collaborated with my friend tyler on a game for the Extra Credits Game Jam #3, the theme was “cycles” so naturally we made puns out of it - the big bad boss is a motorcycle, our cute lil player character is based on a little kids bike (he’s still got his little training wheels, aww)... i did all the art and he did all the code and animations, it’s really wicked cool and we made it all in four days!! :D super excited to be able to share it with you all. it’s FREE TO PLAY!! you can download it here :) i'd say it’s pretty good for something made in 4 days by two folks who have never made a proper game before, we’re quite happy with it and we hope you enjoy it!! <3

Oh boy now I'm. Very Concerned about what leaks you've heard about TLOU2. I was already not planning on spending money on it at launch due to concerns about working conditions, but if it turns out the story goes in a stupid or bad direction I may as well not even get invested in it. May I ask what you've heard?

Potential spoilers under the cut (sorry if the readmore doesn’t work for mobile users, this is your warning). I’ll attempt to word them vaguely, but it’s pretty damning. It’s looking like they’re Game of Thrones-ing the series.

Non-spoiler TL;DR: 

Terrible dialogue and social-justice* focused writing;

Potential (unconfirmed, needs more context) TERF-style transgender stereotyping;

Punishing players for the morally-grey decisions made at the end of the first game;

SuBvErTiNg ExPeCtAtIoNs. I cannot properly express how much I despise this term but also acknowledge that it applies here. 

*The Karen kind, not the actually-trying-to-make-the-net-a-nicer-place kind.

So in essence: 

A disgruntled employee leaked part of the chapter roadmap and several cutscenes that feature the death and/or maiming of the first TLOU cast, as well as a chunk of the game where you play as the person responsible for said murder/maiming and have it forcibly beaten into your (the player) head that the cast of the first game were Not Nice People And You Should Feel Bad For Liking Them. (Please read that with several layers of annoyed sarcasm.)

Opinion: We know it was morally grey. We know why Joel did what he did. We know Ellie was lied to about what actually happened. Knowing these things made the story more interesting, more real. Things aren’t black and white. 

<SARCASM> And YET! Did you know that Killing People Is Wrong and totally justifies the dead-guy-from-the-first-game’s kid starting a cult to murder the main characters? You’d better feel bad for liking Joel! He was a bad man! He killed someone! Also if you think the first game was good you’re a misogynist uwu. </SARCASM>

Of course, that’s only going from the leaked content, and without more context it’s difficult to justify pretty much any of it.

Also the Bad Part* of the internet is hyperfixating on the appearance of the character who instigates all of this as their appearance at a glance hints toward a pretty terrible transgender stereotype, though ND have not confirmed whether or not the character in question is trans at all as far as I know. It’s definitely pulling the transphobes out of the woodwork that’s for sure.

Your Shield

Ever since Caspar was a just a student, he had a tendency to put himself needlessly in danger. It seemed like nobody was allowed to get hurt as long as he was around. It didn’t matter if it was an axe threatening to slice through someone’s throat or a simple slash from a dagger, he was rushing over ready to keep them safe. After Caspar had nearly been skewered during one of the skirmishes, you had tried helplessly to stop his reckless behavior.

“What, it’s not like I actually got stabbed, I moved my shield in time!”

“Yes, you protected yourself this time. But look, you just moved the blow, it still scrapped your side. You need to realize your not invincible Cas.”

“So, I was just supposed to let you get killed? Was I supposed to just stand there and watch it happen?”

“Nobody in this army is made of glass, myself included. We can take care of ourselves. We aren’t going to magically die off if you don’t come over to protect us.”

“Maybe not, but I’m not going to just stand around and wait for it to happen. Not if I have anything to say about it.”

He was difficult to understand back then. Even now, you supposed, since he was virtually unchanged. He was still head strong, reckless, a bit too noisy for his own good, and still charging head first into danger. The amount of times you’d seen him trudge into the medical tent after a fight was uncountable. The amount of times he’d walked in with blood coating his body, whether it was his own or someone else’s you couldn’t tell, was absolutely sickening to see. But no matter how many times you lectured him, he never seemed to listen.

You feared that, one day, this negligence would be his down fall.

And prayed that the Goddess wouldn’t see it as a challenge.

Fighting former classmates never seemed to get easier. Even if they were supposed to be our enemies, it was impossible to look at them and not see their face from years ago, smiling and laughing the days away. Now more than ever did you understand this as you stood at Gronder field, surrounded on all sides by the people you thought you’d always be with. Having to face them now… It felt unbearable.

Standing face to face with Felix, someone you’d spared with often, ate together, hell you’d even seen him smile once or twice, it was like twisting the knife.

“Felix, please,” Despite what your words, you begin to nock your arrow, “It doesn’t have to be like this.”

“It does. As long as you stand against us, this is how it has to be.” You’d expected a frontal assault, for him to charge in sword bared and ready to cut through your defenses. That you’d have time to prep your arrow, to shoot him down before he could close the distance. But of course that’s not what happened because when is war ever that simple, when are soldiers ever so easy to read.

Not even Felix would fight a losing battle.

He flicks his wrist up, electricity sparking at his finger tips. When had he learned magic? Over the five years, he’d really grown a lot. He was so much like his father. Perhaps, if he killed you, you’d see him on the other side. You fumbled desperately, trying to take aim before he released but you could feel the energy closing in and it was blinding in your eyes and just as you thought you’d feel the life leave your body as lightning entered it, you were enveloped in cool shadows. Sparks practically traveled through his eyes, that damned grin he always wore was torn up as he gasped out in pain. His shield, the one thing he promised would keep him safe, laid lamely on the ground, covered in dust. His hand sat heavily on your shoulders.. And he was shaking.

Did Caspar ever shake?

He chuckled a bit, tried to say something but it died out on his tongue as his knees gave out under him and Oh no please don’t let him die Goddess I’m begging you PLEASE!

Your eyes met Felix’s for a moment, his eyes unsympathetic. Unwavering. But he turned away all the same, his sword gripped in frustration. There wasn’t time to worry about him now. You tried to desperately move Caspar away from the fighting, but he was much heavier than you had anticipated. You managed to hide him behind a tree trunk, gasping heavily from exhaustion. But at least he would be safe. For the most part.

His eyes still hadn’t opened, but he was mumbling something under his breath.

“Caspar… Caspar open your eyes! Dammit…” You didn’t know much about healing, but you had to try something. So you flipped him over ever so slightly, just enough to see his back. The sight made you want to gag. His shirt had been torn by the blast, leaving the cloth charred. His back, already covered in scars and even some fresh wounds, now had a spider web of energy pulsating through. The light zig zagged all through out his back, cutting through scars long closed and allowing fresh blood to seep through. You blinked away from the sight, relaxing your thoughts before raising a tentative hand to his back.

Many soldiers had said that healing magic felt like a tickle, or like a soft light was enveloping them before slowly vanishing into nothing. Yet as you tried to now, Caspar groaned out, shifting ever so slightly away with the little energy he had. The strike must have affected him deeply… perhaps the blast had hurt him so deeply your magic couldn’t reach… fear over took your common sense as you continued to try and heal him. It took a lot of time and energy, but the light did begin to fade from the veins. The scar still showed through, plain as day, but at least he didn’t seem to be in as much pain. Placing one hand lightly against his back, you felt your own head begin to fuzz. Perhaps you had… exhausted ju… just a bit too… m…… m

As the light began to return to your eyes, you had to blink to even properly process it. It was irritating for just a moment, and just as you wished you could close your eyes and fall back asleep, suddenly your memory was flooded. Everything that happened came to you in waves and yours snapped open.

“Caspar! Caspar, where-“ You whipped your head around desperately, relief flooding your system when you saw him sat on the floor, eating a small snack.

You wanted to yell, get angry at him for what he did, make him regret returning to the living, but all you could do was sob. Tears trailed down your face as you tried to get the words out you so desperately wanted to say. To give him thanks for saving your life, to tell him you were glad he was still alive, to tell him…

But all that came out was a bubbly cry.

“Cas… Cas you moron! You absolute idiot!! You stupid, stupid, stupid!” You hadn’t used that nickname for a long time now… you’d forgot how natural it felt on your tongue.

He couldn’t seem to respond, his eyes were clearly guilty but he wasn’t sure what to do, or what to say.

“Don’t you ever do that again! If you do, I’ll… I’ll make sure to kill you myself! I,” you hiccuped, “I… dammit… you’re alive…. You’re alive.”

“I am.”

“You’re back… you’re back, is it…?”

“Scarred? Still hurting? Yea. It still feels like I just got struck to be honest. But, there’s no way I’d ever take back what I did.”

“Cas, you almost died! Not just got hurt, but died! If you had died because of my mistake, do you know how-! How-!” Nothing seemed to be making any sense, you were shaking to your mind was whirling with everything you wanted to say, it all just started tumbling out.

“I would have, would have been crushed. If you had just… and I couldn’t see you. I couldn’t spar with you again, or eat with you, or fish or or- I wouldn’t have you Cas! Just like… just like everyone else. They’re either dead or, or their gone somewhere else or they want us dead and I! Cas I don’t think I could handle losing someone else, not you or Dorothea or even Hubert! Please, please I’m begging you… I know, I know you want to keep us safe but, please, just… stay alive. Please.”

The room was silent beyond the occasional sobbing that once again escaped your lips. Until you finally got your quiet response.

“I… can try. I’ll try to stay alive. I can’t promise I won’t try and protect you but… I’ll do my best to survive, okay?” By the Goddess, he really was a moron.

He was an idiot.

You couldn’t help but chuckle. Did that make you a half wit as well? Perhaps.

“You know,” Caspar dared a look in your direction, his thumbs twiddling about distractedly, “I… I’m glad you’re okay. I was afraid I wouldn’t get to you on time, that if I were too slow, Felix might have…” Caspar was acting uncharacteristically bashful, glancing around at his hands, the wall, just about anything other than your eyes.

You hopped up, slowly at first due to your aching muscles, and slumped down onto the floor next to Caspar. You looked at his back and, sure enough, there were the zig zagging marks covering his entire back. You lightly placed your finger tips on to one of the veins, letting out a small sigh, “Had I been just a bit faster… you wouldn’t have this marking now.”

“What? No, this isn’t your fault I just… Ah, it’s mine, I know I’m reckless and a danger to myself, but I couldn’t stand around.”

“You never could… could you.”

“Heh… I guess not”

You trace your finger across another familiar marking. A large, now slightly opened gash from their days at the academy. The very scar that had caused you to lash out at Caspar for his recklessness all those years ago. It must have been extra sensitive from the damage it took, Caspar shook underneath your touch. You take your finger away, mumbling out an apology.

In an instant, your met face to face with the same lightning charged eyes. Now filled with excitement and wonder and…

His smile was beaming, curling lovingly around his eyes as he let out a small laugh.

“You don’t think something like this is going to hurt me do you? I’m much tougher than that, just look at me! I can handle just about anything.”

“Anything? That’s a bold statement Bergliez. Think you can live up to it?” You smirked at your taunt, you couldn’t help but want to entertain him.

“Of course! Anything you can dish out, I can take ten fold.”

“Really?” A mischievous thought wormed it’s way into your head, and maybe it was from the exhaustion or the heat of the moment, but you didn’t think to stop yourself, “Can you handle this Cas?”

You leaned forward, closing the already short distance between you. His lips were dry and cracked from the attack and yet it was the sweetest feeling in the world. As you pulled back, resting your forehead lightly against his own, you could help but feel cocky after seeing the expression you’d left him with.

Embarrassment, confusion, happiness, all wrapped up into one long sputter, “Wha, I um… that, you. Did you just, did /we?/ Did that happen just now I didn’t, this isn’t like some fantasy my fried brain cooked up, this actually happened, right?”

“As long as my own brain isn’t fried, I’d say it actually happened.”

“Well, if that’s all you got, then I can dish it out ten fold, just like I said!”

People who would much know this IC are mostly limited to Masters which Alter trusts, as he’s rather tight-lipped about it, and Kiara herself, otherwise all he says is that Kiara and him have some sort of past that ended badly, end-of-story

BUT HERE IT IS sorry in advance to mobile users who dont have readmores lmao

HISTORY

As it’s laid out (more or less) in canon, Alter was tasked with hunting down Kiara in a den of her own supporters, which got him pretty fucked up. However, due to the phrasing of this (e.g. that it’s Kiara specifically who is pointed as what corrupted him and not simply the mass murder) and the fact that she’s shown as controlling him in the CCC event makes me assume that his history with her is a bit more involved than just “killed her at the same time as he killed everyone else in her compound”. So here’s my headcanon for their timeline, more or less!

Alter was not able to kill Kiara at the end of his slog through her compound. He was mentally broken down by the sheer weight of the lives he had taken, as well as seeing what those people were willing to do for Kiara and the fact that he recognized these people, and he basically failed the “Kiara saving throw” as one wiki page put it. Alter was incapable of pulling the trigger when he finally reached her, and she took advantage of his mental weakness.

Kiara reached for him and Alter allowed it to happen. She promised something like salvation, a kinder purpose, and rest from the mission he had been forced on. He ended up contracting to her through this, working for her before the counter force (though the CF still owned his soul, preventing Kiara from entirely erasing him, and that contract can never be undone). By the time Alter came to his sense, it was too late and he belonged to Kiara.

This completely doomed the timeline, which it was pretty close to anyways, but letting Kiara continue was the final bell. Nothing would be able to emerge from this timeline intact, though the Counter Force would eventually extract Alter. This means, to Alter, that he was both cemented to Kiara and through his own failure allowed this timeline to die.

Basically he was stuck as Kiara’s lapdog for a few years, subject to the whims of both her and the re-growing population of the cult at large and was used as security for the most part, protecting cult members if things came to the worst, making sure that if someone challenged her they could kill a few cult members but never get too far, doing whatever other things Kiara just felt like telling him to do, etc.. 

Emiya hated her the whole time, but it very quickly went from active hatred to a rather exhausted “i just want this to be over with” feeling. He knows she’s dangerous but he also knows that he’s got a disadvantage to her and he’s still rather tied up to her. He doesn’t want others to fight her because he doesn’t want anyone else to share his fate, but he takes on the mantle of “ill kill kiara” for that reason. He’s just tried of her.

Eventually he did manage to kill her, even though it was too late to save the timeline, but it did free him from being actively contracted to her.

He is still exceedingly susceptible to Kiara. The CCC event proves this -- he ends up working for her, silent and damaged and unhappy, but he doesn’t have the power to say “no” and kill her again. He would only be able to do that when securely backed by a Master who can remind him who and where he is, lest he slip into another unstable state and think that “oh, i just belong to her again, it’s fine, it’s okay”. She can very easily shut Alter down and make him revert back to how he was working for her, though with him being severely spotty and even worse off mentally than he is normally in terms of forgetfulness and loss of self.

Alter hates her but in a defeated “I’d Really Rather Not Deal With This, And Yet I Must” kind of way.

CONSEQUENCES

Because of his time with her, like I said, he’s super shitty at Kiara saving throws. She can command him very easily but this does have consequences on Alter’s mental and bodily integrity. If he’s pushed too far he will physically fall apart like this.

His PTSD comes mostly from everything to do with Kiara, which is entirely expected and unsurprising. So do his rather unhealthy attitudes about sex, as that’ll come when u end up in a cult headed by the incarnation of lust and also end up subject to all whims of anyone in said cult. He’s got a lotta issues with giving consent, mostly because he never thinks to say no to things even if he doesn’t want to do them, and ends up disassociating instead as seen here with Ritsuka. Being overtly sexual around Alter and pulling him into it is a good way to get him to dislike you because he Does Not Like It but also doesn’t think he’s allowed to refuse sexual overtures so. Y’know.

He also really hates being touched by strangers and if strangers touch him while also acting saccharine and “aw i care about you a lot uwu trust me” e.g. “act in any way similar to Kiara” he will immediately go on the offensive until he’s left alone or at least not being touched.

He just generally doesn’t trust anyone who acts charming or sweet, he’d much prefer people being direct, even if they’re directly telling him that they want to kill him.

again: He Wants To Kill Kiara. He’s just not good at doing that.

Part of this inspires his quest to destroy his saint graph. If he erases his identity, then he’s not the “Emiya” who contracted with Kiara, he’s just “nobody”, and if he’s not human then she can’t manipulate him and he can easily kill her if she ever returns as a threat. He’s removing his own ability to be beholden to her. She’s not all of why Alter wants to do this to himself, but she’s definitely a good part of it.

G’ROYHA TIA:

Royha is rather slow to anger, although his rather abrasive personality makes it oft seem otherwise. He has this uncanny manner that contradicts his words, as if his tongue and body fail to share a headspace. Where he’ll speak of cruelty, he’ll offer aid, but never vice versa. He is, all in all, a kind soul. 

As a witch hunter, Royha has sustained innumerable injuries, but none so egregious that his physical wellbeing was overly endangered. The most visible, however, is a long scar over his mouth, obtained through a witch’s last attempt at survival. She didn’t live long after that. Again, the last three are fairly simple. He’s punched a lot of people (with varying degrees of success), killed even more (the tallymarks of his prey remain on his skin in the form of scars, pencil-thin and evenly spaced), and continues to risk death with every hunt.

Hey there nonnie, I dig up an old essay I wrote about this for a different anon several months ago, and altered it a bit, hope it’s not gonna be too long for you. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Under read more, so I don’t clog everyone else’s dashes [mobile users have my sympathies].

Anyway, first and foremost, I’d like to state that I in no way want tocondemn any of the actions John did. Idk how much do you know about the gameor whether you possibly plan on giving it a go in the future so I won’t spoilyou, but being one of the antagonists, he did a lot of very crooky shit. I’mnot a person who would have to ignore a character’s flaws in order to like themand instead of being like ‘uh uh he’s a cinnamon roll who did nothing wrong andI love him uwu’ I’m more around the lines of ‘he did every single thing wrong, he fcked up real hard AND I love him’. [Might be because I’m a certifiedvillain stan, so…]

The thing with the antagonists - the Seed family - in this game is, thatthey are well written. Better than the majority of the good guys [but that’sjust my humble opinion; I found it hard to care for any of the members of theresistance fighting against the family, in fact I didn’t become attached to anysingle one of them, the villains seemed much more interesting to me]. They arenot your basic chaotic evil Bad Guys that want to do evil for the sake of doingevil, they have a purpose and they have goals, ultimately good goals that arebeing achieved by bad people. I have always been and always will be very weakfor villains who believe they are the heroes, either because they are manipulatedor unable to see the reality of their actions. This is not because I wouldultimately want to take a leap and call them innocent, because they wantedto do good, even though they used evil ways to achieve it. No, I’m not tryingto do anything like that. But it’s always refreshing to see a villain whoactually has some depth and isn’t just your basic psychotic killer that wantsto rule the world and wreak havoc etc.

John is exactly that type of a villain. I wasn’t very drawn to hischaracter on my first playthrough, I mean, sure, he’s handsome and my type always revolved around dark haired men with blue eyes and beards, but Ididn’t give much thought to his backstory. It was when I found out about himmore [mostly on the wiki and official sources like the novel that came out,because Ubisoft decided to not put more info about the Seeds in the games forsome reason, which is a thing I’m forever salty about, but that’s not what thisis about].

I think the scene where he captures the deputy - the protagonist - for the second time [the gamehas this habit of scripted kidnappings after you collect enough resistancepoints by pushing against the cult] was a breaking point for me. Like he opensup about his past [really just hints at it, like I mentioned, damn you Ubisoft,but still]. I know it sounds cliché, but I have a thing for villains withtragic past. John was beaten up by his foster family for any ‘sinful’ behaviorhe showed, up to the point he made up some things he did, as he was led tobelieve no one is really ‘innocent’, and not confessing to your sins only meansyou are hiding them. You can clearly see he’s still affected by this - in hisfirst scene, where Joseph, his older brother and the leader of the cult, callshim out on letting his anger take the hold of him. John’s expressionchanges from someone who just tried to half-drown the protagonist to a scaredboy that’s been yelled at in a matter of seconds. He knows he messed up very badly andas someone who was led to believe failings result in punishment, he expectsone, he almost looks like a scared child that’s aware of his bad behavior.

And that’s the other thing. John really believes in Joseph, and he thingshe’s doing the right thing. Until the end, he tries his hardest to convert thedeputy. Even if he has to twist their hand a little, using their friends fromthe resistance for example. He does this so ‘it might be easier if [the player]saw a friendly face’. He doesn’t try to just kill the protagonist, he wantsthem to make the decision to join the cult, to see his truth and admit Josephis right. He might force the decision on them, but he wants it to be theirs. Hewants the deputy to admit it themselves, that’s why he brings their friends tothe final mission where he tries to make them join the cult for the last time.

Joseph mentioned John used to be a caring and soft boy when younger, full ofcompassion and life. It’s easy to picture how everything would go without allthe cult business and the abuse John [and his brothers and sister] wentthrough. In no way such a past makes up for what he did, and I’m not trying tocondemn his actions or anything. I just really dig villains with depth andbackstories that actually make sense and can offer an explanation why they actlike they do now. Really, that’s what I like about John [and other Seeds, really]- I can relate to their past struggles, and I can easily understand why theyturned out this way. Not because I would try to justify their actions, it moreor less serves as a warning what might happen if people let their pastexperiences overtake them.

I don’t know, I dig villains with good sides, with positive traits that arehidden down under the negative ones. I dig villains that actually feel likepeople and are not meant to just be the Bad Guys. Finally, I dig villains thatdon’t see themselves as evil, and actually deeply believe that what they do isright. And of course, this is just my own interpretation, but I like to believethere’s a more human, kinder side to him still.
