Family ties Vanessa

Vanessa was blessed with good loving parents who always tried to do what was best for her, and a safe stable home. Her dad was a locksmith and her mother was a carpenter so she knows a lot about household repairs and how to get around locking your keys in the house or car. She’s got a good sense of right and wrong and a big heart. And she also knows her own worth and had a pretty stable sense of self confidence, albeit Shocker did a number on it and she’s still trying to recover from that.

On top of this she had an older cousin, Sammie, who would probably do anything for her. He taught her how to work with clay, and was always there when she needed him. He himself didn’t have a great home life, and he never let her come to his house because of that, but he tried not to let it affect Vanessa. Which for most of his life wasn’t hard because Vanessa’s dad didn’t want Sammie’s mom anywhere near his house any more than Sammie did. Vanessa could still kinda of tell that something was always off with Sammie though. But she was little and abuse had always seemed more of an abstract concept than something that could happen in her family, maybe other people, but her family wouldn’t let that slide, wouldn’t let a kid hurt like that. If Sammie was in a bad situation her parents would find out and help, so she didn’t question it much. She had no clue her parents were literally saving up to take Sammie’s mom to court for custody rights over him.

When Vanessa was a preteen though, Sammie’s mom started trying to come over whenever Sammie did, and she learned the hard way that no family is too nice to have bad people. She’d wait until Vanessa’s parents were at work to try to show up, her parents ended up installing a security system and making sure all the doors and windows were locked if her and Sammie were going to be in the house alone. Sammie stopped being allowed come over by his mom after a while of this, and Vanessa after a while stopped seeing him altogether. Which is hard to manage by the way, they lived in Death, which is a tiny ^ss(fictional) town.

One day Sammie ended up attacking another teen for throwing a beer bottle at him and making some remarks about his home life. Not long after Sammie just vanished. And nobody but Vanessa and her parents seemed to care. She decided if nobody else would, she’d look into what happened.

And she found out about Willow Lab, and how much of Death was connected to it, and what probably happened to Sammie. And she wanted to tell people, obviously, because her cousin wasn’t a lone victim of this sort of thing, and something had to be done.

But the lab got to her first.

And she spent years in there, and when she found out Sammie had in fact been there she found out he had escaped, and had hope. And when she escaped and went to look for him she found a grave, he’d been killed on the side of the road, shot in the back of the head in plain daylight and nobody had seen a thing. And her parents were dead too. Her aunt, Sammie’s mom, was the only family she had left and that woman hadn’t changed one bit.

She didn’t miss Death when she left. She missed her family. She missed her dad reaching her how to pick locks and her mom explaining how to fix a stripped screw, she missed them playing video games with her and eating dinner together and singing in the car and she missed them writing down plans in notebooks. She missed Sammie teaching her shortcuts in Mario kart wii, she missed him teaching her ways to sculpt and talking his teachers into letting her bake her pieces in the school kiln, she missed him bringing her to the corner store and buying her Yoo-Hoo, and when she asked why he’d go “So if you ever miss me you can get one and it’ll be like I’m still there.” She still loves Yoo-Hoo, she still uses notebooks to make plans. She still sculpts and she still knows how to fix most things around the house herself.

She doesn’t trust that families that look good are good anymore. She doesn’t just stand by when it seems like someone is hurting. She’ll fight like a dog to get someone out of a bad situation if she thinks she has any chance of being able to.

What happened to her family was horrible, and she misses them everyday, but she can’t change what happened. She hopes she can keep herself from losing more people the same way, however.

<p>We've all heard it before: Sugar isn't that great for you. Having a lot of added sugars in your diet can wreak havoc on your body if you're not careful. However, does that mean we can't indulge in a sweet treat once in a blue moon? Is it really bad for your body when you eat dessert?</p> <p>In order to settle this hot topic, we consulted four different registered dietitians on the matter. Surprisingly, their opinions on the matter were unanimous: Dessert is fine—in moderation. Here's what they had to say, and how eating dessert often will affect your body if you're not careful.</p> <figure><img src="https://ift.tt/2Xdm2XI" alt="grilled dessert" /><figcaption>Shutterstock</figcaption></figure><p>While it may seem counter-intuitive, having a dessert on the regular can actually help you stay on track with your overall weight loss goals. The key is to portion out your dessert, and have it fit in with your set weight loss goals. It's also important to be eating a diet mostly filled with good nutrients.</p> <p>"I think if you're making sure [your] diet is varied and that you're not binging sleeves of Oreo cookies, then you're likely okay," says Vanessa Rissetto MS, RD, CDN and co-founder of Culina Health. "If you're ingesting 600 calories of chocolate every night, then we might first need to work on behavioral modifications and maybe only having a dessert 1-2 [times] per week."</p> <p>Risetto recommends adding in at least three cups of vegetables, 25-30 grams of fiber, one serving of fruit, and a good amount of water. This will satiate your body and help prevent you from overeating your dessert.</p> <p>"How you fit dessert into your life, be it a little each day or one big dessert a week, is really about preference," says Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD. "The key is making sure you include it in a nutrient-rich diet and allow for it in total caloric intake."</p> <p>"Portion and ingredients matter," says Toby Smithson, MS, RDN, LD, CDCES, FAND, Diabetes Lifestyle Expert, author of Diabetes Meal Planning and Nutrition for Dummies and founder of familycuisine.net. "Moderation is key which can be done by balancing your food intake to fit in a favorite dessert. It's important to look at the science when making recommendations. In this case, consider the dietary guidelines as our foundation. The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommends that only 6% of energy intake come from added sugars in our eating plan. Most desserts will fall into the added sugar category."</p> <figure><img src="https://ift.tt/3vbzh7K" alt="stepping onto a scale" /><figcaption>i yunmai/Unsplash</figcaption></figure><p>Without portioning out your dessert, you can easily overeat based on the allotted calories that your body can handle.</p> <p>"Dessert foods often pack in a lot of calories per a small volume," Rachel Paul, PhD, RD from familycuisine.net. "For example, 1 cup of regular ice cream is about 350 calories. If a person is maintaining their weight at 1700 calories, one extra bowl of ice cream, especially over time, can easily lead to weight gain."</p> <p>"It is important to note that if you eat more calories than what you need, in dessert or any food, that can result in weight gain," says Goodson.</p> <p>Curious about how many calories you should have for your body? Here's how to calculate it.</p> <figure><img src="https://ift.tt/3vbTydD" alt="eating dessert" /><figcaption>Shutterstock</figcaption></figure><p>Spikes in blood sugar are a result of high levels of glucose in the bloodstream. Because glucose is a sugar commonly found in desserts, having too much of it can easily cause spikes in blood sugar levels.</p> <p>However, it is not ultimately bad to have glucose. According to Healthline, glucose is "the primary fuel that makes your muscles, organs, and brain work properly." This happens when glucose enters your cells, which is what insulin does in your body. This is why diabetics struggle with blood sugar spikes, because the body either doesn't produce much insulin (Type 1) or your body simply can't process blood sugar properly (Type 2).</p> <p>"Eating more sweets will not cause diabetes, but, if you are already having insulin resistance or diagnosed with pre or type 2 diabetes, sweet desserts can play havoc with your blood sugar readings," says Smithson. "Also, if you have metabolic syndrome or elevated triglycerides, sweet desserts will affect your health outcomes."</p> <p>This is why it's important to have it in moderation. Goodson recommends the 80/20 Rule when it comes to enjoying dessert. "I always encourage people to live by the 80/20 Rule, meaning that 80% of the time you focus on eating nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, lean protein and healthy fats, and then 20% of the time you can enjoy foods that are lower in nutrients and higher in added sugars and saturated fats, aka where dessert falls."</p> <figure><img src="https://ift.tt/3BE8DXH" alt="moody" /><figcaption>Shutterstock</figcaption></figure><p>Sugar can actually play a significant role in a person's everyday mood. One study published by Cambridge University Press states that high consumption of processed foods will increase a person's odds of experiencing depression. Sugar is also linked to inflammation, which along with increased levels of depression, can cause loss of appetite, changes in sleep patterns, and heightened perceptions of pain. If consumers are not careful about portioning out the amount of added sugars and processed carbs they consume, they will likely experience changes in mood and issues caused by inflammation.</p> <figure><img src="https://ift.tt/3aCA8oD" alt="eating apple dessert" /><figcaption>Shutterstock</figcaption></figure><p>Clearly having a portioned out dessert will not wreak havoc on your body, according to research and the recommendations from these registered dietitians. If you decide you do want to include dessert every day, Paul says it clearly: Count the calories.</p> <p>"A good idea is to track what you're eating for a few days and see which foods—including dessert—are worthwhile to you from nutrition, satisfaction, and taste standpoints," says Paul. "No food is 'good' or 'bad'—different foods are just more worth it to different people. Laurent Troost turns abandoned Brazilian building into co-working venue

Workspaces look upon a mini jungle in this 125-year-old brick building in Manaus, Brazil, which has been thoughtfully revitalised by design studio Laurent Troost Architectures.

Called the Cassina Innovation House, the project entailed the adaptive reuse of a dilapidated historic structure in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas.

The building, which now serves as a co-working venue, is located in an emerging digital district within the city. Its name was selected through a public vote organized by the municipality, which owns the building.

Its original structure was constructed in the late 1890s to house the luxurious Hotel Cassina, owned by an Italian man named Andrea Cassina.

The building was abandoned and taken over by vegetation

After a financial crisis devastated the region, the building became a spot for gambling and prostitution called Cabaré Chinelo.

It closed around 1960 and began to deteriorate, according to local firm Laurent Troost Architectures.

Over the decades, the interior crumbled and vegetation overtook the building, resulting in a striking visual image that the architect wanted to honour in some way.

Troost said that artists and designers have long been intrigued by ruins, citing figures such as Piranesi, Gordon Matts-Clark and Robert Smithson.

"The beauty of the ruin's imperfection raises interest and questions, and invites reflection on the past and the action of time and man in the city – and on heritage buildings in general," the architect said.

The team opted to preserve the building's exterior brick walls, along with the remaining foundation walls made of stone. It decided to reconstruct the interior using a prefabricated steel system, and to add a glazed volume atop the roof.

The staircase is open to the sky

The building now totals 1,586 square metres, spread across four levels.

The facades were cleaned, and great care was taken to preserve original elements such as a plaster made of pigment from red sandstone powder. On the eastern elevation, new shading devices help mitigate solar heat gain.

"The east facade, hit by the rising sun, has received contemporary frames with tempered glass fins to create a ventilated, double-skin facade that keeps the heat out," the studio said.

Glazed walls overlook the gardens

Inside, the team used the steel system to form new floors and a stairwell, along with space for an elevator. The system stands independent from the building's outer shell.

"We have basically constructed a squared tower with four new columns," Troost told Dezeen. "The perimeter beams of our structure have allowed us to anchor the existing facades to avoid the collapse towards the street."

There are a variety of co-working spaces available

The metal system was prefabricated off-site, which sped up the project timeline.

Moreover, it reduced the number of on-site construction workers, which helped with social distancing – an important factor given that Manaus was hit hard by the coronavirus, the studio said.

Greenery is visible through areas of glazing

A tropical garden was planted in a triple-height space just inside the front door.

"The building houses an exuberant garden behind the main facade, creating its very own microclimate," the team said. "A walkway crosses the void over the garden, reminding one of Manaus's intrinsic reason for being: the Amazon rainforest."

There are desks and meeting rooms in the offices

Adjoining the stairs are open rooms with glazed walls that provide views of the interior garden. A range of flexible spaces can be found within the building, including work zones, meeting rooms and training areas.

The rooftop addition holds a restaurant with sweeping views of the city's historic centre and the Rio Negro. Large roof overhangs clad in ipe wood – also known as Brazilian walnut – help shade the structure.

The team noted that the building's design allows for physical distancing and the circulation of fresh air, which will remain important considerations in our post-pandemic world.

Born in Brussels, Laurent Troost has worked in various countries and taught at several Brazilian universities.

Other projects by his studio include Casa Campinarana in Manaus, which won a 2019 Dezeen Award for Rural House of the Year. The concrete house features outdoor living areas and a swimming pool that are elevated above the forested surroundings.

Was tagged by @thelighthousesbeacon for the jar of fears meme! I choose to do it for Vanessa/Shade. I may do it for a few other characters but she’s who I chose to do first. Gonna explain why it’s so all or nothing under the read more.

So Vanessa’s powers came from experiments regarding the combining of different souls to create super humans.

Vanessa’s soul was spliced with part of a shadow demon and part of a shadow creature.

Shadow demons are humans turned demons, known for being extremely weak, and honestly the name is mostly based on appearance as they look like they’re formed entirely of shadow. Vanessa does have some enhanced strength and stamina from this, but that’s about it.

Shadow creatures on the other hand are otherworldly entities that are known for their prowess in battle and ability to summon dark weapons or armor when in danger. The thing they’re able to summon is essentially their soul turned outward to protect them, and a shadow creature’s summoned object is said to be representative of them as a person. This is where Vanessa’s ability to manipulate shadow as a physical entity comes from.

So when you introduce a shadow creature soul to something that. Isn’t a shadow creature. The effects can be pretty brutal, because suddenly this thing that has been hardwired to protect itself it’s entire existence can’t properly register how to manifest, what is and isn’t ‘itself’, what’s a threat, etc.

So for a long time, whenever Vanessa was upset, her powers basically attacked her. Before she learned how to control this and manifest the powers in a less self destructive way, something the lab was no help with, she almost died several times.

So anything she’s more than just slightly afraid of also has the added fear of it causing her to lose control of her abilities, which could turn an already bad situation deadly.

For this holiday-season exhibition, gallery owner Jennifer Schlesinger asked the photographers she represents and a handful of guest artists to create work that would be exclusive to Obscura Gallery. Some created a single photography-based piece of art while others created a new print edition solely for the gallery. Participating photographers reside in the United States, Israel, Cuba, and France. Artists include Kurt Markus, Lawrence Fodor, and Caitlyn Soldan of Santa Fe, Aline Smithson of Los Angeles, Louviere + Vanessa from New Orleans, and Coco Fronsac of Paris. All manner of photographic processes are used in the work exhibited at Obscura.

The new vigilante held her staff as she walked through alleys, obscured by shadows. Sure Oscar had told her not to go out doing this stuff on her own yet. She was still a kid. It was dangerous. But she could hold her own, it wasn’t like she was fighting other people with powers, just the occasional thug. She didn’t need help, she wasn’t 12.

‘Yeah but these people aren’t 12 either, Ness, you need to be careful.’

Wow. Replica had really said that so often she was saying it to herself now. At that thought of the criminal she stopped for a moment, she wondered how he was doing… him and Shocker never did get along. She shook her head, she was here to do a job, not reminisce about her old coworkers.

“So what do you want to do?” Vanessa looked over at her new roommate, she didn’t get why Shocker was the guy who got his own room, but she was just glad to be out.

“What..?” Replica looked at her like she had two heads, he was a bit above average height, his hair was shaved, and dyed red, and his eyes were a glowing blue. She had the suspicion he’d never been outside of the lab somehow.

“You know? Now that we’re free? What do you wanna do for the future?” Vanessa asked, sitting at the edge of her bed. Replica moved to sit up, shrugging.

“Don’t got a future.”

“Oh come on don’t be like that. Everybody’s got a future, what do you want to do?” She asked.

“… I don’t know? Why are we talking about this?”

“I’m trying to get to know you. Just-what would make you happy?”

“… making other people happy I guess? Giving uh-making them want to keep going.” Replica paused, not looking at her before continuing, “One of the scientists gave me a poetry book once. I want to use something like that to do it.”

“That’s so cool!” Vanessa grinned, now she was getting somewhere, “I wanna be a sculptor, I know how to do some pretty cool stuff.”

“What’s a sculptor?” Replica was now paying more attention, seeming very intrigued.

“Well- it’s a type of artist, they use stuff like clay or stone or metal or other media to make 3D art.” She explained.

“Maybe uh-maybe we can make poetry and… sculpting, would it be called that?”

“Sculptures, but the action is sculpting.”

“Maybe we can make stuff that correlates or something-that sounds cool.”

The two ended up talking through most of the night, at one point Vanessa grabbed a notebook, writing down their plans. Beyond jobs, Rep wanted a dog, and Vanessa wanted to live in a house or apartment with a balcony. The two felt closer by the end of the night, not two strangers sharing a room, but friends.
