Extracting audio sequences

We'll be using piki-tools for its dedicated Pikmin 1 support. It offers a BARC tool for extracting pikiseq.arc - but first, we'll need a HED file to pair with it. Download one or extract it yourself from the sys/main.dol file. It starts with "BARC----" and ends shortly after "result.jam".

Contrary to the README we won't install piki-tools executables through pip - instead, we'll just run them from source. First, move the executables (e.g piki_barc) to the repo root (i.e. from piki-root/piki-root -> piki-root). Now, place your HED and ARC pair in the same directory and run:

"C:\Program Files\Python\Python313\python.exe" piki_barc.py EXTRACT "F:\Pikmin GC dump\files\dataDir\SndData\Seqs\pikiseq.hed"

This gives us a collection of JAM files, also known as BMS files.

Playing audio sequences

We'll use the unreleased JaiSeqX for its Pikmin 1 support.

Before running JaiSeqX.exe, copy Pikmin's Banks folder from SndData to the same directory as JAISeqX.exe, and run something like:

Extracting audio samples

Use XAYRGA's toolkit for Pikmin 1. Extract the archive into Pikmin's "SndData" and run _jamt_initialize.bat. The AW soundbanks will be unpacked into the Audio_Modding\SoundEffects\wav folder.

Appendix 0: Capturing footage

This should be possible using Dolphin's free look mode, with either the GC or Wii versions, albeit with some drawbacks on screen-space effects. There is also Heebo's free camera hack for the Switch version running on emulator. For a weirder solution we can run Pikmin 1^2 and PikHacker's freecam Gecko code. To skip levels on the Wii release, we can re-enable debug mode using a patch.

Appendix 1: Other extraction tools

BrawlCrate can supposedly explore ARC and BARC but I couldn't get it working for Pikmin 1. I had no luck with LunaBoy's RARC tool, either.

Appendix 2: STX files

These are AFCs and can be played with vgmstream.

Appendix 3: H4M files

You can extract these with h4m_audio_decode.

NOTE: The version I played was v1.0.0, updating v1.0.1 for vital hotfixes roughly halfway through my playthrough; since then, newer updates have fixed a number of major issues I ran into, so I won't harp on those here.

Super Mario Sunshine, while an undeniably uneven experience, has always been one of my favorite games for its unique platforming mechanics, intricate setting, and immaculate vibes. It's divisive, to be sure, but for those who appreciate the game's merits like I do, Super Mario Eclipse adds engaging new layers and quality-of-life improvements to the base game while massively expanding it with a full sequel's worth of new, mostly high-quality content.

The setting of Isle Delfino is now completely interconnected, with new traversable routes between adjacent levels and smaller connecting areas dotted throughout the island. To further facilitate exploration, many of the Shine Sprites now no longer kick you out of a level upon collection, though the developers (smartly, in my opinion) left ones which are integral to a level's overarching narrative untouched (presumably to retain the original's sense of progression as you steadily improve the living conditions of the island's inhabitants).

The plethora of brand new levels (many of which reimagine elements speculated to have been scrapped from the original game), with a few exceptions, are generally well-designed, if a bit rough around the edges, and hide plenty of satisfying secrets to uncover. The new music tracks are also spectacular, with catchy, scenic, and even emotionally moving themes that easily hold up alongside Nintendo's official OST.

I was worried the new movement abilities would trivialize the original game's level design to a point where it would no longer feel satisfying, but to my surprise, I found that it actually enhanced the experience significantly, adding new angles from which to tackle situations while still requiring solid execution to take advantage of them. The implementation of the new playable characters, on the other hand, I'm not really a fan of. Luigi in particular is simply a better version of Mario; unless you're doing a self-imposed challenge run, there's practically no reason not to use him once he's unlocked after the base Bowser encounter. He's neat as a postgame bonus, but I feel that a bit more give-and-take in his functionality would make the choice between him and Mario more engaging.

I have a lot more to say about this mod (to the point where I might make an entire video about it once more of its planned updates are out), but in a nutshell:

While can't quite say that Eclipse fixes all of the issues folks tend to have with the original game, all in all, if Super Mario Sunshine IS your cup of tea, you're likely to get a ton of enjoyment out of this. I was certainly grinning ear-to-ear throughout the majority of my playthrough.

okey so i've figured out why green hud has mild issues with cornbread's texture fixer. the good news: it's super easy to fix. the bad news: the issue is with texture fixer.

for context, currently, with green hud v1.0.1 (default subpack) over cornbread's texture fixer v0.5.0, certain icons in the dressing room will turn green when their buttons are hovered over. i didn't notice the icons getting tinted because with cornbread's texture fixer over vanilla, the icons are tinted white, so they just look normal.

i've managed to make it so that this issue doesn't happen with just green hud, but the green hud + texture fixer combo is still broken.

it's not a big enough deal for me to release a hotfix, but it is a compatibility issue, which i don't want, and will be fixed sometime before texture fixer's full release, whenever that is. green hud's default subpack is already buggy as shit so it's probably fine for now.
