to say!!” 

That was enough motivation for me to get that post out of drafts, and even then I didn’t post it immediately. I scheduled it to post for a time when I wasn’t home, so that if there’d be backlash I wouldn’t have to witness it live and I could just delete the post later.

Not only was there no backlash, but hardly anyone saw the post. Iirc it got between 3-5 notes. That was what gave me the confidence to continue talking about my (admittedly controversial) fandom opinions. 

My main blog is primarily a Shakespeare/Classic Lit blog, and the online fandom for those things encourages controversial opinions (as opposed to the standard anime blog, where it seems like posting controversy is a taboo). So once I had the confidence to interact with an anime fandom in the first place, it wasn’t too hard to post my controversial opinions, because that’s the internet culture I’m more used to.

As for how I deal with the hate, you’ll be glad to know there’s only one person on this entire site who sends (bsd-related) hate. If you’ve received any hate, it’s from her. So while I have received hate messages (everything ranging from “your blog sucks” to graphic suicide bate and murder threats), knowing it’s all from the same person makes it all pretty meaningless. Everyone else on tumblr just blocks what they don’t want to see, either by blocking blogs they’d like to avoid or by blocking tags for subjects that annoy them. 

Since I tag anything that speaks of Dazai in a negative way as “#anti Dazai,” I don’t often run into people who don’t want to see negative character analysis who’ve discovered my posts accidentally.

If you want to post about something, go right ahead! The people who enjoy the content you make will follow you, and the people who don’t will block you, and everyone will curate their own tumblr experience to make this site something we can all enjoy. Admittedly if the fandom you’d like to post to is bsd, you WILL get harassed by that one person, but everyone else in this fandom has gotten harassed by her too. We mostly just ignore her at this point. 

Posting controversial opinions to fandom spaces can be scary, but if you have something you’d like to post, go for it! I personally would recommend starting a side blog for it, that way if things really do get out of hand you could delete it easily without losing your tumblr account. But the most likely outcome is that it wouldn’t gain enough traction for anyone to be overly bothered by it. Controversial things are more often ignored than hated on.

(For context, I’m referring to this blog too! I’m a tiny little blog. So please don’t interpret that as some veiled insult, I’m in this group of “tiny controversial fandom blog” too)

Reminder to not support Puppyluver256

It's come to my attention that this user is still complaining about being called out for their passive-aggressive stance on Palestine and is continuing to play the victim online on other people's posts in the tags. Click below for a summary of the timeline of events.

First and foremost, Puppyluver256 was called out for their so-called “free verse poetry," which reduced the Palestinian Genocide to a religious war and martyrdom versus the reality of it being a violent mass execution by colonizers. The poem is filled with “oh woe is me” lamentations and what I later described as “melancholy platitudes,” where they used the situation as a soapbox to air their personal grievances. They complained about how they were both unable to escape all the terrible news coming out of the region and how they were being made to feel bad for not caring enough. They assert (in the tags) their personal (and in my opinion, manageable) problems held more weight and significance. The entire piece is utterly tone-deaf in nature and spoken from a place of both ignorance and insensitivity. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again:

You, as an individual, get to choose your level of involvement when it comes to the news. Whether you stay informed or stay in the dark is ultimately up to you. However, the core of my criticism against this person is three-pronged.

1) If they wish to remain disengaged, they can’t have an opinion on the genocide because they are actively choosing to not follow recent developments. You’re either participating in the discussion or not. There is no middle ground, especially with genocide as the subject.

2) By interjecting their own personal spin on a situation they lack a critical understanding of, they are aiding in the spread of misinformation. Anyone who has been watching the news on Palestine knows this is not a religious war. This is Puppyluver256’s own biased opinion.

3) Anyone is allowed to take breaks for the sake of their mental health. That was never debatable. But if your main complaints are seeing this subject discussed on other people's blogs or seeing others engage in online protests, you are overstepping. You are trying to assert your personal boundaries on others. That is not fair. You have no right to criticize how others participate in their own protest against online censorship.

I sent them this anonymous message about how bad their poetry framed the Palestinian Genocide. From there, they continued to make passive-aggressive posts on social media and reblogs with tags that were obviously pointed at genocide news. (As a side note, even though this person claimed otherwise, each post they made has coincided with dates of breaking news coming out from Palestine.) They even ranted about seeing more news on Christmas Eve. At that time, Bethlehem was being bombed. Here is said screenshot (which they have since deleted).

In response to their endless complaints and selfish mannerisms, I also finally tagged their mutuals about their problematic behavior, as it was evident they were attempting to jump on the bandwagon to avoid losing face by suddenly reblogging a pro-Palestinian post (and tacking on their own self-righteous tags).

But even now, nearly a year later, Puppyluver256 continues to portray themselves as a victim to anyone who will listen. Even when they finally addressed the callout, they continued to just ramble about themselves and their “superior” victimhood, refusing to acknowledge how they framed the Palestinian Genocide in their previous post. Instead, they took the opportunity to make their personal discomfort the most important subject. They went off on wildly absurd tangents, including criticizing people who were making pro-Palestine Pokémon fan art, yet in the very same rant, attempting to promote their own Fakémon projects. The irony of this is not lost on me, and it’s appalling that this person would try to use that discussion point for their own gain.

The rest of their over-bloated response was filled with false claims:

Stated that they knew about Palestine for 20+ years, and yet in one of their previous tags they admit to having NOT seen anything of Palestine until recently.

Making random snide remarks about religion, including calling the Bible a “bizarre storybook”. As if their anti-religious bias was important to the topic of the Palestinians (It's not. Especially when many Palestinians still look to their own faith in this ongoing holocaust.)

Trying to retroactively prove they supported Palestine by unknowingly boycotting certain pro-Israel corporations (Starbucks/Walmart/McDonald's) long before news broke.

Claiming I misgendered them to discredit me when their pronouns had been fully displayed on their social media as she/they for years prior until they swapped to full NB they/them two whole weeks before their initial response.

I replied to their rant and broke it down point by point HERE, finding numerous holes in their arguments. Everything else in that rambling mess had no cohesion or focus. All it did was confirm to me that even in the response, they couldn’t give Palestine the proper attention it deserved.

To be frank, this person displays a great deal of ignorance in the subject by interjecting their own emotionally charged opinions into the discussion while refusing to consider the censorship the West has imposed or how damaging mislabeling a genocide on social media can be.

Now that I’ve summarized everything, I need to address the tags in the most recent screenshots that Puppyluver256 is using to make more petulant remarks. (Take note, they often try to latch onto posts of different contexts as a form of validation for themselves.)

On these last two posts, I have no issues with the OP's. My criticism is with Puppyluver256's tags on these posts. To go back to my earlier statement on their behavior, I only have this to say: The answer is no.

Puppyluver256, you don’t have the right to criticize people trying to fight back against Western censorship over a genocide that our USA politicians are backing. For someone who proudly calls themselves a secular humanist, you should be more supportive against this government-sponsored holocaust and its censorship.

You are completely capable of curating your online feed to avoid all this discussion yet you are either too lazy or too self-absorbed to make an actual effort. I strongly suspect it’s the later and why you made that poem in the first place, why you continue to talk about Palestine in a roundabout way.

You are egocentric and want everyone to listen to you, even if you have an uninformed opinion about a subject you claim stresses you out.

You want to act like the smartest person in the room with a nuanced opinion on everything, but not do any serious critical thinking because you have “the emotional constitution of an improperly set flan” (Your words, FYI).

You hide your true thoughts behind passive-aggressive posts and "vagueness" to avoid being criticized because you want to say anything you want without consequence, but I’m here to tell you that’s not how free speech works.

And I also didn’t twist your words. I took your words and detailed where you got it all wrong:

• You reduced the Palestinian Holocaust to a religious war. • You have made continuous snide remarks about news appearing on your dashboard, refusing outright to take control over what you see, something you even admitted in your own post.

• You tried to cover your ass by claiming to be informed when everything has demonstrated otherwise.

I don’t back down from calling out your rotten behavior. In this day and age, when Gaza is still suffering, people shouldn't be using the Palestinians as an excuse to masquerade as a first-world victim online or trying to complain about how other people are fighting censorship on social media. Yet here you are, a year later, still talking like this online in your tags.

The only one trying to twist things around is you. You are 100% in the wrong. You’re only upset that your actions were met with consequences. You’re a two-faced jackal who cries "harassment" while trying to downplay your own actions and hide/block everything to avoid taking any personal responsibility for your immature behavior.

To everyone else, Puppyluver256 is not someone to support. This post is not an endorsement to harass, I am only calling out this artist because this is a continuous pattern of troubling behavior. Please consider supporting other artists, especially Palestinian creators, and stay informed about who you follow on social media. There is still an ongoing genocide. Even in online spaces, how people react to this continuing news can truly be telling of what type of person they are. Especially if they use it for sadfishing.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater

Remember that your current user base, by and large, enjoys the way most things are currently so many of your planned changes should allow for legacy users to have a consistent experience. That means allowing newer settings to be deselect and remembered between sessions. If I have to opt out of algorithm bullshit every time I'm gonna be too frustrated to stick around long.

You've got some excellent points though. There IS a bit of a steep learning curve and I agree that some changes would assist with that. Just be careful those changes suit the existing environment and don't seek to teraform it to more closely resemble larger social media sites. People will come here because you can provide something those other sites can't, focus on that experience rather than trying to replicate what other sites can provide.

Principle 1

Hard agree that search engines landing on the blog as if it was a separate entity from the Tumblr biosphere is an issue. A universal UI that connects the site together would be more suitable as Tumblr's strengths lie in it being an interactive community as opposed to a series of disconnected blogs.

Principle 2

This is where you'll need to exercise some caution. The majority of the existing user base prefers the lack of algorithmic content so that must remain a core experience of the site, but that experience makes it very hard for new users to find content eith which to cultivate their own eventual algorithm free experience. Of course Tumblr already has the option for the delivery of algorithmic content so there's no need to reinvent the wheel, simply improve the experience of that feature and make it the default for new users and allow users to set the non-algorithm dash as their default should the choose.

I'd also recommend a permanent way for staff to tag heritage posts as such and weight them more heavily in the algorithm. This serves two functions, primarily it will be one of the main reasons people come to the site (after seeing screenshots of these posts), and secondly making it more likely new users see these heritage posts will help provide context for all of our inside jokes and thus avoiding alienating them because they aren't in on the joke.

Making the heritage tag a clickable link so users can scroll all heritage tagged posts would help with this even more.

Principle 3

This is another area that requires caution. The way conversation can happen on this site is incredibly unique and very special. Disrupting that could spell disaster. With that said I do agree that it's a barrier for new users, and can even be frustrating for existing users.

Replies only applying to the original post is certainly an issue that could be improved. It would be unfortunate to separate replies completely from the original post, but some method of threading replies under a reblog would be useful. I don't think threading beyond that single stage would be advisable however, and anyone wanting to split from the current thread they're participating in would simply need to reblog the post to start their own threaded conversation. This has the added bonus of encouraging reblogs.

What I envision this looking like when someone opens the comments isn't much different from the current experience, except reblogs with threaded comments will appear as an expandable link (with a persistent collapse all widget available).

I feel this compromise prevents undue disruption to the current experience while allowing for more nuanced community interaction.

I love the idea of allowing for an option to remove duplicate reblogs without needing to scroll through my home page and manually deleting them. I'm not sure what form that would take but it would certainly encourage me to engage in more back and forth reblog conversations than I currently do.

Principle 4

I understand the concern here but no. Please. Just, no. Do not remove the ability to have a completely algorithm free dash set as a default should the user prefer. Nothing would make me disillusioned with this site faster than that.

The way for smaller users to become seen isn't by forcing their posts on others, but for them to interact with the community. Yes it's a slog, yes it takes time, but it makes for a far less hostile environment overall. Absolutely keep the algorithm driven feed as an option for people, and I'd even be willing to compromise so far as to have a single algorithmic post at the top of my dash. You already have blazed posts showing up throughout a dash scroll and you've made that an easily accessible way for smaller accounts to get noticed.

Between blazing posts, an optional algorithmic dash, and encouraging greater community interaction there is already an effective way for those smaller blogs to be seen. If anything the issue lies in people not understanding that Tumblr works differently than other sites and education will be more effective than changing how the site operates on this issue.

By centering the algorithmic experience you're actually encouraging LESS community interaction and moving toward a more passive site experience. More importantly encouraging a more hostile environment. Overwhelmingly the content that is most likely to succeed on an algorithm centered experience is rage bait.

In summary, don't prioritize algorithmic content, just encourage more community interaction to get noticed. Comment, reblog with your take on something, reblog with tags even. Interact. That's how making friends works in the physical world too.

Conclusion

There is absolutely room for change and evolution here, just don't lose sight of what makes this place so beloved by it's existing user base in an attempt to appeal to a larger audience. Don't try to replicate what other sites already deliver or you'll wind up replicating the parable of the dog and his reflection. Seeking to acquire two bones you'll risk losing the one you already have.

Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.

The Diagnosis

In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience. 

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content. 

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up. 

We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.

Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.

Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.

Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.

The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.

Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant.

Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.

Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.

Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread. 

Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads. 

Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed. 

Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.

Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.  

Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.

The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.

It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.

Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it. 

Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.

Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.

Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.

Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.

Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.  

Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.

Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.

Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.  

Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages. 

Test what the right daily push notification limit is.

Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.

The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.
