Grian holds his wing out to be examined, trying to sketch out various schemes for his base with colored pencils while Scar runs his hands through his feathers, carefully preening spots Grian can’t reach. It’s easy to get distracted by how good Scar is at it, how nice it feels to be in contact with someone else for long enough to get his wings cleaned up. (It’s almost embarrassing, getting distracted by it; preening is like, an activity he has to do really regularly, and he normally gets someone to help, it’s a bonding activity or whatever. But still, every time, he finds himself almost surprised by how much the small display of physical affection affects him.)
“You know, I’ve always wondered,” Scar starts. Grian puts down a pencil.
“Yes, Scar?”
“The, the eyespots. I looked it up once, you know.”
Grian rolls his eyes. “We’ve been over that I don’t know what kind of bird I am, Scar. This is a conversation we’ve had repeatedly.”
“Yeah, yeah, but like... the only birds I could find with them either used them to show off to mates or -”
Grian chokes. “I’m sorry Scar, what?”
“Yeah! Peacocks that have their tails pruned so they don’t have as many eyes don’t get as many mates. Don’t worry though, Grian, your weird fake eye spots are very attractive. Why, I’d even say they’re adequately so!”
Grian flaps a wing back to smack Scar with it. Scar yelps. “Hey! See if I keep helping you!”
“You have literally never turned this down,” Grian says.
“I could,” Scar says.
“Sure,” Grian drawls, injecting as much sarcasm into it as possible. Scar huffs.
“Anyway, I looked it up. The other bird I could find with them was an owl that had them on the back of its head to trick predators. And I looked them up in a lot of other animals, and they’re to make predators think they’re stared at. Scare ‘em off.”
“So?” Grian says, settling his wing back into place so Scar can go back to preening it.
“So that’s weird, right? We don’t even know what kind of bird you are, and you have like, spots to scare off predators! What kind of thing even eats a bird as big as you?”
“Nothing, I would hope!” Grian yelps.
“Yeah, but you’ve gotta have the spots for a reason,” Scar says. “And...”
Grian tilts his head and waits.
“...there are things out there, you know,” Scar says, and this time, it’s in the voice of one of those sorts of people who is far too connected to the magic of the world. “I worry.”
“Well,” Grian says, suddenly feeling somewhat uncomfortable. “Well. I have the spots; I open my wings at people when I’m frightened, anyway. If they really are for scaring people, that would scare them off, right?”
Scar is quiet. He cards his hands through Grian’s wing, and Grian resists the urge to shudder into it.
“Right,” Scar says, finally.
“Besides,” Grian says. “What are the odds of finding out why I have those things? Basically none, right?”
“Grian. Grian. Please don’t say that.”
Grian cackles before saying, slowly and cheerfully: “But Scar! What could possibly go wrong!”
“Grian, no, don’t say such cursed words around me! No! Fiend!”
The conversation moves on. Grian doesn’t quite forget about it.

my never ending search to acquire more and more obscure pieces of Pokemon media has lead me to understand some wild shit in gen 1 and 2. like anytime you think “oh that’s weird, why is [thing] like that” it’s probably either some obscure shit or something got changed in beta
for example, you know those weird-ass pokedex entries for Kadabra that are like “lol a kid turned into one of these once. no we’re not explaining anything”
well there’s this book in Japan called Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia released in 1996 that was never translated. It’s notable for basically being the Forbidden Adult Pokedex(TM) that we all want, as it has much longer ‘dex entries for each Pokemon along with more scientific data. While large portions have been retconned over the years, it offers some massive insight into what was going through the dev’s minds when writing this shit, and is 100% canon (for the time period it was written in).
anyway, while it was never translated, DidYouKnowGaming?, being the hero we all need, purchased a copy and had the same translator who translated the games themselves translate the book. Part 1 of the video is below, and I highly recommend you check it out if you like obscure vintage Pokemon shit.
Anyway, the point is that this is what it says about Kadabra:
FUCKING KAFKA. IN MY POKEMON. IT’S MORE LIKELY THAN YOU MIGHT THINK
So basically the ‘dex entries are referencing an in-universe book plot that’s a reference to The Metamorphosis, except due to a lack of space they fucking cut out the part about it being a book, which seems kind of important, but hey what do I know
(Side note: the ‘dex entries saying stuff like “it is rumored that” and “a theory exists” don’t quite line up with it being a book plot, so it’s possible this was retconned, or the book was based off an in-universe event. but this at least tells us why these weird-ass entries exist in the first place and that’s enough for me)
anyway the most important part of this is that the Abra line is confirmed to not be based on foxes, possums, or cats, but cockroaches. thank you for coming to my TED talk

The name Castiel means "God's Shield." He is the angel of Thursdays, protector and friend of the Winchesters, father to the nephilim, Jack Kline, and lover of humanity.
Castiel, or just "Cas", was stationed on Earth for thousands of years before he defied his fellow angels to help avert the first Apocalypse. He rescued me from Hell and returned me to life, reconstructed my body and left his handprint behind as a physical representation of the bond we share. He fought beside me when the two of us were trapped in Purgatory. After Metatron stripped him of his grace, he was human for a time, and lost the use of his wings along with all the other angels expelled from heaven.
He has helped us, saved us, betrayed us, healed us, and left us...but he's always returned. He is my comrade in arms, and the best friend I have in the world. I know he will always have our backs, no matter what, and we'll always have his. He's family.
Cas gave up his life to save me, one last time, but that's not the end. I'm coming for you, Cas. I love you.
