Well you think of a small fregate with about 200 men, a surgeon there had not only to deal with the everyday ailments and illnesses, but also with those a sailor could get in various ports. The talk is about venereal diseases. Don't worry, I don't have a rambling discourse here now with all kinds of pictures (there are many pronographic caricatures from the 18th and 19th century which I will not show because of tumblr). This is just a short post to understand how to deal with something like that on board and maybe the whole thing is a bit exhilarating.

Now you have to know that when it comes to diseases on board it was regulated by a decree of 1658 introduced by a Dutchman that a surgeon may not take money for his treatment if the disease was acquired on board. Well that means that everything that came from outside could be charged. And depending on the surgeon this could be expensive. Especially when it comes to such nice diseases as syphilis. The consequence of this was of course that they either tried to treat themselves by injecting tobacco into their “members” or in the “ass”, which was usually unsuccessful, or delayed a visit to the sickbay as long as possible. Mostly with unpleasant consequences for the affected person. This changed only under Thomas Trotter, a naval surgeon who from 1793 on enforced that even such treatments had to be free of charge if one wanted a halfway useful crew. But it happened again and again that a surgeon demanded a fee for his services even if it was forbidden.

For a long time it was even known that there were different illnesses and therefore everyone was treated equally. Different herbs were used but also solutions of silver and mercury were injected into the “member”. It could also be applied as an ointment or inhaled. This usually resulted in the patient dying of mercury poisoning because he had simply received too much. If the patient survived the syphilis or gonorrhoea in the first place, these diseases often caught up with him and led to permanent damage and further spread.

However, there were also attempts to reduce the risk of the disease. When it was time to go ashore, some ships had the so-called "cock patrol", i.e. pants down, and if you didn't have any signs of infection, you were lucky that everyone else was treated equally to stop some possible spread.

There were also captains who refused their men the shore leave. But there was always a lot of traffic in the harbours and among them also whores who were brought to the ships.Some of the captains were simply powerless, in the fact of this sheer flood of women and let them on board, but the women had to clean themselves with vinegar and only one had to be slept with. As if that would bring something.... Or only wives were allowed on board. Well, then the whore was quickly made to a wife and then she was also on board to disappear later again. Rabid (1977) When a young girl is involved in a bike accident, she goes into surgery for skin grafts. However the side effects will leave her with some strange cravings. I like David Cronenberg films, they’re off the cuff, crazy, and a little bit out there and this is no different. The film has some great moments, some brilliant effects and a pretty well paced storyline... to a degree. The problem I have with Rabid is that there’s not really a start or an end. I still have various questions I feel never got answered and the ending is also very vague. Living in the time we do now however with Covid-19, let’s just take a moment to be glad it wasn’t this viral disease! The sound director/editor in this also must have made the easiest money he’s ever made in his/her life! The score is pretty much made up of 2 pieces that are cut and placed all the way throughout in various ways and lengths. Not to say it doesn’t work, but after the 5th time it gets all too familiar! The presentation from @arrowvideo is great, I felt it a little grainy at the start but it soon sorted itself out by about 5 minutes. The film is dual-format and comes on Blu Ray and DVD with a collectors booklet! Reading the booklet provides valuable information in cultural affairs around the time of the film and helps give a deeper understanding of surrounding areas. Overall, Rabid is a film that is inventive and consistent. It offers some great ideas, and is a chaotic epidemic story. It falls short in delving deeper into its story, but it’s a fun watch!
