Inktober52 - Week 3 - Shadow Comment Below - What's the first thought that pops into your head when you see an object cast more than one shadow? If you thought, 'more than one light source', there's not much of a point in reading further. I thank you for your time, your 'like' (& comment, hopefully) and bid you farewell. Buuuuuuut - if you thought 'Vashta Nerada', hello, there, fellow Whovian. Pleasure to have made your acquaintance! Doctor Who, at least in its earlier seasons, didn't take itself too seriously and not many episodes had a terror factor to them. Remember Cassandra, that b!tchy trampoline? Or the pilot episode with the ridiculous mannequins? The first truly terrifying DW episode was, for me, the Silence in the Library. The Vashta Nerada are the scariest DW villains, the Weeping Angels a close second. Anywho, after watching said episode, I had recurrent nightmares with the exact image above (sometimes still do), avoided stepping on shadows and I still do a double take whenever I see an object cast more than one shadow. The military fic the anon is looking for is Hold Onto Your Stars by vashtaneradas. It has the scene anon mentions, where army officers come to Louis’ apartment with bad news about Harry while Zayn is there hanging out. Harry is in the British army and deployed in Afghanistan, and Zayn and Louis are friends because Zayn’s boyfriend Liam is deployed with Harry. It’s an excellent fic, very powerful. I hope it’s ok to mention — spoiler alert — there’s no major character death. It’s from 2013 and, as was pretty common then, there are basically no tags, so I can imagine skipping it out of fear for that kind of outcome (I personally can’t handle MCD). While it put me through the emotional ringer, it was definitely worth it and ended in a good place.

Thank you, darling. I love that author. I know I’ve read that one, but I must have forgotten to bookmark it. And thank you for the spoiler alert.

Hello 🌸 it took me ages to reply to this, because I don’t read canon compliant fics, but I checked my history on AO3 and I wasn’t disappointed. I hope you’ll find some new fics you haven’t read yet! As always, read the tags and let me know if you liked them <3 here it comes

Canon compliant fics

To the ends of the earth by stylinsoncity (68K): the Idaho fic! a classic, iconic fic. The band is on a hiatus, Harry and Louis have not been in touch for a long time. Niall set them up and they are forced to meet again.

Given a chance by Fabby (173K): Louis and Harry run into each other five years after One Direction ends and learn how to love each other again.

And then a bit by infinitelymint (@infinitelymint)(158K): canon compliant-ish, but with fake relationship trope (one of my favourite).

Burn to ash by bethaboo (116K): Or the fic where Harry spirals out of control, the band breaks up, and then he shows back up, five years later.

You’ve got my devotion (Hate you sometimes) by lucythegoosey (95K): almost five years on, after One Direction has broken up, and Harry and Louis are forced to fake-date after an old video from when they were dating emerges. Massive publicity stunt and two begrudging exes are all it takes to bring One Direction back and maybe, Harry and Louis too.

Hold a hand for cover by vashtaneradas (26K): two years after the band, harry and louis bump into each other for the first time.

One More time by orphan_account (232K): kinda canon compliant I guess. On the morning of his second sold-out performance at Madison Square Garden, Harry wakes up to find that he's sixteen years old, on The X Factor, and that he has a chance to make things right’.

Here to take my medicine by lightsforlouis (9K): this story finds inspiration in the absolutely iconic performance of Medicine in Saint Paul. A story about sparkling suits, VIP box silhouettes, a bit of obscene dancing and most importantly, what happens when the stage lights go out and it’s only them.

Such a pretty face, on a pretty neck by subrrystyles (6K): hot as fire. Harry wears his collar for a magazine photoshoot, and Louis finds out.

I wanna see the way you move for me by therogueskimo (6K): biiiiit filthy. … or the one where Louis gets more than he bargained for after his all black ensemble in Minneapolis.

Daylight by killmymindlarry (5K): Harry misses Louis when he's gone.

Fake smile by daffodilwine (3K): the canon fic about the time Harry begged for 20 minutes to keep his lipstick on for Jimmy Kimmel and they didn't let him.

Unfortunately (sob!), I think this was the last fic of hers I hadn’t yet gotten around to reading. I’ve put it in a dual category because although Lilo is the first listed relationship, the Zarry is in no way background.

Quite the Pickle - lululawrence - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @lululawrence - NR, 1k, 2023 - AU, mpreg, meet cute, crack. I’ll read anything Sus writes and new Stylinshaw?! Double win. This is so sweet and funny but also I’m 100% with Harry here, pickles are delicious.

Maid in the A.M. - Lainy122 - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] - E, 9k, 2015 - AU, famous/non-famous, cleaner Louis. This one is a lot of fun - I love the humour :D

Once The Dark Divides - zanni_scaramouche - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @zanniscaramouche - E, 14k, 2023 - kink exploration, friends to lovers, AU. Okayyyyy. Hot. Haha, I was tempted to leave it there but this fic is so well-written, and the relationship and bond between Harry and Louis and how it mutates throughout the extended scene is just great. 

Cool Cats - FallingLikeThis - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @fallinglikethis - 2018, T, 16k - Louis/Marcel, high school AU, hybrids, D&D. This fic is adorable, Marcel is adorable, his tail especially is completely adorable.

like a bastard on the burning sea - vashtaneradas - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] - NR, 22k, 2013 - infidelity, angst, AU. I think almost everyone in the fandom will have read this, but if you’ve been putting it off it’s time to get around to it. It hurts, but it’s beautifully written and if you’re in the right mindset it’s a wonderful read.

all this devotion - princelouisau - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @princelouisau - E, 38k, 2022 - omegaverse, fake relationship, friends to lovers. I’m such a sucker for pining/platonic sex tropes and this fic has them in spades! 

yeah, he's a looker (but i really think it's guts that matter most) - devilinmybrain (venomedveins) - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @thedevilinmybrain - E, 40k, 2022 - outsider (Oli) POV, canon, friendship. Honestly, I completely loved this. So intricate, so well written, so realistic - it tugs at the heartstrings and sweeps you up into it entirely.
