Beyond the Gates Recap: Week 1
Week 1 of my new favorite show was a wonderful introduction! From the moment Nicole pulled her car up to those gates, I knew we were in for a treat! I really enjoyed that opening scene; I've repeated it several times.
Tumblr media
First thing I came to understand about this show; this is a "show-don't-tell" production. This philosophy totally applies to sets and character wardrobe. So far,my award for best dressed is going to Chelsea. Cue the fashion show!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Typically a lot of viewers complain during the first few episodes of a new show. As they are introduced to characters by means that aren't always appealing. While there was some exposition, but it ended quickly enough that I wasn't bothered.
After the show emphasizes to us the wealth of the Duprees, then they show their power. Ad said by hot-shot realtor Vanessa McBride to Dani Dupree "your family rules this community. Your grandfather built it." There is no family more important in Fairmout Crest, than the Duprees.
I enjoy the Dupree's familiarity with the town they rule over. They have personal relationships with many staff and neighbors. Let's kick things off!
In episode one, we meet most of the main cast. We also find out a large part of the reason we are all gathered here today; to watch the unraveling of Dani Dupree. We discover from Vanessa McBride (Fairmount Crest's highest paid realator) that Dani's cheating ex and child bride have just purchased a home in the area. In addition, they plan to marry amongst the community, at Dani's family's country club no less!
Dani is pissed (rightfully so) and ready to start a fire!
" I am Done being disrespected!" Dani declares as the child bride (Hayley) enters the country club. And she grants her a wonderful welcome to the communtiy!

The Child Bride: Hayley Hamilton: conniving gold-digger or amazing dumbass? I don't know, and neither does the show. Why she'd lie about her pregnancy, I have no clue, and neither her nor Dani should be engaging in this stupid catfight. I'm still not over Dani playing Pick-Me Wifey over a guy who cheated long before divorcing her??? Grow a spine. Speaking of, I'd mention her potential alcoholism, but that got dropped, so why bother.
Daughter(s) Dullest: Have Naomi and Chelsea done anything productive? What was the point of the June story w/ Jacob? Will Naomi ever be GOOD and COMPETENT as a lawyer? Will Chelsea ever get a real love interest or friends or a story? The world may never know.
Tide-y & Febreze-y: Nicole Richardson is my girl, and rather than letting her be the center of the Ted/Leslie conundrum, she's advertising cleaning products instead. It's a waste of my and the actress's time. Let the queen psychiatrist flourish and kick a bitch's teeth in. But God forbid we subplant the side piece, I guess.
KitKat Brat: Whether it's her clashing patterns or her stuck-up attitude, Kat is not the girl the show pushes her to be. Jumping to conclusions, being incredibly classist, and making her make that wooden lawyer work is just dumb all around. No, she doesn't need to like Eva, but she could STFU about it for once.
Worn-Out Wigwoman: Leslie can go. She's served her purpose. Ted doesn't want her, Eva is turning against her, she has no friends, why is she still here? Because she's "funny"? So what? She outed Ted as a cheater; she served her purpose.
Dr. Ryan Armstrong: I don't care for Vanessa, I don't care for Doug, I don't care for Dr. Collins with an "edge," and I don't care for this gambling story. You could axe them and this plot from the show tomorrow and nothing of value would be lost.
Trashley: Whoever said we needed another Josslyn Jacks but "nice" this time should be shot into the sun. What a waste of screentime this bitch is. Her pairing with Derek sucks, her potential with Andre sucks, SHE SUCKS. Why this show devotes so much time and effort to a vapid waste of space I will never understand, and everyone frothing at the mouth about how good and wonderful and perfect she is won't make it so. Enough.
Boremás: Eva and Kat propping this bum is a travesty. Get rid of him. Give both women better partners. Tajh Bellow, Evan Hofer, any free agent young adult actors, we need you badly!
Articuletting: Sure, suicide hasn't really been talked about on soaps, but making the story revolve around the sole reason being Anita going solo, when other girl groups of the time didn't fractuce quite as badly, isn't a great choice. Bonus points if you expect me to sympathize with ANITA after making it clear that she was the villain according to both her and her ex-bandmates. You know, besides that garbage producer. Also, can she ever have scenes where Vernon is ABSENT? Why is she stuck to his hip while he gets to galavant around and scold his relatives for their dumb decisions (hi Martin)?
Congressman Curmudgeon: If he's not being shitty to Smitty, then he's doing nothing, I guess. I assume the secret with Martin is that he killed his mentor or the guy in the seat he eventually took over, with the intentionality of it to be determined. We need to get that out in the open or else it'll lose steam. Also, for all the whining the Duprees do about Bill dumping Dani, they clearly had no problem using him to cover their asses. Can't have it both ways, morons.
Misc: Someone write Tyrell and Samantha like they're human beings with human dialogue, please. What's the point of Ted now - is he all about Eva or is he trying to fix his marriage? Keep Dandre as the hot hookup couple. Someone said having everyone come on as married was a bad move, and they're right; this show does more telling than showing and that's not how it works. Fix it.

Beyond the Gates: Character Impressions
I'm into week 2 of CBS new powerhouse soap, Beyond the Gates, and wanted to do a little write up of how I feel about each character!
Vernon Dupree - Initially I liked you, the family patriarch, but the way you used the Dupree power to (initially) have the police write off Dani's bad conduct at Bill & Hayley's wedding kinda turned me off. Dropping to the investigating officer at the wedding shoot out that you play golf with the Chief of Police to smooth things over is gross - be better.
Anita Dupree - The family matriarch is probably my FAVORITE Dupree. She doesn't take any noise - even from Dani! She stands up for what is right and makes sure her voice is heard and she has common sense. She also has a fashion sense that is fire 🔥🔥.
Dani (Ex-Hamilton) Dupree - Oh, Dani. Dani, Dani, Dani...I both adore you and want to strangle you. Drawing a gun at your ex-husband's wedding was bonkers and trying to walk off like it was no big deal doubly so. But I also understand why you're so hurt and upset and your hook ups with Andre are solid gold. You just need to get over Bill, but after the most recent episode (3/10/25) I think we're STILL a long way off from that.
Bill Hamilton - You're trash and you know you're trash. You don't deserve Dani, you don't deserve Hayley, you don't deserve anything to be honest. You know whatever it is Martin did and gleefully use it to torture Vernon and Anita and make them dance to your tune. You forced Dani to quit modeling to be your wife and now you're trying to get Hayley to quit her job to be your wife. You torment your daughters on top of all that. You're my second least favorite character.
Naomi (Hamilton) Hawthorne - It's hard to like you? Mainly because of how you treated your husband on the latest episode. Jacob was just doing his job. I agree, he probably should have warned you, but still. You're so uncompromising. I'm hoping your character is improved as we go on.
Jacob Hawthorne - You are a good sweet boy. You do your best to do a terrible job (police officer) and deal with a wild family. I love you.
Chelsea Hamilton - GIRL. You are WILD! A lover of threesomes? A model trying to sell purses? A girl who accidently livestreams her Mom pulling a gun out at her ex-husband's wedding? I adore you! Never feel bad, dear girl.
Hayley (Lawson) Hamilton - Okay, listen, hear me out. I feel bad for her. Don't get me wrong - she royally fucked up. She hooked up with her best friend's (Naomi) dad and hurt a whole lot of people. But I have a hard time not believing she was gaslit/groomed into it somehow. I also feel like Bill is going to screw her over just like he screws over everyone else. He's going to try and make her give up agency just so she can be his wife. She needs to run. Also - and this is just a sidebar - sometimes she have dem boobies on display like a pair of baked bread loaves and I'll be honest, I'm here for it.
Nicole (Dupree) Richardson - My second favorite Dupree character who occasionally battles her mother for my favorite Dupree character. You're so calm and collected. It's a shame I'm not a fan of your husband, your son, OR your daughter. You deserve so much better than what's around you.
Ted Richardson - You know what you did, Ted. Or better yet, know WHO you did (Leslie). It's a shame that under your nice guy exterior you're sort of the worst. Paying off a woman to hide an affair? C'mon now...you don't deserve Nicole.
Kat Richardson - Kat? Honestly? On the first episode, I thought you were your cousin's, Chelsea's, girlfriend. I wish you were that, because as her cousin, it's great you're friends and you want to start your own business, but you're SUCH A SNOB. It's not that you're wrong about Eva - far from it, but you do it in the nastiest Mean Girl fashion possible. Ripping on her clothes and her looks? You awful and I look forward to bad things happening to you. You don't deserve Nicole.
Martin Richardson - Martin, you are my least favorite character. I mean, Bill is trash, but at least he's pretty honest about it? You cover it up with platitudes and bullshit. Your husband, Smitty, has done so much for you and you have the attitude of 'Oh, just stay home and take care of our kids! You don't need to go back to your old job!' Not to mention your anger management issues that are being covered up by your grandparents because you probably attempted to murder someone OR murdered someone and succeeded. You're the worst. You don't deserve Nicole.
Bradley 'Smitty' Richardson - Why did you marry Martin?!? I feel like he doesn't respect you and just used you to raise the kids or something. If you want to go back to being a reporter, do it. If you want to find a better husband, do that too.
Andre Hamilton - You are a huge whore and I like it. Your hook-ups with Dani are hot and I'm digging your potential new friendship with Eva. Do not go for Ashley - that girl is as dry as an unused tampon. You deserve better.
Ashley Morgan - My god are you boring. You literally bring nothing to the table. You're a nurse. That's it. You are about as fun to watch as seeing someone put up drywall. I don't dislike you, but I don't like you either. Hopefully you'll get interesting at some point, but I doubt it.
Derek Baldwin - Somehow you are even more boring than Ashley, your girlfriend. You're a firefighter and I know this isn't kind, but I kinda hope you die in a fire. Then I'll be spared from seeing your boring ass on my screen.
Eva Thomas - You poor misguided girl. Your crazy ass Mom has you wrapped up in a revenge plot that is going off the rails and Kat is a total bitch to you. I hope somehow, someway, you get out and get good things.
Leslie Thomas - You are insane and I'm over the moon for you. Mainly because you bring the opera to this soap! I'm not a fan of how you lie and are (no doubt) gaslighting your daughter Eva, but you are so out of mind bonkers it's hard not to love you. Every good soap needs an unhinged character and boy, are you delivering! Feel free to go even crazier.
Vanessa McBride and Doug McBride - You're a couple and you're both in the same boat of being here but not particularly enthralling. Vanessa, you're cheating on him. Doug, you have a gambling problem. Hopefully these threads will pay off but right now they're just sort of...there.
And that's it, folks! That's how I feel about the characters! Feel free to let me know what you think!

"Black and White Blues" (1971), un documental muy interesante que enlaza los orígenes del blues con el blues rock blanco de finales de los sesenta. La diferencia entre ambos parece casi abismal, pero en la película nos explican que hay aspectos que se mantienen, quedan, permanecen.
Tocan o hablan, o las dos cosas, Fleetwood Mac, Jeremy Spencer, Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown, The Who, Pete Townshend, Champion Jack Dupree, Muddy Waters, B. B. King, Marshall Hooks & Co, Alexis Korner, John Mayall, Paul Oliver, Mike Vernon... Sale hasta el "suedehead" (es broma) Duster Bennett.

Beyond the Gates Recap, May 9, 2025: June kept the Hawthornes on their toes
ByAdam-Michael James
Here's what went down Friday, May 9, 2025 on Beyond the Gates, when Kat saw two unwelcome sights at Uptown, all of Nicole's visitors were welcome except her last one, and Dani put both Bill and Ted in the blast zone.
What happened on Beyond the Gates?
Tumblr media
On Beyond the Gates, Naomi had trouble finding a room at a shelter for June, the homeless woman who had been arrested for assaulting a social worker. Jacob told June she didn't need to live in Tent City anymore, but June liked it. Naomi didn't care for Jacob's suggestion that she use her Dupree-Hamilton status to pull some strings; June didn't like lawyers or string pullers.
In the Dupree mansion, Vernon brought coffee, which he had made as an excuse to give Nicole alone time with Anita. Mrs. Dupree returned the favor and left Nicole with Vernon, who comforted his daughter and promised to check in on his grandchildren. Nicole reported that she felt numb, which Vernon said wasn't a bad thing – it was a form of self-protection. Soon, the patriarch predicted, Nicole would be able to do nothing but feel. “Yay! Something to look forward to,” Nicole chuckled mirthlessly. Vernon promised not to let Nicole fall when the emotions arrived for her to process.
Anita returned as Nicole chastised herself for being blind when it came to Ted, resulting in Anita proclaiming that no one was allowed to run down her daughter – even her daughter. Nicole confessed she had been feeling adrift, but the world felt right in her parents' house. Nicole thanked her mom and dad and headed home, wanting to learn to stand on her own two feet again. After Nicole exited, Anita recognized Vernon's long-standing stance against violence, but revealed that she wanted to... “give Ted Richardson one old-fashioned butt whupping,” Vernon finished, agreeing. Anita was aghast that Ted had cheated on Nicole on the heels of her suffering multiple miscarriages in her attempt to give him another baby.
Bill assured Dani that he thought he had handled the problem of Leslie's pregnancy for Ted all those years before. Dani was upset that Bill had never told her about Ted's affair, since it was her family that was affected by it. Bill recalled that, when he was married to Dani, he had done all he could to protect the Duprees, but Dani remembered that Bill had only ever helped himself. Bill rankled Dani by intimating that her indignation meant she still cared about him, which made her even more indignant. She wanted to know what other problems Bill had fixed for her family that carried similar capacities for destruction.
Dani and Bill argued about the things he had done for the Duprees – Dani cited Bill's lack of conscience, and Bill insisted he had gotten his hands dirty so the Duprees' could stay clean. If Dani had a problem with Bill playing fixer for the family, Bill told his ex, she needed to speak to “ringmasters” Anita and Vernon. Besides, Bill held, there was no changing the past. Dani demanded that Bill stay out of her family's business. “Wasn't it obvious I wanted out when I left you?” Bill retorted, which stung Dani; she was amazed she could ever have loved such a soulless man.
Hayley came downstairs, asking if the whole neighborhood could hear Dani and Bill's arguments when they were married. Bill guaranteed that, outside of Chelsea and Naomi, he wanted nothing more to do with Dani's family.
Post-workout, Martin met Smitty at Uptown and said the exercise had calmed him down – as had Naomi's request for a favor, which had been a distraction. Martin explained how he was able to find a room for Naomi's client, June, in a particular hotel that offered space to the homeless. When Smitty winced, he had to admit to Martin that June's hotel was the same one where Ted was staying – which Vernon hadn't wanted Martin to know. Martin got angry and felt like he was seen as some savage beast who couldn't control himself; after Smitty called Martin out on his escalating tone, Martin walked out. Kat came in and witnessed this exchange.
Kat approached Smitty, who explained Vernon's request and why Martin was aggrieved by it. When Smitty wondered if he should indeed stay out of Dupree family problems, Kat fell silent. She was only disappointed that her brother-in-law seemed to lack the ability to “swerve” when Martin “got all extra” and proclaimed Smitty a better husband than Martin deserved. Kat ordained Smitty a loved member of the Dupree family and smiled that they would keep Smitty in favor of Martin if the marrieds ever broke up.
When Tomás arrived for his lunch with Kat, she had to run out and take care of a supplier problem at ChelseaKat. Tomás promised to wait for her and sat down; a glum Eva entered, and Tomás joined her. Tomás said he hadn't pegged Eva as malicious; Eva replied she would rather Tomás ignore her like everybody else, since words such as those were more painful coming from him. Tomás acknowledged that he might have misjudged her and encouraged her to talk.
Eva told Tomás that she wasn't proud of what she had done; she had let things go too far and then tried to protect both her mother and her father. Eva found it strange to refer to Ted as that. She loved Leslie, Ted, and Nicole, yet she had failed them all. When Eva wanted to leave so that no one would see her break down in tears, Tomás grabbed her hand...which the returning Kat saw.
Andre went to see Ted at his hotel and brought his uncle a bottle. Ted noted that Andre was the only person in his life who could stomach him at the moment; Ted had gone to his office at the hospital and wound up enduring dirty looks from co-workers who were on Nicole's side. Ted half-heartedly asked Andre to talk to Nicole for him, but Andre didn't think his aunt would listen to anything he had to say on Ted's behalf. Yet, Andre had his own idea that he didn't elaborate on and left Ted to his own devices.
A sympathetic Andre went to see Nicole, but slipped that he wished had “told” her sooner. Nicole realized that Andre knew about Ted's affair; Andre was vehement that Ted hadn't known about Eva. Andre relayed how Ted had been afraid to tell Nicole the truth and asked forgiveness for not mentioning anything about Ted having cheated. Nicole didn't fault Andre – she faulted Ted for putting Andre in the middle between his aunt and uncle. Nicole listened as Andre stated that Ted loved her and that Ted would have handled things differently had he known he had a child. The psychiatrist continued to feel that Ted was a stranger.
Vanessa entered and embraced Nicole; Andre departed. Nicole had begun to wonder if Vanessa had had it right by shuffling off commitment, causing Vanessa to concede that she would have been “Mrs. Monogamy” if she could have found what Nicole had with Ted. Neither Nicole nor Vanessa had seen Ted's betrayal coming. Nicole appreciated Vanessa checking on her, but she wanted to be alone. After Vanessa saw herself out, Nicole expected a food delivery – but when the doorbell rang, Nicole's visitor was Leslie, who had used Eva's codes to get into Fairmont Crest. Leslie knew Nicole hated her, but there was something she wanted Ted's wife to know.
There was a knock on Ted's door, and he found himself face-to-face with Martin. The congressman found Andre's bottle and scoffed that Ted had yet another heretofore unseen vice. Martin sniffed that his father was more “second-rate” than he'd thought. Ted allowed Martin to vent; Martin had stood up for his dad in high school when other kids had complained about their own dads, saying Ted was the best. Yet, Ted, whom Martin had idolized, had lied to his wife and children for years; Martin didn't think anything he'd had growing up had been real. Ted swore that his love for Martin, his sister, and his mother had always been real, but Martin retreated when Ted drew nearer to him. Martin balled his fists at Ted's determination to make things right and seemed to make himself leave.
Naomi told June about the room Martin had secured, which was even better than a shelter. June turned it down, but Naomi said she couldn't focus on June's case if she had to worry about June's safety on the streets. When Jacob pointed out that the accommodation would keep June from getting arrested again, June agreed to stay there under protest.
Dani took a call from Naomi, who was displeased that her mother had gone to give her father hell. Naomi didn't think it served anybody, and counseled Dani to stay away from anything Bill related – Naomi would handle Bill. Derek and Ashley joined Naomi and Jacob and heard about Naomi's wildcard experience with June. Soon, Jacob got a call that June had split the hotel, but he had a feeling he knew where June had gotten off to and asked Derek for his assistance.
With their men gone, Ashley asked how Naomi was handling the revelation of Ted's affair with Leslie. Naomi grumbled that Dupree stood for “drama”; Ashley caught Naomi deflecting and encouraged her to open up about suddenly having a cousin. Naomi was afraid that, if a perfect couple like Nicole and Ted couldn't make it, who could? Ashley protested that Jacob and Naomi were “icons of love” that she and Derek couldn't yet hope to live up to.
Derek and Jacob returned with June, who had tried to fight them off. June figured that, with Naomi as her lawyer, she got to tell Naomi what to do, not the other way around. Jacob reminded June that her case was atypical and introduced her to Ashley. June asserted that she'd left the hotel because her home was under the overpass. That was where she wanted to stay, and no one could do anything about it.
Smitty was summoned by Bill, who had heard Smitty was back doing investigative reporting and offered his assistance. Bill felt that he and Smitty could be very useful to each other – Bill just needed Smitty to remind Martin that they were all on the same team. When Smitty asked for clarification, Bill would only reply, “Martin will understand.”

Dani proudly told her parents how she had “ripped [Bill] a new one” for his part in helping Ted deceive Nicole. Neither Anita nor Vernon was pleased, with the former senator thinking it hadn't been such a good idea. They worried when Dani swore she wasn't done making folks pay. Later, Dani arrived at Ted's hotel room – Nicole was too nice to tell Ted what scum he was, Dani decided, so Dani was there to do it for her.

Cry Baby AU
If you’re not aware of the movie Cry Baby it’s a romantic-comedy from 1990 starring Johnny Depp which centers on a group of delinquents who refer to themselves as "drapes" and their interaction with the rest of the town and its other subculture, the "squares", in 1950s Baltimore, Maryland. "Cry-Baby" Walker, a drape, and Allison, a square, create upheaval and turmoil in their little town of Baltimore by breaking the subculture taboos and falling in love. The film shows what the young couple has to overcome to be together and how their actions affect the rest of the town.
Anyway after watching it recently I got the idea to just write what it would be like with Hazbin Hotel.
Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker - Alastor
Allison Vernon-Williams - Charlie
Pepper Walker - Niffty
Mona “Hatchet-Face” Malnorowski - Vaggie
Milton Hackett/Dupree - Angel Dust
Wanda Woodward - Cherri Bomb
Ramona Rickettes - Rosie
Belvedere Rickettes - Husk
Baldwin - Seviathan
Lenora Frigid - Mimzy
If you haven’t seen this movie, please take my advice and watch it because it is so underrated and so awesome. Also it spawned a broadway musical.
Here's the trailer for the movie. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yB1bLlguZVY
And here's the musical. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=06up2_070y4&t=904s

Initial Character Analysis: Anita Dupree
I can see Anita Dupree fast becoming one of my favorite soap characters ever. The woman is simply fabulous honey!
Tumblr media
She is quick to praise her family with love and affection. It's heartwarming.
Tumblr media
Anita has a strong relationship with husband Vernon, said to have stemmed from the march on Washington!
She seems to have supportive relationships with both her daughters, Nicole and Dani. But she's not afraid to chew Dani out when needed. She let Dani have it for losing her temper with Hayley in public. Anita wants the public's perception of her family to be superior and above reproach. Vernon has expressed similar sentiments. In the end, Anita came by Dani's house to make sure she was alright. Showing that above all that, she is a mother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anita and husband Vernon have a strong relationship. They've been together for 62 years, and seem to have a clear plan of action for when a member of their family finds themselves in trouble. A plan of action that they have clearly had to use before, and found it to be successful. Referring to something specific here.
Vernon, Anita, Bill and Martin are in a group all their own here. Between them they are keeping a massive secret about some atrocity Martin committed. The word "overkill " was used to describe whatever it is Martin did. Martin has nightmares every night about what happened. Bill is aware of the situation, and seems to have helped Martin avoid consequences. Now, he's wielding that power against the family.
Anita doesn't strike me as someone who would sit back and let others take care of things. If Bill keeps it up, he better duck down. These claws definitely scratch! And I for one, can't wait!
Tumblr media
Anita is the embodiment of her promotional picture. She feels personally responsible for every member of her family. And is fully threatening to those who try to go against the family. She's got her head on straight, and knows what's important.

Champion Jack Dupree was one of the first American blues performers to leave the States and settle in Europe, where racial restrictions were less prominent. Arriving on the Continent in 1959, Dupree was well established and in a good position to take advantage of the British blues boom when it hit in the early to mid-'60s. Never one to let contractual obligations stand in the way of a recording session, Dupree tracked sides for a wide array of European labels, including several for Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon Records in 1968 and 1969, which resulted in two LPs, When You Feel the Feeling You Was Feeling and Scooby Dooby Doo, a scattering of singles, and a live set for a projected third album that was never released.

I'm sorry, but if Vernon's secret that Bill is blackmailing him over isn't that the Dupree legacy is an absolute sham, then what the hell are we even doing here?
